self-quarantine activities
1. Complete a puzzle: The more pieces the better! Feeling extra saucy? Take on a Rubik's Cube. More of a word person? Crossword puzzle!
2. Start a journal or blog. Sure, it can be about the coronavirus, but it could also be about a specific interest from chess to cheese.
3. If it won't bother your neighbors: Dust off that old instrument and practice.
4. Text all your exes just in case you have one more thing you wanted to get off your chest.
5. Write poetry. Perhaps you can craft a haiku for Mother's Day, or something without a specific structure. Just try it!
6. Watch all the really long movies you’ve avoided until now.
7. Download Duolingo, or a similar app, and teach yourself a foreign language.
8. Finally read “Infinite Jest,” “Les Miserables” or even “The Stand.” Go all in and read “Ulysses.” You got this.
9. Meditate. Try lying down with your eyes closed, palms up and while focusing on your breath. Or spend 20 minutes sitting crosslegged and repeat a soothing word to yourself in your head. (The latter is more like transcendental meditation.)
10. Face masks, moisturizer, oh my! Treat yourself to a 10-step skin care routine you don’t have time for during a normal work week.
11. Look at pictures of puppies.
12. Put together the most attractive charcuterie board possible, but you can only use foods you already have in your fridge and cupboard.
13. Take note from "Tangled" star Rapunzel, who has an entire song about how she's spent her days alone in a castle. Activities included in her ditty: Ventriloquy, candle-making, papier-mâché and adding a new painting to her gallery.
14. Write actual letters to family and friends. After that? Write thank-you notes to service people who you remember went out of their way for you.
15. Learn calligraphy. YouTube can help.
16. Finally read the rules to those long and intense board games you've never played with the family. Encourage the family to play.
17. Put on a soap opera. Mute the sound. Create your own dialogue.
18. Have a space in your home where all of the tupperware goes? Organize it and actually match lids to containers.
19. Try on all your clothes and determine whether they “spark joy” á la Marie Kondo.
20. Better yet, go through this process with your junk drawer and supply shelves.
21. Have a roommate meeting about how to be more considerate of one other, especially while you will likely be spending more time together. Bring baked goods.
22. Bake those goods.
23. Watch the films that won Oscars for best picture.
24. Watch films that won Independent Spirit Awards for best picture.
25. Watch films that critics say should have won those aforementioned awards.
26. Read all the New Yorker issues piled on your desk.
27. Will Tom Hanks into recovery from coronavirus by watching every Tom Hanks movie chronologically.
28. Knit or crochet.
29. Use Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Marco Polo to video chat with your long-distance friends.
30. Try out at-home aerobics or yoga videos. Consider downloading a fitness app with curated workout playlists.
31. Look at yourself in the mirror. Attempt a self portrait with pencil and paper.
32. Take a bubble bath (bonus: Add a glass of wine).
33. Make a classic cocktail, from negronis to Manhattans and aperol spritzes. Don't forget the garnish.
34. Coloring books: They’re not just for kids.
35. Take time to reflect: What have you accomplished in the last year? What goals are you setting for yourself in the next year?
36. Write a short story or get started on that novel.
37. Actually try to reproduce something you see on Pinterest. Probably fail. Try again.
38. Clear out the family room and camp indoors with all blankets, popcorn and scary movies.
39. Finally get around to fixing that broken door knob and loose tile or cleaning scuffed up walls.
40. Acquire a foam roller and treat yourself to some physical therapy.
41. Pretend you're 13 years old and fold a square piece of paper into a fortune teller you put your thumbs and pointer fingers into. Proceed to tell fortunes.
42. Learn how to braid (fishtail, French, etc.) via YouTube tutorial..
43. Throw out all your too-old makeup and products. (Tip: most liquid products have a small symbol on them noting expirations, usually six months to a year. This includes sunscreen!)
44. Interview your grandparents (over the phone, of course) and save the audio. Can you create an audio story or book with that file?
45. Go through your camera roll, pick your favorite pics from the past year and make a photo book or order framed versions online.
46. Go on a health kick and learn how to cook new recipes with ingredients you may not be using already, from miso to tahini.
47. Create a Google document of shows or movies you’re watching and share it among family and friends.
48. Make a list of things for which you are grateful.
49. Have your own wine tasting of whatever bottles you have at home. Make up stories about the journey of the grapes to your mouth.
50. Work on your financial planning, such as exploring whether to refinance your loan or ways to save more money.
51. Perfect grandma’s bolognese recipe.
52. Make coffee, but this time study how many beans you use, which types, how hot the water is, how long it brews and whether any of that makes a difference.
53. Buy gift cards from your favorite local businesses to help keep them in business while we quarantine.
54. Watch “Frozen 2,’ which went up early on Disney Plus. Another new movie on the streaming service: "Stargirl."
55. Write a book with your family. Pick a character and each member writes a chapter about their adventures. Read aloud to each other.
56. No March Madness? Have a Scrabble tournament. Or Bananagrams. Pictionary, anyone?
57. Get into baking with "The Great British Baking Show," but your technical challenge is baking something with the ingredients you have on hand (that you didn't already use in the charcuterie board).
58. Indoor scavenger hunt.
59. Alternate reading the Harry Potter series with your kids and cap each one off with the movie.
60. Dye your hair a new color. No one else needs to see it if you don't like it.
61. Read Robert Jordan’s 14-book “Wheel of Time” series before it streams on Amazon starring Rosamund Pike.
62. Write a play starring your loved ones. Perform it via a video call app.
63. Go viral in the good way by making a quarantine-themed TikTok.
64. Rearrange your sock drawer. Really.
65. Stop procrastinating and do your income taxes.
66. Make lists of all the museums, sporting events and concerts you want to visit when they finally reopen.
67. Get into comics with digital subscriptions on your tablet, like Marvel Unlimited.
68. Rearrange your furniture to make it seem like your home is a totally different space.

75. Apply for a new job. You have remote work experience now.
76. Learn a new style of dance via YouTube, from bellydancing to breaking.
77. Update or write your will and organize your affairs. Yes, it sounds melodramatic and morbid but let’s face it: This is a task many of us avoid because we never have the time. Now we do.
