"I’m so glad that they’re still doing this. Keep calm. Carry on," Kiara said to the boys as she stuffed the change from their tickets back into her wallet.
It would have been an understatement to say that JJ and Pope hadn’t been eager to attend the outdoor movie night hosted by the Island Club. In fact, they'd spend thirty minutes listing all the things they would rather do when Kiara proposed the idea. She'd let them grumble about going for the better part of an hour since she knew there was no way the pogues would let her go to something on Figure Eight alone. Pogues always had each other's backs, always. Kiara figured the least she could do was pay their entry fee. Plus, she knew JJ and Pope didn't exactly have extra cash laying around for movie nights.
She would have dragged all three of the boys with her but John B hadn't been back to the chateau all day. Since the cell towers were still down thanks to the hurricane, she could only guess where he was.
"Welcome to the summer movie series. All proceeds go to...." The announcer's voice boomed over the loudspeakers as Kiara lead the boys to an empty space in the middle of the crowd.
"Back to OBX life. You know? Aren’t you guys glad that I made you come?" She really didn't have to ask, she was already sure of their answer.
"Ecstatic," Pope responded, his tone clearly lacking enthusiasm.
"My couch was pretty comfy, I’ll be honest," JJ echoed.
"We’re out of the green zone, man," Pope leaned over, commenting to JJ, out of earshot of Kiara. She didn't know about Topper's boat and Pope wasn't really interesting in bringing her in as another accessory to the crime.
"Dude, tranquilo, okay?" JJ whispered back.
"We're in the middle of Kooklandia. This is the last place I wanted to be."
"Shut up, Pope," JJ snapped, his wide eyes with warning. This was Kiara's thing, they weren't gonna let the Shakespearesque fued between Kooks and Pogues ruin her fun.
-
"Hey, uh…can I get two Pepsis, pleases?" Kiara asked the employee currently manning the snack bar.
"Sure," he replied.
Kiara slide the money for the sodas across the counter and took the cold drinks, watching Rafe slowly approaching from out of the corner of her eye.
"Hey, Kie," Rafe said. Kie felt her pulse spike at a nickname he'd originally given her. "Hey, what’s up? How are you?"
"I’m fine," she replied, intentionally angling her body away from him, her gaze resting anywhere but on him. For someone whose presence she uses to be able to relax in, now the sight of Rafe put her on edge.
"Good, good. Um...Tell your boy that we know what he did." Rafe held her stare and Kiara couldn't stop her lip from curling up in contempt.
"Sorry, what boy are you talking about?"
"Uh, he’ll know." Rafe smiled as if this conversation was bringing him some wicked sense of pleasure.
Rafe opened his mouth as to say something else but Kiara turned away from him. "Bye," he called to her as she walked away.
"Douche," Kiara said, loud enough that she was sure he would still hear her. She threw a glance over her shoulder, feeling Rafe's eyes still watching her.
-
Kiara handed Pope a Pepsi. "Just saw Rafe, and he said, and I quote, 'Tell your boy that we know what he did.' What is that?" She finished, handing JJ the second soda.
"Um...Where is he?" JJ asked back.
"Right there." Pope and JJ's heads turned around to look with her.
"Great the whole death squad," Pope said.
JJ grabbed the top of Pope's head, knocking his snapback off as he forced it forward. "Don’t stare, bro," JJ paused. "Just warning you, bro. If they corner me, I’m coming out swinging, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah," Pope agreed.
"Slice and dicin’. I’m on edge right now, okay? If that doesn’t work, I got this right here." JJ held up his worn backpack.
Fucking hell, Kiara thought. He brought the gun.
"Yeah, yeah. So, we just gotta stay in the group. They can’t come get us if we’re in the group," Pope remarked.
"Like a school of fish.”
"Stay in the school. Can’t leave the school. Stay in school," Pope repeated to himself.
"I’m sorry JJ…" Kiara interrupted. "Please tell me that you did not bring a gun here. JJ, there are kids."
"No Kie! I didn’t bring the gun. Everything’s fine, okay?" JJ assured, his frantic tone betraying him.
"Oh wow, thank you. That’s really convincing. I love that JJ." Kiara looked from JJ to Pope, trying to assess what kind of trouble they’d caused now. "Founding principle, you guys. No secrets amongst Pogues. What is Rafe talking about?"
Pope leaned it, bringing his face closer to Kiara's. "Kie, it might go down tonight."
"What does that mean?" Their vagueness was making Kiara extra suspicious. "'Might go down tonight.' What did y’all do?"
The boys look at each other, neither of supplying any answers to Kiara's questioning.
"Deny, deny, deny," JJ said quietly to Pope under his breath.
The opening score of The Addams Family cracked through the weathered speakers forcing an end to the conversation. A memory popped into Kiara’s head before she had time to stop it. This was Sarah Cameron’s favorite movie. Sarah used to mouth the lines along with the actors every time they watched it together.
There were a lot of glamorous parts of being best friends with the Kook-queen Sarah Cameron. When they walked down the shiny hallways of the Kook Academy literally arm-in-arm peoples' heads turned and watched them go by. All the mean girls with their once snarky remarks were suddenly complimenting Kiara's "unique style," begging her to tell them where she bought her clothes. (In truth, most of it was actaully thrifted since that was much more eco-friendly.) Plus there was the way Sarah swiped her Daddy's black card without a second thought. Kiara’s family lived on Figure Eight, they were a part of the Island Club but they would never have the kind of east coast old money the Cameron's had.
It wasn’t something Kiara usually minded. The whole money thing. Kiara never saw herself as less than because she didn’t wear a watch that cost as much as college tuition on her wrist. But it was more than that: Kiara never really saw herself as much of a Kook to begin. She didn’t want that lifestyle. She never had. It was her parents who pushed it on her. Her mom had grown up under the crystal chandeliers and ever-watchful eyes. She’d debuted into Outer Banks high society at the age of seventeen like every Kook at that age still did. An action which Kiara scoffed at. Her mom was fully prepared to be another success story of the ring-before-spring pipeline, returning to the Outer Banks after four years of college with an MRS degree and a husband who would be balding by his early forties.
But in a Hollywood-worthy meet-cute that involved one drunk sorority girl and her vodka-induced need for pancakes, Mike Carrera stumbled into Anna's life.
Mike Carrera was the opposite of Anna in every way that counted. His whole life had been hard work and grit, fighting for the things that were rightfully his and taking them when people still refused to hand them over. He had a pipe dream of owning his own restaurant, a borderline fantasy that he was dead-set on making sure came true. Anna loved him and he loved her right back. They eloped to Vegas the week after graduation even though own Anna’s mother was halfway through planning the wedding. They bought cheap rings and a second-hand dress since they were still living paycheck to paycheck. Though the bright lights of Vegas had made the impromptu wedding seem a bit more glamorous than it really was, they both knew deep down their love was the real thing. They promised each other till death do us part and meant it.
When Anna found out she was pregnant, she talked Mike into going back to the Outer Bank. Anna swore up and down the move was only so her parents could help with the baby. They'd live on the cut, work for what they deserved and be happy. Then Anna's parents bought them a house on Figure Eight as a wedding gift and Sunday dinners at the Island club became protocol. Anna slipped back into her life as a Kook and brought Mike with her. When the restaurant turned into the tourist hot spot, the zeros in their bank accounts started growing. The Carrera's got rich but their money could never compete with the trust-fond generational wealth of their fellow Kooks.
The Outer Banks only had one elementary school. All the kids on the island were thrown together at an age where no one yet realized the lines between the haves and have nots. Fifth grade was when it got messy. Every fall the class size heading to the Kildare County Middle School dropped by half when all the Kooks transferred to St. Andrews “Kook” Academy. A breeding ground for Ivy-league-bound eighteen-year-olds who lived with the cushions of their parents' bank accounts.
Kiara begged her parents not to make her go to the Kook Academy. She would have rather died than leave her best friends, Bea and Joey, who were both Pogues and staying at KDMS. She didn't realize that middle school would rip the three of them apart. By eighth grade, Kiara had her new friends. Pope Heyward, John B. and JJ Maybank, but he still went by Junior back then. Even if they were bothered by Kiara's status as half-Kook, in the same way Bea and Joey had been, they never showed it.
Mike and Anna didn't see the need to send Kiara to St. Andrews if she didn't want to go but as high school inched closed with every year, the whispers about the Kook in public school grew louder. The summer before freshman year, her parents offered her a deal - though it was hardly a fair one in Kiara's mind. She could either stay at Kildare County High School but she'd have to work in the restaurant in her free time or she could go to St. Andrews with complete freedom for a year. Kiara knew her parents wanted her to transfer so she caved and agreed to a year at St. Andrews to make them happy. Anna prayed her daughter would find her people at St. Andrews and that one year would turn into four but Kiara knew she had already found her people and was counting down the days till she could go back to them. It was only when Sarah Cameron decided the new girl might be cool that Kiara stopped marking each passing day with a big red x.
-
There was less than a week left in their Christmas break and Kiara was seated across from Sarah at the Cameron's dining room table bent over her practice problems for Mr. Harrings' freshman science. He infamously gave out the hardest pop quiz of the year the first day back after break and Kiara's grade couldn't take her failing it.
"What’s avocado’s number?” Sarah asked, looking up from her paper, her pen frozen in midair.
“What’s what?” said Kiara, thoroughly confused at Sarah’s question.
“You know,” Sarah paused, scanning Kiara’s face for any sign of understanding. “Avogadro’s number. Some kid in my class thought the dude’s name was avocado so we’ve been calling it avocado’s number since.”
“Ah, Avogadro’s number,” Kiara repeated, shifting her papers around until she found the one with all the formulas and constants written on it. “Six point zero two two one four zero seven six times ten to the twenty-second power.”
Sarah punched the numbers into her calculator. “Thanks, babes.”
“Of course.”
Rafe’s heavy footsteps carried through the Cameron’s massive house announcing his arrival home. He strolled into the room, a thick stack of papers in one hand and a garment bag draped over the opposite arm.
“Hey loser,” Sarah said, not inspired enough by her brother's presence to look up from her work.
“Hi Rafe,” Kiara echoed. "Where you been?"
"Being Ward's errand boy. I forgot the key to his office where I was supposed to drop off this contract so he's gonna kill me for that. But," Rafe paused digging into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet pouch. "Merry late Christmas," he finished, handing the bag to Kie. "I saw it and I thought you'd like it."
Kiara reached into the pouch pulling out a small enamel pin of the earth, shaped into a heart with the word "love" in silver written over it. Kie smoothed her thumb over the cold metal.
"You know since you're gonna save the planet and everything," Rafe added.
"Thank you. I love it!" Kiara jumped up from her chair, throwing her arms around his waist wrapping him a hug.
"No problem, Kie." Rafe said.
"Hey, I'm trying to save our planet too." Sarah pipped up.
"Shut up, Sarah," Rafe cracked. "I gave you your Christmas present last week."
Sarah stuck her tongue out at him, Rafe doing the same in return.
"What are you guys working on?" Rafe asked.
"Science," Kiara replied, reaching down to grab her backpack from underneath the table.
"Is that for Mr. Harrings' class?"
"Yeah. Yeah, it is," Kie said, half distracting by trying to decide which spot to put her new pin in.
"I think I might still have my old test from that class if you want them.”
Sarah's head snapped up at the offer. "No way."
"Sound any more surprised, Sarah. I was offering them to Kiara anyway, snob," Rafe shot back.
"I'll share," Kie assured her best friend.
Kiara followed Rafe up the grand staircase, flopping on Rafe's bed while he searched for his old work.
"Henry Spiegel was talking about taking you to a he formal in the locker room before we left for break," Rade relied from inside his closet.
"Isn't he the freshman who made varsity lacrosse?" Kiara asked back. She contemplated the idea of going to St. Andrews' Winter Formal with him. Henry was nice enough, plus he was pretty good-looking. She could stand going with him.
"I told him if I found out he'd asked you, I'd make sure he missed the next three games because of a black eye."
"Rafe."
"What? Do you really think I'm gonna let some dweeb with half a brain who only wants to get in your pants take my little sisters to formal?"
"Who am I supposed to take?” She shot back.
“I don’t know. Not him,” Rafe said, emerging, a small stack of papers in hand.
“You know Denny asked Sarah last week.”
“I know.”
Kiara paused, “You will you take?”
Rafe shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. Maybe Ashely M. Seniors don’t really go to the actual dance.”
Kie took the pages of old test for Rafe’s outstretched arm and riffled through them. His name was scribbled on the top of each one in his messy handwriting.
Her eyes drifted up to the Duke basketball poster in the corner of Rafe’s room.
“When do you hear from them?” Kie asked.
“March,” said Rafe, his voice void of emotion.
“I know you’ll get in.”
"My dad'll make sure of it.” Rafe sat down on the bed next to Kiara.
“You don’t know that.”
“I found a card addressed to Ward from the Dean of Student last week thanking him for 'the generous donation from such a valued alumni.'”
Kie's head dropped to rest on Rafe’s shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, well he’s a dick.” Rafe’s phone buzzed and he pulled it out of his pocket, reading the text on the screen. “I gotta go. I told the boys we’d go hit at the Club tonight.”
“Thanks again for these.” Kie held up the papers. “And for the pin," she added.
“Mr. Harrings always includes the names of the scientists from the unit as bonus questions. Don’t forget to look those up,” Rafe said as he stood up from the bed. "See you around, Kie." He placed a small protective kiss on her forehead before he headed back downstairs.

