I waited a bit with analyzing this particular chat, since I wasn't sure if it actually took place in the beginning, or if the events mentioned in it are those that occur later in the book; but I don't think that's the case. I was concerned it might be because of Izaya's reaction to the mention of guns, and not wanting to talk about it. However, I think if this was about Shizuo getting shot, I think Celty wouldn't talk about it in such a detached way, so at the moment I think this event simply inspires Izaya's later actions.
We start of with Mikado copy-pasting several lines of mechanical laughter, and Izaya low-key complaining about it, only to quickly delete the chat history when Celty joins.
What he's deleting is apparently him 'jokingly' talking about ways to legally murder Shizuo. Now, why? One possibility is simply to protect his identity, after everyone knows about their rivalry, and with Celty especially he can't risk that. However! He knows 'Saika' and Celty are friends, regardless of whether he's aware of Saika being Anri and apparently he can see who's online in a user list; so then why would he have been okay with Saika seeing it, when she can easily tell Celty about it?
I think the answer is pretty simple. This wasn't calculated at all, it was just Izaya venting his frustration to Mikado, and then getting embarrassed about it when Mikado points out how obsessed and stupid he's acting. Then he realizes the others will see and goes 'oh fuck, oh shit' and gets rid of the evidence.
"Shizuo's name seems to pop up in here a lot", in context, it's easy to assume that that's because Izaya talks about him (wether out of frustration or obsession is impossible to know though). Alternatively however, it could simply be a reference so Saika's spamming in the previous book.
And then we have this private conversation with Mikado. Online, Mikado hardly hides his intentions and the 'big boss' past of his personality. I'd say he's completely in control of this conversation, not Izaya! It also reveals that Izaya probably has a very dark sense of humor, the type you'll recognize if you hang out with depressed neurodivergents a lot. (Which is not to say he's depressed; he just shares the humor and the nihilist world view).
There's really no manipulation going on here, they talk as friends would, although Mikado does seem rather eager to use Izaya for his info. And Izaya just goes with it too, even trying to stir Mikado in the right direction for understanding what the Saika thing actually was, though Mikado doesn't really question it.
(it was the Saika children logging in individually under the same name while under influence of Haruna, not Anri. There was never any virus involved, that's just a bullshit explanation that Celty came up with.)
Izaya does take a dig at Mikado for being dirt poor though, which probably double serves as a slight warming that Mikado should keep up friendly relationships with him or he'll lose access to that privilege. ... Mikado proceeds to be a killjoy anyway.

Agency informant Izaya
I don't want to bring up the characters of Durarara because they don't really play apart in this.
Despite all the events taking place, this shit happens in the mysterious time and land of post canon.
It's very much a Izaya in the world of Bungou Stray Dogs AU.
However I felt like I should mention what happened when he left.
So the final fight with Shizuo and Izaya happened. And practically everyone thinks Izaya is dead.
There's a great deal of scepticism, and for good reason it is Izaya Orihara after all.
There are 5 people who all know for certainty that he's still alive, other than those that saved him.
Shinra, Shizuo, Mairu, Kururi and Simon.
Shinra and Shizuo just have a gut feeling. They know him well enough to be able to survive just about anything. That and a body was never found.
Shinra, to himself hopes that wherever Izaya is he's happy. He knows more than anyone how human his old friend is.
Mairu and Kururi know because Izaya has always taken care of the house bills, phone bills and anything else they needed money for.
And those payments never stopped. Could just be some auto thing, but now every month they get a certain amount of money.
Every birthday, every time there's a Yuuhei Hanejima meet and greet there's the exact amount + travel fair in their bank accounts.
It's always anonymous but they know who it's from.
Simon knows.... Because it's Simon and Simon knows everything.
Somehow when Izaya was recovering in hospital, one of the nurses handed him a box with his name on it.
And inside was some Fatty Tuna.
Thing is they all know Izaya is never coming back. Again, it's mostly a gut feeling at first.
But than all the information on Izaya Orihara vanishes over night. If you search his name you will find nothing.
Any information the Dollars or other gangs have on him, purged from their systems.
The Awakusu have only their payments and emails between Izaya on record as the only proof they did that they ever did business with him.
His phone number is no longer in use. Kanra leaves the chat room, and the account is deleted. As does every other account ran by Izaya.
