To Ricardo Muñoz Suay
Mexico City, 3 May 1969
Dear Ricardo, I see from your letter that both you and Nieves have been ill. It seems to have been more a shock than anything else, but you should take care of yourself: not too much, of course! Several friends have had the same thing and they are as fit as fiddles. These days it’s a challenge to find anyone completely immune to the thousand and one diseases of our scummy century. The only good advice, I feel, is not to take your work too seriously. If you get to the studio and the set’s not ready and Sarita Montiel hasn’t shown up… ‘Action!’ Let them both go to hell, while you relax. Stress is the worst thing.
La Séquestrée de Poitiers, the book I mean, was one of the many (or should I say the few) books that the surrealists liked, but as far as I know they never wrote about or commented on it. The interesting thing about the book or the case it describes, is how, in a world supposedly run on reason, utterly irrational things can suddenly occur that undermine or change that assumption. Hitler, for example. That a ‘satanic’ madman could enthral millions in the country of reason and philosophy is another example. I won’t go on though because I’m anti-epistolic.
I’d like to hear what you and Nieves think of The Lacteal Way. I’ve heard nothing about what happened at Valladolid.
Of course, if Tristana goes ahead (who knows?), I’d like you to be there and not to lose your temper even if Fernando Rey can’t remember his lines. Relax!
Hugs for Nieves and hugs for you, Luis

Exorcismus (2010) aka The Possesion of Emma Evans
Written by David Munoz. Directed by Manuel Carballo. Starring Sophie Vavasseur, Stephen Billington, Jo- ann Stockham and Doug Bradley (for about 2 minutes) Plot: a young girl believes she is possessed and seeks out an exorcism from a priest First off if you watch this because of Doug Bradley’s billing, you will be disappointed as he is only in a tiny little bit. The movie itself was well made,…

Invisible in the food we eat, the people we kiss, and inside our own bodies, viruses flourish?with the power to shape not only our health, but our social, political, and economic systems. Drawing on his expertise in microbiology, Joseph Osmundson brings readers under the microscope to understand the structure and mechanics of viruses and to examine how viruses like HIV and COVID-19 have redefined daily life.Osmundson?s buoyant prose builds on the work of the activists and thinkers at the forefront of the HIV/AIDS crisis and critical scholars like Jos? Esteban Munoz to navigate the intricacies of risk reduction, draw parallels between queer theory and hard science, and define what it really means to ?go viral.? This dazzling multidisciplinary collection offers novel insights on illness, sex, and collective responsibility. Virology is a critical warning, a necessary reflection, and a call for a better future.

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag 2020
Stolen from @the-forest-library !
Best book you’ve read so far in 2020: (I’m not counting rereads for this because if I did, this list would be quite long) My top three include: Among Others by Jo Walton, Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier and Possession by AS Byatt
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020: Probably The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Does The Empire of Gold by SA Chakraborty count? Because even though it isn’t released until the 30th it is by far my most anticipated release for this half of the year, if not all of 2020.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik and The Secret Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab
Favorite new author (debut or new to you): New to me: A.S. Byatt definitely
Biggest disappointment: Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw or The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Biggest surprise: I was not expecting to love Among Others by Jo Walton as much as I did.  But also, The Deep by Rivers Solomon was amazing.
Book that made you happy: (going with a couple rereads for this question): Paint the Wind by Pam Munoz Ryan, Little Women by Lousia May Alcott, and Anne of Green gables by LM Montgomery,
Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character: Anluan from Heart’s Blood 😂
Book that made you cry: I got a little choked up during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows during the “stay close to me scene’ at the end in the forest :’(
Favorite book to film adaptation you saw this year: Little Women!!
Most beautiful book you’ve bought or received this year so far: Pan’s Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun by Cornelia Funke and Guillermo del Toro is quite stunning.  I also really love the cover for The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu
Book you need to read by the end of the year: I want to read the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov!
