magnus is lying on his back on their bed, with alec lying between his legs, his head pillowed on magnus's stomach. magnus cards his fingers lightly through alec's hair, scratching the scalp a little and enjoying how alec's eyes scrunch shut in pleasure at that. alec mouths across magnus's hip bone and then presses a kiss right above his navel and pushes himself up a little, resting his chin on his arms and looking up at his husband.

"you're thinking about something," alec observes, noting the soft hesitation in magnus's eyes, the way he's biting on his bottom lip.

"yes," magnus agrees, sighing very quietly.

"wanna talk about it?" alec asks, tilting his head slightly.

"i went to st. ambrose yesterday to have lunch with catarina," magnus says, one leg shifting so that it falls over the back of alec's thigh, effectively locking him in place. "she told me about a young warlock baby who'd been referred to her for medical care after her mundane parents threw her out."

alec listens attentively, not interuppting. magnus's eyes are unglamoured now but his voice breaks with centuries of empathy for children like him. "she's just a baby, alec. i was at least nine."

"the world is cruel, magnus," alec says softly, rubbing soothing circles into the skin over magnus's heart, wishing it could act as a salve.

"catarina is looking into adoption," magnus continues after a beat. he sounds nervous now, "you said to me once, that i wouldn't be alone if i wanted to start a family." the unspoken question hangs in the air between them.

"i meant every word of that. i still do," alec replies, words careful and slow to assure magnus of their sincerity.

"i cant have children, but i know the lightwood family name means a lot to you. are you sure you wouldn't rather have a biological child?" magnus asks, his fingers stilling in alec's hair as he waits.

"magnus, i'm a lightwood-bane now," alec corrects him, "and biology means nothing to me if there's somebody in the world already who we can love and provide for. family is more than just biology. you of all people should know that."

magnus's face breaks out into a smile thst still manages to knock all the breath out of alec. "i love you, darling."

"i love you," alec replies, crawling up a bit so he can kiss magnus. "and i want to be raise a child with you. you have so much love to give, you'd make such a good dad."

"you would too," magnus smiles. "you're so good with madzie."

alec responds with another kiss, slow, sweet and lingering. it's almost time for them to get up and go about their day but alec settles in next to magnus and pulls him to his chest, wrapping his arms around magnus's body tightly. the clave and magnus's clients can wait a little bit.
