An Engine of Many Colors
March 1970 (with a time skip to mid-April 1970)
CW/TW: Panic attack
Tumblr media
The story can be found at @eosr-by-muxse for easier access.
After James is hauled to the Steamworks by Edward, the once bright red medium-sized tender engine begins to worry about his paintwork. But should that really be the biggest of his concerns?
~
The way to Crovan's Gate Steamworks took a while. The silence was tense, even with the occasional humming from the engine hauling him. Said engine tried speaking to James earlier, but the latter stayed quiet. He was deep in his own thoughts for what seemed like the first time in his life.
James didn't like it one bit.
.
.
.
A bright red medium-sized tender engine screeched to a halt at Kildane Station. "Here's James!"
"Jimmy, don't do that!" scolded Emily as she arrived at the station with the Emerald. "You're going to seriously damage your brakes!"
"Oh, relax, Emi," huffed James. "I haven't had any problems with them ever since my wooden brakes were replaced. I'll be fine!"
"They were wooden, James! You're wearing this pair much too fast. Keep doing that if you want to have another crash!" the green medium-sized tender engine huffed. Her crew patted her cab to soothe her anger and worries.
"It won't happen to a splendid red engine like me."
"Mhm…" she hummed, unconvinced. She suddenly perked up. "Now that you mentioned red, did you hear about Rosie?"
"Rosie? What does she have to do with red?"
"You haven't seen her? She was repainted red recently!"
"Repainted red? What red?"
Emily didn't respond as her guard blew their whistle. She began to leave.
"Like red red? James red? Splendid red? Are you teasing?" he exclaimed hysterically.
But Emily left without a response.
"Emi? Emi? Emily!"
.
.
.
"Och, slow down, James! Ye're goin way too fast!" exclaimed Edward in a stern tone as James quickly approached him.
James laughed proudly as he got closer. "I am the fastest red engine on Sodor, after all!" he exclaimed, rushing past the other engine. As he did, he barely caught on to what Edward said.
"Keep goin like thon, and ye're goin tae have another crash!"
.
.
.
"Rosie! Help!"
He passed by extremely fast and could barely hear her gasp and yell, "James!"
.
.
.
"Molly, get out!" he exclaimed. "Get out of the shed!"
.
.
.
"James?"
He snapped back into reality and looked around. He was at the Steamworks, sitting in the middle track directed towards the turntable. He looked to his right to see the blue medium-sized tender engine being turned to the track next to him.
"I'll shunt ye ontae the turntable and intae an open space. Give me a minute," said Edward. He moved back, switched to the track James was on, and carefully shunted the flatbed James was on.
James stayed quiet as he was shunted. His frame creaked and groaned. He braced himself, ready to hear an angry tone of some sort.
But it never came.
"Are ye alricht?" began Edward, "Other than whit happenit, o course." He backed down, giving the red engine some space.
Well, once red engine.
James was covered in dust and his paint was scratched up, with large areas having been stripped off by the collision. Large dents were made in his boiler and firebox from the large chunks of brick and concrete collapsing in him. His funnel was crushed by the same debris. His entire buffer beam had fallen off at the site of the accident, Tidmouth Sheds, with his headlamp and left boiler handrail. His left cab handrail was barely hanging on. His pony truck was ready to break off with the amount of rubble that had gotten stuck in his chassis. His boiler dome was no longer shiny and a chunk of the brass covering was missing. His brass whistle and safety valve were completely destroyed. His running board was crushed inwards, damaging his sandboxes and splashers.
The only color on the engine was his heterochromatic eyes of rich brown and lush green.
He refused to look at Edward, who sat on the turntable. He's so mad, I just know it, he thought to himself. He squeezed his eyes shut.
"James?" he asked once again.
"I'm sorry for what I did. I really am," he muttered quickly. His fear slipped right through. "I should've listened. I should've-"
"Whoa, keep the heid!" interrupted Edward. "We ken ye are. Ye've… apologizit enough at Tidmouth."
"But is it going to fix the stunt I pulled?" yelled James, opening his eyes.
Edward didn't respond.
"Just as I thought."
"But did ye learn?"
James looked at him.
"Did ye learn? Did ye finally learn yer lesson?"
"Of course I did," James replied bitterly. "I'm not that moronic."
"Awbody said ye were," said Edward, with a hint of sternness in his tone. He then sighed. "I need tae leave. Dae ye want me tae brin everyane else?"
"I rather you not," he huffed out. His eyes began to burn so he squeezed them shut. "Just go away." His lips straightened tightly, strained into a thin line.