It's like Izaya never existed.
He's burned his essence from the city, only remembered in the stories and memories of those around him.
It's poetic in a sense.
And Izaya will never return, because along with the PTSD from his final fight, there's nothing left for him in Ikebukuro.
He's with the Agency, he's happy and more alive than ever. Trying to change, to be better.
And to truly atone, he will leave Ikebukuro in the dust. Erase himself from it's streets and let it move on peace.
In a way Izaya did die in that final fight. But he's reborn, he's someone the old him wouldn't recognise and that makes him smile.
"Izaya? Are you coming in?" Asks Atsushi, walking over to him. Izaya looks back, smiling warmly and nods. "Yeah, yeah I'm coming." Atsushi hesitates but Izaya gestures for him to continue.
"Are you okay?"
Izaya nods "I am, just reminiscing I guess. But back to work, right?" Atsushi nods, smiling "yeah, we've got a new case and could really use your help."
Izaya grins, intrigued "lead the way" he follows Atsushi inside, and he doesn't look back.
And he never will.

watched the first two episodes of oshi no ko a while back (REALLY FUCKING GOOD, ive been a manga reader for a while but i stopped reading the recent chapters and basically forgot everything except for the major points and god itβs so satisfying to have the adaptation remind me of what iβve forgotten in the most beautiful way possible)
but this post isnt about onk, itβs about izaya!! izaya orihara!! lets fucking goooooooooo izaya idol au!!!! i cant get this flea out of my BRAIN
i was about to open a new canvas to draw some more shizaya stuff for my animatic that im never gonna finish and i was like huh. maybe i should draw onk fanart. and then i remembered this art of venti genshin impact with aiβs eyes and i remembered thinking man i hope this becomes an artist trend for people to do with their art blorbos! and then i was like OH. guess i could contribute to the trend by drawing izaya with aiβs eyes
and then i started thinking and i was like huh. Aiβs never experienced love from her parents, doesnβt think she knows how to love or how to express it, doesnβt get attached to others easily, is a perpetual liar, became an idol because she hoped she would learn how to love - oh hey doesnt. that. sound like izaya. just a little bit. not exactly, her character goes into more learning how to love/that she can love while izayaβs character is i can love but only impersonally because iβm afraid of getting hurt and his arc would be learning to let his walls down for his own good
SO for izaya idol au, izaya would become an idol because he wants to experience love, or something along the lines of βthereβs no greater demonstration of parasocial love and foolish decision making than in the idol industry! ahaha~β and probably βidols are perfect liars and i need to put myself into their shoes so i can become an even better liar and close myself off to any possibility of falling in love that could ever existβ
thereβs a lot of reasons he might want to become an idol, really. thereβs so much corruption and behind-the-scenes dealing and lies and facades and shit in the entertainment industry that i think izaya would eat for breakfast. he would LOVE witnessing that shit and making his own shady deals and stuff and occasionally ruining lives and watching people rise and fall down the rankings and tear each other down. plus the people who are in it for passion rather than money are fascinating as well. psychology studentβs dream really- i mean what this is definitely about izaya and not me projecting
plus he definitely has the looks for it (narita would hard agree given how many times heβs indirectly called izaya attractive through other characters. we love a canonically hot king)
now i need to make everything shizaya because iβm not okay but i have no idea who shizuo would be lmao
like you could make him some up and coming manager (no age difference stuff here sorry lmao) or a fellow idol (doubtful. shizuo can act cute but i dont think he could dance) or an actor like akane/kana or a streamer??? like memcho (my favorite character)
a mangaka/screenplay writer/writer in general could also work but i feel like youβd have less reason to interact with idols that way
idk how japanese idol groups work for men in particular or if thereβs even like a market for that :sob: id have to look into that if i actually started making stuff for this au
alternatively izaya crossdresses as a female idol and somehow no one realizes. except for shizuo. that would be hilarious actually. he refuses to do swimsuit modeling or other provocative stuff and his fans are like βoh?? the brazen kanra-chan is unexpectedly shy?? how cuteβ and he plays into it but inwardly heβs like. god i know exactly how im gonna go out with a bang when i retire. and shizuo watches him playing at being shy on tv knowing that that motherfucker is planning to strip on his last days as an idol
