More Komeiji backstory? More Komeiji backstory.

Once again this is a retelling of Chireiden’s past, with time given to explore a little bit of every character. From Koishi closing her third eye and the events that follow, leading Orin and eventually Okuu to achieve their current forms, and how Satori and other underground folk deal with all of this.

So you might be thinking this is nothing new but the first book came out in 2010, two years after Subterranean Animism, and I do have to wonder if it helped popularize this kind of more dramatic take on the satori that you often see. Regardless, as I mentioned another time I do like these stories and this is a very good one.

Mixing in humor at almost every occasion, yet still striking a balance when it comes to the more serious moments, the way the story is delivered here is something special. And you know despite all the drama, it’s still a very heartwarming tale. It also ties in nicely to the events of the game.

I like how the characters are presented here, Satori trying to be the kind older sister, even if she comes off a bit overprotective; Orin generally being pretty cheerful and just wanting to do what she can for the sake of everyone. Koishi’s journey is of course also very important here, how she adapts to her new self, and how all the changes affect the people closest to her.

Utsuho’s part also contributes a lot to the story and I love how it’s handled here, simply because of how raw it is instead of having her get Yatagarasu’s power just like that or off-screen. Her arc is a focal point in all three chapters and it takes its time to build up her character, and show both her internal and external struggles. It does lean heavily on her airheadedness, but it works really well within the context here.

The art style is great, really charming and so full of life. But despite being very cutesy and all, it still does a good job at conveying the right mood during the more somber and dramatic moments of the story. Some of these are also very stylized, such as the sequence where Kanako talks to the pets, and it adds a lot to the scenes, they’re very memorable.

A classic, one of the essential Touhou fanworks I think. Though I’d have to make that list first.

Sal if you haven't read them yet I would highly recommend the touhou fan works by Karaage's Shop/Karaagetarou, they're some of the sweetest and cutest Touhou related content I've read and can be found translated on mangadex

I really love how this comic did Utsuho's origin story. Instead of Kanako showing up and blessing Utsuho with the Yatagarasu's power or just leaving a dead bird for her to eat, the Yatagarasu himself shows up and asks Utsuho to do a fusion dance with him. Seems like a pretty cool guy too. Actually asks her not to use the power of the sun for evil or anything like that.

But of course, Utsuho will not listen.