Tagging anyone who wants to do this!!

268 Directors and the end of the blog
This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.
This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.
It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.
I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.
I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.

Warning for: death, amputation/dismemberment, discussion of murder
“Yes, mija, just like that. Place your hand there...”
Deana took a deep breath and gently put a hand on the beast’s head. The long-necked monster with arms for legs had approached her and bowed its head. It, just as the other monsters, had been far calmer than they had ever been.
“Got more headin’ your way, Deana!” The twins Laine and Zane Misota flew overhead (one of the officers gave Zane a jacket, thank god), herding the monsters towards the Morrison family.
Glowing irises were hidden behind closed lids, and power that had been stored up over the past several hours was finally unleashed through her fingertips. Cold gripped her stomach like it was being held by a giant clothespin. Green smoke puffed from behind the creature’s mask, and it slowly collapsed onto the ground. Relief washed over her--not her own, but the spirits’, as they finally left the body they had been forced into for so long. Some passed on easily--others remained. Abuela beckoned them to follow her, just as she did the other spirits, and slowly made her way towards the police as she spoke to them.
Anita, eyes puffy and red, placed her hands on Deana’s shoulders and managed a smile. “Yes... just like that. Excellent. You’re growing.”
Deana tried to match her smile, but it was small and tired. She finally revealed the fate of Danny, Katarina, and Callie to her family and theirs. The Xis were heartbroken, especially when the “combination” creature was exorcised and they saw Danny’s face attached to it.
Deana talked to him. He hugged her and told her it wasn’t her fault, and he promised to watch over her. At least now he could be with his sister Vivian--Deana remembered her having been murdered three years prior. Lo and behold, when he walked off, a young woman appeared, grinning wide, and Danny ran to her, laughing and crying as she spun him in her arms.
Anita and Abuela both mourned the loss of Katarina. They spoke to Katarina prior--her spirit. It was impossible, they thought. A Munoz’ soul belonged to the devil once they died. That was the exchange for their powers. But maybe, just this once, the demon who haunted the Munoz family decided to turn the other way, just once, and allow the girl who had suffered her whole life and suffered in death into Heaven. Deana made Danny and Vivian promise to take care of Katarina.
Mourning fueled their exorcisms of the monsters--the cable-legged spider with only seven legs now, Mr. and Mrs. Dillinger, and several monsters they had no idea even existed--throughout the day. The police had been called earlier, and nearly the entire station was out, and even squads from neighboring cities and towns had been called in. Ambulances swarmed the area, emergency personnel from all over trying to help the poor confused people who had been victim to Rhys. Deana was certain the poor secretaries in stations all over were swamped with calls. This was every secretary’s nightmare.
But, as exhausted and cried-out they were, Deana, Anita, and Abuela were all thrilled. So many lost spirits could now be at peace. Missing people could go back to their families. Katherine Marisa Brown finally got the justice she deserved, and Deana was determined to make sure that she was lauded as the hero she was.
Hours passed. It finally seemed like the last of the monsters were freed. Construction lifts were being used to move the bodies, and it took SWAT teams just to keep reporters at bay. (It was true mayhem; the city was rather short-staffed and needed help. Something like this was absolutely unprecedented.) The dead bodies the twins had found the night everyone thought Mickey had been attacked were taken. Those squipped and kidnapped were moved to shelters. It finally seemed like their job was over.
“Deana!” She turned at the sound of her name, and she saw Joanne Alanis, bless her heart for her work during the case and now, looking haggard and distraught... but with tears in her eyes.
“Jo? What is the matter?”
Joanne was trembling, and she licked her dry lips. “You’re going to want to see this.” Worry filled Deana’s stomach, and she and Anita quickly followed after Detective Alanis.
Deana skidded to a halt, her hands flying to her mouth.
There was a girl, on a stretcher, missing an arm and covered in bruises and cuts but very much alive. Dirt matted her short blonde hair, and her glasses were broken and askew, but she was very much alive. Green eyes were foggy and unfocused, but she was very much alive.
