Rain
The patter on the roof of their house had long been since lulled Kagome into a deep sleep, one that had left her snoring softly against his chest, her throat slightly crimped from the position she was in.
But she didn't mind.
And he didn't mind.
He couldn't sleep. There were nights wree the darkness of a mild rain storm brought back to him the memory of being alone and scared, desperately just trying to survive the night to see another day, with such vivid colors and feelings that he couldn't escape it.
All he could do was survive to see the next day.
It was warm in their home. It was humid and slightly uncomfortable, but it was at least warm.
He didn't feel the bitter sting of cold rain soaking him to the bone, reminding him he had no where and no one.
Kagome's snores would normally be a sound he eagerly teased her in the morning over, but he wouldn't dare when the sun finally broke through and chased away the clouds and raindrops because it was his distraction this night. It was his relief from the bringing memory of his life before this one.
Tightening his hold on her, Inuyasha breathed in her scent, trying to make it overpower the salt and mineral smell of the weather just outside his door.
While he was partially successful, the wind would carry the smells of his past up to his nostrils as if to mock his attempts to feel the here and now. It was frustrating and terrible.
Kagome snorted and adjusted her head in her sleep and was able to stop her snoring by relaxing her throat a little bit. Her face was tilted up towards his now, and he could see her features being illuminated by the filtered moonlight.
In the absence of her sounds to distract him, Inuyasha focused on her face and pushed his memories to the back of his mind as best as he could.
He remembered nights when they were hunting for the shards when the rain was so loud that he felt himself shut himself away from them, because how could his friends understand what he was going through? Kagome would always notice he was shutting down, getting lost in thoughts he couldn't express, and she would sit by him, saying nothing. Often she would just study or close her eyes but be close.
Perhaps that's when he learned to find solace in her presence.
Tonight, as she found insurmountable comfort in the soothing rattle of rain, he found an escape from the aching remorseful rain in her.

Little Dog
Another post for KagoMay with @grapefruitwannabe!! :) So happy to be able to collab!!!
The villagers had often wondered what exactly the girl from the future saw in the rough-edged boy from the past. They were more often than not seen fighting and causing problems for all sorts of people (not necessarily the girl, but they boy was known for his destructive tendencies when she was gone).
While it was interesting to see them interact, rumors had it that the two of the could be rather sweet to each other when they thought no one was watching - Kaede being the start and fodder of the rumor.
"He slept with his head on her lap all day yesterday. She was reading one of her 'books' and let him. It was the quietest my home's been since they came back. He isn't even injured!" Kaede stood in the middle of a group of the village women, gossiping about the two teens currently somewhere in the forest. "When he woke up, she asked him to take her on a walk!"
"Did he?!" Was the loud, yet hushed, response.
Kaede leaned in as much as she could with her bowed back, her single eye glinting with joy. "They left -- holding hands."
Squeals of thrilled excitement escaped the crowd, drawing the attention of men passing by: specifically Miroku.
"Such excitement! What brings such joy to such beautiful women?" He wiggled his way into the circle. "Some good news from Kaede?"
"Lady Kagome and Inuyasha went for a walk together." One woman eagerly filled Miroku in.
Another one jumped in, "They were holding hands!" At this exclamation, happy, high pitched noises started up again. Miroku smiled, and looked at Kaede.
He was the other major source of gossip. Since he spent more time with the two of them than Kaede, his stories were often more juicy and interesting to the women, so when he gave Kaede a pointed look, the women became silent, waiting with baited breath to hear what he had to share.
"I'm willing to bet it's because of how upset Inuyasha got at the last village we stopped at. Not that I'm much of a betting man." Miroku felt many of the women lean forward and latch on to every word he was saying.
"What happened at the last village?" A woman clad in an earthy green kimono gasped out. She was middle age, and one of the first people in the village to have interacted with Kagome when she arrived. Somehow she had become the biggest advocate for the young couple, encouraging her husband to speak to Inuyasha about marrying Kagome. Inuyasha simply knew her as the woman to avoid.
"Well, you see, Miss Kagome has the biggest heart, and as we were settling for the night, she heard something whine outside our rooms. It was a pitiful sound, heartbreaking at how sad it was. Miss Kagome hopped right out of her bed and rushed outside to see what was so hurt. Do you know what she saw?" Miroku had captured the attention of all the women in the group, and a few men who were walking by.
"What did she see, Lord Miroku? Was it a demon?" A man, who was still holding his hoe because he had stopped working his land to see what was going on, spoke out.
Sango had realized that Miroku was the center of attention and came over to investigate his motives. She hadn't heard the beginning of the story, but she had heard about a noise outside their rooms, and immediately knew where the story was going.
"No. Even better than a demon." Sango's voice carried over to the group as she approached them.
Kaede turned to regard the demon slayer with her one good eye. "Better? What do you mean, better than a demon?"
Sango smiled and leaned into the circle. "It was far better than a demon.” She paused dramatically, causing everyone listening to become anxious for the answer. “It was a little dog." She finally stated
Kaede let out a short raspy laugh, as she realized what Sango was inferring. The villagers, now a sizable crowd, looked at one another confused. What did that mean?
"How did Inuyasha react to the little dog?" Kaede questioned to move the story along.
"Well," Miroku continued, "he was far from pleased that Miss Kagome had left the safety of the inn in the middle of the night to find this dog."
Miroku flexed his arms and puffed out his chest, imitating the hanyou.
" ' Kagome, get back inside right now. You should be asleep.' Inuyasha yelled at her. He was clearly livid with her. You should have seen his face!" Miroku reenacted the sliver haired man before adding his own narrative.
