Why is no one talking about the Star Ocean Second Story R demo from Gamescom?
I haven't seen any US Youtube channels or twitter channels talk about this, so I wanted to make a quick summary of some features we've learned through recent announcements and the demo preview!
Here are the new features we found out about so far:
3 hit basic attack combos (from the PSP version) stayed. We knew this from previous trailers, but I'm noting it again.
Assist Characters get EXP (From what we can tell this doesn't apply to Reserve members, which can prevent overleveling / SP waste, which I'm happy about) You can see this below the party's EXP increases. This is also a good look at the Battle Results menu
Bonus gauge returns from 3/4, although we don't know a lot about it. This includes Chain Battles! (I hope we get EXP or Fol bonus returning but not the horrible, easy-to-break system 3 had.)
Our first look at the Field Menu! Includes full portraits, a reorganized menu, and some party banter
Party banter is present on the menu AND in the field
We also see a mini-map in the field, which has been previously shown but is a new addition
Battles are no longer random / visible enemies
The player can now gain battle initiative / back strikes, resulting in enemies being stunned at the start of battle (this isn't present in the original versions of SO2)
First look at the loading screen! (Come on, Bunny!)
That's all the new changes I've found so far. If there's any I missed, let me know!

The Tales of series is my favorite game series of all time and I wanted an excuse to draw every character from the games I played (there is so many and I will forget some of them just watch me) So I decided to go about it by organising everyone by hair colour I guess.
Almost added Asbel here but decided to keep him for the pink/purple category (yes I made a whole plan and no I’ll probably never manage to finish it).
Pascal might have fitted this group as well but I kinda forgot until now that she has red in her hair.
So, 2023... has been all over the place for me, personally.
I've spent most of it in various stages of unwell, my mental health swinging up and down without pause and my forever mysterious IBD issue (is it crohn's? colitis? decades of doctors still don't have a clue!) basically making me incapable of eating anything without evacuating it immediately afterwards. And there are other things I don't particularly want to talk about so, yeah. Not exactly fun.
But.
I spent this year continuing with a job I love more than I could have ever imagined. While I can't talk about one of the projects I worked on yet, Metaphor: ReFantazio has been announced with huge excitement, with joyful reactions and analysis videos and fanart and it's just so incredible to be a part of the team that helped write it. It still doesn't quite feel real.
Of course, Sega has planned massive layoffs in a few months, including my localization department, so I doubt I'm going to have my dream job much longer. But characters I wrote are on the latest cover of a famous magazine, and at least that's a pretty damn amazing legacy to go out on :)
I just did a deep dive into the Shadow Hearts series and holy shiiii
I'm not going to duplicate it here because it's long and has tons of research, images and links about what is cool about this video game series that lived and died from 1999~2007.
I finally listened to Nopes!A Funeral of Flowers and while i prefer the FE16 versions...
AFOF is basically Rhea's theme, it's beautiful and yet encompasses her tragedy at the end of SS because the plot has her suddenly grow mad and the cast has to take her down - for some reason FEH tried to honeypot around but ultimately doesn't make sense.
In Nopes?
It only plays on Supreme Bullshit (Golden Shower has a special Nopes!made song)!
It's oddly heroic, like, a hero making their last stand but... it fits, after all, Rhea's the Hero who sacrifices her life to take down Thales!
TFW even the OST reveals Rhea is the hero of Supreme Leader's protagonist route :/
In a year when God of War: Ragnarok and Elden Ring came out it feels really odd to be telling everyone that they need to actually be playing an indie RPG called Chained Echoes
But it’s the truth. It’s like if Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics had a baby with Neon Genesis Evangelion
If that sounds awesome to you then, congrats, you’re the target audience for the best retro RPG in years
If you were able to create a character for DC comics/lore. What would they be like? And which powers would you like them to have? Nice work, author. Love your writing!
💌 : hmmm, that's hard! i feel like i have so many ideas, but i've never done enough world-building to make it more interesting beyond surface-level powers, lol. but since i finished a book that was kind of magical, i shall introduce. . .
maxwell baker / arcus.
a divine wizard whose powers can create and manipulate the skies in the beginning of his lore! perhaps maxwell will gradually be granted powerful divinity powers through his loss of hope after a tragic event? i'm not good with building up powers, lol, but i can imagine him being a big help for support uses in team-battles!
as for personal background, i'd love to see a more gentler but authoritative figure / leader in comics! maxwell is a new teacher in his city, where he teaches at a secret / underground school for children with powers, conducting core lessons on how to control your powers and emotions. his co-workers dismiss him because of his lack of experience, but he remains optimistic because in the end, he's here for his students.
perhaps that tragic event where he breaks down and loses all hope is when the school is suddenly infiltrated and destroyed by an organization or something that wants to utilize the students as their lab-rats! many faculty members are left for dead due to the sudden surprise, and it's only maxwell left to survive as his powers were little to no use in stopping the students being taken away!
and maybe his journey throughout his lore is learning to believe in himself, bringing the students back (at least those who were taken alive), and uncovering a more sinister organization at-hand and how to defeat it once and for all. dun dun dunnn.
not that great, a little cheesy, but i did my best, ok. anyways here are some outfit inspirations (i didn't draw this LOL, but not sure who to give credit to :o). and also not me suddenly making dc comics into a shounen or magika girl manga, like pls.