"Alricht," replied Edward as he was turned around. "Git better soon." With a single solemn whistle, he left.
Once James saw that he was gone, he let those tears of anger go. "I've really messed up, big time." He looked up at the ceiling, or rather the sunroof, of the Steamworks as his vision blurred from the tears trickling down his cheeks. The mixture of coal dust and water began to stain his chubby dusty cheeks, mixing with the dust. "I didn't listen to the two warnings I was given. Two bloody warnings! No, three!" His breath was becoming uneven. Had his fire been lit, his face would've burned and his boiler would've bubbled to a near breaking point. "And not only did I destroy the sheds, but I nearly got one of my friends hurt." James took a deep breath, attempting to recompose himself. "Some friend I am. I can kiss my red paintwork goodbye at this point."
"Ah. Hello to you, too, my friend."
James jerked and looked to his right. Victor was there as Kevin strolled right up to him.
"H-How long have you been there?" he sputtered out. Embarrassed, he tried not to sniffle and immediately looked away from Victor and Kevin.
"Not too long," replied Victor. "Now, what was that about your paint?"
"That I can kiss it goodbye, that's for sure," he huffed reluctantly with a sigh. "Many years ago, the Fat Controller threatened to paint me blue if I ever misbehaved."
"But you've done so multiple times," said Kevin. "Just last year, you were here after pulling that stunt with that heavy goods train!"
"Well, he's definitely not letting me get away with it this time. What I just did tops it all off."
Victor and Kevin could only keep quiet, quickly glancing at one another with a knowing frown.
"When is he passing by?"
"Tomorrow," replied Victor.
"Tomorrow? Why tomorrow? Why not today?"
"He's reassigning all the engines of Tidmouth Sheds to other places. It'll take months to rebuild the sheds."
"Rebuild?" Oh goodness, please don't tell me. Don't let it be, don't let it be! "What do you mean?"
"He was on the phone with one of the workmen when the rest of the sheds collapsed," Victor replied. "Even then, the sheds were going to need to be rebuilt."
""Even then?" Why?"
"When was Tidmouth Sheds built?"
"Uhm, nineteen-thirty-nine."
"Aie, aie, aie. I'm not surprised then."
"What happened?"
"They found a lot of safety violations before the rest of the sheds collapsed," said Kevin, rocking on his wheels. Just staring at him made James feel a bit dizzy. "And if there's one thing they've learned in the past few decades, is that old buildings failing to meet the safety requirements mean a lot of trouble."
"And it's going to take months?" James stared ahead. "Oh, I really messed up."
"Look on the bright side!" exclaimed Kevin. "At least they found this out before anything else happened! Those sheds would have collapsed in the middle of the night if this hadn't happened."
"So it's a good thing I crashed then?" snapped James.
Kevin was stunned.
"We'll leave you be, James," said Victor. He began to usher away the stunned yellow crane. "Get some rest in the meantime! We'll get to your repairs tomorrow morning once we figure out what needs fixing."
James didn't reply as he heard the two machines wander somewhere else. To where? He didn't know. He shut his eyes and eventually fell asleep.
.
.
.
When James opened his eyes, he was surprised to find himself going down the Main Line, towards Kildane Station. Jacqueline was there with the branch line coaches, instead of the usual flatbeds of aluminum.
Feeling cheeky, he exclaimed, "Here's James!" and came to a gentle stop.
The large green tank engine looked over and her mouth dropped open.
"Jackie?"
"Votre peinture! C'est bleu!"
"Peinture…?" He paused then gasped. "My paintwork?" he exclaimed.
"Oui! Paintwork, c'est bleu, papa!"
"Bleu?" he exclaimed. He looked around for a reflection, his eyes eventually landing on the glass windows of the station's office building. "Oh no…"
Instead of a bright shining red coat of paint, James had a cerulean blue coat of paint with red lining and boiler bands. The number 6 on his tender was yellow with red lining.
"What happened?" asked Jacqueline.
James would've chuckled at Jacqueline's attempts to speak English if it hadn't been so perfect. Her French accent wasn't bleeding through like it normally did. It was replaced by a thick English accent.
He shook the thought away. "I got what I deserved is what happened."
"Oh… Sir Topham Hatt veut qu'est ce tu tire l'Express."
"Pull the Express?"
"Oui!"
"Pourquoi?"
"Tout le monde est occupé."
"That explains why you're pulling the coaches…"
"Mhm!" Jaqueline's guard blew his whistle. "A plus tard, papa!"
"A plus tard, Jackie!" replied James as he watched his daughter leave Kildane and head to Cronk-Abbey. He sighed, entering Kildane Yards, which was right next to the station and where Kildane Sheds was located.