"JJ?" Pope slapped JJ's shin to get his attention.
"What?" JJ whispered back over the sounds of the movie.
"I gotta take a piss.”
"Hold it."
"I can’t hold it. I drank too much soda."
"It’s too exposed. They’ll totally see us."
"I gotta go," Pope pleaded. He peered behind him to see Rafe, Topper, and Kelce still parked in the same spots at the back of the crowd. "They’re blocking the bathrooms," Pope added.
JJ looked around, thinking up a Plan B. "Alright. Come here. I know where.”
"Hey, where y’all going?" Kiara asked, turning her attention away from the movie.
"We gotta wring it out," JJ responded deadpan.
"What? You gonna hold it for each other," Kiara questioned, disgusted at the thought.
JJ shrugged off the comment and lead Pope through the crowd, the two of them ducking behind a large oak tree.
Kiara turned back to the movie playing on the giant screen, leaving the boys to their own devices. Besides, they wouldn't dare start something with all the people around. They were idiots but they knew better than that.
"Crap," Kiara cursed under her breath when Rafe trailed by Topper and Kelce brushed by her, heading in the same direction Pope and JJ had went. She watched their figures disappear behind the screen before she jumped up from her seat.
JJ's gun, the thought flew her mind.
She picked up his backpack with no intention to use it but better safe than sorry. Especially when it came to those Kooks in particular.
"Hey, kick his ass, Top!" Kiara heard Rafe yell as she rounded the corner.
Kiara felt a full-fledged panic run through her body as she took in the sight. Kelce had pinned JJ's arm behind his back and was Rafe pounded his fist into JJ’s face. A foot away, Pope was barely holding off Topper. Whatever Pope and JJ had done had obviously crossed a line.
Kiara ran in without another thought, swinging JJ's backpack in front of her. "Let go of him, Topper! Fascist asshole!" She screamed at him.
Topper grabbed the bag from her, ripping it out of Kiara's hand and throwing it aside. Kiara jumped on Topper's back, desperate to distract him.
"Hey listen, Pope," Topper yelled over the sounds of the movie. "All you gotta do is accept a little personal responsibility."
"Screw you, kook," Pope spit back.
Kiara felt arms wrap around her waist, yanking her off of Topper. The too-familiar scents of Rafe's cologne filled her nose and his breath was hot on her cheek.
She kicked her legs struggling against him, "Let go of me, Rafe."
"Stay out of this, Kiara," he warned, tossing her onto the ground. His gaze fixed on her for a second before turning away. Kiara swore she saw a look of guilt flash across Rafe's face, wordlessly apologizing for tossing her away so harshly but she didn’t have time to think about that while her boys were still in trouble.
"Kie! You okay?" Pope yelled, struggling against Topper who had wrapped his arm around Pope's neck.
"Come on, man. Just admit it," Topper shouted. "Admit you did it, bitch!"
JJ's backpack had conveniently landed close to where Kiara lay. She rolled over, pushing herself onto her knees and crawling over to the backpack. She riffled through it, her hand landing on the cold mental of the gun.
"You don't mess with me, Pogue! You hear me?" Topper continued. Kiara looked up at Topper's face which showed no signs of mercy. Meanwhile, Rafe's fist smashed into JJ's face again and again. The situation was getting worse by the second. “I'm gonna give you one chance. One chance, Pope. One chance. Come on! One!"
Kiara dropped the gun back into the backpack pulling out JJ's lighter instead, two Js craved onto the surface. She had to go big to stop Rafe, Topper and Kelce. Kiara crawled over to the edge of the sheet the movie was being projected off. Fuck, this has to work.
"Finish him off, Top!" Rafe directed.
Kie flicked on the lighter, the wind blowing out the flame the first few times. Her hands were shaking as she grabbed the edge of the sheet and held the blue flame up to it. The fire lit up her face as it took hold, spreading faster than she had expected. The crowd yelped, scrambling away as the orange flames climbed toward the sky.
"Guys! Fire!" Rafe yelled, taking in the sight.
"Get off of him!" Kie pushed Topper away from Pope who fell to the ground gasping for air. "Kelce, let go of JJ!"
"Let's get out of here," Rafe started, fleeing the scene. The other Kooks not far behind him.
"You good?" Kiara asked Pope helping him off the ground. "We're okay." She assured. Her heart was racing, her hands still shaking.
"You're a freakin' idiot," Pope responded.
"I saved your ass. Come on." Kiara threw her arm around Pope's shoulder, leading him away.
The sounds of the film continued to echo over the speakers as the sheet burned to ash behind them.
-
Kiara sat slumped against the wall of the St. Andrews hallway that lead into the cafeteria. The frill of her $200 dress fanned out around her. The dress, in her opinion, had been a colossal waste of money but had Sarah actually squealed when Kiara walked out of the fitting room in it. Kiara had tugged at the awkward way the skirt st on her hips but Sarah wouldn’t shut up about how perfectly the blue color fit the Winter Wonderland theme so Kiara bought it. Now, the sequins itching against her collarbone were just annoying her and Kiara couldn’t help scratching at them, making the already red marks on her skin even angrier. She was so fucked. Denny had pulled out a flash during pictures and somehow it kept ending up in Kiara's hands. The whole dance thing had Kiara incredibly anxious so she kept taking sips of the flash to keep her self busy. First during pictures, then during dinner, and in the limo on the way to the school. Now the flask was lying empty on the floor next to her and her nerves were no less settled.
She longed for her pogues so much the pain of missing them made her stomach hurt. Well, that or the alcohol. At that moment, she would have given anything to be back with them. Back with Pope and his overly nervous tendencies, back with John B. and his ideas that usually lead them into trouble, back with JJ and his flirtatious banter that left her blushing a lot more than she cared to admit. They were her family, where she belonged. Not in the gated communities of Figure Eight with mansions so big they had rooms no one entered for weeks. This whole year had been a mistake. She couldn't stand the fakeness of everybody and everything that came as a side effect to bank accounts with the kind of zeros that could seriously help if the 1% gave up being so selfish. Even Sarah's save-the-sea-turtles-with-men façade was fading away revealing another rich kid who didn’t give a shit about who she hurt.
The doors of the cafeteria swung open, the bass of the DJ's music filling the previously silent hallway. Kiara looked up to find Rafe jogging down the hall to her.
"What are you doing out here?" He asked, sliding down the way to sit next to her.
"The room kept spinning and...uh...I thought I might throw up so I went to find a bathroom," Kiara answered.
"You know the bathrooms are on the other side of the school?"
Kiara giggled which turned into a little burb which made her giggle even more.
"Jesus, Kiara. How drunk are you?" Rafe picked up the flask from the ground. He could smell the alcohol on her breath without even getting closer over. “Who's is this?"
Kiara paused for a moment, trying to remember. "Denny's."
"Sarah's date, Denny?"
Kiara nodded her head.
"Fuck," Rafe muttered. "Okay, let's get you out of here before any of the chaperons see and write you up." He stood up and held out both hands to held Kiara to her feet too.
Kiara pulled herself, leaning against Rafe for stability. The doors swung open again and Rafe's date marched into the hallway.
"Ugh, thank God. There you are. This dance is so lame. C'mon, we're all going to Joey's."
"I'm not coming. I have to take my sister home. She's totally trashed."
The girl's eyes moved over Rafe's face, landing on Kiara. "No," she corrected. "You're my date. You have to come with me."
"Did you not just hear me? I'm taking my sister home," Rafe replied.
"Are you kidding me? She's not even your real sister. She's hardly even a real Kook. I bet she's just using Sarah and you for your family's money. Just look at her dress. It's the same one every other wannabe trying-to-hard freshman has on. Pathetic."
Rafe pulled Kiara closer into him, wrapping an arm around her shoulder protectively. "You can fucking leave," Rafe spit back. "I don't wanna hear you ever talk about my family like that again."
The girl rolled her eyes. "Whatever. I was gonna hook up with Brandan tonight anyway. He's way hotter than you." She spun on her, stalking off in the same direction she had come.
Kiara looked up at Rafe, her bottom lip shaking as tears welled in her eyes. "Are you mad at me?" She asked.
Rafe laughed. "Of course not, Kie. Ashley can go fuck herself. Or she can go fuck Brandan. I don't really care." He wiped away the tear that had slide down Kiara's cheek. "Let's go find Sarah so I can take you both home."
-
Sarah was sitting on her date's lap back inside the cafeteria turned South Pole for the night, laughing loud enough at Denny’s shitty jokes that it was throughly annoying everyone around her.
"Get up Sarah," Rafe commanded.
Sarah surprised at Rafe's sudden presence scrambled off her date's lap. Rafe reached down and grabbed a fistful of Denny's shirt. He cocked his arm back and swung his fist straight into Denny's nose which gave a definitive crack on impact. Sarah let out a gasp and rushed forward.
"What the fuck?" She screamed at Rafe, shoving him off her date.
"You're date's an ass. Kie's completed wasted thanks to him" he said to Sarah. "Let's go. I'm taking you both home."
Sarah glanced at Kiara, who was standing slightly behind Rafe feeling both embarrassed at how much she had drank and grateful for Rafe's protectiveness.
"But I wanna go to the afterparty," Sarah protested. "She has you." Sarah's eyes locked with Kiara and Kiara's heart sank. She could tell her "best friend" wasn't about to give up the rest of her night just because she was nervous and had drunk too much.
Kiara shifted awkwardly on her feet. Sarah could have a least pretended to be conflicted, considered missing the party for a second. God, Kiara missed the unwavering faithfulness of her pogues.
Kiara tugged on Rafe's hand and he glanced over his shoulder at her. "It's fine," she slurred. She really needed out of this itchy disaster of dress as soon as possible.
"You're a really great friend," Rafe said to Sarah.
"Whatever," Sarah replied, her voice almost mimicking the way Rafe's date had said the same words. "Let's go find some ice for your nose, Denny."
-
They had found the gold. It was fifty feet down a well under an ax-murders house no less but they'd fucking found it. John B's crazy plan had worked and all they needed to do was get the gold out, a job which had effectively been delegated to Pope. Of course, first they had to wait for John B to get back from his fishing trip with Ward Cameron, some twisted form of pseudo father-son bonding. What was it with men and finishing? Couldn’t they pick a sport that didn’t actively destroy the environment?
Pope sat atop the kitchen counter, a pencil tucked behind his ear, his mouth moving as he made silent calculations. JJ stood in the doorway of the chateau, dripping water from the hot tub onto the floor. Kiara had thrown off the couch cushions and was rifling through the desk draws, slamming each one with frustration when they didn't hold what she was looking for. Kiara noticed this morning that a pin was missing from her backpack. It didn’t seem like a big deal but with every passing second her panic escalated.
“What are you looking for, bro? I swear this house is like one of those Where’s Waldo? books.” JJ asked Kiara.
“Did you just make a reference to a book, JJ?” Pope chimed in from across the room.
“Just because I chose not to read, doesn’t mean I can’t Pope,” JJ replied.
“Both of you are idiots. It’s a picture book anyway, you don't read it. Can you help me find my pin, please? It's the one I've always had on my backpack. The earth, shaped like a heart," Kie explained.
"Right," Pope replied, sliding off the counter where he was sitting. “Why do you care about it so much anyway?”
“It was a gift."
“From who?”
“From someone at the Kook Academy.”
“Sarah?”
“No.”
“You had other friends there?” JJ mocked.
Kie hesitated. “Fine, it was actually from Rafe as a Christmas present.”
JJ and Pope automatically stopped and looked up at each other.
“Bro, please tell me this isn’t the same Rafe who almost beat Pope’s face in last week."
“It’s not about Rafe. It’s about the pin,” Kie said.
“That’s from Rafe,” Pope finished.
“You guys weren’t there. You don’t get it. Whatever," she huffed. “Don’t help me find it then.”
“No, please Kie. Enlighten us," the sarcasm dripped off JJ's voice.
“I said you don’t have to help,” Kie repeated.
“Hey Kiara,” Pope said, grabbing her wrist. He was always the first to tell when something was off with her.
Kiara shrugged him off, wiping away her tears with her tshirt hem before the other pogues saw them.
“There was just this time,” she started, still overturning books like the pin might have been under there. “At a dance. This senior called me a fake Kook. She said my dress looked tacky like I was trying way too hard to fit but I would never fit in because I’d always be a fucking Pogue. Which of course I don’t wanna be a Kook, I was just playing dress-up for the year to please my parents and it’s like she saw straight through. Rafe was there. Like an older brother. Told her to go fuck herself. That if she ever talked about me like that again, he’d tell the whole she had an std.” Kie paused to wipe her runny nose. “He was basically my family so when Sarah dropped me like I was nothing I was sure that meant Rafe didn’t think I was worth his time anymore too. I never reached out to him again and now he just looks at me the same way he looks at every other Pogue.”
Pope cleared his throat, clearly mildly uncomfortable with Kiara’s sudden expression of emotion. It was an almost unspoken rule among the four of them that they didn’t talk about Kie’s kook year. It had sucked, bottom line. She’d shown back up the summer after ninth grade and it was the four of them again just like middle school. No one had the guts to ask about anything that had happened that year so it never got brought up.
JJ couldn't stop himself from remembering what Rafe had said at Midsummers. Tell Kiara she looks pretty hot for a Pogue. Fucking jackass. If he'd been like a brother to Kie, of course he'd know just how to hit her where it hurt.
JJ clinched his fist, wishing security hadn't pulled him away before he'd gotten a chance to swing at Rafe that night. “I still hate him,” JJ announced. “The entire Cameron family thinks they're the shit because they eat from golden spoons or something."