78.The parades have been canceled but you can still make corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick’s Day.
79. Bring out the Legos. Build your house inside of your house.
80. Watch the "Star Wars" movies in this and only this order: Rogue One-IV-V-II-III-Solo-VI-VII-VIII-IX.
81. Two words: Coronavirus beard! Grow it, moisturize it, comb it, love it.
82.  Learn the words to "Tung Twista." Get them so ingrained in your brain that you can rap them as fast as Twista can. Impress everyone.
83. Been meaning to get some new glasses? Try on new frames virtually on sites like GlassesUSA.com.
84. Attempt things with your non-dominant hand, from writing to brushing your teeth. Prepare to be frustrated.
85. How many words per minute can you type? See if you can get speedier by taking a typing course.

87. Learn origami. Make cranes for your loved ones.
88. Stretch. Work on your flexibility. It's possible to get the splits back, right?
89. Try to speak in pig Latin. Or, "ig-pay, atin-Lay."
90. Talk to your plants. How are they doing? Make sure they are getting the amount of sunlight they should be. Check their soil. Water if necessary.
91. Deep condition your hair and put paraffin wax on your hands. Enjoy your soft hair and nails.
92. Consider donating money to food banks to help families struggling to get meals.

Jewelry Making: Because this stuff may not be as intuitive as I thought.
So first and foremost this post is in response to/inspired by @lunar-rose-witch who originally tagged a request for help as "#jewelry making" and fully caught my attention, inspiring me to not only give her some quick pointers but start writing a full-on-post in my craft blog for the first time in years. (Also I looked back and half my response dissipated into the ether, sorry!
Also I’m going to buck craft blog trend a bit: The personal backstory will bring up the rear of this piece, so you can get to the juicy info right away. Hit the read more for the full speech.
MASSIVE EDIT: Not all the techniques in this post work for all styles of jewelry. This is for the typical, “like what you can buy in the store” type techniques, but there are specific techniques and styles that don’t quite match the most specific, technique- and supply-based info here just due to the nature of their creation. (for good examples, look at macrame hemp jewelry or kandi, a style making primary use of elastic, monofilament, and plastic beads) A lot of the more basic info works, though, I just wanted to cover that.
So here’s how I’m going to structure it: Quick explanation, and then a “high-end” and “budget” approach if it applies, and then my recommendation which usually swings somewhere between the two. Rinse and repeat until we get to the bottom of my list of subjects. No time for questions, the area I’m writing in has spotty wifi!
Tips
(note: no high-end or budget options, this applies to everyone)
Full disclosure, this is upfront because if you’re confident in your jewelry-making you don’t need the other stuff.
The most important tip is to always have fun. You want to make something bright and colorful? Go ahead. You want to please a divine figure in your life with what you wear? That’s fine! You want to make an avant garde wearable piece? I fully support you! You want to make a way to carry something with you? I have a giant box-shaped “locket” I can’t be against that! You want to make it look like a cooking pan melted weird and wear it on your head? Please post pics! You want to incorporate the usb drive you use for school into your earrings? Let’s see someone knick it off you now! You want to make a hangman’s noose into a necklace? Stitch like 20 stitches of upholstery thread through that knot so you don’t actually strangle yourself. Once you’ve done that you do you boo. I digress, don’t hurt yourself, but do have fun with it. Most of the following information is for standard cold-connection (read: no sautering) jewelry making, which is a good foundation for your line of 30 ways to creatively use rope as a necklace.
My next tip connects nicely to the first: check your fit and watch your weight. Not your bodyweight, the weight of your piece. A few ounces on the body can be comforting, but a half pound on your wrist or neck is asking for pain later. Likewise with the fit, a snug princess fit may be nice, but a tight collar not so much. As you’re working, regularly check the fit, especially if 1) it’s a new design, and 2) you’re planning on wearing it. Especially especially if you’re wearing it to an event where you can’t easily ditch it. Put on your piece, move around a little to make sure it doesn’t fall off. That kind of thing. Never just do it and call it done.
For laying it out on your workspace, you may want to invest in a beading mat. This keeps things, especially small beads, from rolling around on you. A beading board or a necklace board is useful if you plan on making a lot of pieces with distinct focal points. For both home and travel, they sell little spiral clips called bead bugs or bead buddies that grip tightly to where you’re stringing and worth their weight in gold. (binder clips work ok for this, but tend to slip off more easily) If you do a lot of making on the go, a clamshell project carrier is kind of pricey but may be worth your while.
Things to learn asap: how to make a crimp, how to make an eye, fisherman’s knot. There are other things but these bits of knowledge are absolute workhorses.
For those of you with metal allergies, work around it where you can, get something that won’t hurt your skin where you can’t. I often use cord or beads because a lot of market chains irritate my skin, and I always get hypoallergenic earring findings. It’s just not worth the hassle not to.
Get a reference for default sizes. Just, even as a hobbyist. Trust me on this. It’s a good thing to know. Default sizes for necklaces, bracelets, rings, beads. Don’t even need to spend a lot of money, just print them from online. You’ll thank me later.
Info and Techniques
There are varying ways to learn more about jewelry making.
High-end: Buy every book on jewelry making you can. Take all the classes you can. Just absorb all the info you can!
Budget: Get a notebook and a pen and start taking some serious notes. You don’t need to draw well for this, but you see a technique you like? Jot it down. See a piece you think is cool? Make a quick sketch, try and figure out how to reverse engineer it. At the craft store and the employee tells you something you didn’t know? Into the book. Scour libraries, check the internet, fill that sucker with every little jewelry making thing that catches your interest.