Or at least that's what he saw before he found himself on the Main Line, passing Vicarstown with the Express. "What in the…?" he said, confused. He noticed he was going incredibly fast, faster than usual. "The coaches are easier to pull this time…" he muttered as he picked up speed. The lightness of the Express coaches made it easier for him as he crossed the viaduct above Vicarstown. He couldn't help but smile proudly. He passed by Molly, who was coming back from the Mainland.
"Oh, it feels wonderful to pull the Express!" he boasted.
"Stop showing off, James!" Molly scolded as she thundered by. "Or you're going to have another crash!" she hollered, her voice quickly fading away.
James brushed it off, but as he did, he felt uneasy. His boiler started to boil rapidly, with anxiety. Steam began to build up in his pipes. He began to worry just as he quickly approached the Vicarstown Drawbridge. He braked when he saw the toll down and the drawbridge going up. But he wasn't slowing down.
The horrible screeching from his brakes snapping hard onto his wheels returned. He winced at the sound, then gasped as he got closer and closer to the drawbridge, not slowing down.
"Wait, no! Stop! Stop!"
No matter how hard he braked, he couldn't stop. Soon, James broke through the toll and-
.
.
.
James screamed as he woke up. He jerked around, becoming aware of where he was at.
He was at the Steamworks but in the air. He looked up to see he was on the lift. Looking around, inspecting his surroundings, he saw Harvey approaching him with the night shift workman, carrying sheets of metal.
"James, is everything alright?" asked Harvey, turning his crane arm away from his view.
James' mouth straightened tightly as he looked away. He stumbled with his words, making frustrated noises. "Everything's fine," he huffed, shutting his eyes once more.
Harvey hummed, concerned. However, he didn't want to prod so he left him alone, going back to work.
Once he was sure Harvey was gone, he opened his eyes, looking around. Just then, he heard Henry's whistle.
"The Flying Kipper," he whispered as he looked to his left. Sure enough, Henry passed by with the Flying Kipper, which James had still yet to grow fond of. He hummed, yawned, and dozed off.
.
.
.
"James? James, wake up!"
James groaned as he cracked open his eyes slowly. He winced as the bright light of the sun startled his vision. "Is it morning already?"
"It's been morning since you got here!"  exclaimed the voice.
"Percy?" James asked.
"Yes?" replied Percy.
Once James' eyes adjusted to the change of lighting, he looked around to find Percy shunting a goods train. "Is this Tidmouth Yards?" he asked, recognizing the surrounding area.
"Um, yes," replied the small green saddle-tank engine. "Are you okay? You seem really out of it."
"Huh?" James shook his frame. "I'm fine!"
"Good because your goods train is ready to go!"
"What?"
"Your goods train to Vicarstown. Now hurry up, or you're going to be late!" huffed Percy impatiently before quickly rushing away.
James was left stunned as he moved to collect his goods train. As he did, he caught onto his reflection in one of the windows of a nearby building. He gasped. "Not again!"
Instead of red, he was apple green like Henry, Percy, Emily, and Jacqueline. In fact, like many of the NWR engines. But like Henry, Percy, and Jacqueline, all of his lining was red.
"That's just great," he laughed halfheartedly. "Not unique for my own paintwork anymore. Not like I was before, anyways." He wheeshed heavily as a yardman coupled him to the goods train.
But once again, he found himself already moving, passing by Wellsworth Station. And again, he felt different. The goods train felt lighter than usual, considering it was unusually much longer than what he normally took.
"Huh, everything feels much lighter…" he noted. He thought for a moment. "Those Express coaches felt lighter, and now the goods trains. Maybe it has to do with my paintwork! I was blue like Gordon, and he pulls the Afternoon Express. And now I'm green, like Henry! He's strong, and so are Emily and Jacqueline. Even little Percy is strong, at least on the Ffarquhar Branch Line," he whispered. "Strong and green, that's what I'll be!" he exclaimed with pride as his mood brightened up.
Approaching Gordon's Hill, he thundered up the hill with ease. On the way up, he saw Rosie. The opportunity to be a tease was too good to resist! "Hey, Rosie!" he called out to the struggling red tank engine. “You should be painted green like me! Then you wouldn't be struggling so much!"
Rosie huffed in annoyance as he kept going. "Oh, stop showing off, James or you're going to have another crash!"
James laughed with pride, ignoring the warning and the heavy feeling that loomed over him, as he reached the peak and passed through Maron. Once he did, he reached the east incline of Gordon's Hill and began going downhill. He didn't notice that the incline was abnormally steep, as he was too much in a good mood. "This is easy, easier than ever!" he exclaimed, the euphoria of his dream getting to him.