"The expression is born with a silver spoon in their mouth but JJ's right. All Kook’s suck," Pope added.
-
Rafe had wrestled off Kiara's heels after she almost face-planted in the school parking lot on the way to Rafe's truck thanks to them. He'd gotten up her all the back to the Cameron's house and in the front door successfully without her throwing up. Rafe tried to get Kiara to walk up the stairs but she'd sat down on the bottom declaring she would just sleep there so Rafe had delicately thrown her over his shoulder and didn't put her down until he dropped her on Sarah's bed.
Kiara closed her eye instantly and hummed softly, pleased with the comfortable spot she'd landed.
"No sleeping yet. You gotta drink some water first. Hold on."
Rafe dashed across the hall to his own room and grabbed the bottle of ibuprofen from his bathroom for Kiara in the morning. He also snatched the half-drunk water off his nightstand. It wasn't the best option but it was something.
"Okay, okay. Sit up," he said to Kiara, setting the water and medicine down on the bedside table.
Kiara grumbled but pushed herself upright until her back was against the headboard.
"I'm so happy you're my big bro," she said, reaching out her hand to tousle Rafe's hair. "It's always just been my mom and dad and me. And my turtle, Leo, before I lost him." Kiara felt tears wetting her cheeks again at the thought of her lost pet. "I just thought he might wanna play in the yard but then he ran off." The crying made Kiara hiccup which made her cry even more. "He ran off, Rafe. Turles aren't supposed to be fast.”
Rafe couldn't stop himself from laughing. "I didn't peg you as a sad drunk," he said, putting a hand on Kiara's shoulder to calm her down. "It's okay, Kie. I'm sure Leo is just fine."
Her sniffles stopped momentarily and she looked up at Rafe through her tear-soaked eyelashes. “You know no one ever called me Kie before you did. Now everyone does."
Rafe chuckled. "Alright, drink some water and you can sleep."
Kiara accepted the water bottle and pressed it to her lips, taking a swig. "You promise you're not mad at me? About Ashely and the dance?"
"I promise, Kie. I'd much rather make you sure you're okay."
"You're getting soft, Rafe," Kiara teased as she snuggled herself under the sheets.
"Never," he replied, reaching over and clicking off the lamp on the bedside table before he stood up. "Hollar if you think you're gonna throw up."
"Never," Kie repeated, giggling to herself as Rafe left the room, pulling the door closed behind him.

John B's face was plastered on wanted posters up and down the island. The entire county was looking for him, desperate to be the first to claim the twenty-five thousand dollar reward. The wholesome treasure hunt John B. has advertised to the Pogues at the beginning of the summer had gone way south, like equator-level south. None of them had eaten a decent meals in days, much less slept more than few hours. The whole thing was taking its toll but the stacks were too high for them to slip up now. They all knew the odds. John B's word would never stand against Ward's. They had to get him off the island.
JJ and Kiara pulled up the boatyard, the keys to the Phantom clutched so tightly in JJ's palm that they left little indentions. He'd emerged from his house, his jaw set and only held up the keys in response to Kiara asking how it went so she decided not to push him on it.
JJ shoved open the rusty metal door of the garage. "There she be. Hey, girl," he remarked. "1983 formula four-oh-two SR1." JJ pulled the sheet covering the boat off, the sunlight streaming in through the windows making the dust lingering in the air visible. "The Phantom," JJ announced proudly.
"Mmhm," Kie hummed.
"First boat to make the run to Bermuda in under sixteen hours, Kie," JJ paused. "Forty years old! Forty. And it's still the fastest thing that Kildare's ever seen."
"It's kind of a junker."
"Really?" JJ turned to her. "She's right there, Kie. She can hear you. Let's just put it this way. You would not be smokin' weed right now if she never existed, okay?"
"I just hope it runs," Kie replied.
"Oh, no, she'll run alright. She's faster than any of the cutters the boy in blue got."
The sounds of motorcycle engines roared from outside the garage.
"Pope. Finally," Kie exclaimed, jogging to meet him. Hopefully, the Outer Banks sun had burned off any weirdness still lingering from this morning, she prayed.
Rafe appeared from behind the boat and Kiara stopped suddenly, not expecting the sight of him.
"Hey, there. What's goin' on? JJ?" Rafe said and JJ also froze at the sound of the eldest Cameron's voice. "How you guys doin'?”
Barry whistled, announcing his own arrival. "Well, well...." The sounds of a gun cocking send the blood rushing to Kie's ears. JJ raised his hands in the air, backing up as Barry pushed the gun to his chest. "See, don't think I forgot about me and you on the side of the road. I'm here because I want my motheruckin' money."
Barry grabbed the side of JJ's face, shoving him to the ground. "JJ! JJ!" Kie screamed as Rafe pulled her back from the scene. "Rafe!" Kiara struggled against Rafe’s taller and stronger physique.
"That's what I'm here for, ain't it," Barry shouted lifting JJ's head up by his hair.
"It's not you we want, Kie. Alright, Where's John B?" Rafe asked.
"I don't know," she screamed back, her hand slapping Rafe's face on instinct.
"I really wish you didn't do that.”
"Look, I know what you did.” Kie’s voice wavered.
"What? What'd I do?" Rafe's face inched closer to hers.
"You murdered Peterkin."
Rafe's hand flew up to Kiara's throat, wrapping his fingers tight around it. Kiara's mouth fell open in a silent scream as she clawed at his hand. "Don't you ever say those fucking words again," Rafe warned.
"Rafe," Kiara pleaded. Eighteen months later and Kiara could tell Rafe didn’t have a single ounce of warmth left for her. The Rafe that had protected her from handsy freshman boys and made her drink water so her hangover wasn't as bad, the Rafe that had once held a deep sibling-like affection for her was gone, replaced by someone with pure blinding disdain for pogues of any kind.
"Understood? Do you understand? Where's John B? Where's John B?" Rafe asked again, his tone growing impatient
"I don't know," Kie yelled. Rafe’s hand was growing tighter around her throat with every word, forcing tears to her eyes. Fuck this. Rafe Cameron wasn’t about to be the thing that killed her. This rich, white asshole couldn’t get away with two murders.
"Where's John B? Huh?"
"I don't know! I don't know!"
Rafe's hand fell away from her throat suddenly. "Don't touch her," Kiara heard Pope screamed, his voice full of rage as he swung a metal pole into Rafe's back. The look on his face was something Kiara had never seen before from Pope. It sent a chill down her spine.
"Hey!" Barry yelled as he attempted to throw his gun to Rafe but it landed on the ground a few feet short.
"Kie! Kick it!" JJ hollered and the gun disappeared under the boat out of reach.
JJ picked up Barry slamming him into the boat. Pope's fist continued to connect with Rafe’s face. Again and again. Crap, he wasn’t stopping.
"Pope," Kie said. "Okay, Pope. Pope! Pope, that's good! Stop!"
JJ, having thrown Barry aside, moved to pull Pope off Rafe. "Hey, Pope! He's had enough, dude."
"He's good." Kie pleaded as Pope reached for a piece of plastic tubing, pulling it tight around Rafe's neck.
"Snap out of it, man. Snap out of it, dude!" JJ said.
"Pope!" Kie yelled again. "Pope, that's too much!"
"Stop, dude," JJ added. "Dude, cmon! Stop! Stop, dude!"
"Pope! Get off!" Kie desperately tried to make eye contact with him
"Let go! Come on!"
"Look at me!" Kie screamed in one final attempt to stop Pope from going to far. Rafe's face was already turning a concerning shade of red. If Pope crossed this line, Kiara feared there would be no coming back. She already had one fugitive to deal with, she didn’t want another.
Pope dropped the tubing, eyes wide with fear.
"Shit. Oh, shit." JJ said.
Rafe coughed from the floor, blood smeared down his chin.
"Okay, we gotta go. We gotta go." Kiara announced, hustling back the car. They had to get the boat ready for John B. They had to get him off the island. Her Pope-like organizational instincts kicked in protecting her from processing anything that had just happened. Letting her forget the look in Rafe’s eyes as his hand closed around her throat. Three o’clock at the dump. They had to stay on schedule. Three o’clock. Three o’clock. Three o’clock.

The single yellow heart Sarah had responded to Kiara's ‘Happy Birthday!’ text with stared back at her mockingly. She closed out of her messages, opening Instagram instead. Story after story showed the party she hadn't been invited to. A shaky video of everyone singing to Sarah, her face lit up by the glow of the candles. A bathroom selfie of all the girls who Kiara had through became her closest friends, their faces flushed red with joy. She clicked the side button of her iphone making the screen going black. Kiara couldn't stand to look at it all happening for another minute. She flopped backward on her bed opting to stare at the plain, white ceilings of her bedroom instead.
She should have been, standing by Sarah's side, smiling along with everyone in a tipsy haze of happiness, not watching it happen via Instagram. Kiara knew she wasn't doing anything productive by throwing herself a pity party but God, she was pissed. She wanted Sarah to know it too. She picked up her phone from where she'd dropped it next to her on the comforter.
The line rang twice before a voice answered the call.
“Kildare County Police, what’s the emergency?”
Kiara hesitated. Sarah was sure to figure out it was her who had ratted on the party and that would be social suicide enough. But Sarah really had brought this on herself. She should have invited to Kie to her fucking birthday.
“Hello? Anyone there?” The operator asked.
Kiara brought the phone back up to her ear. “Hi, I’d like to file a noise complaint, please. Two six six St. Margaret Street.”
“Yes, the Cameron’s house,” Kiara confirmed, wiping at her tear-stained cheeks and steading her voice as she relied the rest of the information to the operator.
Happy birthday to you, Sarah Cameron.

Hold My Hand: John Wick x Reader Chapter 79
Tumblr media
warnings: none hold my hand masterlist
You’ve spent the whole morning and afternoon preparing for Jimmy and Tess, and John had even ran to the store to get more groceries since it won’t just be the two of you eating. He got several things that you asked him to since you know Tess has certain things that she likes. She prefers water from a bottle. She likes a certain brand of bread, and she’s very picky on what kind of pickles she eats as well. She’s pregnant, so you’ll let it slide.
Sadie was beyond excited to see Jimmy and Tess, and she did exactly what you thought she’d do: pissed on the floor. Thankfully you had her in the backyard so it was just on the cement. Bleu was excited to see Jimmy and Tess as well, and Garfield was purring so loud that you could hear him from across the room. Tess and Jimmy both gave them lots of love, and they looked so happy to finally see them again.
Jimmy and John are now across the street looking at the damage in the basement, and Jimmy insisted that Tess stay at your house and that he’d take pictures for her to see it. He didn’t want her anywhere near the mold.
The kitchen smells so good since you put a pot roast in the crock-pot before you left to get Tess and Jimmy, and now with Tess’ help, you’re getting everything ready for dinner. The two of you are laughing hysterically as she tells you all about the shenanigans that Jimmy got himself into, and it feels so good to have her around again. You missed her so much, and you kinda hope the two of you never spend that long apart again.
Just as you start to set the table, you hear John and Jimmy coming in the front door, which you’re thankful for since your stomach is growling. John and Jimmy both wash their hands, and you lean up to peck John quickly as you finish getting out the silverware and plates.
“I don’t even get one. That’s unfair.” Jimmy teases, then he smiles when you peck him on the cheek. “Uh oh, Tess. I think your sister is trying to make a move.”
You notice the big bandage on Jimmy’s arm, and you point at it, “What’s that?”
Tess turns around a little and laughs, “Oh, go ahead, Jimmy. Tell them about your big hero moment.”
“I was a hero, Tess.” Jimmy says, flicking her shoulder a little, “Well, as we all know, Tess is allergic to bees. She was laying out by the pool when a big wasp landed on the table next to her. Me, being the hero that I am, I tried to get it to fly away.”
Tess laughs, “And in the process, you…”
Jimmy looks at you and starts to laugh, “In the process, I tripped over a chair and cut my arm on this little metal piece sticking out.”
You wince, “Oh, ouch. You got it all cleaned out though, right?”
“Yeah, yeah, we did.” he nods and pats Tess’ ass, “My little nurse.”
You jokingly gag and walk over to the table, then you sit down as everyone starts to dig into the food. Jimmy takes a big bite of the pot roast and sits back in his chair with a huge smile on his face.
“That means he likes it.” Tess laughs, and Jimmy gives you a thumbs up. Tess looks down at her plate, picking at her food, and she smiles when she looks up at you, “Thank you for letting us stay here.”
“Of course. You’d do the same for us.” you say, nudging her shoulder, “Eat your food. Don’t be all…timid and shy because you’re staying with us.”
“We just don’t want to impose.”
“Tess, listen to me, you’re not imposing. We’re not going to make you stay at a hotel when we’re right here. While you’re here, this is your home. Don’t be afraid to go in any room that you want. Nothing is off limits, we don’t have anything to hide.”
John laughs, “Just don’t go in my drawer next to my bed.”
You and Tess both look at John, and you cock up your eyebrow a little as he laughs.
“You know…like in shows when the parents say not to go in the bedside table. You know what? Never mind.”
Tess laughs when you shake your head, “Got some weird sex stuff in there, don’t ya?”
“No, we do not.” you say to Tess, then you look at John and shake your head again, “He’s just being a dork today.”
Tess laughs, then she looks over at Jimmy, “We have some news.”
You gasp quietly and look over at her, propping your head up and waiting for her to continue.