My Recommendation: The budget solution, for sure, but I am also an avid Pinterest user. (I know Pinterest is free, but not everyone has regular access to a computer or the internet) I see a technique, I save it. The one risk is that you may spend more time pinning that you do making; thanks to the new feature of categories for each board, I’ve very recently started a private “projects” board, where I put all the stuff for a project I want to do. That way I don’t get distracted.
Sourcing Supplies
How and where you get your supplies is important for figuring out your project.
High-end: You can go to any jewelry making store and get the high-quality beads and findings, the strongest tools, and the stuff for the nicest setup. All your stuff, design aside, will be sturdy and high-quality. Go to the craft store for anything else.
Budget: Be an avid thrift-shopper. Buy old, cheap necklaces and harvest the beads. If the wire in the necklaces is still in decent condition, save that too. Same goes for particularly nice clasps. Use upholstery thread or, in a pinch, unscented dental floss. Some people use snaps for clasps, as they’re easier to maneuver. Wait for sales in your local craft store, and scrounge their clearance bins for some real gems. Make beads and focal-pieces from stuff around the house. Get creative!
My Recommendation: I swing wildly between the two. I have a metal allergy, meaning if I want to be able to wear my stuff I have to shell out for the hypo-allergenic stuff or find an alternative that won’t irritate my skin. But some of my best beads have come from $1 thrift store necklaces, and the better I get the more I can make on my own. I’ve made my own clasps before from shrink plastic, which- fun fact- can be scrounged from some plastic food containers, you don’t need to buy shrinky dinks! So, put down money on the part that’s important in your project, but you don’t need to spend a lot to make good jewelry when a bit of time investment will do the job.
Your Tools
Your toolset and supply choices will vary, from what you have to how you store it.
High-end: Get all the things! All the different types of pliers, beading needles, toolboxes, bead boards. If they sell it you can use it for something. The cool devices that make certain tasks easier to do, too.
Budget: One multi-tool. You can do everything from there.
My recommendation: Like with your supplies, put money where it matters. The biggest factor is how quickly a tool will wear down. Namely, don’t get too attached to your wire cutter because it’s going to go the way of all things way before anything else in your tool kit does. Here’s my basic list:
round nosed pliers
flat nosed pliers
wire cutters
bead bugs/bead buddies
a good pair of sharp scissors
large-eye beading needles (aint nobody got time for that tiny hole nonsense)
crimping tool
That last one is interesting and I want to point it out: a crimping tool is a little pair of pliers that help you fold crimps. (see Bracelets and Necklaces) It is the one tool that can’t really be used for anything else, except maybe helping with crimp covers. (there is also a pair of crimp cover pliers and... no. just no. save your money) This is the most specific tool I ever recommend because it is has one job and it is very good at it. If you’re planning on using a lot of beading wire, get a crimp tool. It’ll save you a headache later.
(finally, we get project specific)
Bracelets and Necklaces
For these kinds of projects, I always recommend beading wire. It’s sturdy and easy to use if you know how, and often lasts longer than string which can be affected by moisture, heat, and general wear and tear. The more strands it has, the more flexible it is. (i.e. 7 strands vs. 49 strands) Do not knot this material, always use a crimp bead or a crimp tube. Knots will come loose. I’m always surprised how many people don’t make this connection, as it is by name a wire, but now you know. You can use a pair of flat pliers to “seal” them, but I often recommend a crimping tool. (As I wrote above, a crimping tool is the most specific tool I will suggest you buy. It can do one thing but it’s damn good at that one thing.)
For those that want a more natural, or flexible, piece, thin cord or beading thread is where you’re going. Wildfire is pricey but lasts a long time and is a good beading thread. For beads with bigger holes, go for cotton, leather, or hemp beading cord.
An important note on this! Thin cord or silk cord is often used for stringing pearls. Should you find pearls interesting, a good technique to learn would be to knot inbetween each bead; this keeps the beads from grinding up against each other and getting damaged, and is also a good way to avoid losing your entire strand if the cord snaps at some point. My technique is this: string pearl. Start to tie a knot. Put a sewing pin or a needle into the knot and gently pull until the knot, needle and all, is pushing against your bead. Then tighten. Repeat.
Elastic and stretchy cord is ok? Better for lighter pieces. Personally I don’t like it because over time it will soak up the sweat and oils of your skin, which will promptly degrade it to the point it snaps. Better for young kids or people with less dexterity, since it’s easy to put on and take off. I used to use one, but then I’d be working and my necklace would get caught on something somehow for a second and then hit me in the neck or wrist. No thank you.
Monofilament is like fishing line and kind of tricky. It’s strong and can be used in the place of beading wire, but only up to a point. It has a bit of give which gives it weakness, but not enough to be stretchy. Still, it has good strength, is almost invisible, and if you’re thrifty can be bought as sturdy fishing line and save you some coin. If you ever see a piece with “floating” beads, they used a monofilament thread.
Chains are almost a topic all to themselves, since there’s such a wide variety. Your tools will open links on chains with defined links, but look carefully at chains like ball chains and snake chains, which need to be treated specially as they have no distinct links. Also, if you have a metal allergy, this is where money will go, that or only ever wear your piece with collared shirts or over sleeve cuffs.
Your clasps will vary, but I recommend against anything that will fall loose and cause your piece to fall off. I love toggles but if the piece is too light you’re asking to lose it. Lobster clasps are a solid go-to option, albeit a bit tricky on bracelets, where you may find a hook more your style. Those ridiculous barrel clasps are best on necklaces, where you can use both hands to full affect. The magnets are strong and very good, but I don’t use them much because I’m always worried I’ll Stick To Something Right When I Don’t Need To. Good if you or the recipient has dexterity issues since it’ll just snap together.