Sango stepped in as Kagome. Tucking her hands under her chin, the same way Kagome had done nights before, she gazed up at Miroku, standing in place of Inuyasha. " 'But Inuyasha look at how cute he is!! He shouldn't be out here in the cold!' “ Sango let out a throaty laugh, and turned to the woman in green next to her. “Oh boy was Kagome laying it on heavy. And the best part was Inuyasha was having none of it."
"He told her 'No, Kagome. Last time you said something was cute, we wound up with Shippo. I am not having a second Shippo.' " Miroku resumed his Inuyasha position every time he spoke as the other man.
Having heard his name, Shippo hustled over and jumped onto Miroku's shoulder. Before he could ask, the woman in the green kimono spoke up. "I bet Lady Kagome wasn't okay with that."
Sango filled in, "Actually, she ignored him. She scooped up this dog and proceeded to give it kisses and say 'Aw who's a good boy? Who needs some love?' " Sango pretended to nuzzle something in her arms, and spoke in a high pitched voice, mimicking Kagome.
Continuing the role play of their romantically stunted friends, Miroku pointed an accusatory finger at Sango. " 'Kagome. Put that dog down now. It's filthy and should stay outside. No! Stop kissing it! Stop kissing it right now!' "
Sango, continuing to give affection to the pretend puppy in her arms walked through the crowd and purposefully strode right past Miroku. She stopped a little over a meter in front of him, and tossed him a pointed look over her shoulder, a full blown reenactment of the scene happening. " 'Unlike someone else I know, this puppy is willing to let me love him. ' " Sango snarkily snapped at her roleplay partner behind her.
Miroku, true to his character, sputter and contorted his face, before turning and letting out a loud huff of indignation. Shippo, for his part, said to Miroku, " 'Inuyasha, this is what happens when you aren't nice to Kagome. She finds you a replacement ' "
Miroku lifted Shippo up and put him on the ground, far more gentle than Inuyasha had been nights previous. " 'Put it back! I mean it!' " he called out to Sango, who had lifted her imaginary puppy to her face and was making cooing noises at it.
Sango tossed Miroku a sideways glare, before announcing as 'Kagome', " 'We are going to bed now Inuyasha. See you in the morning.' "
The crowd of villagers had a mixed response - most of the men burst out laughing, along with a few of the older women, but a few women gasped loudly at how brash 'Kagome's' statement was. Kaede for her part, shook her head and said "Kagome really does keep that boy in line."
As the whole scene was unfolding in the village, Kagome and Inuyasha had made their way through the forest to their favorite clearing. They had laid down, with Kagome resting her head on Inuyasha's chest. They were resting peacefully, happy to spend time together, no words needed.
Then Inuyasha sneezed hard enough that his upper body lifted up off the ground, waking Kagome up from her light slumber. Without removing her head from his chest, she shifted her head to regard his face. Reaching up, she tapped his nose.
"Your nose is still wet, so mustn't be too sick." She wrapped her arm around him and scooted closer. "But just in case, let me keep you warm."
Normally her antics would send him into an embarrassed mess, but he didn't have a chance to react because he was seized by another violent sneeze.
Kagome waited for his body to settle down, holding on the entire time he shook, until saying, jokingly, "Or maybe Sango and Miroku are putting on a show for the villagers based off of us."
That got Inuyasha's attention. "What do you mean 'a show'?" He began to sit up, forcing Kagome to roll off him and lay by herself. Crossing his legs, he sharply turned to regard Kagome next to him.
"Miroku and Sango tend to reenact our fights for the villagers. Apparently it's the best entertainment around or something." Kagome curled up onto her side, closing her eyes as if to resume sleeping.
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at her. "How long have you known about this?"
Kagome remained silent, choosing to chase sleep over answer his question. However Inuyasha was having none of that, and grabbed her shoulders. "Kagome, how much has Miroku and Sango tell the villagers?! How much do they know about us?!"
Kagome opened her eyes and locked eye contact with Inuyasha. "Honestly, I think they know more about us than you do some days. Why are you so concerned?"
Inuyasha abruptly stood up and held a hand out to Kagome who had yet to remove herself from her side. "C'mon. We have to stop them!"
Kagome looked from his hand to his face and back a couple of times. "You realize that barging in and causing a scene will only give them more to talk about right?"
"Let's go!" Inuyasha insisted, waving his hand at her. Letting out a sigh of resignation, Kagome took his hand and let him lead her to the center of the village where Sango and Miroku were finishing up their impromptu theatre performance.
" 'Don't you even think that thing is going to come with us! It's staying here and that's final!' " Miroku half way shouted at Sango, barely audible over the boisterous laughter of the villagers. Inuyasha took in all the people watching the scene. He wondered if there was anyone even missing, because it looked like the entire village was there. He was so shocked at the sight and didn't even had a chance to react to Miroku's impression of him before Sango spoke.
" 'What is your problem? It's just a little dog! He won't cause any problems!' " Sango batted her eyelashes at Miroku in an eerily familiar way.
Miroku turned and regarded his audience, "This of course was when Sango and I stepped in to help resolve the situation. I told Inuyasha 'You must be more understanding, my friend. Do you not see that this little dog looks so much like you? Kagome is only as fond of it as she is because it reminds her of you.' "
Inuyasha's face turned bright red, and he cried out, "It looked nothing like me! Nothing! Kagome, tell them it didn’t look like me!” The crowd turned to regard the two newest arrivals with curious gazes.
Kagome flatlined, “It was cuter.”
While Inuyasha sputtered and howled his dismay, the villagers couldn’t contain how humorous they found Kagome’s comment.
Kaede hid a smile as she turned and walked away, having had her fill of excitement for that day. As much as Inuyasha would try to deny it, he had found himself a home in her village, thanks to Kagome.