“So, while we were in Italy, Jimmy and I were talking about our hopes and dreams. I told Jimmy that it was always a dream of mine to be a mom, and that with my parents passing when I was young, I want to be as involved with my children as I can be.” she says, and you nod your head as she begins to smile, “Jimmy told me his dream that he’s always had. Go ahead, babe, tell them.”
Jimmy clears his throat and sits up, “Well, John already knows since we just talked about this a little bit ago, but…I’ve always wanted to start my own carpentry business. I love building stuff, it’s one of my favorite things to do.”
“Really?” you smile as you look at him, and he nods his head.
“Yeah, I just…” Jimmy swallows hard and sighs, “Being a cop was more for my parents than for me in the first place, and with Finn on the way, I can’t put myself at risk anymore. Watching John buy the shop inspired me to really think about what I do to do with my life. And I want to start a business. I want to be able to be there for Finn and Tess, and I can’t do that if I’m always on call for something.”
“Jimmy, that’s amazing!” you get up from the table and hug him, then you wrap your arms around Tess before you sit back down, “When do you plan on doing this?”
Jimmy takes a deep breath and looks up John, then at you, “Well, once Finn is born, I’ll have a few weeks off, and I plan on starting to hunt for a place somewhere in Oyster Bay. With John’s help.”
John reaches for your hand and smiles when you look at him, “We’re gonna help them out. A loan to help Jimmy get started, and anything else he’ll need.”
“Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less.” you squeeze John’s hand and smile at him -- he really is the perfect man. You look back at Jimmy and Tess, and you let out a small laugh, “Tess got her wish after all; she wanted you to quit your job.”
“Well,” Jimmy leans over and kisses Tess’ cheek, “What Tess wants, she gets.”
Tess takes a big bite of her food, all while looking particularly pleased with herself.
“This is great, by the way.” John says, pointing at his plate. He reaches out for your hand and presses a kiss to the back of it, “Your food lately has been amazing.”
“I’ve cooked twice, maybe three times since we’ve been home.” you laugh, shaking your head, “Calm down, Wick.”
Tess rests her chin on her hand and looks at you, “So, how was your trip?”
“It was so good. We definitely have to go to the tree house sometime. Even if you and I just go on a girls trip or something.” you sit back in your chair a little and feel John’s hand on your thigh, “John and I had so much fun with Shiloh, and Gia and Christina were so nice to us. We swam, we went for a little walk down around their little orchard and picked apples and stuff. We went horseback riding! It was just amazing. I’ll definitely remember that trip for the rest of my life.”
Tess smiles, “I see John is wearing his ring.”
John happily holds up his hand as he chews his food, then he covers his mouth when he talks, “Every day.”
“Wait…” Jimmy furrows his brow, “You eloped?”
“No, no, she just gave me a ring to wear.” John laughs, and his cheeks turn a little pink.
Jimmy nods, stuffing his face with food, “That’s cool. I was offended for a minute thinking you two got married without us.”
Tess rolls her eyes and looks back at you, “Keep going, tell me more. I practically talked your ear off about my trip. It’s your turn.”
“Uh, I don’t know. John and I just kinda chilled out around the tree house. It was so nice there. One day it rained and we ordered some food, opened the windows, and just talked. Actually, wait…” you look at John and smile, “That’s the night we found the conversation starters. We talked about a lot of stuff that night.”
“Oh, my god. Did you like those?”
You nod your head as you look at Tess, and you glance over at John to see a smile on his face, “We loved them, and we never even got through the whole deck, so we’ll definitely do some more. They were so much fun, and we actually learned some things about each other that we didn’t know. John didn’t know that I’m allergic to fish, I didn’t know how many bones John has broken. Spoiler alert: it’s almost all of them.”
Tess laughs, “Of course.”
“While we were there, we also talked about some more serious things like marriage and babies.” you say, watching Tess perk up. “We’ve decided where we want our wedding, who we want there, and we even decided on a date. And as our maid of honor and best man, you two should be the first to know that I will officially become Mrs. Wick on…September 5th.”
“Like…the September 5th that’s coming up soon?”
“That very one.” you smile and look at John, “It’s our one year anniversary too. We want to have a small intimate ceremony on the side patio where you two got married, but I told John that I thought it’d be a cool idea to tear down the tennis court and use that for the reception, then after we can use it for birthday parties and barbecues. So, I think John is going to call someone this week and have them come out and tear down the fence, then John is going to start working on it.”
“Time for Jimmy to get some practice in if he wants his own carpentry business. Gotta see where my money is goin’.” John jokes, and you laugh quietly. “Nah, I really could use your help though.”
Jimmy nods his head, “Of course, man.”
“Ooh, handy men.” Tess teases, then winks at Jimmy.
You smile as you watch John and Jimmy start to talk about the ideas he has for the tennis court, then you look back at Tess, “Oh, and John and I decided that we want to…start trying for a baby. So, I am now birth control free. Well, that’s not true. I just stopped taking it last week.”
“Shut the fuck up!” Tess moves out of her chair a little to hug you, then she sits back down, “Oh, my god!”
“Yeah, we’re really excited. I told John already that I probably won’t get pregnant within these next few months because even though I’m not taking birth control, it’s still in my body and it’s doing its job, but…” you shrug playfully, “We could get pregnant by the end of the year.”
“That’s the plan.” John says, getting up from the table with his plate. “To get this one pregnant by the end of the year.”
You laugh loudly and get up, “Yeah, he’s definitely trying.”
“Oooh,” Tess teases, nudging your arm and wiggling her eyebrows, “Well, we won’t disturb you two when you’re in your room.”
Jimmy is still stuffing his face with potatoes as you, John, and Tess clean up around him, and he sits back in his seat when Tess takes his empty plate.
“Knowing these two, there’s probably dessert.” Tess says, and Jimmy perks up.
You open the fridge and pull out some chocolate mousse in tiny cups, and Jimmy’s mouth drops open in shock.
“I didn’t make these, I bought them.” you laugh and hand him a cup along with a spoon, “Trust me, I’m not Suzy Homemaker. I can make, like two dishes. John and I usually order food every night, so I hope you like Chinese food, Mexican food, and Italian food.”
Jimmy laughs, “Lucky for you, I love all of those things.”
The four of you finish eating your dessert, and Jimmy insists on doing the dishes for you and John. Tess helps him load up the dishwasher, then she takes a break and leans over the counter, yawning loudly.
“Jet lag is the worst. I’m still struggling a bit with mine.” you say, then you lead Tess to their room, “I washed all of your sheets, made sure that you two have enough room for your clothes, I put a basket in the corner for your clothes. You know where the laundry room is obviously, feel free to use it whenever.”
Tess crawls into bed and lays down, “Ah, it feels so good.”
“Oh, this closet is huge.” Jimmy says, and he starts to put his stuff away. He waves it off and crawls in bed next to Tess. “This bed is so comfortable.”
“We’ll let you two catch up on your sleep.” you laugh and look up at John, “We’ll be in our room if you need anything. Oh, and don’t be freaked out if you hear noises in the night, sometimes John just randomly goes for a walk at like 3 AM, and you know me, sometimes I’ll get up for something to drink.”
“Got it.” Tess says, yawning again. “You can leave the door open a little. Garfield comes in every night around 2 and gets in bed with us. And don’t worry about being quiet or anything. This one sleeps like a rock, and since I’ve been pregnant, I knock the fuck out.”
You glare at Tess a little and shake your head, “It’s 7:30. We’re going to lay down and watch a movie.”
Tess puts her hands up in defense and laughs, “Well, you said he’s trying to get you pregnant.”
“Oh, my god. Goodnight, you two.” you laugh and shut the door a little as John laughs.
John puts his hand on your lower back and looks at you, “I’m gonna let the dogs out one last time.”
You pat John’s stomach and smile, “Okay, meet you upstairs.”
Since you have company, you and John can kiss sleeping naked goodbye. Tess will mostly like barge into your room at least once while you and John are still sleeping, and you're not going to take any chances. You’re going to hate sleeping in clothes, but you know that you can probably find something that will keep you a little cooler. You sift through your clothes and grab out several nightgowns that are possibilities.
“Uh,” you laugh and look down at them on the bed, “Well, I mean, I won’t be hot in this.”
You hold up a thin, black lacy nightgown and let out another laugh as you start to undress. Quickly putting it on, you head into the bathroom to wash your face and brush your teeth, then you hear John in the bedroom.
“Oh, I’ll be right back again.”
You catch a glimpse of John as he leaves the room, then you crawl into bed and turn on your fan. You snuggle under the covers when the cool air from the fan hits your skin, and you smile when John walks back in. He holds up a bottle of water, then he places it on the table next to your side of the bed.
You smile, “Thanks, John.”
“Gotta brush my teeth.” he says, then he walks into the bathroom.
A few moments later, John emerges from the bathroom in his boxers and crawls into bed next to you. When he lifts the blanket up, he sees what you’re wearing and immediately scoots closer to kiss you.
“I’m happy that we told Tess and Jimmy that we’re trying to have a baby.”
You smile, “Me, too.”
John brushes his nose against yours as he lingers inches from your mouth, and you feel his hand slowly sliding down your stomach. He leans back in to kiss you, slowly slipping his tongue into your mouth. His spit tastes like mint, and you suck on his tongue to get more of a taste.
He leans down, kissing and sucking on your neck, “So, are we going to watch a movie?”
You laugh a little as you pull him on top of you, “Nope!”
__
The weather has been nice today, but it’s disgustingly hot -- too hot to even go swimming. So instead you’re sitting in the basement watching TV, which wasn’t exactly the plan. You came downstairs to run on the treadmill for a bit since it’s too hot outside, but John is so focused on a book he’s working on, you don’t want to annoy him with the sound of the treadmill. At least that’s what you’re telling yourself.
The floorboards are creaking above your head so you know Tess and Jimmy must be home. They had went over to his parents house for breakfast so they could tell them all about their trip.
You hear a knock on the door, so you hop up quickly and stand at the bottom of the stairs, “Yeah?”
Tess opens the door slowly, then she waves, “Just wanted to tell you that we’re home. Well, I am. Jimmy just went to meet with the guy about the basement.”
“Tess, you can come down here.” you laugh and wave her down, “It’s not off limits.”
“Yes, it is!” John says, and you turn around to look at him as he chuckles like he just told the world’s greatest joke.
Tess has one foot on the step, but she slowly backs her way upstairs, “Oh.”
“He’s kidding, Tess.” you laugh, and she finally starts down the steps again.
She looks around in awe, then she starts making her way around the basement, “I’ve never been down here.”
“Haven’t you?” John asks, still focusing on his book.
Tess rolls her eyes when she sees John has a picture of you and him on his workbench, then she points at his safe, “What’s in there?”
You scoff, “What do you think?”
“Guns.” she whispers, then gasps when you put in the code and open it, “Oh, of course. Pictures of you two.”
You walk over to John and lean against his back as Tess continues to look through John’s safe, and he finally puts his work down to hug you. He turns around in his chair and pulls you in between his legs, then he wraps his arms around you and puts his head on your chest.
“Are you getting hungry?”
You nod, leaning down to kiss his forehead when he looks at you, “Yeah.”
John laughs, “I can hear your stomach growling.”
“Shit.” you let go of John and move Tess out of the way, and you reach into the back of the safe to a small stack of photos that you and John took one night. You tuck them behind your back and smile when Tess looks at you.
“What are those?”
You shrug, “Oh, uh, just some pictures.”
Tess smirks as she walks closer to you, “Pictures of what?”
You shake your head and move behind John for protection, “Just some pictures of John and I together…naked.”
“You’re such a liar.” Tess says, then she yanks a picture out of your hand and her eyes grow wide, “Holy shit!”
You groan loudly and pull it out of her hands, then you turn it around to see it’s a picture of you with John behind you and his hands on your bare breasts. You exhale in relief that it’s not one of the other more…inappropriate pictures.
“You two amaze me.” Tess laughs and turns around to continue looking through the safe. She pulls out the picture of John and Helen, then she turns around to look at John, “This is Helen?”
John nods, “Yeah.”
You walk over to Tess and look at the picture, “Look at John’s cute little smile. He was so happy.”
“John! You look so happy.” Tess says, looking at the picture.
“I was very happy.” he says, and you smile when you look over at him. “Almost as happy as I am now.”
You roll your eyes and laugh, “Reel it in, Wick.”
“That’s probably true though.” Tess says, looking down at John and Helen, “I mean, you’re going to get married and have a baby. John and Helen didn’t have a baby.”
You walk over to John and wrap your arm around his shoulder, “Well, we’re just different. Different circumstances.”
“I applaud you.” Tess says and puts the picture back, “If Jimmy had a wife, I’d always compare myself to her, but he’ll never have anyone better than me, so whatever. I’m the best he’s ever had and will ever have.”
You laugh and look over at John, “I would never say that to John.”
“Well, you should because it’s true! You’re the best John will ever have.” Tess says, then she starts to head upstairs.
John laughs as he looks at you and nods, “She has a point.”
You roll your eyes and look over John’s shoulder to see the book he’s working on. It’s nearly done, and all he has left to do is put his stamp on the inside, which happens to be one of your favorite parts. John grabs the stamp off of the shelf, then he hands it to you and watches as you press it down on the inside cover of the book.
“Little harder, baby.” he laughs, then he puts his hand over yours and presses down, “There.”
“Did you hear my knuckle pop when you did that?” you laugh, leaning against John, “Breakin’ my bones, Mr. Wick.”
John lets out a small laugh, and you turn around a little to look at him. The two of you hold eye contact for a moment, and you give him a sweet smile when his gazes falls to your lips.