Be careful with your beads, especially on bracelets. Since they’re laying on a curved surface, how the beads will go together will vary. This is where “try on your piece” comes into play. And a word of advice, try not to go too wild in variation or with something too sharp, especially for your wrist. That hurts. Also, avoid going too heavy.
Rings and Earrings
This is where hypoallergenic stuff comes into play the most. (side note, if you don’t have any metal allergy, you can skip this paragraph you fortunate soul) You can weave or tie a ring, but you can’t do that with an earring finding. The big bucks will be put down on those, since depending on your sensitivity you may have to put down bigger bucks for 14k gold and sterling silver findings. The internet is a good resource for this, but always check reviews. Be careful in craft stores, since sometimes the packaging will be confusingly worded. You can temporarily get around this by putting the hook or post in antibiotic ointment right before putting it in your ear, but this is iffy for long-term use.
Make sure your posts have backings that stay on, usually those little curly things or the bullets. For fishhooks there’s a product called a hook keeper or something similar. You may have seen it on the back of earrings you just bought; they’re a little piece of rubber that keeps the hook from working its way out of your ear, good for active people. You can buy these suckers in bulk.
Before I move on to rings, earrings, are where the weight thing is the biggest issue; when I just got my ears pierced, I made a ton of earrings out of clay in preparation for being able to switch them out. One of them was a pair of massive and thick earrings based off a tv show, I think. This lead to Immediate Regret, as the earrings stretched my earlobes to the point of me supporting them with my hands while walking through Walmart to avoid the pain, before realizing how stupid that was and taking them out. Watch the weight, the lighter the better as most ear piercings go through the fleshiest, least structured part of your body. Just, in general, avoid too much weight on anything that uses a piercing. Unless that’s the point. (I see you guys with gauges)
As for rings! I honestly don’t make a lot since I don’t wear a lot, but here’s what I know: your base should either have some give (read: stretchy) or be adjustable. if it’s a fixed size, test the fit constantly while making it. You don’t want to spend that time and energy on something that either rattles around on your thumb or can barely fit your pinky. Always watch the fit on any of these; your fingers will turn white first if something is too tight, then slowly turn red. That is a bad fit, don’t wear it like that. Switch it to a different finger if you have to. You’ll see visible space if it’s too loose. Don’t wear it like that either, you’ll lose it or worse, get caught on something. I actually have an aunt that lost a whole finger that way. Don’t do that. (Maybe that’s the reason I don’t like rings?)
If your ring has to have a large profile (read: a lot of stuff on top) make sure it’s secure. Try to avoid little fiddly bits where you can, go for something like a mountain: large base. When possible, go for something like a coin; low profile, goes along the fingers, but with lots of room to create. Try not to have too many things going off it, either; anything that dangles off the ring really shouldn’t go farther than the side of your hand. This is as much safety as anything; you don’t want your ring to get caught on something and get ripped off your hand, or worse. Also, try to avoid anything too... bumpy? Like with too much variation on the side, the kind that will dig into the sides of your fingers. Not a fun time.
My Backstory
(aka the personal story I moved to the end so you could get to the juicy info)
I got into jewelry making literally by being asked to be the jewelry instructor. You’d think it was the other way around; nope! We needed a jewelry instructor and I was already making baby steps by gluing buttons to earring posts, so I agreed to learn to basics and help education out in the craft store where I worked. That lead to a fascination; there’s seriously so much stuff you can do if you just know where to look! I’ve been making my own jewelry ever since.
As such, I’ve put a lot of time into learning new techniques, which is where I am now. As anyone who’s decently good at something will tell you, the more you know the more you realize you don’t know. I am by no means an expert. The idea is to pass this info on to anyone who somehow knows less than me.
Thanks for reading! If there’s anything I missed or you want to know more about feel free to hit me up with an ask.

( genderfluid ) haven’t seen MARS NOVA around in a while. the AMANDA ARCURI lookalike has been known to be UPBEAT & ADAPTIVE, but THEY/SHE/HE can also be MISCHEVIOUS & DISHONEST. The 20-year-old is a SOPHOMORE majoring in ASTROPHYSICS. I believe they’re living in AUDAX but I popped by earlier and no one answered the door. ( ral. 21. gmt+1. she/her. )
Tumblr media
hi hello it is i, ral, let me entertaaaaain uuuu introduce myself and my idiot child, mars: im from belgium, the land of chocolate and fries, an 21, the age of anxiety and tears, and am v excited to join y’all!!! under the cut you can find (a lot of) info about human garbage can mars also here you can find their pinterest board and here some wcs!!
anyways hit me up if you like what you read and you wanna plot!! i’ll complete the first task and post a starter soon (also the second task bc mars’ secret is pretty integral to their whole character lol)
mars’ real name is not mars, it’s a nickname and a fake name too, they change it every few years; they picked a space related one because space is awesome
so mars is genderfluid, but they don’t make a big deal about it; if you ask them, they’ll say you can use whichever pronoun you want, she, he or they. most people just use she, which is 100% okay. they won’t announce it or anything, if it comes up in conversation, they mention it.
also they’re pan but they usually just make a pun about it and that’s it
(tbh i’ll probably change their pronouns as im writing mars is a v inconsistent human when it comes to lol everything but also pronouns. just. chaos!!)
they got adopted when they were around 4 years old after their family was accidentally involved in a shooting. john was around because he was involved as well, felt guilty, and took the kiddo in since they had no other family.
mars is v used to change, they travel around a lot since john does a lot of small jobs here and there, some of them legal, most of them kind of dodgy. ofc no one knows this. (more about this in task nr. 2!)
has lived in a lot of weird places: a boat, a mobilome, a trailer, on random people’s couches, etc. has developed the ability to fall asleep everywhere, in every position
john started saving up for college for mars because they wanted to give them a chance at education and a stabler life and mars said yes when john asked bc a break would be nice. they transferred to lockwood after their first year after starting a year late.
