Beinart Gallery presents 'Antipodes 2020', a group art exhibition of new works in a variety of media by an array of highly skilled figurative artists working in Australia.
Beinart Gallery will be donating 5% of all sales in this exhibition to Seed: Australia’s first Indigenous youth climate network.
Opening reception is Saturday January 18 from 6-9pm (AUS ET) at Beinart Gallery, 1 Sparta Place, Brunswick, VIC, 3056, Australia.
The exhibition will be on view until February 2 2020.

The Art of Jonathan Edward Guthmann
Jonathan Edward Guthmann is an Australian artist working in a variety of mediums. His preferred technique is intaglio printmaking, a traditional method that involves making incisions into a sheet of metal, often with the use of corrosive liquids that bite into the surface, leaving a network of incised lines. These lines are then used to hold ink and with the aid of a large press, the resulting image is transferred onto dampened paper. Jonathan also works with pigmented inks, charcoal, graphite, conte and oil paints, often mixing these mediums with a unique approach to create distinctive works. He also has an academic background in theology, an area of research he is very passionate about and which greatly influences his creative life.

Life and Death Are Equal Arts at a New Group Exhibition

The many group exhibitions hosted at beinArt gallery are known for bringing together a particularly varied and materially diverse artworks. Flesh & Bone exhibition, their latest collection of ink drawings, wire sculptures, and watercolor paintings, is a testament to that reputation. The show features a macabre display of works that celebrate the biology of life and death. Jonathan Guthmann’s etchings on Hahnemühle paper feature neo-Gothic, almost folkloric illustrations of a human skeleton that’s been explicitly identified as ‘death.’ Erik Thor Sandberg includes a similar skeletal figure in one of his Italian Renaissance themed oil paintings.

But the works in Flesh & Bone aren't exclusive to the homo sapien, either. Sam Yong’s The Tell-Tale Heart shows a vivid and crisply painted crow nibbling out the inside of a dead rabbit. From a combination of animal bones, garnet and smokey quartz crystals, artist Gerard Greer creates skeletal sculptures of infernal creatures that look like they’re straight out of Guillermo del Toro films. Greer’s work bears visual similarities to Jake Hempson's 3D-printed sculptures of bones taken from the supernatural and grotesque. Perhaps one of the more transgressive works in the show is Kit King's oil painting of a skewered hot dog that’s been carved to look like a penis. Jonathan Payne's fleshlette sculptures are bizarre surrealist characters put together from deformed body parts made out of polymer clay, acrylics, and human hair. Jonathan Guthmann is an Australian artist born in 1980, currently based in Melbourne.
In being an artist, I am carrying on a tradition of painting, drawing and printing that extends multiple generations into my family history, to my knowledge at least four, in the upper parts of Bavaria, Germany. Because my art has conveyed so many different things at different times over the years, to describe the nature of my work as an artist is somewhat difficult. In one sense it is simply the visual aspect of my personal search for self-understanding, but it is also much more than that (...)