“Are you gonna kiss me or are you just looking at my lips?”
He leans forward to kiss you, but you lean back a little to tease him. John frowns and sits back, “Fine, I didn’t want to kiss you anyway.”
“Whoa!” you gasp and point at the floor, “Hell…it’s freezing over. And I think I just saw a pig flying!”
John scoffs and begins to clean up his workbench, all while you cling to his back. You're probably bothering the shit out of him with how clingy you're being, but this is what he signed up for when he proposed to you.
“Am I bothering you, Mr. Moody?”
John stands up straight and pulls your arms around his waist tighter, “No, you’re like my little koala bear.”
You scratch your fingers against John’s stomach, then you lift up his shirt a little and scratch his back. He immediately sits down and leans against the workbench, and he lets out a big groan.
“That feels so good.”
You pull John’s shirt up more and kiss over his back, then you press a kiss to the big scar in the center like always. Pulling his shirt back down, you lean against his back and wrap your arms around him.
“Should we go get some lunch?” you ask, and John nods his head.
You start to head up the stairs when John grabs you by the waist and spins you around. He presses his lips to yours several times, then he sighs and looks at you.
You cup his face in your hands and press another kiss to his lips, “Are you sure I'm not bothering you?”
John nods, “Positive.”
Looking at John for a moment longer, you can tell he's not being entirely truthful with you. He's hiding something.
“I just...need to ask you something, and it might be a little weird.” he says, and you nod your head encouragingly. “Right now isn't the time though.”
You groan jokingly and head upstairs to see Tess on the couch, “We’re going out for some lunch.”
“Wanna come with?” John asks, and you turn around to look at him in confusion.
Tess gets off the couch and grabs her purse, “I am starving.”
You grab John’s hand as he walks past, then you pull him aside, “You’re still going to ask your question, right?”
John cups your face in his hands, then he tilts your head back so he can kiss you, “Let’s just have a nice lunch.”
__
Before you left for lunch, you stopped by and picked up Jimmy, then the four of you went out to eat. The conversations were good and the food was exactly what you wanted. John still hasn’t asked his question yet, and you kept a close eye on him all afternoon, hoping that his demeanor wouldn’t change, and thankfully it didn’t.
Tess asked you if you wanted to go swimming when you got home and you thought it’d be a good idea. Since it’s later in the afternoon, the sun isn’t directly above the pool and the air is getting a little cooler. It’s still hot as hell out, but it’s not too hot to go swimming.
You’re in your room going through your swimsuits, and you look up just as John walks in. He sits down on the bed, then he pats the spot next to him, “Come here, baby.”
Taking a deep breath, you sit down next to John and reach for his hand. The two of you sit in silence for a moment and your mind begins to wander to all the places it shouldn’t.
Is John really upset that Jimmy and Tess are staying here? Is John upset that you let Tess look in his safe? Is John upset?
“You know I love you, right?”
“Don’t start a conversation like that!” you look up at John and pull your hand out of his grip as he laughs, “I’m serious, John!”
He laughs and reaches for your hand again, “I just want you to know that I love you, and if your answer is no, I’ll understand.”
You shake your head, “You’re not making any sense right now.”
John reaches for your left hand and rubs his thumb over your engagement ring. He inhales deeply like he’s going to explode, then he lets it out as he looks at you, “If I asked you to go somewhere with me, would you?”
You smile, “I will go anywhere with you. And no, I didn’t mean for that to be as cheesy as it was.”
“Are you sure? Because what I’m going to ask you…is kind of weird.”
You scrunch your eyebrows in confusion and laugh, “Just ask me.”
“In a few days, it’s Helen’s birthday.” he says, and you nod your head. “Would you…come with me to visit her?”
“Really?”
John shakes his head and closes his eyes, “Sorry, it’s weird. I shouldn’t have asked. I can…I can just go by myself, if you don’t mind.”
“No, no, John, look at me.” you say, and John looks at you again, “I’m honored that you’d even want to take me with you. I think it’s very sweet. I’ll be honest, I always wondered when and if you’d ever take me to meet her. And please don’t ever feel like you need to ask my permission to go visit her. She was your wife, John. You’re allowed to go there. I don’t want you to think you ever have to ask my permission to do things, just like you don’t want me to think I have to ask you.”
John wraps his arm around your shoulder, pulling you closer, “I want her to meet you. I want her to see how happy I am now.”
You try to hide your face from John since you’re tearing up, but he cups your face and makes you look at him. He lets out a small laugh, then he presses his warm lips to your forehead.
“By the way, I don’t go there all the time. I haven’t been there in a year, the last time I went was for her birthday. I don’t want to go there all the time. Remember, we’re living in the moment.” he says, and you laugh as you look at him. “Going there and spending too much time there takes me away from where I really want to be: here. With you.”
“I’m really honored, John. I can’t thank you enough for truly opening your heart to me. It really means a lot, and it shows me that you really are committed to our relationship.” you say, moving closer for him to hold you. “I love you so much and I’m so proud of you. I can’t imagine how proud Helen probably is.”
John leans his head against yours and you watch as he spins your ring, “So, you’re not weirded out by this?”
“No, not at all.” you get up and grab your swimsuit so you can change -- Tess is probably wondering where you are. “I think it’s very sweet, and it means a lot that you think I’m good enough to meet Helen.”
John laughs, “Well, don’t say it like that. Of course you’re good enough.”
“Okay, maybe those weren’t the words I was looking for.” you say, watching John closely as you pull off your shorts, “Maybe the word I was looking for was…I don’t know. I guess it just means a lot to me that I mean enough to you to go meet her. Does that make sense?”
“It does.” he nods.
John is completely done with this conversation now that you’re undressing. You pull your underwear off and toss them to John, and he laughs as he holds them up like they’re some big prize. His gaze on you is now laser focused as you pull your shirt off and unhook your bra, and when your breasts fall out of your bra, he immediately gets up and cups them in his hands.
“You can’t keep your hands to yourself, can you? We were having a serious conversation.”
“Yeah, yeah…” John says, leaning down to kiss over your chest.
You let out a small laugh, then you turn around so John can help tie your swimsuit top. He wraps his arms around you, and your eyes meet in the reflection of the mirror. A smile tugs at your lips as you hold his gaze, then he leans his chin on your shoulder.
“You do mean a lot to me, peach.” he says against your cheek, “And I wouldn’t have asked you to go with me if you didn’t. And if you’re uncomfortable, you need to let me know. I don’t want you to do anything that makes you uncomfortable.”
You turn your head a little to look at John, “I’m not uncomfortable. I’m excited to meet her actually.”
“She would have loved you. I know I’ve told you that before, and it is a little weird to think about, but she would have.” he says, and you smile when you see him pulling out his swim trunks. You didn’t even ask if he wanted to go swimming with you, he doesn’t need permission, of course, it’s just kinda soft that he wants to go swimming.
“I bet I would have liked her too. She made you happy, so anyone who makes you happy is instantly likable in my book.”
John laughs as he pulls his shirt over his head, “You make me very happy.”
“You just want me to fall into a puddle of goo right here, don’t you?” you tease, walking over to kiss John, “I’ll meet you outside.”
John grabs your arm and kisses you on the lips, almost knocking the breath out of you and buckling your knees in the process. He moves your hair out of your face as you wrap your arms around his neck, then he kisses your forehead.
“I love you more than anything in this world.” he whispers, leaving his lips on your forehead.
Your eyes are still closed since you’re still trying to process that kiss, but you open them and look at John, “I love you, too.”
His hands slide down your sides and onto your ass, “I’ll meet you outside.”
__
After swimming this afternoon, you and John snuck up to the bedroom for a nice little quickie. John really blew your mind, so you’re currently still laying in bed naked as he takes a shower. The shower turns off, and you prop yourself up a little as John walks into the bedroom with a towel around his waist. When he sees you still in bed, he gives you a wink and smiles smugly.
“Really knocked you out, didn’t I?”
You laugh, “Yeah, well, you always do.”
John pulls on a pair of boxers and he starts to laugh when he feels you watching his every move, “You gonna get up, peach?”
Laughing as you sit up, you wiggle your legs and rotate your ankles, “My legs still feel like jello.”
“Well, you, uh, told me to…” he stops talking and turns around to look at you walking over to him.
You wrap your arms around his neck and lean up to kiss him, “Oh, I know what I told you to do.”
John moves you back to the bed as he crawls on top of you, kissing you with no end in sight. His lips on yours are persistent and his hands begin to explore up and down your body, then he leans back a little to look at you.
“I should shower.” you say, leaning up to kiss John again.
Exhaling heavily, you get up from the bed and head for the bathroom for a quick shower. Ten minutes later, you emerge from the bathroom in your robe to find John and Tess sitting on your bed talking. They both look at you as you walk through the bedroom and over to the dresser for a clean pair of underwear.
“Don’t mind me.” you laugh as you sift through your drawer, “Just grabbing some underwear.”
Since you’re wearing a robe, you don’t mind getting dressed in front of Tess. You quickly pull on your underwear under your robe, then you grab a sundress from your closet and put it on. From the corner of your eye, you see John watching you and when you look over at him, he gives you a small wink.
“I’ll let you girls talk.” John says, then he gets off the bed and heads downstairs.
“So, John told me that he asked you to go with him when he visits Helen. That’s a pretty big deal.”
You nod as you wring the water out of your hair, “Yeah, I’m kinda nervous though. I don’t know what I’m supposed to wear, or say, or even do. I don’t know. I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I’m honored that John even wants to take me to visit her, and it kinda makes me weak in the knees that he wants her to see how happy he is. But on the other hand, I’m nervous because I mean…it’s his wife. What if the sky turns dark and lightning strikes a tree, then a branch falls on me and kills me?”
“Your imagination knows no bounds, does it?” Tess laughs, and she walks over to you to brush your hair, “It’s going to be fine. I mean, do you think she’s gonna bust out of the coffin and grab your leg?”
You widen your eyes and shake your head, “I hadn’t even thought of that.”
“Stop!” Tess laughs, slapping you on the arm with your brush, “It’ll be fine. The two of you will probably go there, John will bring some flowers or something, he’ll say a few words and then you’ll leave. No biggie.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” you nod, exhaling slowly.
Tess looks at you through the mirror and smiles, “Don’t ever doubt how much that man loves you. While you were in the shower, he asked me like…4 times if you were weirded out by going to her grave. I told him no, of course. He told me to tell him the moment you mention it being weird. He loves you so much, and he genuinely cares about your feelings.”
“Would you be weirded out by it?”
Tess inhales deeply then she shrugs, “I don’t know. I guess it would be different if I was actually in that position, and I suppose it all depends on how I’m treated by him. If it were Jimmy’s late wife, then no, I wouldn’t be. He treats me well, and I know he loves me a lot. If it was like…Scott from high school, then yeah, I would be. But he treated me like shit, so there’s that.”
You nod your head as you look down at your hands, “Well, if John asks again before we go visit her, tell him I’m not weirded out, and I’m excited.”
“Will do, boss.”
The two of you head downstairs and find the boys on the patio with beers in their hands. John and Jimmy are both laughing and talking, and you and Tess take a moment to watch them.
“I adore how well they get along.”
You nod, “Me, too. John worries about Jimmy a lot. He’d never say it, but he does. He felt so bad when he saw the basement. I knew right away that he was going to figure out a way to help out. He worries about you too, by the way. Actually he referred to you as his little sister the other day. Tess, I swear to god, I nearly collapsed.”
Tess immediately tears up and hides her face in her hands, “You can’t tell me this kind of stuff right now! I’m very emotional!”
You laugh loudly as you open the patio door and step outside. You’re immediately greeted by Bleu and Sadie, and you reach down to pet them both before walking over and sitting in John’s lap.
The air is still so warm tonight, so you definitely won’t be having a bonfire. You’d melt. Tess and Jimmy have plans to go to a restaurant in Oyster Bay -- they’re trying not to spend too much time at your house -- and you and John have absolutely no plans at all.
John pats your leg to get your attention, then he pecks you quickly, “Wanna go for a walk by the lake?”
“I’d love to.” you smile and get off of his lap, “We’ll see you later.”
Tess and Jimmy wave as they head for their car, then you reach for John’s hand and make your way down the path near the lake. The sun is starting to set now, so everything is covered in a soft orange glow. John has your hand in his and his other hand in his pocket, and Bleu and Sadie are both running a few feet ahead of you. If only you had a baby, this moment would be absolutely perfect.
“You look beautiful tonight, by the way. The sun, it’s really…capturing you.”
“Oh, no.” you laugh and put your hands over your face when John starts to pull out his phone.
“Come on, baby. Smile for me.” he says, holding up his phone as he snaps pictures, “Ooh, that’s a great one. Lemme get one with you and the dogs.”
You kneel down with Bleu and Sadie on either side of you, then you smile as John takes another picture. John is taking an endless amount of pictures and he reaches for your hand so he can take a picture with you.
“I’m pregnant!” you say, watching John’s eyes grow wide, “Just testing it out.”
“You’re awful.” John laughs and puts his phone back in his pocket. “That was so mean.”
“It was, I’m so sorry.” you laugh hysterically and tilt your head back to kiss John, “No more jokes like that, I promise.”
__
You’re scrolling through your phone while John locks up the house, and you huff loudly when you see Rachel has left a comment on John’s picture. John went out with her twice, and he posts about you all the time on his instagram yet she always comments on his pictures as if you’re not even in them.
