my comic from the @neverturnbackzine! truly one of my favorite zines i've been a part of :]
some extra insight/fun facts about the process of this piece below the cut 💥💥💥
posting pieces from collaborative zines is always something i struggle with because i look back and think of how i would do things differently now, but i learned a lot working on this comic and even developed some style techniques that i still use!
Fun Fact 1: the panel where shadow Fucking Disintegrates That Guy is technically traditionally drawn! i couldn't get it right in clip studio so i just started frantically scribbling in a notebook and got it eventually lol
highly highly recommend scribbling stuff out in a notebook, scanning it on your phone, and then dropping it into a canvas to edit later if you ever have trouble sketching something.
Fun Fact 2: a lot of the overlay/background effects were made in Kid Pix Deluxe 3D. i created a whole collection of various textures/abstract effects for this comic that i've been using in my art since last year. you can even find them scattered through my team dark zine lol. here's a few of them:
similarly, the background at the bottom of page 2 is actually a warped photo i took of a bunch of headphone wires. this is the original:
Fun Fact 3: i made this comic during a very busy and wild period of time last year so this is what the final panel looked like for a while before i fully finished it LMAO
ok yay thanks for reading bye

Is the Fall of the House of Usher a compilation of Poe's stories rather than just the title? (Also I gotta reread stuff now, it's spooky season)
Yeah, kinda! It's a modern take on many of Poe's stories, not in an anthology sort of way, but rather one big narrative that incorporates a lot of the most iconic stories into it, with Roderick Usher being the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, and his children dying one by one. It's very fun to try and catch all the references, big and small, so if you're a Poe fan--and you like Flanagan's work--you're definitely gonna enjoy it!

Yo so what is Not For Broadcast actually about, I see all your posts about it but I'm still not even sure what genre it is (looks very chaotic and intense!) and would be interested if you want to talk more about it
Yeah, this game does have some incredible out of context screenshots to make everyone go 'well I thought I knew what this was about but turns out I have no idea'.
But yeah, let me explain: Not for Broadcast is a video game that would best be classified as a simulator, in terms of gameplay (and I've just learned a new term which definitely applies: FMV, or full-motion video, which means that videos with real actors are an integral part of the game!).
The game centers around the National Nightly News, a news program in fictional Britain (?), and their coverage following the election win of Advance, a left-leaning political party. You play as Alex, the editor (or whatever their title might be, you get it) of the show. During the broadcasts, you'll be switching from camera to camera to get the perfect shots, dealing with interference in the signal, and censoring any swearwords that might pop up during the show (oh, and edit musical numbers! THERE ARE MUSICAL NUMBERS I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW AMAZING IT IS). It's definitely hectic and chaotic, and if you've seen me be like 'well I have no idea what just happened' it's because paying attention to everything at once is a definite challenge (but super fun!).
Of course, because this is the news, the politics of the new government are a central part of the game. As the one in the editing room, your choice will affect the story, so you can choose to censor on behalf of the government, or ally yourself with those who are dissatisfied with it (or be neutral!). And boy does it get complicated as the years go by. There are 14 epilogues in total, (depending on your choices and which faction you favored) so plenty of content to get to! There are also 'choose-your-own-adventure' like sections about Alex and their family outside of the broadcast bits, so you get to take care of your family as well (it can end badly).
And of course, the characters are just the best. Anchors Jeremy Donaldson and Megan Wolfe, and floor manager Jenny are all my besties and I love them, but there are so many amazing characters that just make you fall in love with the game and really care about the outcome.
Oh, and it's just...really fucking funny. It's right up my alley.
Anyway, I love NFB. Y'all should play it.