She was alive.
“Callie...?” Deana rushed over to the girl, taking her remaining pale hand in her dark ones. Tired eyes flitted up to Deana, and Callie Bell began to cry.
“D--Dede... Is... that...?” Her voice was weak, and tears began to pour from Deana’s eyes as she shushed her girlfriend and brushed wavy strands out of her eyes.
“No, no, mi amor, p-please, save your--your strength... ¡Ay, Dios mío...!” Deana Morrison broke down into tears over Callie’s injured but breathing body, and she felt Callie gently squeeze her hand.
“I... knew you... w--would fuh--find me...”
“Mi amor, I thought you were...!”
“I... I-I know...” Callie managed the smallest but most genuine of smiles, and Deana nearly collapsed to her knees from how much she loved this girl. “That...g--guh--guy, Rhys... told m-me... B-but... I-I n--nev-er guh--gave up... Th--that’s... wuh-wuh-what you t-told m-me, right...?”
“Sí... sí, sí, sí, I did, I-I am so proud of you, Callie, I am so p-proud...!”
--
For the next month, Joanne Alanis and Anita Morrison headed the investigation of any missing persons unaccounted for, searching for spirits and, subsequently, their bodies. Several didn’t remember, but it seems that a brief meeting with one Katherine Brown managed to jog their memories, and more bodies were found in the lab. Legendary Valerie Munoz, despite now being in her 90s, came out of retirement and brought the news of any dead family members and friends to the living. (Most, surprisingly, took it well; they were glad to know the fate of the missing person and that they were now at peace.)
Deana did want to help, she truly did. But there were a few more important things that needed to be taken care of.
First and most important was Callie. Though able to retrieve her arm, nerves were cut. The arm had been surgically removed, and it was useless to Callie. Deana stuck close to her girlfriend’s side, helping her adjust to life with one arm, assuring her that no matter what, Callie would always be beautiful and Deana loved her so very, very much. (Sometimes Deana thought she would feel the spirit of Jaclyn Bell around. Callie would seem to talk to her dead sister. Deana had to wonder if Jaclyn was one of the reasons Callie was able to survive for so long.) It would be a difficult adjustment, the two of them knew, but Callie Bell, genuinely, was so happy to be alive.
Deana invited the search party to attend Katherine Marisa Brown’s funeral service, and Deana led the service. She admitted that she did not believe Katherine initially, and that time proved her to be a fool. She admitted that she did not know Katherine in life. But she wasted no time in thanking Katherine for what she had done. It did not matter if the intent was truly to save them or if it was solely vengeance; it didn’t change the fact that she did save them where they could not save themselves, and that without her, they would have been killed or squipped, so many families would not have their loved ones back, so many other spirits would not be at rest, and, frankly, the world at large would have been in danger. Katherine Maria Brown was a hero, and she deserved to be remembered as such. Perhaps it was her imagination, but Deana thought she saw Katherine at her own service, and she was smiling.
Deana held similar services throughout the month for other spirits who had no relatives or friends that would take their remains; she swore to them that no spirit would go without tribute. It exhausted her, but it was worth it. (Callie made sure that she got rest.)
---
Finally, it came time for one Jared Kleinman’s funeral. Deana felt him there the whole time, of course, but it seemed as though everyone saw him at some point. Not caring how bizarre it would look, Deana and Callie, fingers intertwined, went up to Jared’s spirit. Both of them had tears rolling down their faces--light refracted on the tears from Deana’s glowing eyes. Deana’s throat was closed up; no words came to her.
Instead, Deana bowed. A deep bow at the waist, one of respect. Standing straight and smiling, she finally managed to find her voice: “It was an honor.”
Callie let go of Deana’s hand for a moment and took the black hair clip from her blonde hair. She placed it on the head of the casket before slipping her sole hand back into Deana’s. Callie smiled at Jared as well. “I--It l-looks b--buh-better on y-you.”