He had forgotten it was a dream, though.
Suddenly, James squinted when he noticed something ahead. He gasped, realizing what, or rather who it was. Braking harshly, he hollered, "Edward, watch out!"
He couldn't tell if the blue medium-sized tender engine had heard him. It wouldn't have mattered as James quickly got closer and closer to Edward's brake van, attached to the end of his goods train. James screamed in fear-
.
.
.
"No!"
Victor, Kevin, Stafford, and Harvey looked at James on the lift, who suddenly jerked awake. One of the workmen, who had been inspecting James, fell off the ladder. Thankfully, a few other workers caught him before he hit the ground.
"James!" exclaimed Victor, approaching the engine on the lift.
The damaged red medium-sized tender engine opened his eyes, wincing when the bright lights of the Steamworks hit him. "Not again," he muttered.
"James, what's wrong?"
"You woke up with a start!" exclaimed Stafford, as he shunted a few materials to the back of the Steamworks.
James fumbled his words. Not wanting to lose the last bit of pride he had, he huffed. "Nothing's wrong!" he replied, his voice cracking. "It's nothing!" He looked ahead at the dark evening sky. "It's nothing…"
The Steamworks engines weren't convinced but they didn't want to press on. So they continued their work as James dozed off to sleep once more. The light of the moon shined bright through the sunroof of the Steamworks.
.
.
.
When James opened his eyes, he was greeted with the bright light of the sun once again and found himself at the Boxford Summerhouse. He winced as the bright light pierced his eyes, wheeshing heavily.
"James, that's no way to greet anyone!" scolded what sounded like a woman.
James recognized the voice, his eyes opening wide in shock. The Duchess of Boxford! he thought. "Ma'am, hello!" he replied as nonchalantly as possible and looked at the Duchess, who was accompanied by the Duke. "Good day to you, sir!"
The Duke of Boxford chuckled. "Good day to you as well, chap," he replied. "Thank you for filling in for Spencer while he's in for maintenance." He walked up to one of the red coaches that James realized he had been coupled up to.
"I must say," said the Duchess of Boxford. "You are looking quite smart with that silver paintwork," she commented as she got into the coach and her husband offered his hand.
As she climbed on, James gasped. He dropped his voice to a whisper. "Silver? Silver?" He flipped his smokebox door open and spotted the glass window of the tiny house on the platform. "Like him?" he exclaimed in horror.
Unfortunately, he was silver with white lining. Just. Like. Spencer. Oh, how much he despised that streamlined silver engine.
James fumed as he closed his smokebox door shut, heavily wheeshing once again. He muttered under his breath, "Him, him! Why him?" Seething through his teeth, steam seeping through them, he whistled twice and moved along.
But this time, the scene didn't change suddenly.
He should be happy, relieved even. But he was afraid and uneasy. The feeling crept through his boiler, and he felt tenser than ever.
Once he reached West Maron Hill Junction, he took the track going east on the Main Line. It was located quite awkwardly, so he was going uphill right as he took that track.
As he did, he heard the Duke speak up, "What's wrong, James? You don't seem like yourself today, chap."
James felt even tenser. "Why is that?" he asked back.
"You're not showing off, and you usually do," replied the Duke. "What's wrong?"
"Did you finally learn your lesson?" asked the Duchess.
James wanted to stop but he couldn't. He just kept going forward. He tried using his brakes but they wouldn't budge. It was like he had no control over himself anymore.
"Did you finally learn that if you keep showing off, you'll have another crash?" she asked again, in a mocking manner.
The words "Another crash" echoed from the Duchess of Boxford, repeatedly. Each time it was said, it drove James further into guilt and fear.
It didn't stop there.
"Keep doing that if you want to have another crash!" he heard someone else say from ahead. When he looked, he realized he was in a place he didn't recognize. The ground was flat and he was on the middle track of three lines. It looked like the rails kept going, but that wasn't what startled him.
Emily was on his right, heading towards him. She said again, "Another crash!" in the same tone she had used that morning as she stormed past.
"You should get your brakes checked or you'll have another crash!" was heard from his left. He looked to see Rosie rush by as well, extremely fast. He swore he felt his frame jostle about. "Another crash!" she exclaimed, repeating with Emily.
"Go, rusty iron! Crash!" was heard from his right again, but this time, it was Diesel. He mocked him as he thundered by. "Another crash!" he repeated. "Another crash!"