mars is a very upbeat and happy person, they bounce around and babble enthusiastically whenever they meet someone new. they're very sociable and friendly, honestly, they like most people they meet. to be honest, the grumpier the human, the more morph likes them. since their dad is quite silent and broody, they’ve grown to really like that kind of person. but they aren’t picky honestly. if you can put up with their shenanigans, everything is a-okay
at the same time they’re very closed, which means they answer every slightly personal question with a wild, uncoherent story. even their birthday no one knows. like they’re not your typical secretive broody human, you just realise that at the end of the day, even though mars talks a lot, you barely know anything about their personal life
they didn’t know tatiana very well but were still shocked when they found her dead. they didn’t pick her name though so they feel like it’s not their fault
mars loves loves loves pranks. combined with the fact that they have no sense of people’s boundaries and a lot of slightly shady life skills means they’ve pulled up some crazy shit. sometimes they go a bit too far which makes people upset but they pester them with love until they give up.
space is their big passion, also aliens are reals, mars will fight you about this. they study astrohphysics and man nasa better get ready to offer them a job or mars will be….Sad
mars changes their hair and personal style like,,,, every week? one day they have blue hair and wear all black leather, other days it’s bubblegum pink and flowers everywhere, other days it’s just brown hair and oversized t-shirts with ugly 80s prints. karma karma chameleeeooon

The 2019 Pinterest Masterclass - Promote Your Online Store & Utilize Killer Strategy to Sell on Shopify, WooCommerce, Ect.
Tumblr media
You may think it’s funny...
But Pinterest is becoming a serious force to be reckoned with when it comes to driving traffic to your new online shop. With the advent of Shopify, Dropshipping, e-commerce solutions in general; Pinterest will help you grow your audience in 2019. Weather you’re selling funny shirts or scintillating lingerie or even stylish corgi hats for the household dog. You’ve got some seriously killer things that you need to share with the world; naturally, you want people to know about and buy these things. So how do you do that?
You’re not going to like the answer.
Start putting in the work: a metric ton of it!
But like I said, this is a Masterclass and I’ve got your back! So bust out your bookmarks and share with your business minded friends, this is going to be a long and informative read.
Part One: Setting Up Your Pinterest Business Account & Confirming Website
If you’ve already done this, or know how to do so, you can go ahead and scroll down to Part Two. I also talk about connecting your other social media profiles to Pinterest.
Step One - Creating Your Pinterest Business Account:
Go to https://www.pinterest.com/business/create/ and make an account. You’ll need to put in an email, password, business name and business type.
Step Two - Selecting Interests / Creating Your First Board / Browser Extension.
Selecting Interests: pick up to 5 topics (or search for them) that will populate your home feed. Ideally, you want things relating to your business.
Browser Extension: After you’ve done that, you might be asked to get the Pinterest Browser Button which lets you quickly save things to your Pinterest. I’ve included Firefox and Chrome below.
Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/pinterest/
Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pinterest-save-button/gpdjojdkbbmdfjfahjcgigfpmkopogic?hl=en
First Board: You’ll want to go ahead and make your first board while you’re here. Either from your home feed, or in the search bar, find a post that relates to things your audience will like. Click on the pin/image that grabs your attention and hit ‘save’. Creating a new board will pop up, so go ahead and give your first board a name.
e.g. Stunning Coffee Art would be the name of your board, where you pin pictures of cool coffee art made by baristas
Step Three - Profile Settings
Now head over to your profile settings, you should see it as the gear icon in the top right. If it doesn’t show up, try clicking the three ellipsis ‘...’  next to the notification bell, and go into Settings.
Once you’re on the new directory, go from Business Account Basics to Profile Settings. Upload a strong picture that relates to your business specifically, or a copyright-free image that evokes the spirit of your business.
E.g. I’m running Dave’s Awesome Coffee Shop and selling bags online; use this coffee image from Pexels. https://www.pexels.com/photo/aroma-aromatic-art-artistic-434213/
Bonus - Copyright-free Image Repository: Like I just used above, Pexels is a fantastic place to find copyright-free pictures for your online and or business needs. It’s always better to spend money, but if you’re just starting it’s better to have something over nothing at all. https://www.pexels.com/
About You / Location / Website: Once you’ve found the perfect photo, add a quick and succinct description of your business in the About You section.
Then, put your location if applicable.
After that, copy paste your website into the Website tab. You’ll confirm that in a minute.
Showcase: These are up to five boards that people on Pinterest will see when they head over to your profile. Just below Website on the Profile page, hit edit on showcase and go to slot 1. This is where you will pick the board you made earlier. Make sure to hit save.
Step Four - Confirming Your Website
Melissa Megginson has written a clean post on how to do this and I can’t imagine doing a better job than her. Open the bitly link in a new tab and come back when you’re ready.
Read it here: http://bit.ly/2N2h86w
Tumblr media
Step Five - Profile Optimization & Tricks
Connecting Other Social Media: Go into your profile settings and select Social Networks. Once inside, you can turn on any of the various buttons to connect your social media accounts to your Pinterest. This will give you access to friends / followers that are also on Pinterest; additionally, it will let you post on FB or Twitter the same time that you make a Pin on Pinterest.
Selecting The Right Username: You want to be as consistent as possible across not only Pinterest but all of your platforms. So if davesbestcoffee is taken you might try something like mmmdavesbestcoffee or RealDavesBestCoffee or even LoveDavesBestCoffee. Remember to KISS: Keep it simple stupid.
Relevant Keywords For Your Profile Description: When updating your profile description you want to include a few choice keywords that people might search. So instead of
#1 Dave’s Best Coffee: Home of Dave’s killer coffee shop where we sell beans, filters, cups and more!
#2 Dave’s Best Coffee: Home of Dave’s killer online coffee shop. Indulge in tasty espresso drinks, iced coffee, cold brew techniques, and foam art.
