Today is World Prematurity Day. Today is about increasing awareness of prematurity. Today we stand united around the world. This year's focus is on the introduction of skin to skin immediately after birth. The message to be conveyed is " A parents embrace is a powerful therapy"  In IPB we have been massive advocates of  skin to skin care since 2009. Research has documented its powerful effects on preterm babies and parents. The WHO is pushing the message today across the globe.  Preterm babies and parents both thrive with skin to skin care. #worldprematurityday #worldprematurityday2022 #Ireland #skintoskin #kangaroocare #preterm #neonatolgy #pretermbirth #prematurity #prematurityawareness #neonatal #nicu #nicunurses #nicuparents (at Ireland (country)) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClD40tgqmKH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Where has the time gone! My little human is two months old! . . . He now weighs 4 lbs and 14 oz! He takes 44 ml (~1.5 oz), has eaten between 20-40% of his feedings by mouth. Latches like a pro. And loves to poop in the middle of changing his diapers, not just one but twice usually! . . . Yesterday he got his two-month immunizations, and he handled it like a champ! I shed a fear tears because I hate seeing him cry. However, I am so proud of my little man. . . . #nicustrong #preemiestrong #preemie #nicubaby #nicu #update #wls #vsg #wlscommunity #wlsjourney #babyboy #baby #babyboy💙 #babiesofinstagram #kangaroocare #skintoskin #babyluca #neonatal #postpartum #35weeks #nicujourney #twomonthsold #breastfeeding #pumpingmom #pumpingmama #munchkin #milkmaker #showherlove #lucaa415 https://www.instagram.com/p/CBeG3ppBzxQ/?igshid=lkjj0zbipsk0

I was really surprised about how emotional I got talking to That’s Life magazine about Tommy’s birth story. After nearly four years, it hasn’t got any easier. The team at That’s Life were amazing and I’m so grateful I could share not only the sadness that comes with premature birth, but the overwhelming feelings of gratitude and pride of being able to support ourselves as a family, and then giving back to other families in our position. If you would like to support other Australian families affected by premature birth, join me and Tommy and Jason and the boys at the annual Walk for Prems event to raise for Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, our charity for my Picture Book published by Wombat Books called My Brother Tom. https://secure.lifeslittletreasuresfundraising.com.au/registrant/mobile/mobileTeamPage.aspx?teamID=110151&langPref=en-CA @lltfoz #lifeslittletreasures #thatslife @thatslifeau #prematurebaby #premmie #michelleworthington #michelleworthingtonbooks #michelleworthingtonauthor #love #instagood #inspiration #motivation #life #family #miracles #kangaroocare

Happy #oneweekold birthday baby! It's been such a BIG week! Matilda is definitely living up to her name's meaning: mighty in battle. Yesterday had some sudden, good but challenging and rather unexpected changes! Since she's been doing SO well on room air and can be swaddled they said she can be switched to a crib! That was all set up while we were doing #kangaroocare and then, before she got there, we learned she'd be changing rooms to a step down "pod!" We had heard that she would eventually move but it so suddenly occurred; glad both Dad and Mom just happened to be there! The pod is exciting because it means she doesn't need intense care but also exhausting because we just became comfortable in our routines and now its changing! We're switching from an individual room to a looooong room with 16 babies separated by curtains. I think it will be good for her to be surrounded by noise especially when we're not here: if she was still in utero it'd be pretty loud! But it requires us to figure out all the new things and readjust which is difficult when we haven't slept much 😴🤪. Goals for week 2: continued healing for baby, get all 3 of our babies some #familytime, and keep working on pumping strategies so as to be successful but also get some sleep! #gastrowarrior #Gastroschisis #changes #icandoallthingsthroughchrist #pumpingmom #tired #blessed #mightytilly (at Nationwide Children's Hospital Main Campus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHlVTsFL2X5/?igshid=1tm0a4cemuzgi

Kangaroo Care Linked to Better Infant Brain Development
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Tumblr media
Dr. Hardin Jillian Hardin, Ph.D. Developmental Psychophysiology Lab Florida Atlantic University MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: Most Kangaroo Care (KC) research examines the procedure’s positive physiological and psychological developmental effects on preterm infants as these infants are separated from their mothers before the end of gestation. However, the aim of our study was to determine whether kangaroo care parent-training and implementation with non-vulnerable, full-term infants provided developmental neurophysiological benefits.
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?  Response: Although the sample size was small, the results of the study suggested that both neuroendocrine and cortical benefits were uncovered. Extended kangaroo care use was associated with increased maternal and infant oxytocin, a hormone associated with relaxation and mammalian relationship formation/attachment as well as decreased infant cortisol, a stress hormone.Importantly infants exposed to KC also demonstrated EEG patterns associated with enhanced neurodevelopmental patterns, including increases in left frontal asymmetry and EEG coherence patterns that reflect more distant connections between brain regions. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: Our study suggests there may be neurodevelopmental benefits associated with extended kangaroo care use in healthy, full-term infants.  MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: One goal that we have for future research is to examine kangaroo care’s impact on relationship patterns of mothers and infants exposed to mood disorders. In particular, infants of depressed mothers have EEG patterns and emotionally interactive behaviors that have been shown to be dysregulated. Modifying the experiences by resetting the trajectory of these dyads may attenuate risk. Our goal is to suggest naturalistic and simple interventions that can positively impact these dyads. In addition, research on infant urinary and salivary oxytocin needs to be validated, to determine if the current results are replicable, as our sample size was small and salivary oxytocin pattern could be more expeditious to interpret and potentially intervene when necessary. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Response: While we recognize that social distancing now is the norm for these risky times (with COVID-19), mothers and babies who are not affected by the disease still need contact and touch to thrive and for relationship formation. Individual circumstances may lead to isolation or separation and we trust the medical community to make appropriate recommendations for each unique mother-infant dyad. What a wonderful journey this little boy is taking me on. . . . He’s moved into a big boy crib, has been doing really good breastfeeding, and has also started bottling! These little baby steps will help us get one step closer to home!
