Muriel, Marquise de Chambrun wearing the tiara.
An extremely rare opal tiara from the family of the Late Jean Pierre François Joseph Pineton de Chambrun, Marquis de Chambrun, Marquis d'Amefreville (1903-2004) and his second wife Muriel.
LONDON.- Dreweatts will offer an extremely rare opal tiara from the family of the Late Jean Pierre François Joseph Pineton de Chambrun, Marquis de Chambrun, Marquis d'Amefreville (1903-2004) and his second wife Muriel, Marquise de Chambrun. Jean Pierre Pineton was the eldest son of French politician and diplomat Charles Louis Antoine Pierre Gilbert Pineton de Chambrun (1865-1954) and his American wife, Margaret Rives Nichols (1872-1949). Jean Pierre married his second wife Muriel in married in 1963 and they spent their 40-year marriage between France, the United States and the Algarve in Portugal.
The de Chambrun family has a prominent history as French politicians in the French Senate and French Chamber of Deputies and were direct descendants of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), the French aristocrat and army officer who commanded American troops to victory in the American War of Independence. He was also a key figure in the French Revolution in 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830 and served in French parliament. Such was his impact that he was considered a national hero in both countries and gained the title of ‘Hero of Two Worlds’.
Jean Pierre and Muriel toured America lecturing about Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution and War of independence. Muriel also became a celebrated poetess and won several awards including Ohio Poet of the year in 1976 for her book of poems Sudden Spring and an award from Cincinnati University in 1970 for her first book Salisbury Cathedral. Jean Pierre and Muriel were fêted by American society and acknowledged by several American President's including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George Bush Junior for their work in promoting Franco-American relations.
Although profoundly deaf, Jean Pierre had studied biochemistry at the Institut Pasteur, and art at the Horace Vernet school. As a member of at the Cercle de l'Union Artistique in France, Jean Pierre became an acclaimed painter and designer of jewellery, wrought iron and crystal for the renowned firm Baccarat. With his background in jewellery, it is thought that the tiara was most probably designed by him. The tiara is exceptionally rare as it is set with opals, hardly ever seen in period tiaras, due to the stone’s fragility and also as some believed that opals held a strange power, that could bring bad luck to its wearer. This superstition was picked up in the British press, however it was eventually dismissed after it was a firm favourite with Queen Victoria, who during her reign owned multiple pieces of jewellery set with opals, which were said to have been the favourite gemstone of her husband, Prince Albert.
“To have a period tiara set with opals is extremely rare, as the opal stone is so fragile, with their composition mainly consisting of water and silica gel”, says Deputy Chairman and International Head of Jewellery, Silver and Watches at Dreweatts. “Of the very few other tiaras set with opals, is the Princess Marie of Denmark opal tiara, an exuberant Art Nouveau creation of large, towering opal set floral sprays. It has not been seen being worn in public since the wedding of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway in 1968.”
The tiara in the sale is an exuberant piece of mid-20th century jewellery design. Opals are highly attractive stones due to their colour play, as they show all the colours of the rainbow. When rotated in light, one can see different flashes of colour, which are caused by the microscopic silica spheres in the stone. The most sought-after colours are red and green. Opals were traditionally found in Eastern Europe, in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, in the 1870s, they were discovered in Australia. Since then Australia has contributed to around 90% of the global output of precious opals. The best opals are found in Lightning Ridge, with others come from Queensland and New South Wales. A small percentage of stones also come from Ethiopia, America and Mexico, however these are not as commercially viable as the Australian examples.
The opals found in this stunning tiara are of exceptional quality and we can therefore assume that these originated from Australia.” says James Nicholson. They are set into 18 carat gold scrolled framework, complimented by circular cabochon, circular cut and step cut ruby accents, as well as rose cut and old mine cut diamonds, adding an extra sparkle. Adding to the uniqueness of this particular tiara, it is intended to be worn more like an ‘alice band’ across the middle of the head, rather than at the front. This adds significant height to it, making it a fabulous statement piece.

The notion of building fences along portions of Finland's long border with Russia seems to have wide support, but Helsingin Sanomat reports that's not the case.
One of the few who are highly critical about the plans is researcher Jussi Laine from the Karelian Institute, according to the paper (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
Border fences and walls are expensive and they do not serve the purpose for which they are built, Laine noted. According to the researcher, if there is a will to cross it, people will figure out a way.
"People will get past the fences no matter the method," Laine tells HS, adding that those determined to cross will only find more dangerous methods and fall into the hands of smugglers and traffickers.