This time, both of them bowed to Jared, and then to the spirit of Mickey who had arrived at the end of the service. Deana gave Callie a brief kiss on her forehead before the two of them turned to go.
Someone lingered. Viria, the ghost, looking more defined than she ever had before, approached Jared. Her perpetual hood had finally been lowered--short gray hair came up in smoky wisps. It was very clear now that Viria had been an old woman in her life.
If it was possible for a ghost to cry, then tears fell from Viria’s eyes as she, as well, gave Jared Kleinman and Mickey Mell a deep bow.
“Thank you,” she whispered with a smile, before pulling her hood back up and following after her friend.

To Adelio Ferrero and Ricardo Muñoz Suay
Venice, [8] September 1967
Questions to Luis Buñuel for the Milanese journal Cinema Nuovo by Adelio Ferrero and Ricardo Muñoz Suay, September 1967
1) We heard you say once, that the most important men of this century are Freud, Einstein, Lenin and Breton. Could you tell us a bit more about why?
All four have pointed towards and illuminated our path through life, they have enriched our understanding of ourselves, opened up a marvellous and poetic world, a new understanding of the universe, or, in a revolutionary sense, have led us towards a different kind of society that may be less unjust than our own.
2) How present is Spain in your ideological and cultural make-up?
As the earth that feeds and makes a tree grow. Although, culturally speaking, I owe a lot to France, because of my surrealist experience.
3) Eroticism and Catholicism are frequently joined in your films. What relationship do you see between two elements so apparently opposed?
Eroticism without Catholicism is only half the eroticism, because it lacks the sense of sin. I think it was Saint Thomas who said that, even for married couples in the Christian church, copulation was a venial sin.
4) Are you satisfied with Belle de jour? What made you choose Kessel’s novel?
What interested me in the novel was the conflict between the conscience of the heroine and her masochistic compulsions. I am never satisfied with my films.
5) And Simon of the Desert? We saw the film in Venice and liked it a lot. What have you done with the film. Do you intend to complete it?
I wanted to make it into a ten-reel film, but as my producer had already taken it to Venice, I abandoned that idea. Like other films I’ve made for Alatriste, the general public will get to see Simon of the Desert in ten or twelve years’ time.
6) What do you think of the ‘new waves’ in cinema today? Do they seem so ‘new’ to you?
Except for Godard, I don’t see anything new in the new waves. To my mind, the most human, the most vigorous new wave is happening in Brazil.
7) Have you seen The War is Over? What do you think of the film?
I haven’t seen the film. I will one day. I rarely go to the cinema.

Cats Antwerp - 30th March 2017
Ahhhh OK. So, the good bits are very very good indeed! This show tho. For a start, it's not so much a theatre as a building site, that will hopefully soon become a concert hall. Literally, coils of electrical cable on the stairs front of house. And backstage is worse -the place is full of construction dust. It's literally pulling the cast out sick, everyone's coughing and losing their voices. Disastrous. Also they can't use the fly tower tonight, so no Misto rope, plan B heaviside layer. Now I might be imagining things but I think Rumpleteazer WAS in jellicle songs, but she certainly wasn't in the rest of the opening numbers. But mungo and jemima covered by announcing tugger, which worked nicely having various kittens excited to see him. By the time we actually got to mungo and Rumpleteazer, she turned up, and from then on it was all fine. Dane was mungo, Alice Cornwall was Rumpleteazer. Tugger though! This was Nathan Johnson covering for Pepé Munoz, and he was so fluffy and pretty! Slight air of swing about him, not 100% owning the role, but I was more than happy. Jennyanydots - Joanne Lee Martin, loved her bouncy energy! They've had a knack of finding good Gumbie Cats recently, and she's not letting anyone down. Also she has new costumes, her house coat is plush and round, and her tap is so rich and fringes! Still find the new tap painfully dull. Grizabella- ohhhh boy the new costume is not flattering. Jo Ampil is not particularly tall, but