John lays down on the bed next to you and smiles when he sees your face a little twisted up in anger, “What’s the face for?”
You turn your phone and show him the picture of you and him together where your engagement ring is in perfect view, and he nods his head and smiles.
“Yeah, I liked it. I wanted to post it. Did you want to post it instead?”
You scrunch your face up and huff, “No, didn’t you see her comment?”
John laughs, “I don’t really read my comments that often unless you’ve written something. Baby, half the time, I don’t even know what I’m doing on that thing. I let you edit the pictures and have you send them to me. I only know how to post them, I’m old.”
Turning your phone back around, you put it John’s face and show him the comment where Rachel is, once again, asking John to go out for dinner. She does it every few weeks and it’s starting to piss you off. You’re very confident in your relationship, and you know that John would never stray and you know that he loves you. There really is no doubt in your mind about that. You don’t want to make him unfollow her because you don’t want to be that fiancee, but you really wish he would.
John shakes his head, “I’m sorry she does that. I know it upsets you.”
“I just don’t understand why she keeps commenting that stuff when she knows you’re engaged.”
John puffs his chest up and smirks, “Because she wants me.”
You look at John and roll your eyes, “Okay, stud.”
John pulls you closer to his chest and licks his lips, “You want me?”
“I already have you.” you say, and John glares at you for a moment before he begins tickling your sides. You’re nearly in tears and you’re laughing hysterically, and you can’t get John off of you since he’s so much bigger and stronger. “Okay! Okay! I surrender.”
Wiping the tears away from your eyes as you laugh, you sit back down next to John and he wraps his arm around your shoulder. He reaches over for his phone on the night stand, then he opens Instagram and goes to his followers.
“I…” he leans closer to you and shows you his phone, “I don’t know how to un…”
“Unfollow.” you laugh, taking his phone from him to do it yourself, “Are you sure you want to unfollow her? Don’t do it just for me.”
John furrows his brow and looks at you, “Of course I’m doing it for you. It makes you uncomfortable, and that upsets me. I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable. Would you unfollow people you dated if it made me uncomfortable?”
“If they were commenting things like she does, absolutely.” you nod, “I don’t follow anyone who I’ve dated before, but I would totally unfollow someone if it was hurting your feelings.”
John gestures to his phone, “Okay, then do it. I’ve been meaning to unfollow her but I don’t know how, and I didn’t want to ask since you’d just tease me for being old.”
You chuckle as you hand your phone back to John, “Done.”
“Kinda funny seeing you jealous. I’ve never seen you like that.” John says, and you look up at him as he smirks, “Won’t lie, it’s kinda hot.”
You scoff quietly, “Whatever.”
John leans down to kiss you as he takes his phone, then he kisses your forehead as you both get situated in bed. The TV is already on, and it’s open to Netflix so the two of you can continue watching your show. He leans back against the headboard a little, and you scoot closer to him and wrap one leg over his waist, then you wrap your arm around his stomach.
“Ready to maybe finish this? We have three episodes left.” you say, looking up at John.
John leans down to kiss you as he nods, “Yup.”
You snuggle closer to John and the two of you cling to one another as you become completely engrossed in your show, and you almost don’t notice John’s right hand is resting on your stomach.

Hello!
BIG NEWS PEOPLE! Our Will Read For Booze twitter account (formerly Sam’s personal account) is going to be dedicated to the whole blog! So go check us out kthxxxx. While that’s amazing, Sam has to start from scratch on a new account, let’s show her some love huh? Check out her new account TheBooktender_  She’ll love you forever and ever.
Ginny’s Updates:
Busy week, busier weekend. Short summary.
Currently Reading:
Wicked Fox  by Kat Cho: Sam heard good things about this book and picked up a copy at ALA. I’m not super far in but so far I’m enjoying the lore of it. I’m not particularly familiar with Korean lore so it’s interesting to try to pick it up. That being said, I’ve been moving further away from YA so I’m having a little trouble getting into the book. We’ll see how it goes.
Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time by Jeff Sutherland: It’s been a while since I read something for professional development. I received this book at a training a little while ago and decided to pick it up. This book talks about the best way to run a project. Pretty basic.
Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh: This if the 7th book in the Psy-Changeling series and at this point it should be very clear that I really enjoy this series. I’m a big fan of the various plotlines foiling serial killers. Right now, Dev, the leading of the Shine (an organization protecting children with Psy blood from the full-blooded Psy) has found a Psy woman with amnesia who clearly needs help. Cool.
Finished:
Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi: This was a fun read. The aliens who want to be introduced to the world look like humanity’s worst ideas of what aliens could be; amorphous blobs that speak through potent aromas. I liked the characters in this book, though it’s pretty easy to tell this is one of Scalzi’s early books. Still enjoyable. 3.5/5
The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite: Holy shit, this book was delightful. Lucy watches her GF/BFF marry a man and decides to leave. Goes to London to talk to the Countess of Moth about an introduction to the scientific society so that she can write a translation of the seminal astronomy work at her time (she worked as an astronomer with her now-deceased father). Both of these ladies have insecurities but reading them falling in love was wonderful! Watching they ways the worked (or didn’t work through) their problems was a ton of fun, always felt in character, and desperately hurt at times. 5/5
Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells: This is the third book in the Murderverse series. Murderbot continues to work their way around the universe, this time going on a mission to an abandoned planet to prove some wrong-doing of their previous owner. They originally hide from the team doing the exploration but obviously that doesn’t go to plan. Watching Murderbot start to realize the various ways they need to change to fit in with society, and the way they want to live is (to steal a word from Sam) precious. 5/5
Branded by Fire by Nalini Singh: The sixth book in the Psy-Changeling series, this is the first book that involves a relationship between two Changelings. Mercy and Riley have crazy chemistry and drive each other crazy; figuratively and literally. They’re also working together to try to deal with a kidnapping attempt that involves both of their packs. The way this world continues to be laid out is magical. I love the way the characters, locations, and political landscape continue to change to adapt to each book. 5/5
Wanted, A Gentleman by K.J. Charles: This is an author I keep seeing mentioned by the people I follow on twitter and now I completely understand it. This book features a freed slave’s complicated relationship with their prior owners teaming up with a seemingly ruthless man who writes basically personal ads to hunt down the daughter of the family of his old owners to save her from a bad elopement. This book is wildly dramatic and yet makes so much sense. 4.5/5
Queen of the Unwanted  by Jenna Glass: This is the sequel to the Women’s War that came out last year. I also received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, and I’d prefer not to say too much but if you read and enjoyed the first book you’re going to enjoy this one. If you want complicated relationships, women in power, and diverse personalities, this book has them all! 5/5
Destiny’s Embrace by Beverly Jenkins: Yup, lots of romance novels this week. Logan Yates is a ranch owner who ends up with Mariah as his housekeeper. She’s been abused by her mother for years and decides she’s not going to let anyone step over her, and goes toe to toe with Logan at every turn. There are some portions of this book that kind of get a side eye mostly because I think a few sentences about posture or something would make them a little more palatable. That being said, this was a lot of fun and a good start to a series. I’m looking forward to the next book 4/5
Linz’s Updates
What Linz read:
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing: Marketed as a cross between Dexter and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this contemporary novel introduces us to a married suburban couple who keep it spicy with a little bit of murder. I think it was kinda dumb they used Mr. and Mrs. Smith, when there are some good similarities to the Gone Girl genre, but whatever. I’m not mad I read it, but it was … fine?
The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis: sort of fantasy version of Old West Texas, where Good Luck Girls (ie prostitutes) are kept trapped to their welcome houses with cursed tattoos and a really shitty government. I thought the concept was alright, the ending was very good, and I really liked the protagonist, but some of the world-building was clunky and I thought some elements weren’t really explained.
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: I would never have heard of this book if it weren’t for my book club, and I’m kind of pissed about it because it’s REALLY good. Why weren’t more people talking about this 1920s-era mythology-heavy book? I loved the style of writing and the weaving of old and modern worlds, reminded me of American Gods in a better way.
What Linz is currently reading:
Queen of Ruin by Tracy Banghart: The sequel to Grace and Fury that I’ve been itching to get my hot hot hands on. Loved the first installment about two sisters who are forced to switch places in a horribly run patriarchal society.
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire: Had to put this down to knock out some ARC reading by drop dates, but Ginny will probably be happy to know I’m picking it back up so she can have her copy back.
Sam’s Updates
It’s Nats World Series Week so I’m spending my days working through hell and my nights (late nights) watching baseball. I. Are. Tired.
What Sam read this week:
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: This is our book club book for the month. Basically it’s the 1920s-ish in Mexico, and our main character Casiopea accidentally lets the god of death out of prison and he gotta put himself back together before he turns mortal and for a variety of reasons (including potential death herself) Casiopea goes with him. I’m not going to put too many thoughts here because book clube but I will be writing a follow-up drunk review to Minda’s sober one.
Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman: This is the first in a new sci-fi series by our fave Illuminae duo. Tyler has it made, he’s gonna get the #bestsquadever. But then when he’s out practicing space stuff, he finds a ship that has a buncha dead people in cryopods, except one isn’t dead, she’s Aurora. Anyway he ends up with the last of the last crews and may have accidentally witnessed the start of an intergalactic war. So.. that. I’m really really liking the dynamic of the squad, everyone is a little odd and a little broken but they’re starting to get to know each other. We’ll see if my love for them overcomes the pace of the story (slowwww).
A River Of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy: This is a story about a girl named Eva, she’s a princess. She’s gotta compete with her sister for the throne, to the death. But the thing is, she can’t figure out her magic. So she tries real hard to figure it out all while someone is trying to kill her. This book was fine. I sorta figured it out early but I enjoyed it so that’s good I suppose. 3/5 Shots Drunk Review coming.
…And Other Disasters by Malka Older: This is a collection of short stories that are in the world of sci-fi. I loved them all, and that rarely happens with collections like this. Everyone go pre-order it right TF now. 5/5
What I’m currently reading:
Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore: So this is a story of a family that always has 5 girls, 5 cousins. The men that spawn these women disappear, so it’s always the women. 5 ladies, 5 mothers, 5 Grandmas (abuelas), when suddenly a boy appears. He has no memories. Guys I know I’m slow going at this but some stuff happened in the book and now I’m v v sad.
Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan: This is the sequel to Girls of Paper and Fire which i didn’t…. love… but also didn’t hate. We’ll see how this goes. I’m predicting a ton of miscommunication between romantic relationships so…
The Kingdom of Gods by N.K. Jemisin: This is the final installment to the Inheritance trilogy. Seems to be about Sia. Listening on audio so we’ll see how it goes.
Minda’s Updates
No update from Minda this week.
Until next time, we main forever drunkenly yours,
Sam, Ginny, Linz, and Minda

Hold My Hand: John Wick x Reader Chapter 73
Tumblr media
warnings: a nsfw moment Hold My Hand Masterlist
John kept his promise from the night before, and he’s laying right next to you. His right arm is sprawled across the bed right above your head, and his left hand is resting on his stomach. Scooting closer to him, you scratch your nails lightly over his chest, trying to wake him up as peacefully as possible.
“Jonathan,” you whisper and sling your leg over his waist, “Baby, wake up.”
You move the hair from off his face and smile when he hums a little. He reaches for your hand and presses a kiss to it as he wraps his other arm around you. He snuggles closer to you, exhaling softly and falling back asleep.
“Oh, dear…” you say, struggling a little to get out of his grip, “John, no, you need to wake up. You’re crushing me. John, we need to look at your leg.”
You sit up a little and pull the covers from over John to look at his leg. There’s a little bruising around it, but for the most part, it’s healing really well. John is still out, so you decide to mess with him -- he’s been asleep long enough, and you’re starting to get bored already.
“Oh, my god!” you yell, dramatically.
John opens his eyes and sits up at lightning speed, “What?”
You laugh as you hold your sides, “Oh, man, I just wanted you to wake up. I’m getting bored!”
John shoves your shoulder a little as he looks at you, “You’re mean.”
“I am not! You did the same thing to me before, so really, it’s just payback.” you say, then you look down at John’s leg. You frown and slouch, rubbing your hand over his chest, “You didn’t take your medicine last night.”
Laughing as he lays back down, John rubs the sleep from his eyes and stretches out, “I took it.”
“You did?” you lay down next to him and smile, “Thank you. I know how much you hate it, and I’ve been pestering you all week about it. So, thank you. I’m glad my nagging has paid off.”
John looks down at you and smiles, “I don’t mind your nagging.”
You squint your eyes at John and laugh, “That was where you were supposed to say ‘oh, no, baby, you don’t nag. You’re amazing, I love you so much, and of course I’ll listen to you when you tell me to do something’. You know something along those lines.”
“Ooh.” John nods, smiling, “I’ll remember that for next time.”
__
You and John are walking hand in hand down the path that leads to small secluded pond, and he’s been talking your ear off the whole time. You don’t mind of course, you always love to hear the random stories John tells you, and since you’ve seen the kind of shit he gets into when he’s working, he’s being much more open about it.
“So, you just…lit the church on fire?”
“I had to, yeah.” he nods, then points to the opening in the trees.
“Well, I mean, you didn’t have to. We’re certainly not religious, but…kinda shitty.” you say, glancing over your shoulder at John.
John lets out a loud laugh that stops you in your tracks, and you turn around to look at him.
“It’s a front. Baby, it’s not a…functioning church.” he shakes his head and pushes you a little so you keep walking. “I wouldn’t just start an actual church on fire, I mean, if I had to, I would. But it wasn’t, and they probably put the fire put out right away.”