Therefore, building barriers could endanger people's lives and end up supporting organised crime, according to Laine.
"I'm not saying that Finland's border fence is completely useless, but I consider the disadvantages to be significantly greater than the benefits claimed," he says.
Stubb: Mistakes were made while PM
Former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb published a YouTube video in which he reflects on Finland's post-Cold war failures regarding Russia, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) writes.
In the video, the veteran politician admits he made four such mistakes while in office.
"I was wrong about visa freedom for Russians, Nord Stream, Rosatom, and about not being able to promote Finland's Nato membership as Prime Minister," Stubb says in the video.
Visa freedom did not genuinely improve Russo-Finnish relations and Nord Stream should never have been built, according to the former PM. He also adds that more could have been done to enhance Finland's nuclear energy sector. However, not advancing Nato membership while in office is perhaps one of Stubb's biggest regrets, the paper explains.
The longtime National Coalition Party politician Stubb served in multiple offices throughout his career including as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2008–2011 and Prime Minister in 2014–2015. He also served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Europe in 2011–2014 and member of the European Parliament 2004–2008.
"In politics, it is very difficult to admit your mistakes, because mistakes are not allowed. Still, many politicians, myself included, make mistakes," Stubb says.
Outstanding Young Person of the Year
The Junior Chamber International in Finland nominated Social media cleaning sensation Auri Kananen as one of this year's Outstanding Young Person of the Year title, Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun)reports.
This places her and two others in the broader international programme, Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP), which recognises young people who excel in their chosen fields or represent the best attributes of the world's young people.
Kananen has drawn a huge international following with cleaning videos she posts on the social media platform TikTok. The 28-year-old began cleaning people's homes for free while filming the process, a couple of years ago.
"Everything happened by accident. A couple of years ago, I started posting my own cleaning videos on Tiktok. Through that, I was contacted by a single parent of three children whose husband had committed suicide. She asked for help. Then, one weekend, I went to clean her house and uploaded a video on the subject to Facebook, where I told her story. The video got 13 million views," the social media star explains.
The 'queen of cleaning' has raised awareness about mental health as well as inspired appreciation for cleaners' work, which landed her the nomination, according to the paper.

This adds significant height to it, making it a fabulous statement piece. It is estimated to fetch of £12,000-£18,000 when it goes under the hammer in Dreweatts Fine Jewellery, Silver Watches and Object of Vertu sale on March 22, 2023.
Opal tiaras are extremely rare, and only one other tiara set with opals is known. The Princess Marie of Denmark opal tiara was an exuberant Art Nouveau creation of large, towering opal set floral sprays. The tiara was re-set by Princess Marie's daughter-in-law Princess Viggo, into a simpler diadem. This opal diadem was passed down to the Count and Countess Flemming of Rosenborg, and has not been seen being worn in public since it was last worn at the wedding of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway in 1968.
The present lot is an exuberant piece of mid 20th century jewellery design. Although unmarked, it is probably made in Northern Italy, and with his background in jewellery, it is likely that it was designed by Jean Pierre.
Opals are rarely found in tiaras due to the fragility of the stone, with their composition mainly made up of water and silica gel. They are highly prized due to their colour play, showing all the colours of the rainbow. When rotated in light, one can see different flashes of colour, which are caused by the microscopic silica spheres in the stone. The most sought after colours are red and green.

The opals found in the present lot are of exceptional quality, and so we can be fairly certain that these originated from Australia. They are set into 18 carat gold scrolled framework, complimented by circular cabochon, circular cut and step cut ruby accents, as well as rose cut and old mine cut diamonds, adding an extra sparkle.Adding to the uniqueness of this tiara, it is intended to be worn more like an alice band across the middle of the head, rather than at the front. 📷 + OPHELIA AND/OR RUBEDO IF MUN SO CHOOSES! <3
Send 📷 to have a picture taken of your muse with SCP-978 || ACCEPTING
🐇 || ooc. Rubedo got another ask of his own so he’ll be done there!
Subject: SCP-8713-B
Initial photo activity: Subject was photographed from the waist up while standing before a white wall while smiling for the camera and with neutral pose.
Result: Undetermined, Subject destroyed photograph before the details of its contents could be transcribed. Assistant Researcher ████ Mason who had taken the photograph and viewed it prior to destruction recalls the image taking place in a kitchen which appeared consistent with the 1930s. The photo to Mason's recollection contained 6 humanoid figures in some manner of leisure and play, a further two humanoid individuals can be seen outside a window and seemed to be speaking with one another. None of the contents of the photograph where graphic or explicit in any nature.