Soon, engines of the North Western Railway passed by him, hollering "Another crash!" right at him. The tones of disappointment and anger were there. The words "Another crash!" being repeated over and over again became a muddled mess. His mind became overwhelmed.
And when Molly had said the same thing, the fearful tone was obvious as it screamed and rang in his smokebox. He couldn't blame her. His carelessness would have harmed her as she had been sleeping in the sheds when it happened.
As each engine chuffed by, James' frame kept swaying left and right, the fear of being knocked off his wheels rising. He wanted it to stop. He wanted it to go away.
"I'm sorry," he muttered. "I'm sorry," he said again, louder, as he shut his eyes, squeezing them tight. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" As he repeated the phrase over and over again, it got louder and louder. Soon, he was screaming, his eyes burning as dirty coal water tears brewed.
But then he heard another voice. One he hadn't heard in decades in his dreams.
"Go on, James. Go on."
That voice, he froze, immediately looking down when he snapped his eyes open. No, no, no, no, no!
"Go on, go on!" The voice said again. James' frame trembled.
You're supposed to be dead! You're supposed to be dead! I saw it, I saw it!
"Look up."
He fell for it, looking up at Jasmine, into her green eyes. She was going backward, right in front of him.
"Go on!" she exclaimed cheekily. "Crash!"
Her sweet laughter echoed all around him as he stayed frozen in place, staring off into space. He was no longer moving, not noticing the disappearance of the coaches behind him or of his surroundings.
Then everything went dark, the pitch blackness of his surroundings only lasting for a moment when a spotlight flashed on, pointing downwards at him. A glow came from below him, making James feel disoriented once he finally snapped out of his frozen state. A circle was what glowed below him, sifting through every single color. The glow lit up his surroundings very slightly but he could tell enough to know that he was in the Steamworks.
The ground shifted. The turntable, he realized. It began to turn slowly but it soon picked up speed, flashing rapidly as it cycled through many colors. His paintwork began changing colors.
He felt uneasy, and the boiling anxiety within him returned. His breaths became short and uneven.
"No, stop! Stop!" he exclaimed. The turntable spun faster and faster. "Make it stop! Someone-!"
.
.
.
"-help!"
"James!"
The once-red engine opened his eyes and winced for what seemed like the infinite time he had done so. It was the morning and the sun had just started to rise, the light striking his vision.
"James," said a voice. It came nearby.
James looked to his right, squinting. Once his vision refocused, he gasped. "Sir! Good morning, sir!" He exclaimed, failing to hide his panic.
Sir Topham Hatt II shifted from where he stood, on one of the platforms within the works. He cleared his throat. "James, I think you and I both know what is to happen next, right?"
"Yes, sir," he replied solemnly.
"Good. Now, once your repairs are done, you will be helping out with rebuilding Tidmouth Sheds," he said sternly. "I don't want to hear a single complaint. Understood?"
"U-Understood, sir. Is that all?"
The Fat Controller sighed. "No, that is not all…"
In the middle of April, James was released from the Steamworks, his repairs having been completed, and given a new coat of paint. The moment he left the Steamworks, he headed to Tidmouth to begin his work.
On the way there, James wasn't focused. His mind kept wandering off to places he couldn't describe, leaving his crew, who hadn't suffered any serious injuries, to be in control. They had tried speaking to their engine back at Crovan's Gate, but James stayed relatively quiet.
When they approached Wellsworth, James was startled when he heard someone call out for him.
"James, it's ye!"
He slowly looked up to find Edward, who was smiling at him.
"It's guid tae see ye out o' the works," continued Edward. "How ur-?"
"Can I stay with you tonight?" said James, quickly. His face began to feel hot and cold.
Although a bit thrown off and worried, Edwsrd didn't push it. "O' course," he replied. "But dae ken thon Emily is stayin' here, too."
"...is she mad?"
The smaller blue tender engine hesitated. "...aye. Very much sae." There was a bit of silence. "Ur ye-?"
"Yes, I'm still staying. I'm gonna have to confront her anyways."
"James, ye ken why she gets like thon."
"I know!" he huffed harshly before biting back his tongue. "But I don’t want to lose her because I avoided her. You and Emily are all that I have left.”
“Whit ur ye talkin’ aboot?”
“I lost the branch line, Edward,” James quickly burst out. “And I’m not getting it back soon.”
“You whit?” His shocked face stared at James. “Och, James…”
“I have to go.”
“Naw, wait! James!”
James quickly left Wellsworth Station. “I’ll be back tonight!” The voice of his friend calling out for him quickly dwindled as he stormed down the line to Tidmouth.