Remember to be honest with your description, and if you need help on keywords, simply go to the search bar and begin typing things related to your niche. So for example [Coffee] becomes ‘coffee bar’ ‘coffee table’ ‘coffee drinks’ ‘coffee deserts’
Part Two: Creating & Optimizing Pinterest Boards | Keywords For Titles & Descriptions.
Earlier you made your first board, so now we’re going to optimize it.
Pro Tip #1: Keep your Board Title to a maximum of 20 characters; anything longer will be cut off and thus become unsightly. Remember, you only have less than a second to make an impression.
Use Pinterest Board Keywords: Using our coffee example, we want to make a new board called Coffee Aesthetic. How do we know what keywords to use? Start by typing in keywords related to your niche in Pinterest’s search bar. It will suggest titles for you.
Broad vs Specific: When making new boards, and optimizing the one you have, you will want to have Coffee as a broad board. These are naturally harder to rank on. With Specific boards, you want to go with Coffee Aesthetic or Iced Coffee Aesthetic; these will have less competition and have a chance of boosting your Board boards.
How To Make A Killer Pinterest Board Description: The best way that I’ve found how to do this is to - once again - eloquently insert keywords. The research part of this is covered in Part Four below; but using our coffee example I’ve come up with this:
A perfectly simple way of researching is to type in the kind of board you want, pick some boards that have a description and a good size of followers (at least 1K) and modify it to fit your board.
DO: Include 1 - 3 emojis from https://emojipedia.org/
DO: Insert keywords that people will search.
DO: Keep your description about 2 - 3 sentences in length.
DON’T: Stuff a bunch of keywords into your description. The best kind of meta data is accurate and pleasant to read by humans.
DON’T: Use redundant keywords. In our coffee example, I tried to cut down on the word ‘coffee’ as much as possible. Why? Because 1 ‘coffee’ will also apply to ‘shop’ or ‘food’ or ‘drinks’. So when a user types ‘starbucks coffee’ your board will come up even though we didn’t type an exact match of ‘starbucks coffee’.
DON’T: Be dishonest with your keywords. People value integrity, there’s no need to be duplicitous.
Part Three: Creating Optimized Pins | Rich Pins | Give Value & Excite Your Audience.
DO: Pin 5 - 10 times a day. You need to schedule your pins and drip-feed them to your audience over time.
DO: Make sure you’re using vertical pins at a 2:3 size ration. Canva uses 735 x 1102.
DO: A combination of OC (original content) and RP (repins) because sharing is what Pinterest is all about. 70% repins to 30% original content is a good ratio to follow, but find what works best for you.
DO: Re-pin old content with a new image. You will want to do this with your best content once a week.
DON’T: Delete your old pins. When you re-pin / loop your pins, let the old ones remain since they could still go viral.
Filling Out Your First Board: Now that you’ve made an optimized board or two, I suggest you re-pin until you’ve got at least 5 pins on that board. Re-pin the top content in the niche your board falls under.
Then you’ll want to provide some valuable original content. So write a couple of blog posts or a nice infographic and start scheduling them. If you only have a few, just do 1 original content pin a day with your other pins being re-pins of good related content.
If you need ideas, just look through Pinterest and see what catches your eye. In this example, when I search coffee aesthetic, I’ve found a post about 10 cute cafes.
You can view the pin here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/554787247842956003/
You can view the article here: http://www.escapebuttonblog.com/10-cute-cafes-world/
So if you were Dave’s Killer Coffee online store, you’d make sure to include a Call To Action at the end of that blog post. That CTA could be: “Join our newsletter to get more free content just like this.” Or even: “Thanks for checking out these ten cute cafe’s. If you love coffee like we do, be sure to check out our own coffee beans.” With a product link to what you’re selling.
You could even do both of these things so long as you keep it short, simple, and sweet.
Rich Pins: Rich Pins allow people to see relevant meta-data right on the pin itself, which can be very useful and appealing to your audience. I’ve included two links to help you with this.
http://koehmstedt.tumblr.com/post/105273273762/how-to-enable-pinterest-rich-pins-on-your-blog
https://developers.pinterest.com/docs/rich-pins/overview/?
Giving Value & Exciting Your Audience: People are attracted to quality, and before people want to help or buy from you, you’ll need to give them something in return. So when you’re giving them something, give them something great. In depth articles, top ten lists, top 100′s, well-made infographics and recipes all do well.
Part Four:  SEO and Research section.
Research With Pinterest: In the search bar, start typing things that belongs to your niche. So start with Coffee. Now type space and go through the alphabet from a - z. Pinterest will give you valid suggestions; aim for 2 - 3 words for your Board Title.
Make sure to follow boards and people that are popular in your niche so you can look at all the things they’re doing right. Examine what they’re posting, their descriptions, titles and anything else.
Research With Answer The Public: Type in keywords on this website for some great ideas on what people are searching. https://answerthepublic.com/
Research With Google: Similar to how you used Pinterest, just typing ‘coffee’ into google with give you a lot of ideas. Do ‘how’ ‘why’ before coffee or type a letter a - z. For example ‘ccoffee’ brings up Caribou Coffee, so maybe you would write a quick review or the history of Caribou Coffee along with a killer image on your pin.
Research With Keywords Everywhere: Install this app on Google Chrome and it will show you suggestions as well as monthly searches and how high the competition is for them. https://keywordseverywhere.com/
Part Five: Pin Looping | How & When To Re-Pin Content
Pin Looping: This is when you re-pin your popular pins to boards with new images or descriptions. I suggest you do this once every 4 weeks. I don’t suggest you re-pin all at the same time across multiple boards. So if you’re re-pinning 10 cute coffee cafe’s for example, re-pin it to board A after a month, and then board B an hour later, board C an hour after that... so on and so forth.
