The Living Force Live-Tumbl Part 4
Part 1 Part 3
Chapters 16-24
-Nobody told me sabacc was also tarot! Now that I look at the cards (which have indeed been made IRL) it makes a lot of sense- there are 76 cards in a deck (tarot has 72) including a sort of major arcana. Has anyone created a sabacc divination guide?
-Partner: "Zilastra is a certified gamer"
-I love the parallel between Captain Baylo's "Do people call you the Mace Windu?" and Zilastra's "Don't call him The Lobber."
-I hope Plo and Saesee unionize these drivers and negotiate a collective bargaining agreement. They've solved this problem, but surely it won't be the last.
-Heezo is really coming up more in this book than I thought he would, as a lil glup shitto from another novel.
-HMMM what is up with Regal Voyager?
-Special shoutout to Eeth Koth's library adventures! As a public library worker, I am WELL VERSED in things not being where they say they should be or perhaps there at all. Commonly stolen items: astrology and other occult topics and The 48 Laws of Power and its like.
-Oppo's conversation with Voh and Eeth about being old made me wonder how it must feel to live and work with species of varying lifespans. Obviously the long-lived ones must see people be born and die over and over, but what about from the other perspective? Oppo jokingly calls Eeth a youngling- how must it feel to be of equal rank to such long-lived beings as him, Yoda, Yarael, etc?
-OK I want a boolah. Eeth is a curmudgeon. They seem like adorable opossum ferret cats. I want snuggles.
-Very ready for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's hoarder house adventure.
-Baradium-357 is another A New Dawn reference!
-The section with the Sullustan who works at the arena was my partner's equivalent of the library sections for me.
-Who is Lyal's shadowy contact??? Something related to the pirate gangs? A new player?

The Living Force Live-Tumbl, part 3
Part 1 Part 2
Chapters 10-15
-Maz Kanata shoutout! A pirate queen who has a very special relationship with the Jedi. I wonder if Sav Malagan is still alive and/or if there's still a Jedi temple on Takodana at this point.
-Depa you're gonna know what it's like to be a parent soon enough! I wonder if Kylah was good practice for Caleb.
-Part Two: Good Works! This truly is the coda to the High Republic. I wonder if we'll see a mention of Kwenn in upcoming Phase III books. If the project happened 200 years ago, it must have been one of Lina Soh's projects, right? Maybe before the events of Light of the Jedi?
-Every time they say Sanctuary Mount I think they're gonna say Sanctuary Moon.
-My partner asked "Do you think Oppo Rancisis leaves a trail?" I said no because he's a snake, not a slug lol
-Seneschal Voh is literally a little guy! Seems like this is the first time Bimms have been in canon. They're basically dwarves!
-AVAR KRISS MENTION
-As a library worker, I appreciate that this Jedi library has a book cart. Seems to work better than the ones we have!
-Even Piell is quickly becoming my favorite council member. Marc Thompson has given him sort of a Slavic accent with a 40s gangster lean. And he knows how to listen to teens. We love that.
-Veers is here????? Would never have put him on my bingo card! Wild!
-Captain Baylo isn't my favorite but I do have sympathy for him trying to run a ship that's basically a boot camp for rich kids. Ugh.
-Uh-oh, Plo and Saesee ran into the middle of a labor dispute!!!

My two-part plan to fill the time between the end of Picard and the start of the new season of Strange New Worlds is going very well. Cheers for Una McCormack, John Jackson Miller, and Star Trek.

Obi-Wan:
The Tatooine villagers, literally 5 minutes after his arrival: is he ok?? Why does he dress like that?? Does he even know how to shop?? Have you seen his house? I bet he never washes. Oh and he talks to himself. What a weirdo

[book review] star trek: discovery: die standing by john jackson miller (2020)
i love mirror georgiou on the show because of her interactions with burnham but i knew this probably wasn’t going to be one of my favorite novels going in. for one thing i just unambiguously hate section 31, i really think the star trek universe would be better off if we just quietly retconned them out of existence.
i did enjoy the prologue showing the prime universe version of georgiou meeting with quintilian, and i also enjoyed the second prologue showing mirror georgiou in her element back in her own universe, including thinking about using other fairly powerful people as sexual playthings. at one point she literally teases a pirate friend of hers about how she tied her up in the bedroom once, and i just… i’m sorry! i’m kinky af. i enjoyed imagining finding myself under her lash. you know what? i’m actually not sorry. also once the main action of the story moves back to the prime universe, i enjoyed mirror georgiou reminiscing about owning a nightclub on qo’nos and having scantily clad hotties around all the time.
finnegan was a weird pull. frankly i could’ve gone without being reminded that that character existed. he worked fine in this story, and i appreciate that we meet him in fucking jail having washed out of starfleet. emony dax was also kind of a weird pull, but one i approved of much more. i know this is the kind of “making the world smaller” stuff i usually complain about, but frankly if you have an excuse to get a dax involved in a star trek story you just do it, in my opinion.
i did not enjoy that that jail georgiou found finnegan in was clearly abusive as fuck but nevertheless had some kind of working relationship with the federation. the need to imply that there’s a seedy underbelly to the federation is just never something i enjoy about star trek, and it’s something anything starring these section 31 chucklefucks always has to go out of its way to do, and i’m just so bored of it i’m sorry.
they did at least have admiral cornwell get all righteously angry about how bad the prison was and more than imply that she was going to push for the federation to revoke their agreement with it, but idk given the federation’s commitment to rehabilitative rather than punitive justice, it seems super weird they would farm this kind of thing out in the first place.
i just kind of hate it when people working on star trek think the only way to comment on the problems of the present are to reproduce them. star trek is at its best when it comments on these things by showing a better way.
anyway yeah this was fine but it didn’t blow me away or anything. i didn’t hate it! and there was every reason to believe i might’ve given all the factors working against it, so in the end i suppose that’s a win.