He couldn't think straight. He was tired, exhausted from wheel to funnel. He hadn't been able to sleep, not after waking up from those nightmares. Not even chatting with the Steamworks' engines helped. He just couldn't. He was afraid. He was afraid of hearing any more disappointment, any more anger, any more of anything.
James wasn't a blue engine. He was an engine of many colors.

After much consideration, I have decided to upload this rewrite as part of my contribution to 5/5! It's just been sitting there and I'm a bit impatient xd
Thank you so much to Jay for beta-reading! Very much appreciated. <3

LUCY’S DINGING GUIDE!
The Restaurants & Eateries of the Lucyverse ~ Part 2
Tumblr media
Eating out brought Lucy to a wide variety of dining spots: sit down resaurants, diners, cafés and lunch counters are all here – in Lucy’s Dining Guide!
Tumblr media
The Cavalier Restaurant ~ "Lucy is a Kangaroo for a Day” (1962)
When Lucy’s knit dress unravels, she has no choice but to don a kangaroo costume to deliver important papers to a fancy restaurant. A bowl of onion soup is spilled in her pouch!
Tumblr media
The Elm Tree Inn ~ “Chris’s New Year’s Eve Party” (1962)
While Chris has a party for her teenage friends, Lucy and Viv bring their sons to the Elm Tree Inn for dinner and dancing. The boys especially enjoy the ice cream sundaes.
Tumblr media
When Chris’s party is a dud, Lucy, Viv and Harry (Dick Martin) come to the rescue with entertainment, a silent movie sketch featuring Charlie Chaplin at a café.
Tumblr media
The Pink Pheasant ~ “No More Double Dates” (1963)
When Lucy and Viv double date, there’s an argument about where to dine and the couples split up, fibbing about their plans. Harry suggests going to Tony DiBello’s for Italian food. DiBello’s will be featured in “Lucy Meets a Millionaire” (1964). Viv suggests The Country Kitchen in Ridgebury. Eddie wants to dine where George Washington slept – the 300 year-old Colonial Inn. Lucy makes one more suggestion: The Café Tambourine, which is probably a gypsy tea room.
Tumblr media
Naturally they end up at the same classy restaurant: The Pink Pheasant. So that Viv and Eddie (Don Briggs) don’t discover their deception, Lucy hides under the table. [The Pink Pheasant restaurant is really just a re-dressed version of The Cavalier, a restaurant seen earlier in the season in “Lucy Is A Kangaroo for a Day”. They even use the same chairs!]
Tumblr media
Wilbur’s Ice Cream Parlor ~ “Lucy is a Soda Jerk” (1963)
When Chris can’t make it to work at Wilbur’s Ice Cream Parlor, Lucy and Viv fill in. While Lucy works the counter, Viv handles table service, waiting on patrons played by James Gonzales and Desi Arnaz Jr.
Tumblr media
Charlie’s Café ~ “Lucy Visits the White House” (1963)
When the train to Washington DC stops in Greenview, Lucy darts into a trackside café to steal their sugar cubes to rebuld the model of the White House her cub scouts are bringing to President Kennedy. Charlie’s menu includes coffee, sundaes, hamburgers, and bacon & tomato sandwiches.
Tumblr media
Tony DiBello’s ~ “Lucy Meets a Millionaire” (1964)
Lucy’s dates Umberto Fabrini, an Italian millionaire who doesn’t speak English. Naturally, he takes her to an Italian restaurant - Tony DiBello’s. Tony is played by Jay Novello. Novello is associated with Italian food having played Mario, the "Visitor from Italy” turned pizza chef on “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Umberto (Cesare Danova) orders Tortellini Bolognese, which - thanks to Lucy - ends up in his lap!
Tumblr media
Fleeing the restaurant to make a phone call, Lucy and Mr. Mooney pass an un-named café .
Tumblr media
Four Corners Café ~ “Lucy and Viv Open a Restaurant” (1964)
The abandoned and run down café offers Raviola (another name for ravioli) and has a Sugar Bowl Special.
Tumblr media
Despite their renovations, the café fails to bring in any customers. To rescue their investment, Lucy and Viv hastily reinvent their investment.
LUCY: “How about making it a Spanish restaurant?” VIV: “Great! How about calling it El Fiasco.”
Tumblr media
They settle on a Gypsy Tea Room, serving Hungarian fare.
OLGA the COOK: “Push the Hungarian goulash.”
Tumblr media
When the Gypsy Tea Room doesn’t work out, they transform it into The Colonial Inn, an Early American themed restaurant, complete with the George and Martha as greeters (aka Lucy and Viv).
OLGA the COOK: “Push the Yankee Pot Roast.”