In Part Six I talk about Tailwind, which will permit you to schedule and automate all of this easily. This costs money of course.
Part Six: Paid and Free Resources To Help You Succeed
Tailwind: https://www.tailwindapp.com/ this comes with a free trial but it does cost money. Basically it’s going to save you a ton of time, give you audience insights, do scheduling and pinning across multiple boards. For a full list of features look here: https://www.tailwindapp.com/features/small-business
NinjaPinner: ninjapinner.com I suggest using this for the auto-follow feature. Neil Patel, a social media guru, recommends that you don’t use anything else from this software.
Part Seven: Other Tips and Tricks
Keyword Your Images: When you’re uploading images, make sure you download them and rename them. So if I downloaded say an image of coffee I wanted to pin, and it was named ‘abc123.jpeg’ we would want to save it as ‘coffee-foam-art.jpeg’ so it is more relevant to search engines.
Multiple Images For Your Post: If you’ve made some really good content like an article or a recipe, it is better to make 2 - 3 images for that pin. Each time you pin it, try a new image and see which one resonates better. This is something called A/B Testing.

23 Mind Numbing Facts About Interior Plan Of A House | interior plan of a house
Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock
Outstanding Master Bedroom Interior Design Plan And … – interior plan of a house | interior plan of a house
The Interior Department — which manages the country’s 417 civic parks and governs hundreds of millions of acreage of added accessible acreage — made a arresting blank from a abstract adaptation of its new five-year cardinal plan. How We Planned The Beach House Kitchen
The beach house kitchen will be our seventh kitchen project (!!!) after redoing three of our own (this one’s our favorite), a showhouse that we did in 2014, a spec house for a local builder in 2016 (seen below – we loved that blue tile), and a local teachers’ lounge that we redid last year.
And while that sounds like a lot of kitchens to have under our belts, the process can still feel pretty daunting – probably just due to the sheer number of decisions that a kitchen reno brings. “What’s the most functional layout? Is that too many drawers or not enough? Will I live to regret the lighting? Is it all going to come in within budget?” So many questions. And decisions. And changing of minds.
But as much work as it is to plan, stress, overthink, and replan a kitchen – it can easily be one of the biggest improvements you can make to a house. And now that we’re so close to FINALLY installing the beach house kitchen (hello light at the end of the tunnel!), we thought we’d take you through the steps (and kitchen planning tools) that we used to make our plan.
That photo above is what the space looked like as of last week. The lights are hung, trim is getting painted, and the floor holes are all patched with matching reclaimed pine. Once they’re sanded and sealed we can begin the kitchen install! It’s feeling very real all of a sudden. And it’s a far cry from what it looked like when we first started planning the space last year:
I won’t rehash all of the floor planning we did (it’s in this post) but you can see where we ended up below. Well, mostly ended up (the master bath got rearranged one more time to accommodate a shower). But the important part is the kitchen, which you can see in the upper left of these schematics:
We made those initial floor plans in Photoshop (like I’m sure all the professional architects do…. right?) so it wasn’t precisely to scale and not even close to something we could rely on to order cabinets. So having made the decision to order our cabinetry from Ikea, we turned to their free 3D kitchen planning software.
It’s not my favorite interface in the world (you can read all my pros & cons in this post) but if you’re using Ikea products, it’s a great way to plan the precise items you’ll need. We also used it when ordering our laundry room cabinets and our bonus room built-ins (shown below), both of which we’ve been very happy with – so Ikea was a no-brainer for keeping the beach house kitchen looking good, without costing a fortune.
We went through a few different ideas and layouts within the software – like do we do upper cabinets or skip them? We eventually landed on no uppers, just because we’re suckers for open shelves and the cabinets were looking pretty heavy in the rendering, even in white (we want the room to feel balanced, not left-heavy with too much stuff on that wall as you walk into the room). And since this is going to be a weekly vacation rental, nobody is going to be living here for months on end, so we realized we’d have plenty of storage space for vacation goers – especially with the extra cabinets that we added to flank the back door.
One challenge with the Ikea software is that you can’t pull in products that aren’t theirs – so I couldn’t render our 40″ pink stove or the exact dimensions of the fridge we’ve had our eye on. And I can never get their shelves to look the way I want (this is reminding me that I really need to relearn Google SketchUp). So the renderings are a little imperfect, but this one is probably the closest to what it’ll be like (just add sconces, pendants, and shelves in your mind).
Before ordering, we also loosely mapped things out in real life to make sure we liked the clearance of everything. You can see our fancy stand-ins for the island. Not the big saw, just the wood scraps on the floor. Told you they were fancy.
It’s also pretty hard to get a sense of the finishes in these renderings, so we ended up making some mood boards to be sure we liked the road we were headed down. Here’s the final one, but I’ll show you how we got to this mix in a second:
1. Stove / 2. Faucet / 3. Hood / 4. Sconces / 5. Island Pendants / 6. Counter (inspo pic) / 7. Cabinet doors / 8. Fridge (inspo pic)
From the get-go, Sherry and I both agreed we wanted this kitchen to feel casual and unfussy. The beach is supposed to be relaxing, so we wanted the kitchen to feel the same way. One of our first big inspiration pictures is shown above as #7, because it just looks very chill. Still plenty nice, but not too formal or uptight (which is generally right where we’re aiming with this beach house). Sorry, I can’t find a source better than this one.
The flat-fronted cabinets really stood out to us in that picture because we’ve never been drawn to them before. They always struck us as crazy modern or too commercial (like a school cafeteria from the 90’s). But after hunting down more inspiration photos on Pinterest, we were officially flat-front converts for the beach house.
(sources: left image, right image)
You’ll also notice that 4 out of these 5 photos don’t show upper cabinets, which further confirmed our lean towards a more unfussy/casual look with lots of open space for the eye to move around.
