Happy Midwinter! In Norse tradition, Odin was heavily associated with Midwinter celebrations (jól), likely because Odin was a god of the dead, and thus was also the god of the “dead” time of year. In the Norse variations of the Wild Hunt myth, it was Odin who led the dead to the afterlife, and this was thought to happen around the winter solstice.

One of Odin’s other names was jólnir, “Yule One”, and theories abound about his influence on Santa Claus/Father Christmas (of course particularly the version of that figure known in Northern Europe) and I have seen some claims about Odin as a gift-giving figure, but not really ones from credible sources, so would have to pick up a book on it before I repeat any of that lol.

it’s this short song that you traditionally close off christmas tree dancing with, opening the circle around the tree to instead run around the house