that costume is so far from anything remotely glamorous on her. Not kind. Possibly that distracted me, but I didn't connect with her grizabella the way I have done in the past. Bustopher has a red flower again! Jenny's gorgeous in this number, and also I had been afraid of new material in there, fortunately not. Munkus picked up bill in a manner I find very familiar of removing the naughty cat from where he's not meant to be and putting him in place! Old Deuteronomy-the number gave me a chance to really appreciate having tugger back! As for John Ellis, I think the working conditions were really getting to his voice, he was not on top form at all. Also, his young deut top is all lovely and plush velour, but its a good 4" too long and the hem is on a pale flat line, it needs a trim to blend into the trousers too. OK, then when we should have got to Pekes and Pollicles is when things started going wrong. we got right up to the start of "of the awful battle...." when we get a macavity crash, then the weird and tonally clashing bit of loosely paraphrased macavity. Didn't seem necessary. Then "jellicle cats come back, come all" to start the jellicle ball. the energy was wrong for the intro but then the show was all over the place. The ball itself was amazing, all pulled together and again, tugger back was so good! Front of house was so unorganised too, no one controlling people flow at the interval getting up onstage with old Deuteronomy. And audience so slow to come back. Moments of happiness- vocal difficulties but to be fair, under the circumstances, forgivable. Gus. Things got interesting. OK Charlotte Scott as jelly is gorgeous. Tony magill as Gus, got a proper wig back! Not a particularly frail Gus. Had whole ensemble playing about much longer, no costume changes. Pekes and Pollicles. On one hand, pretty fun, on the other, kills Gus. Literally kills any emotional pull of the character. Do not care about him. Not sure why he needed to go off stage to don his trash robe. Nobody wins from this change around apart from the running order making the show Slightly shorter. I was enjoying it as it was going on but the absolute lack of tragedy about his character means I don't care. He's an actor in his 40s not as active as he used to be, not in his 80s frail and ancient. I didn't hate the arrangement, didn't even miss Growltiger, but having a hale and lively Gus, with no reprise of his song, just finish his number and leave, absolute disaster. Skimbleshanks! Always reliable to lift the the mood! Joe Henry was covering, and fun, great ensemble number. Tugger around more than usual. Because - possibly just due to this theatre- only one decoy macavity. Macavity song - Agnes pure as Demeter was skittish and twitchy, the only possible criticism was the she was mumbling her lyrics. most of the audience may not be native English speakers but you still need to enunciate! Charlie Johnson as bomba was gorgeous, all slinky and smokey, lovely moments of catting about through the show too with washing and combing her hair... I don't know if there's new orchestrations, band problems, sound levels or what, but the sound and timing on macavity fight was all off, especially ending up with alonzo standing around waiting his turn. They all fought through, and the throws were magnificent, wonderfully scary macavity. Misto! Love! Shiny and sparkly! I lost count, 29 or 30 spins, long time since I've seen Misto manage that. And he's so bright and cute. And the new jacket has subtly colour changing lights, controlled from the lighting board, and he's covered in AB crystals so all the sparkly rainbows. To the end of the show - again, no flying, vocal difficulties for old Deuteronomy, disconnect from grizabella, wonderful character moments in the ensemble. Mungo and Rumpleteazer touching hands mirroring grizabella and vic! Alonzo and Cassandra beautiful elegant sync, as much as the twins. Sophia mcavoy is a gorgeous Vic, just everything you want. Grace swaby as jemima, hit every Mark, would likely shine more in a show with fewer problems, everyone else rightly adores enric marimon and Aaron hunt as carby and bill. Jak anderson beautiful Admetus, scary mac. Ohhhh, extra music for grizabella has been cut, phew. So there's a really solid cast, rockstar tugger, and new material that fails so hard. And Gus is nerfed. But tugger is back!