(sources: left image, right image)
We haven’t chosen hardware yet because we’re waiting to see how everything looks once we have it installed – but the idea of leather pulls is pretty cool (and clearly they’re very popular with flat-front drawers). We’re considering a few other options, and we also might try to hunt down some wood knobs to play off of some of the old wood doorknobs in the house. We’re hoping the right choice will be much clearer once we can actually hold up some samples in the finished space, but here are a few of the ones we’re considering: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9
Another big source of inspiration for us is Orlando’s kitchen. He revealed it on Emily Henderson’s blog right around the time we were ordering ours, so it helped us lock in our decision to do butcher block counters (we actually switched our plan last minute to get the exact ones that he chose – these from Ikea). We even ordered extra butcher block so we can make our floating shelves from the same stuff.
(source)
People have mixed feeling about butcher block in a rental, but we like that it’s affordable (like 10 times more affordable than some other options) and we LOVE that we can sand and refinish any major beatings that it might take (can’t say that if someone cracks/scratches/stains an expensive stone slab). We’ve actually heard a ton of helpful info from those of you with butcher block counters about how to seal them / treat them so they look good and last, so we’ll definitely be sharing all of that once they’re in (and we’ll be honest about how they hold up too – so stay tuned for photos and stuff as they get used and abused).
Orlando’s kitchen was also reassuring because he used the exact fridge we were considering. We don’t have space for a large fridge and we worried this one might look cheap, but – phew! – it looks great.
All of these decisions were made back in April, and we happened to lock everything in right as Ikea was having their semi-annual Kitchen Event Sale (more on that in podcast episode #52). The total (for cabinets and counters) would’ve been about $3200 – but we got 20% off our entire order thanks to the sale. Which saved us about $600 and brought the total closer to $2,600. That even includes the sink, soft close drawers/doors, and a pull-out trash can!
But even with most of the big items ordered, we still had lighting to figure out. Our first challenge was actual brightness, because I, John Petersik, am a lighting over-thinker to the Nth degree. First, we nixed the idea of adding recessed can lighting because we worried it would feel too “new” for the look we wanted in this 100 year old house. We have a few recessed lights elsewhere, so we’re not totally against them for the house, but the kitchen/dining room ceiling is SUCH a large plane, we wanted to avoid having a bunch of glowing circles dotting those pretty extra-high ceilings.
In the past we’ve relied on recessed lights to provide most of the functional lighting in our own kitchens, with pendants providing task and accent lighting. But in the beach house, our kitchen lighting – two island pendants and three sconces (along with two lights over the dining table nearby) – would need to do it all. So we quickly realized we needed to nix anything with a solid shade, so that every bulb could cast light in all directions instead of just shining it down. For instance, anything like the ones in our house’s kitchen were immediately out of the running. Sorry, guys.
Even with that no-shades rule helping us narrow things down, we still had a ton of lights that we were considering. So I mocked up this graphic to get a better sense of how our options looked with the rest of the kitchen. This was a failed option we were just playing around with at first (note the solid shades on both the sconces and pendants) but it was a huge help to see things this way. The subway backsplash isn’t for sure either, just a nice simple choice that lets us focus on what lights could work best:
We considered a few multi-light pendants, but most of them got eliminated for being the wrong style (these felt too modern) or so large that they dwarfed the island (or broke the bank).
A lot of the lights we typically would choose in a heartbeat (like these guys from Ballard Designs) felt too traditional for the vibe we were going for once we saw them in the mockup. Much of that had to do with the pink stove I think. It’s really cool and old and fun, but it might not lend itself to anything too formal.
The other thing we started bumping up against was scale. For instance, we started to think these beauties were the answer to all of our problems: glass shades, vintage look, right finish…
…but I was alarmed by 6″ measurement in its description (and that was the LARGER option they offered). My rendering above wasn’t to scale, so I started making a new version that was a bit more representative of size – particularly of the light in proportion to the eight foot island. That shed A LOT of light on the situation (pun completely intended). These were definitely too small.
I’ll cut to the chase. We ended up with this, as you saw in the original mood board up top. The pendants are 15″ wide and the clear shades allow them to throw light in every direction. Oh how I wish they were still on the Internet to link to them for you (they’re even prettier in person than in photos) but they seem to be out of stock everywhere. They were Trent Austin from Wayfair, so cross your fingers they come back someday.
We love how large the glass shades are without feeling heavy. The room instantly feels a lot closer to “done” with them hung, like they’re just begging for an island to be there. And the rest of the cabinets. And the appliances.
The sconces have shades that are wire mesh, so the light passes through them just like we wanted. We actually saw them in a showhouse shortly after ordering them and they looked GREAT all lit up. You can see how they’re not solid a bit better in this shot (there’s one more across the room too, which you can see in the second picture in this post).
Okay and one last mock-up. We also did this one that included plans for the adjacent dining area, just to try to picture how that would work with everything going on in the kitchen. Of course it has a pair of capiz pendants, because it wouldn’t be a beach house without Sherry’s favorite material of all time.
We opted for two lights over the dining table so that from the couch in the living room, the kitchen lights wouldn’t intersect at an odd place (once centered fixture would have). We also thought it would be fun to try two smaller pendants instead of one large chandelier. They don’t look great in the shot above because they’re hung higher than they’ll eventually go (and there’s no table under them to ground them). Oh yeah and the capiz is all still wrapped in its plastic shipping. Mummified capiz is the new black.
So that’s where we are. We’re headed out there soon to finish restoring the tub upstairs and to see how a few last floor repairs went upstairs. There are just a few tiny things on the to-do list (like finishing a railing for the back stairs) and then floor sanding and sealing can begin! After that, we can finally get started on making this kitchen come to life… and finally get those Ikea boxes out of our garage, which I’m also pretty stoked about.
Psst- You can read all about our past progress at the beach house by clicking into Our Beach House category.