Comment: It seems that some manner of the contents appeared to trigger SCP-8713-B to experience an episode of brief and intense discomfort and paranoia. SCP-8713-B, following its destruction of the photograph was found to have returned to its containment cell of its own volition and refused to discuss either the contents of the photograph or its reaction to it when prompted. SCP-8713-B did not emerge from its containment chamber for the duration of its shift. SCP-8713-B, for reasons unknown, did not write of the events or contents of the photograph within its journal during its evening entry.
It was remarkably, no, even comically simple for Mason to get a photo of 8713-B, or Ophelia as he had come to know her. He remembered hearing tales of juniors having to run beside her as she insisted on continuing her work in the clinic rather than heeding their request for interview, or better, the tales of researchers, bright eyed and bushy tailed being severely instructed to make themselves useful or to leave, and walking dejected from the clinic.
Mason snickered to himself at the thought of that, he’d been working with Ophelia for what? Three years and she was nothing if not dedicated and no nonsense. He once mused that had she a mean bone in her body, she’d make a fine drill instructor. But for the topic at hand, he had been pleasantly surprised to find her agreeable as he pulled her off to the side.
Initially, when he had approached her, her voice held reluctance, like a dog pulling on its lead— though her task had thankfully been moving fresh bed linens to empty rooms, she hated to leave a job unfinished and hated worse to be distracted on the job. But she listened, Mason was a friendly face, she trusted him enough to think he would not waste her time, and when he posed to her the question of being a willing participant to a ‘new form of photography,’ her eyes lit up with curiosity and interest. Perhaps she could step away, just this once, for learning! They were not busy after all!
Standing with her back against the plain white wall, a broad smile worn across her face as proudly as a necklace of diamonds. She stared at the camera held aloft in Mason’s hands, only briefly blinking and flinching at the flash, before turning her attention back to him and opening her mouth to speak as the internal printer churned to lift and began humming as it printed her picture into Mason’s waiting hand.
Ophelia asked him, voice still bubbling with restrained girlish excitement about what they did now, as he laid the photo facedown on a cart, and he responded with a smile that they’d wait, and wait they did. Standing there in an awkward silence, waiting for the photo to develop. Minutes ticked by, passing like gallstones as the two waited, trepidation dragging every second on as though it were an hour.
After ten minutes, whether through frustration or confidence, he couldn’t tell himself. Mason threw up his hands and responded in the affirmative, whether or not it was truly done be damned, as he didn't want to wait an instant longer, and reached for the photo. Moving close, Ophelia peered over the Mason's shoulder, waiting to get the first glimpse at the image. However, as he turned the image around, Ophelia's blood ran cold and she froze in place, stuttering and stammering over her words as she asking, no, instructed Mason to drop the photo, before lunging forward and snatching the film from his grasp before he had even taken its contents to memory.
He had been about to complain and tell her to return it when he noticed the change in her demeanor and appearance, though still herself, her eyes were wild and her body tense and defensive- like a rat cornered by a cat, she stared at him and him her in complete silence, before he watched in horror as she not only ripped the photo to shreds as though it were nothing more than damp tissue shoved the remains into her mouth and ate it. After that, and with no further word, Ophelia ran off, leaving Mason in shock and awe and abject confusion. What the hell was that about?

Incident No.5 -
Fair & Lovely
Circa 1999 -
I was directed by THE FIRM to brief a Senior Counsel in Madras (Now rechristened by our political class as Chennai).
The Senior Counsel was a favourite of a particular bench of the Honourable Supreme Court of India and used to fly to New Delhi often. He was well respected amongst his peers both at the Apex court and before the Madras High court as he was known for his crisp to the point arguments which found favor with an overburdened judiciary comprising of judges who were mentally exhausted hearing counsels after counsels argue extremely well articulated irrelevance supported by baseless and pointless arguments, and that too for days at end.
The Counsel's home base being Madras, a conference was fixed at the Counsel's law chambers inside the Madras High Court premises.
I was to attend the conference at 10 a.m. sharp after which I was specifically informed that the Counsel would be preoccupied attending high stake matters before the Honorable Court and in so far as I was concerned missing this important conference time deadline would mean a late evening conference (of'course subject to the gentleman's availability) and an entire day in the city of Madras wasted, doing practically nothing.