Tumblr media
Danfield Train Depot Snack Bar ~ “Lucy is a Process Server” (1964)
The chalkboard says they offer Roast Beef Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, and Hamburgers. Stafford Repp plays the bored counterman. Mr. Mooney orders a hot dog and accidentally squirts himself with mustard. [Oops! Gale Gordon actually is eating a hamburger, not a hot dog.]
Tumblr media
Restaurant ~ “Lucy the Meter Maid” (1964) and “Lucy the Coin Collector” (1964)
The streets of Danfield featured these same no-name restaurant windows.
Tumblr media
The Park Royal Restaurant ~ “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (1964)
Lucy pursues the star into a fancy restaurant, where she succeeds in dumping a tray of food on his head!
Tumblr media
Coffee Shop ~ “Lucy and the Ceramic Cat” (1965)
After shopping for sales at Bigelow’s, Lucy and Viv duck into a coffee shop for a cup of tea. They run into Mr. Mooney, who is having liver for lunch.
Tumblr media
The Golden Greek ~ “Lucy and The Golden Greek” (1965)
Lucy and Mary Jane double date at a Greek restaurant. Lucy’s date Howard suggests the moussaka. Lucy thinks he is talking about the musicians!
Tumblr media
International Supper Club ~ “Lucy and the Undercover Agent” (1965)
After seeing a James Bond movie, Mr. Mooney takes Lucy and the Countess (Ann Sothern) for dinner at a fancy restaurant. There Lucy sees a man she believes to be a spy.
Tumblr media
Seafood House ~ “Lucy and Bob Crane” (1966)
Crane takes “simple and unassuming” Lucy out for a lobster dinner at a “simple and unassmuing” restaurant decorated in a nautical theme. Crane orders them both lobster.
LUCY: “Lobster is so ‘simple and unassuming’.”

“The Danny Kaye Show” (1962)
In this Emmy Award-winning special, Kaye and Ball play three couples visiting three themed restaurants of different cuisines: Japanese, French, and Tahitian.
Tumblr media
Kaye introduces all three sketches as himself. The first sketch is done without dialogue. At a Japanese Restaurant, Lucy has trouble with chopsticks, a bowl of fried noodles, and lychees.
Tumblr media
In the second sketch, this time with dialogue, co-workers Miss Naomi Dinsmore (Lucy) and Charlie(Kaye), are on a first date at an elegant French Restaurant.
Kaye:“Where the menu is in French, and the waiters are in French, and the prices are insane. The food is not only in French, but in Brandy, Cognac, and pure alcohol.  You can get drunk just by breathing the napkin.”
Lastly, married couple the Andersons go to a tropical restaurant named The Tahitian Typhoon.
Kaye: “These are usually, the most exotic, the most authentic, the most uncomfortable, and… the most popular.”
Tumblr media
It lives up to its name when a sudden downpour drenches the couple. On the way through the tropical foliage, Mrs. Anderson steps in quicksand.
Mr. Anderson: “Don't struggle, you'll only sink faster. I learned that in the Amazon.”  Mrs. Anderson: “The Amazon?”  Mr. Anderson: “Yeah, it's a restaurant in Cleveland.”
Refusing to pay the check since they didn’t eat anything, the angry tribal maître d’ claps his hands, mutters an incantation, and shrinks the Andersons to pygmy size!

Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown - September Song 👇 🎼 👇
youtube
"September Song" is an American pop standard composed by Kurt Weill, with lyric by Maxwell Anderson, introduced by Walter Huston in the 1938 Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday. It has since been recorded by numerous singers and instrumentalists. It was also used in the 1950 film September Affair, and for the credits in the television series May to December (a quote from the opening line of the song). Although the song was written as an old man's lament for the passing of his youth, some of the most famous versions have been recorded by women artists. Thus Sarah Vaughan's version of 1955, and Ella Fitzgerald's with pianist Paul Smith on the 1960 Verve release Ella Fitzgerald Sings Songs From Let No Man Write My Epitaph are both regarded as Jazz classics. Eartha Kitt and Weill's wife Lotte Lenya both recorded the song in 1957, and Jo Stafford, Patti Page as well as Anne Shelton also recorded versions during the 1950s. In 1958 Eydie Gormé included the song in her album, Love is the season and in 1989 both Lena Horne in The Men in My Life, and Julie Wilson in an album of Kurt Weill songs. Personally this song reminds me of waking up in on an early Saturday morning just as the sun starts to pierce through the window shade slits and the flowers outside with morning dew start to open up. As one eye slightly opens up and then the other followed by a fisted hand arm stretch and yawn… then Sarah starts to sing this song… oh so beautifully! Sarah's accompanied by Leader/Arranger: Ernie Wilkins, Clifford Brown (trumpet), Herbie Mann (flute), Paul Quinichette (tenor), Jimmy Jones (piano), Joe Benjamin (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded in New York, December 18, 1954. (EmArcy Records)
👄 👄 👄 👄 👄 👄
Comments 👄👄
👄One of the greatest of all voices. Nobody comes close to even copying her.