“You don’t have to explain yourself, Jonathan.” you laugh and stop walking again so he bumps into your backside. You look over your shoulder at him and smile, “I love you all the same. There is nothing you could tell me that would ever make me see you differently.”
John wraps his arms around you as best as he can since he’s carrying a wicker basket full of food. He leans his chin on your shoulder and starts to walk with you through the trees and bushes. When John stops walking, you turn around and look at him as he picks a small white flower from a bush. He looks at it in his hand, then he tucks it behind your ear.
“You look so cute today.” he takes a step back and shakes his head, “So many dresses lately, and the dresses you’ve been wearing when we go out…”
You laugh hard when John shakes his head again and bites his lip. He’s right, the dresses you’ve been wearing here aren’t something you’d usually wear, but you’re in a whole different country, so you’re having fun mixing it up and being a little provocative.
“What did you say to me that night at the club? Oh, ‘it’s nice to mix things up’.”
“Well, maybe you should wear some of this stuff when we get back home.”
“Hmm, maybe.” you smile and back away when John starts to walk closer to you. You hold his gaze for a moment, then immediately turn to run away from him as you giggle.
John catches up to you almost immediately and wraps his arms around you, “Your laugh has been killing me lately. Actually just you, in general. You’re so happy, and it’s making me so happy.”
“I don’t know, I just feel like we’re in a really good place. We both know where we stand in this relationship. We both know what we want, which is the same thing -- marriage and kids. I just feel so fucking happy.” you say, walking with John with your eyes closed; you trust him enough to keep you from falling.
“Are your eyes closed?” he asks, and you nod your head. “I can tell because you haven’t gasped yet.”
You slowly open your eyes and do just that. You gasp loudly and put your hand over your mouth as you look around. “Holy shit.”
There’s a small creek in front of you, and the water will probably only come up mid-calf, but it’ll fun to walk in. There’s wildflowers covering almost every inch of the ground except for a small patch, which is clearly used by most people as a picnic spot. You close your eyes again, listening to the water trickle, and you smile when you feel John’s arms around you.
“How do you do that?”
John leans forward a little and furrows his brow, “What?”
“You just keep…blowing my mind.” you turn around and wrap your arms around his neck. John’s eyes soften, and you feel that any moment he just might burst into tears. “I know you didn’t do this, but…I guess being with you makes it ten times more magical.”
John sets the basket down so he can cup your face in his hands, then he moves your hair off your shoulder and smiles as he leans in to kiss you. He presses another kiss to your lips before he sits down and reaches for your hand so you’ll sit down next to him. You open the basket and pull out the containers of pasta and smack your lips together when you see the bread tucked into the side of the bag.
“Wine or water?”
“Hmm,” you reach out and take the water bottle in John’s left hand, “Water. I have heartburn from all the wine last night.”
John opens the pasta and puts it up to his nose to smell it, “God, this smells good.”
The breeze is just perfect today, and you look up and watch the branches swaying in the wind. When you look back at John, he’s watching you with a smile on his face and he shakes his head, almost like he can’t quite believe that you’re here.
“Come here.” you stretch your legs out and pat your lap, “Lay down.”
John lays his head in your lap and closes his eyes as you run your fingers through his hair, softly massaging his scalp. The smile on his face is growing, and he peeks open one eye to look at you.
“So, if you could change one thing about our trip, what would it be?”
John sighs and opens his eyes to look at you, “You already know what that is.”
“Taking the job?” you ask, and he nods his head. “Well, that was my fault, really. I told you to take it, so the blame can be put on me for that.”
John immediately sits up and shakes his head, “No, I should have just listened to you. I never listen to you. I never give you a chance.”
“Jonathan, stop.” you sigh, shaking your head, “Stop. It’s fine. You trust yourself, you know your job better than I do, and you trusted that you would be fine. I mean, yeah, you got hurt but you were alive, and at the end of the day, that’s what I need to focus on.”
John sighs loudly and looks down at his watch as he fidgets with it, “I'm sorry about that. I truly am.”
“John!” you say with a laugh, “Stop. Can't we just forget about it?”
“I will never forget the look on your face when you saw me, I know I already told you that, but it broke my heart to see you so hurt. I've never seen you so hurt before.”
You look at John and shake your head, “I didn't like seeing you like that.”
John looks down at his watch again and nods his head, “You won't see me like that ever again.”
Reaching over for John's hand, you give him a genuine and sweet smile, then you decide to move the conversation along.
“Can you believe it’s going to be a year since we met in a few months? Feels like just yesterday.” you laugh quietly and look up at John, “I still remember our second date. We went to the park with Bleu, and we had a picnic. It was so sweet and simple, and I loved every minute of it.”
John laughs, “Yeah, and you lied and told me that you had a brother.”
Laughing loudly, you tilt your head back and shake it a little, “I don't know what I was thinking when I told you that. I just didn't want you to break my heart, so I thought that would help.”
“I'm never breaking your heart.” he smiles as he leans over to kiss your cheek.
“We need to plan our wedding. I mean, I know we just got engaged, but like I said at the hotel the other day, I really don’t want a long engagement. I don’t…” you start to smile and look away from John, “I actually don’t think I want to even wait a few months. I want to be married now.”
“Like…right this minute?” John says and smiles wide, “We could elope.”
You laugh and shake your head, “No, baby, I want my family there. But I think when we get home, like our actual home in Mill Neck, maybe we can plan some stuff out. I don’t want a complicated thing, just me, you, and our close friends and family. Then maybe a bigger reception where we can have more of my extended family and stuff.”
John leans over and kisses your cheek, “I think that sounds perfect.”
__
Walking with John back to the house, you spot Shiloh sitting on the bottom step. She sighs heavily and props her head up on her hands as she looks at the ground; she looks sad and bummed, and she’s probably bored out of her mind. You tug John’s hand a little and nod in her direction.
“Oh,” he laughs, “She’s waiting for you.”
“Hi, Shiloh.” you say, and she perks up when she sees you, then she runs over to hug you. “What are you up to?”
Shiloh’s cheeks turn a little pink and she holds up a note, “My mommy wanted me to give you this.”
You look up at John, furrowing your brow, then you look around for Gia or Christina, “Do your parents know you’re down here?”
Shiloh shrugs a little, kicking a rock, “I think so.”
“Oh, god.” you say, under your breath. You take the note from Shiloh and smile, “How about we go inside, maybe John can get you some ice cream?”
“Okay!” she smiles wide and begins her way up the stairs.
You turn to John and grab his arm, “They probably have no idea she’s even down here, we have to call and tell them. They’re probably worried sick.”
John smiles as he watches Shiloh, then he looks at you and laughs, “You’re gonna be such a good mom.”
You jokingly roll your eyes at John and look up to see Shiloh at the top of the stairs, waiting ever so patiently for her ice cream. She’s being a little bashful right now, which you’re sure is because she knows she’s probably going to get in trouble once you tell her parents that she came down unsupervised.
“I’ll get her some ice cream while you call them.” John says as you head inside.
You grab the phone off the table and head for the bedroom as you dial Gia’s number. You close the door a little, but you can still hear John talking to Shiloh to distract her.
Gia answers after the third rings, nearly breathless, “Hello?”
“Hi, Gia, it’s Y/N.”
Gia exhales, “Shiloh is there, isn’t she?”
You let out a laugh and nod, walking back out to the kitchen, “Yup, she’s here. Said she had an important note to give us, but uh, it’s just a grocery list.”
“Oh, Shiloh Grace.” Gia laughs with a sigh, “I told her that I would ask if you and John wanted to barbecue with us tonight, I guess she decided to just invite you herself.”
You sit down on the couch next to John and lean your head against his shoulder, “Yeah, we’re cool with that. Do you want us to bring anything?”
“Just yourselves, oh, and my daughter.” she says, and the two of you start to laugh. “This is totally out of line, but can you maybe keep her for like an hour while I run to the store? I know that’s terrible to ask, you could totally just…get on a plane and kidnap her, but for some reason, I really trust you two.”
“Oh, my god, yeah, we’ll watch her.” you say, and Shiloh perks up with ice cream all over her face. “We’ll head up to the house in about an hour.”
“Can I talk to Shiloh please?”
You hand the phone to Shiloh and she happily takes it. She presses it to her ear and she frowns for a moment, then she smiles wide, “Yes, mommy. I will, mommy. Bye.” she says, then puts the phone on the coffee table. “My mommy told me to not be nosey.”
You and John look at each other as you both start to laugh. He’s kneeling in front of her on the couch, and he gets up to grab a few napkins for her.
“So, Shiloh, how old are you?” you ask, tucking your legs under you on the couch.
Shiloh counts on her fingers, then she holds up one hand, “Five. Five and a half.”
John sits down on the other side of Shiloh and smiles as he hands her the napkins, “You know you’re not supposed to run around by yourself, right? You could get hurt.”
Shiloh nods, “I know.”
“You could fall down and hurt yourself, or you could get stuck somewhere. And sometimes people aren’t as nice as Y/N and I, they might take you.” he says, and he looks up at you as you widen your eyes and shake your head.
“Don’t scare her.” you mouth, but John shakes his head.
John looks at Shiloh, then up at you as he covers her ears, “She needs to hear this.”
What a dad.
“I know I’m not supposed to come down here.” she says, looking up at John, then she pulls out a band-aid from her pocket, “I wanted to give you this for your owie.”
You smile as you look at her, “Well, that was very sweet of you, Shiloh. I’m sure John would love to put that band-aid on.”
Shiloh carefully opens up the purple sparkly band-aid, then she leans over to put it over John’s cut across his cheekbone, “There!”
John smiles as he looks at you, “Well, how does it look?”
“Very good.” you smile as you lean over to kiss John’s cheek.
Shiloh giggles loudly when John kisses your cheek repeatedly, then she looks at you, checking to see if you maybe you need a band-aid. She looks at your legs for any cuts, then she frowns when she doesn’t see any.
“She’s much more careful than me.” John says, and Shiloh smiles as she looks up at you.
Shiloh begins to talk to John non-stop, and you sit back and watch the two of them. She’s talking John’s ear off, but he’s listening attentively. John looks over at you and smiles as he reaches over to touch your shoulder. His eyes are full of love and affection, and you just want to melt into this couch and live in this moment forever.
__
Walking up the dirt path with John and Shiloh, you look over at John and the huge smile on his face. Every moment the two of you spend with a child, John is his best self. He’s unbelievably happy, and it just proves that having kids with him will be the best thing to happen to you.
Shiloh runs in front of you a little and points across the yard at a stable, “My goat is in there. Her name is Nancy.”
“Nancy is a wonderful name.” you smile.
“And I have three cats!” she says, holding up three fingers, “They’re a family! There’s Pickles, Bob, and they have a baby named Baby.”
You chuckle, “Just Baby? That’s her name?”
“Yup!” Shiloh smiles proudly. “Do you have any pets?”
John laughs and kneels down when he sees a small black cat walking toward the three of you, “We have a dog.”
Shiloh perks up and smiles, “You have a dog? Is he here?”
“Nope,” John shakes his head and laughs, “He’s at home.”
You kneel down next to John and pull out your phone, “Do you want to see a picture?”
Shiloh nods her head, and you turn your phone to show her a picture of John and Bleu asleep on the floor. Shiloh covers her mouth as she giggles, and she looks over at John like she can’t believe he’s do something so silly.
“What’s his name?”
John stands back up and laughs, “Bleu.”
“Is that your favorite color?” Shiloh asks, and you watch as she reaches for John’s hand so nonchalantly.
“Nope,” he laughs and points to you, “But it’s hers.”
Shiloh nods, “I like blue and pink, oh, and I like green. And purple!”
Looking up, you see Gia poking her head out the front door, and Shiloh takes off running when she sees her.
“Hey.” you smile and follow behind them into the house.
“I just got back. Thanks for watching her, I hope she wasn’t a handful, or too nosey. She’s at that age.” Gia laughs, then leans down to kiss Shiloh, “Did you have fun?”
Shiloh smiles, then nods, “Yeah, I got ice cream.”
You laugh, “Sorry if we spoiled dinner.”
Gia waves you off and heads for the kitchen, then she turns around and gestures to the living room, “You two can make yourselves at home. The living room is right there.”
Shiloh grabs your hand and pulls you into the living room, and she points at a fish tank. It’s full of bright colored fish, and it’s trickling filter is so relaxing. It makes you want to get a fish tank for home.
“I have fish too!”
You kneel down next to it and look at all of the fish swimming around, “Wow, you must really like animals?”
Shiloh nods, “Yeah, I want to be a vegi…vegetarian.”
“A veterinarian.” you correct her, and she smiles. “You want to work with animals?”
Hopping on the couch next to John, she smiles wide and looks up at you, “What do you do? Do you work with animals?”
You shake your head and sit down next to John, “I don’t work with animals, but I do own a bookstore with John.”
“Wait…” Gia laughs as she walks into the living room, “You two own a bookstore?”
“We do.” John says, looking up at Gia when she walks in, “We actually just bought it a few weeks ago, and we’re fixing it up and changing some stuff.”
Gia smiles as Shiloh crawls into her lap, “That’s so cool. How did you two buying a shop even come about?”
“Well, I worked there before I met John.” you smile as John reaches for your hand, “But my old boss retired, and he was having all of these meetings with people who wanted to buy it, and he didn’t like any of them. One day I got a call from my sister, who also works at the shop, and she said we had another meeting with this guy. I was over it at this point, I just wanted it to be over with. But I got there and the guy…was John.”
