Young Woman Reading at Window. Johanne Mathilde Dietrichson (Norwegian, 1837-1921). Oil on canvas.
Dietrichson (born JM Bonnevie) underwent a drawing course in Kristiania, and then traveled in 1857 after Adolph Tidemen's council to Düsseldorf to further her education. Here she worked in Otto Mengelberg's studio until 1861. The following year she married the art historian Lorentz Dietrichson and followed him on his travels.

Farmhouse Interior (1875). Johanne Mathilde Dietrichson (Norwegian, 1837-1921). Oil on canvas.
Dietrichson specialized in late romantic, anecdotal genre painting, of which this is a good example. The maid puts aside or holds her cleaning tools while she takes advantage of the many books and reads intently. A letter, on the floor, may have fallen from the open book.
