reminder to myself to find and upload the article about the gendered enlightenment/scientific reason vs superstitious persecution in Carmilla and it’s resulting ambiguously supernatural narrative because. it’s so formative to the way I think and write about ds lmao it needs to be on some kind of blog syllabus.
#carmilla ... but written by dr hoffman instead of dr hesselius. when she eventually writes that book she was supposed to be doing.#more than anything anything else carolyn's death scene in hods is a PERFECT echo of carmilla's slaughter.#framed in that perfect condemnatory v of the male head of household figure surrounded by militant police – where carolyn's overall sin is#not lesbian transgressive female desire but incestuous (even though she's still a lesbian in my heart)#like ! i don't know. vampires real true they are both metaphorical AND literally going to suck ur blood. same with phoenixes.#but there's a lot there to .. consider. many fractured reflections of cut crystal rather than a pane of glass? you hear me?#➤ ooc. ┊ she’s nauseous, she’s hysterical, and she’s exhausted.#i think... this is true particularly at the end of arcs where the threat is vanquished. things are always rather abrupt in a way#that leaves me reeling a tiny bit and not always in a conclusion that's ... certain beyond all doubt? there's often some little qualifier.#or you hear it relayed back to the family. collinses noted always for their truth telling to their own clan! esp when making their own myth#and i always ALWAYS think the obfuscating that goes on between 1795 and the 60's. joshua concealing the nature of his son and#of his wife's death. barnabas choosing to retell the josette myth in a way that favors him and his desire.#the way institutions like the hospital or windcliff or laura's sanitarium in phoenix are resting on an uneasy boundary between#straight medicine and superstitious practice –– often as a tool to suppress supernatural wrongdoing or a bandaid to fix it.#and what makes the link to carmilla so compelling to me is that the Studied Experts are the ones with the supernatural knowledge that#makes them so certain in their course. characters like julia ; stokes ; even dr. guthrie –– all accredited ! all very bright !#and in a similar vein the endless quest for the Logical Explanation is seen as (somewhat rightfully) silly – i.e. roger's stubbornness#in refusing to buy into the time travel – witches – laura as reincarnated phoenix – etc etc#when We Know the monstrous truth and he's clinging to a silly fancy of logic – of reason.#anyways am i making sense. i fear not.#compels me though

I Love Your Work (2003)
In today's review, I deal with obsession in early 2000s Hollywood. As I attempt a #positive review of Adam Goldberg's directorial debut I Love Your Work #GiovanniRibisi #FrankaPotente #JoshuaJackson #MarisaCoughlan #ChristinaRicci #JasonLee #VinceVaughn
It used to be the case that the image that public-facing celebrities present, may indeed be far from reality. That’s becoming less and less certain with the rise of social media, and the supposed openness of the idols, yet the facts still reminded us that they are as human as the rest of us, with all warts included. In 2003, decided to take his debut in the directing chair to new heights, by…

saw x: your guide to the new & returning characters
hi everybody!! i’ve been keeping up with all the new updates, leaks, and speculation about saw x for quite awhile now. in light of that, and with the movie’s impending release, i thought i would put this together for everyone’s ease & reference 👍🏻
this post will contain some information from the official saw x production notes released by lionsgate, which in turn does contain some spoilers about events in the film. furthermore, for returning characters, we’ll only be looking at characters explicitly and visually confirmed to be returning as of 9/20/23 (sorry hoffman).
Tumblr media
we’ll go ahead and start with john kramer! saw x first finds john attending a cancer support group, still in the city. there, he meets a man who’s had great success treating his disease with experimental swedish oncologist doctor finn pederson. intrigued by this, john ends up venturing to mexico city to seek out an experimental, not-fully-legal treatment for his cancer with finn’s daughter, another oncologist named cecilia pederson. when the doctor and her team turn out to be nothing more than scammers, though, john swiftly acts to take revenge on them.
the production notes (which you can read in their entirety here, if you’d like) make a point of talking about how this movie is going to showcase a more human and conflicted version of john than we’ve seen before— as he’s still relatively early in his jigsaw journey, and as he’s fully interacting face-to-face with his victims, we’ll get to see john being openly challenged by his victims for the first time, and wrestling between his own moral codes and the accusations that he’s a murderer being thrown at him by his victims.