Gia is nearly melting and she puts her hand over her heart, “So, is that how you two met then?”
John shakes his head, “Nope, we were neighbors first, though I had come into the shop a few times and seen her. She hadn't noticed me yet until I introduced myself one day while we were both outside.”
“Yeah, so we had been together for months and we were living together, but I had no idea that he snuck behind my back and literally bought a bookstore.” you laugh as you look at John, “It’ll be a year in September that we’ve been together.”
“That is so sweet.” Gia says, smiling wide, “Well, whenever we’re in…”
“Mill Neck, New York.” John smiles, “It’s about an hour from New York City.”
“Well, whenever we happen to be in Mill Neck, we’ll stop by and check out your shop.” she laughs.
Gia is looking at John, almost like she’s trying to read him, and when you look over at her, she looks away quickly. You’re used to it by now, the way people look at John. He’s handsome, so you definitely don’t blame them. The silence in the room is getting awkward, so you shift in your seat and look up to say something to Shiloh, but you see she’s fast asleep in Gia’s lap with her thumb in her mouth.
“I’m sorry.” Gia laughs and carefully gets up from the chair, “I’ll be right back, just gonna put her in her room.”
John looks over at you and whispers, “It wasn’t just me who noticed how awkward it got, was it?”
You shake your head and scoot closer to John, “No, no, I noticed too. She got…weird.”
John leans over to look down the hallway, then leans back over to you, “If I tell you to leave, you need to listen to me, okay? Go back to the house and pack our stuff up.”
“John--”
John shakes his head and shifts in his seat in a little, “No, no putting up a fight and trying to defend me, okay?”
You nod your head and swallow hard, “Okay.”
“I love you.” he whispers, then leans over to kiss you before Gia walks back out.
Gia sits back down on the couch and lets out a small laugh, “I’m sorry. I freaked you two out, I think. Wasn’t my intention. It’s just…I can’t pretend like I don’t know who you are, John.”
John’s grip on your hand tightens and he moves you behind him a little like he's protecting you with his body, and Gia notices. She looks up at John, almost horrified and she shakes her head.
“No, no, no. Don’t worry! You’re fine. Everything is fine.” she laughs nervously, “You’re John Wick. It’s hard not to know who you are.”
“We can leave.” John says quietly, and even though he’s good at hiding it, he’s hurt.
Gia shakes her head and laughs, “Please, that’s unnecessary. And if I was scared of you or wanted to kill you, do you really think I would have left my daughter with you? I knew who you were the moment you reserved the tree house.”
“She has a point.” you laugh, and John looks over at you in shock. “Jonathan, please, if she was scared of you, she would have declined your reservation the moment she saw your name. She left her daughter with us. Would you ever in a million years do that? No. Baby, it’s fine.”
John nods slowly, then looks over at Gia, “I’m sorry.”
Gia shakes her head again and reaches over to tap John’s leg, “Don’t be. I could have went about that differently. Seriously, you have nothing to worry about. It’s fine.”
John pulls you closer to his side and puts his left arm over your lap, “I just…have to protect her. I’m sorry if I’ve scared you, or maybe Christina, she hasn’t been around much. I don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. We can pack up and leave tonight if you need us to. We won’t be any trouble.”
You frown a little when Gia looks at you, and you wrap your arms around John’s bicep when you realize how worried he’s getting.
“John, seriously, it’s fine.” she laughs and looks over at you, “The way she looks at you…”
You smile at John and intertwine your fingers with his, “It’s okay.”
John leans over and presses his lips to your forehead, allowing the warmth from his lips soak into your skin, and you close your eyes as a smile spreads across your face.
“The way she looks at you lets me know everything is going to be okay. I don’t know, that’s a weird thing to say, but it’s true. I can see how much you love her by the way she looks at you.” Gia laughs and blushes a little, “She’s obviously in love with you, and someone like her wouldn’t be in love with someone like you if you weren’t a good guy.”
You tilt your head and look at John, “See, even she gets it. She’s a smart one.”
John is so tense, but when he looks over at you and sees you smiling, he finally relaxes. His shoulder droop a little and he laughs quietly as he shakes his head, “I’m sorry, I just have to be careful. And I have her now, so I’m always…on edge.”
Gia nods, “I get it, but trust me, John, everything is fine.”
You furrow your brow a little and look at Gia, “This is really random and weird, but you don’t really…uh, have an accent? Are you American?”
“I am!” she smiles, “Missouri. How did a girl from Missouri end up in Italy? I’m sure you’re wondering.”
You let out a laugh and sit back on the couch, pulling John next to you so he’ll relax a little more. He shifts a little on the couch and places his hand on your thigh, and you wrap your arms around his bicep.
“So, you know how in high school sometimes you get to take trips with your class? Like in your senior year?” she asks, and you nod your head. “Well, I took an Italian class and at the end of the year, several kids were selected to come here. I was one of them. I came here and just fell in love. I was already in love with Italy, my family is Italian, so I was already familiar with a lot of things.”
You nod, “Your name is Gia, so I figured you were Italian.”
“Dead give away.” she laughs, “Anyway after graduation, all of my friends were going off to college, and they knew what they were going to be, but I still had no idea. I just knew I couldn’t get Italy out of my head. I told my family I wanted to move here, and they were all pretty supportive. I worked at a shitty ice cream place for a year straight to try and save as much money as possible, then I moved here.”
“How long ago was that?” John asks.
“Almost ten years ago. I moved here when I was 19. I was so scared, but so excited. I started working at a restaurant, and one day I decided to take the day off and just wander around town. I bumped into this girl – and I’m sure you both know by now, I talk to anyone and everyone. I’m very outgoing.”
You laugh, “Yeah, we’ve noticed. It’s rubbed off on Shiloh as well. It’s a great quality to have though, I’m painfully shy sometimes.”
John laughs quietly and pats your leg, and you look over at him as you laugh. If anyone knows how shy you are, it’s John. You practically hid behind him every time someone tried to talk to you at the hotel.
“I bumped into this girl, and she invited me to a party. No, the girl wasn’t Christina, but I did meet her at the party. She was just sitting by herself, not really talking to anyone, and I couldn’t have that. So, I walked over and sat down next to her, talked her ear off. She told me how her family owns several of these bed and breakfasts all across Italy, and I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever heard of.”
You smile, “That’s when you realized what you wanted to do?”
“Yup.” Gia nods, smiling wide, “I asked her if they would hire me as a maid or something. She said that she needed some help at the bed and breakfast that she had just started to fix up, so I started working there. Just planting flowers, mowing the lawn, painting the bedrooms and stuff. Anyway, clearly we fell in love. She couldn’t resist me, what can I say?”
“How did you two end up owning a tree house?” you laugh and look up at John, “He wasn’t so sure about it, but as soon as I saw the pictures, I was in in love with it.”
Gia nods, getting situated in her chair, “Well, Christina and I bought this house and started to fix it up. We have a ton of property here, so we were wandering around one day and we saw that tree and it just clicked for both of us, how perfect it’d be for a tree house. We fixed it up, all while I was pregnant, by the way. That was quite an adventure. If you two plan to have kids, don’t do big renovations while you’re at it.”
“We’ll keep that in mind.” you laugh, looking up at John.
“It was very stressful, but I think Christina are closer because of it.” she smiles, “Anyway, Shiloh was born right before we opened it for the first time. We haven’t had any problems with it, we always introduce ourselves to the people, we always make sure to keep our distance to give them privacy. Until you two go here.”
John laughs, “I think by now we’re pretty used to always having people around.”
“That’s true. Seeing as my sister lives across the street from us.” you laugh and look over as Christina walks in the front door.
“Excuse me.” Gia says and gets off the couch, leaving you and John alone.
John squeezes your thigh to get your attention, and you look over at him and smile. He leans down to kiss you a few times, and you suck on your bottom lip when he pulls away from you.
“Hi.”
“You okay?” John whispers.
You nod your head and shift a little to look at John, “I’m great. Kinda hungry.”
John nods, “Me, too.”
“Don’t worry about them, baby.” you whisper, leaning a little closer to him, “I trust them, I think they’re good people.”
John looks over as Gia hugs Christina, and he looks back at you and smiles, “Me, too.”
__
You’re sitting at a table with Shiloh in the middle of you and John, and he’s currently trying to help her cut her burger in half. Gia and Christina are both watching with smiles on their faces, and Shiloh thanks John before she spills ketchup all down her shirt.
“Baby, you’re a mess tonight.” Christina laughs.
“Oh, you should have heard what she did earlier.” Gia says, looking at Christina, “She went down to the tree house and waited for them outside.”
Christina gasps and looks at Shiloh, “You know you’re not allowed to do that. You’re not allowed to walk around without me or mommy. You need at least one parent with you at all times.”
“I know, mama.” Shiloh says, looking down at her hands.
“I already scolded her quite a bit earlier.” Gia laughs, “She knows better.”
John looks over at you and smiles, then he reaches over to touch your shoulder. You hold his gaze for a moment longer, then you look over at Gia.
“You two probably want to head back soon, huh?”
You nod, “I’m a little tired today. We went down to the creek and had a picnic, and it was so relaxing, but I think our time in Rome is starting to catch up with me.”
“How long were you in Rome?”
“Just a week.” John says and starts to clean up his plate, taking yours as well.
“Perfect timing, the festival just started.” Gia says, looking at Shiloh, “We plan on going tomorrow.”
John nods, “Yeah, we plan on going as well. Maybe tomorrow, not sure yet.”
“I wanna go tomorrow.” you smile at John as you get up, “But we can go whenever you want.”
John looks at you and laughs, “Well, I guess we’re going tomorrow then.”
You start to clean up your stuff when both Gia and Christina stop you, “Please, it’s the least I could do.”
Christina shakes her head, “You’re our guests.”
“Thank you for this.” John says, gesturing to the table, “And again, I’m sorry about earlier.”
Gia reaches out and touches John’s arm, “It’s fine.”
Standing up straight, you reach out for John’s hand and move closer to him. You tap Shiloh’s shoulder and smile, “Maybe we’ll see you at the festival tomorrow, and maybe…if it’s okay with your parents, you can come have a pool party with me. John doesn’t swim much, but he might get in if we push him in.”
Shiloh smiles and nods, “Okay!”
You and John both wave to them as you head back down the dirt path to the tree house. The sun has already set, so all of the solar lights are beginning to come on and the garden looks so beautiful all lit up.
John wraps his arm around your shoulder and presses a kiss to the top of your head, “What do you want to do now?”
“I was thinking a nice bath would be a good way to end the night.” you smile and look up at John. “I actually have something really important that we need to talk about, and I know your mind is already going a mile a minute to figure out what it is, but I promise you, it’s something really, really good.”
“You are absolutely right, my mind is already racing.” John laughs, then he moves so you can go up the stairs first.
Heading for the bathroom, you look over your shoulder a little to see John following behind you, so you turn around and reach out for him.
“Stop over thinking it, Jonathan.” you laugh and tilt your head back as John leans down to kiss you, “I was just thinking…”
“Yeah?”
You squint one eye and laugh, “I was thinking we should have some dessert.”
“You’re so full of shit.” John laughs, then throws you over his shoulder as he continues walking in to the bedroom. He plops you on the bed and lays down on top of you to keep you from moving, “You don’t have to tell me what you’re thinking, but I would love to know what it is, you’ve built it up so much.”
You shrug, moving John’s hair out of his face, “I really was thinking that we should have some dessert.”
John’s moves his hands down to your waist and slowly lifts your dress up, “Yeah?”
“Mhm.” you nod, sucking on your bottom lip when John moves lower between your legs. He pulls your panties to the side and immediately buries his face, and you grab a fistful of his hair as you arch your back, “Holy shit!”
“So, you want some dessert, huh?” he asks, kissing your thighs as he stands back up.
You reach out to unbutton John’s pants, then you slide them down just enough for John to pull himself out of his boxers. John carefully moves you back on the bed and pulls your underwear to the side, slowing inserting himself between your legs as you moan loudly. “Fuck, you feel so good!”
“Didn’t even get your clothes off.”
You laugh as you open your eyes, “It’s alright. Kinda hot, honestly. You just have to have me right this minute.”
“I do.”
John hangs his head as he slowly begins to move his hips, then he leans up to kiss you hard on the lips. Wrapping your arms around John’s neck, you pull him down on top of you and smile when your eyes meet.
“This was your idea of dessert?”
John laughs, “Well, I mean...yeah. Wasn’t it yours?”
“No, I meant ice cream.” you laugh loudly as John buries his face in the crook of your neck, then you pull back to look at him, “But this is good too.”
John takes a long look at you before he starts to rock his hips faster, “Good.”
You giggle loudly as John kisses your neck, unintentionally tickling with his beard. He leans up to see your face, then he shakes his head as he leans down to kiss you. As John begins to move his hips faster, your mouth drops as you let out a loud moan, and you grip his biceps tighter in your hands as he hits your hidden spot relentlessly.
“Wait,” you put your hand on John’s chest and stop him, “Hold on.”
John furrows his brow as he moves off of you, and you try to hold in a laugh when you see how bummed he looks. He watches you closely as you pull your underwear off and toss your dress to the floor. You turn around to look at him when you get to the bathroom door, and you cock your eyebrow up.
“Well, are you gonna fuck me in the shower, or what?”
John immediately stands up from the bed to pull off his clothes, and he gets a little frustrated when he realizes he’s still fully dressed. He walks over to you as he kicks off his pants, and you laugh loudly as he grabs you and carries you off the bathroom.