In comparison to Bombay, Madras is a dull city which runs at an extraordinary slow pace. The people are genuinely good hearted and usually shy and prefer to keep to themselves. The people in Madras have managed to excel in the art of SLOW PACE and expeditiousness is frowned upon. The overall attitude is in complete contrast to the boisterous crowd one encounters in Bombay. This is one of the many reasons I love Bombay. Can never get used to a SLOW PACED life.
I decided to take the early morning flight out to ensure i was not late under any circumstances. Reached Madras airport and cabbed it all the way directly to the High Court building.
I had attended many court hearings before various levels of judiciary such as district courts, high courts, commissions, tribunals in different parts of the country. But nothing could prepare me for what I was about to encounter.
Outside the entrance of any and every court throughout the length and breadth of the country, a common feature is a stationery shop meant for the convenience of lawyers These shops sell everything from ball pens to loose sheets of paper to lawyer's coats and even gowns. This is commonplace.
The stationary shops outside the Madras High court were a bit different and in hindsight an experience by itself, which i will never forget.
Here there were four stationery shops bang outside the Court premises selling the very famous 'Fair & Lovely' cream (now renamed as 'Glow & Lovely'). Stationery items were not even being given a second look by anyone.
Fair & Lovely is not a cream but an extremely potent drug which has managed to exert an ironclad grip over most of the Southern parts of India.
The purportedly fairness cream is more lethal mentally than physically as most people in South India are literally addicted to this cream including highly educated lawyers. This cream in particular has an extremely toxic effect on one's overall mindset as it shamelessly promotes the concept that having fair skin is the epitome of beauty and sporting a dark epidermis is akin to being inferior in more ways than one.
For those who are not familiar with 'Fair & Lovely ' fairness cream, the cream is purportedly a fairness cream marketed by a leading listed International Fortune 500 Company and the cream's application promises a sea change from a person's naturally dark complexion to a glowing fair complexion. All these magical changes to the epidermis and that too within a period of fourteen days of usage. A person's genetic make up or the actual complexion the person concerned inherited at the time of his or her birth from his or her biological parents, be DAMNED.
Lawyers - juniors and seniors alike stood patiently in a que to get their hands on a small tube of cream retailing at Rs.5/-, before entering the court premises.
The stationery shop had more stock of F&L cream than actual stationery items. (The name of the shop could have been rechristened from Murugan Stationery Shop to Fair and Lovely stationery shop. Not a soul would have even noticed the change).
Every lawyer would buy the Rs.5/- mini tube of F&L cream and religiously squeeze the tube to the maximum extent possible and apply the cream on their face before entering the court premises. They would not rub the cream on their face but merely apply it. People entering the court premises looked like Zombies (Living dead).
When I dared to enquire about this peculiar custom I was met with stares as if i had stepped on a topic which was completely TABOO. The situation was similar to those sex education classes they had when we kids studying in school, when we were too embarassed to ask anything, due to the sense of SHAME we were brought up with
One junior advocate finally garnered up the courage and explained to me as follows - 'Saar, you are phair. You don't require. We are dark. This cream makes us glow'.
I queried further - "Sir, why do you merely apply the cream on your face. Why not rub it all over your face?"
A prompt reply came to me as follows -
'Saar, the sun rays penetrate the cream deep in our skin and makes us glow. Why waste the cream by applying it Saar? You should have faith in father nature'.
I immediately thought of correcting the gentleman saying it was Mother nature and not Father nature. I thankfully decided against it as maybe in South India it is Father nature. Nature has to have a father, right?
The clock was about to strike 10. I entered the Counsel's chambers on dot and managed to get a good 45 minutes patient hearing with the Learned Counsel.
Just then a budding junior lawyer entered chambers and informed all present that the Senior's matter would be called out soon.
The Senior Counsel put on his band, gown and clutched in his hand the case papers and told his junior - 'We have to leave immediately DAA'.
The junior nodded and said - 'Saar you have phorgotten'
The Senior Counsel said - I have my specs DAA. I haven't forgotten anything DAA
The junior then handed over a Rs 10/- tube of Fair & Lovely brightness glow cream (mega size with 50% extra cream for the sum of Rs.5/- paid extra) to the Senior Counsel who then retorted - 'I don't know what I would have done without you DAA. Nandri Vanakkam'.
I cabbed it back to the airport after a successful meeting and realised that in Madras, beauty was definitely NOT skin deep.

Jeugdraad creëert bewustwording over klimaatverandering in Commewijne
Tumblr media
Read the full article