Tumblr media
next up, we have amanda young!! contrary to what some initial speculation/advertisements suggested, i believe she’s going to be a major player in this film, with her emotional arc perhaps even rivaling john’s. about her role in this movie, director kevin greutert says: “it was an opportunity to go deeper into where she is at an earlier point in her relationship with john, before her guilt, insecurities, and doubt corrupted her against john’s work. in this story, we see amanda’s manic cheekiness, as well as her vulnerability and affection for john. but she has doubts about the violent and cruel aspect of the work they’re doing together.”
greutert goes on to say that amanda finds herself identifying with one of the victims of the pederson clinic games, and this in turn drives her urge to partake in the games and to start her down the road of being at odds with john’s morality. i have a pretty good idea of who amanda’s sympathetic victim is going to be, but we’ll get to that shortly.
Tumblr media
actress synnøve macody lund plays doctor cecilia pederson, the head of the scam ring that lures john to mexico city and pretends to cure his cancer. though cecilia is capable of appearing warm and caring, at her heart, she is a selfish and manipulative person, more concerned about herself than about any of her victims or even her staff. lund says that there is a spark of recognition and similarity between john and cecilia when they first meet, but as the games begin, cecilia does her best to challenge john and “try to break him.”
cecilia’s father, doctor finn pederson, is also an oncologist, although it is currently unclear whether he’s legitimate or not. there is some speculation that he may be the “experimental doctor” mentioned by william easton in saw vi. he is portrayed by donagh gordon. (no picture here bc the mobile app only allows 10 photos per post 😔)
Tumblr media
joshua okamoto is listed as playing both diego and a different character named doctor cortez. diego is the driver who brings john between the hacienda where he’s staying and to his appointments with doctor pederson; okamoto describes him as friendly and talkative, almost like a tour guide. doctor cortez is an “enigmatic” physician that john sees during his appointments. it is (imo) unclear at this point whether the two characters are really meant to be two distinct people— to me, it makes more sense that diego is only pretending to be doctor cortez, but that’s just my speculation.
Tumblr media
octavio hinojosa will be playing mateo, a veterinarian who moonlights as cecilia’s anesthesiologist during john’s surgery. hinojosa says that mateo has gotten involved in “some shady business” — aside from pretending to be a doctor, mateo also sells drugs from his veterinary office. hinojosa doesn’t say much else about mateo’s personality, and the production notes only describe him as a “scummy drug pusher.”
Tumblr media
renata vaca plays gabriela, who is both one of the addicts that mateo sells drugs to and a member of the pederson scam ring in her own right. gabriela pretends to be john’s housekeeper, and before the scam is revealed, the two of them actually begin to bond and have a nice moment together. when john realizes he’s been duped, vaca says that gabriela’s betrayal “breaks his heart.” while john still wants to test her, vaca says that john still sees goodness in gabriela and hopes to restore it by testing her.
i mentioned above that amanda forms a bond with one of the pederson clinic victims— given how similar gabriela’s background sounds to amanda’s, and given that we can see amanda straddling gabriela in the photo above (you can just barely make out gabriela’s fur coat in the corner), i would be VERY surprised if it’s not gabriela.
Tumblr media
played by paulette hernández, valentina works as a fake nurse in the pederson scam ring. the production notes don’t have much else to say about her character, but it does talk about the nature of her trap and pretty heavily implies that she doesn’t make it very long into the pederson clinic games. (we’ve also already seen a decapitated body in several of the trailers and commercials for the movie, so maybe they just don’t care about spoiling this particular death.)
Tumblr media
isan beomhyun lee plays the custodian whose face has already been made famous via the eyeball vacuum trap posters! he isn’t given a name in the production notes, but the notes do mention that john catches him while he’s still in the city, BEFORE leaving for mexico. john punishes the custodian for “contemplating a theft of a patient’s belongings.” the fate of the eyeball vacuum victim has already been made pretty clear, so i wouldn’t expect to see much more of him than we already have.
Tumblr media
steven brand plays parker sears, who the production notes tell us is a fellow patient of john’s, seeking treatment for his thyroid cancer from cecilia and her scam ring. however, it’s pretty clear that there’s something more going on with him— if it wasn’t enough that we see him in the first trailer holding a gun (and NOT in any of the other pederson clinic games), the production notes themselves make a point of saying that “not everything or everyone is as it seems.” it’s my personal speculation that he’s some sort of undercover cop— perhaps one who was already on the way to busting the pederson scammers before john came in and started doing things his own way.
Tumblr media
finally, we have michael beach playing henry kessler. the production notes have nothing to say about him, and we also haven’t seen much about him in any trailers or spots just yet. that said, the following is purely my own speculation.
the production notes mention that john first learns about cecilia from a former member of his cancer support group in the saw metro. i believe that kessler may be that former member. this would subsequently make him complicit in john’s scamming, and as such, i believe kessler might be the person we briefly see being tortured in the bathroom during the trailer.
SO there you all go!! hopefully this guide was interesting, helpful, and/or informative :) thank you for reading!!

Ropes Increasing in Number in the Airship
Tumblr media
Original date of the post: 6 of December, 2007 Disclaimer applied
“ “What is going on with the increasing number of ropes appearing throughout the airship?” has been a question very frequently asked in Rule of Rose forums.
Here’s my take on it.
I think that an overlooked key to answering this question is to notice what has happened to the background music during the final airship chapter (“The Rag Princess Sews”).
There isn’t any background music in that chapter… except for the background music during the times of imp attack, and during the power outage (which is a time of imp attacks that end when the power is restored).
Why is there no chapter-specific background music in “The Rag Princess Sews” chapter?
The answer is: Because, instead, we are given sounds. Sounds of the airship subjected to structural stress, creaking and groaning.
The airship is breaking apart.
You can see signs of the airship breaking up in all of the damaged cat-walks you encounter when chasing Joshua: some catwalks are dead-ends, other cat-walks have their gaps linked by planks of wood. You can also see steam or smoke escaping from the pipe connected to the furnace in the Sector 7 Cargo Bay. The Sector 7 Cargo Bay is that area of the airship that has two features of the orphanage classroom: a blackboard and a furnace. The Hoffman boss-battle occurred there during the “Sir Peter” chapter.
The majority of the increasing numbers of ropes in the airship seem to relate to two functions: (1) to provide structural support, holding the airship together, and (2) to secure loose objects that might pose a hazard during turbulence or a crash.
And, in a sense, the airship is going to crash.
When the orphanage massacre occurs, and Jennifer is the only survivor from it, this sole-survivorship will parallel the airship crash from Jennifer’s past during which Jennifer’s parents died, and all others died, leaving Jennifer as the only survivor.
And the death of the orphans will end their ability to play airship… which I think is, symbolically, the crash of the fantasy airship.
Players of Rule of Rose, if they have found the newspaper article in the Smoking Room (during any airship chapter following “The Unlucky Clover Field” chapter), will know that the orphans are doomed. That article reads:
20 December 1930
A tragic multiple homicide has occurred at an orphanage in Cardington resulting in the deaths of all the children housed there. Among the dead was one adult, Gregory M. Wilson, a local resident. Analysis of the crime scene suggests that Wilson shot himself with a pistol. Police have identified him as their prime suspect in the murders of the children.
Just as the newspaper article foreshadows the doom of the orphans, so also do the increasing numbers of ropes in the airship foreshadow the doom of the orphans. The airship is coming apart, despite increasing efforts to hold it together.
Are there other significant aspects to some of the ropes which appear in “The Rag Princess Sews” chapter?
I think so.
I’ve already mentioned one other aspect in the post: “Ropes as Spider-Webbing”
An additional aspect of the ropes in the “Rag Princess Sews” chapter seems to be involved in the case of the ropes in the Filth Room. The arrangement of these ropes seems to correspond to the arrangement of ropes later to be found in the Filth Room of the orphanage in “The Funeral” chapter.
Might there be yet other aspects, symbolic aspects, to the ropes that appear in “The Rag Princess Sews”?
It seems likely.
The pig-imps, that appear for the first time in that chapter, have ropes wrapped around their bodies. So do the regular imps later in the chapter when Jennifer is chasing Joshua. I strongly expect that this has a symbolic significance.
What exactly is that symbolic significance?
Symbolic interpretation can be very much a matter of opinion, and it is hard to give an interpretation that has any certainty to it.
A possible interpretation might be one that relates to what I wrote earlier about the foreshadowing of doom: the orphans are “tied” to their fate and can’t escape it. Jennifer isn’t time-traveling. She can’t actually alter the past, only remember it. The approaching doom of the orphans is inevitable because it has already occurred. And some of the significance of the increasing ropes throughout the airship might be to symbolize the increasing sense of this inevitable doom closing-in, the ties of fate binding the orphans and their world more and more. This meaning might overlap some of the other meanings of the ropes in the airship that I’ve already discussed.”

Tharold Rogers, Professor of Political Economy at Oxford University in the middle of the 19th century wrote: "At that time (ie. the middle ages) a laborer could provide all the necessities for his family for a year by working fourteen weeks."
William Cobbett, after visiting Winchester Cathedral, told his son: "That building was made when there was no poor wretches in England called paupers.. when every laboring man was clothed with good woolen cloth and when all had plenty of meat and bread.."
It was in the middle ages of Europe when the magnificent gothic cathedrals were constructed with voluntary subscription and labor, edifices of such beauty and power as to amaze the modern onlooker. Dozens were constructed, all without mortgages or debt of any kind; without usury. A society without usury today is derided as inevitably backward, if not impossible. "
quoted from: Usury in Christendom, by Michael Hoffman.