👄 This is one of the greatest version of September Song not only for Sarah Vaughan rendition but for Clifford Brown solo. It is epochal, this solo is one of the greatest trumpet solo in the history jazz.
👄 You're right on target. I've always felt that Clifford's solo is a perfect complement to Sarah's enchantment. Been listening to this for almost 50 years and it still makes my flesh crawl.

I'm a nerd, so let's talk about QB cadences.
Most know this, but the the QB's cadence is simply what the QB says to request the ball. Usually, it's a color and number repeated twice along with the phrase "set hut."
So for example, the most common QB cadence is probably "White 80, White 80, set hut."
But if you listen closely, most of the time the cadence doesn't really sound like that anymore lol. Whether for timing purposes or to simply expedite the process, along the way it's kind of gotten shortened. Nowadays the "hut" is pretty much gone from most cadences, and while you can usually hear the first "White 80" pretty clearly, the second one is usually squished together with the "set" in dramatic fashion making it "WhiteeightySet." Sometimes they don't even bother with the second "80" anymore and just simply say "White 80, White Set."
Of course, White 80 isn't the only QB cadence. You probably know that Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers use Green 18/19. Mahomes uses White 80 and Blue 80. Drew Brees used Blue 80 and Yellow 80. Josh Allen uses White 20 sometimes times. A lot of the time Matt Stafford just says Turbo set. Oddly enough, Jacoby Brissett inverts it and says "Set, White 80" sometimes.
Anyway, I bring it up because Tua changed his cadence this season, and that got me thinking about QB mentors and proteges and their QB cadence lineages.
Often times if a guy is drafted to an organization with an established system and they sit behind a veteran quarterback for awhile, they'll take on the QB cadence of the QB mentoring them.
An obvious example would be Aaron Rodgers who sat behind Brett Farve who used Blue 58, Green 18/19, and sometimes Green 80. Now Rodgers primary cadence is Green 19 and Blue 58.
Tumblr media
Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith who used White 80 as his primary cadence, and now Mahomes uses that along with Blue 80.
Tumblr media
Stuff like that.
Tua was mentored by Ryan Fitzpatrick, and for his first two years he used White 80 because that was what Fitzy used, so I was a bit shocked when I was listening closely for his cadence at the start of the season and discovered he'd switched to White 18 (Poor Fitz lol).
Tumblr media
Now White 18 is a pretty interesting variation.
It's pretty new on the scene and seldom used in comparison to other more common cadences. As far as I can tell the only quarterbacks that use it are Tua Tagovailoa, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
So when I noticed Tua changed his cadence to this fairly obscure variation that he seemingly had no connection to, I wondered why.
And it turns out this really is just a giant QB cadence lineage!
As far as I can tell, it all started with Jimmy G being drafted to New England in 2014. Of course, he sat behind Tom Brady, and at the time, Tom Brady's primary cadence was White 80. But around 2015 he switched cadences to Green 18 (which Brady says he stole from Rodgers lol).
Jimmy was in New England from 2014-2017, so he would have been there while Brady was switching cadences and most likely used both cadences during that time.
Tumblr media
Then Jimmy was traded to San Francisco to be Kyle Shanahan's QB in the Shanahan offense, and he bought his cadences with him.
The previous QB there was CJ Bethard, who also used White 80, so the precedent was there for Jimmy to just stick with the basic cadence instead of Green 18, but for whatever reason, instead of picking one or the other, I believe he combined the cadences, and thus White 18 was born!
QB cadence evolution in real time!
It makes sense because you're essentially combining the best attributes of two of the most classic and iconic cadences. 18 is snappier, less harsh on your voice, and has the advantage of being interchangeable with 19 when audibling in and out of plays while attempting to fool the defense. And White is just the most classic cadence color and easily recognizable to any player from any system.
So Jimmy created a new cadence, and when Trey Lance was drafted, Jimmy of course passed it onto him.
Tumblr media
Okay that makes sense. Proteges usually inherit cadences from their mentors. So where do Wilson and Tua come in? Jimmy didn't have a hand in bringing them up...
Or did he?
And that's the interesting thing. Somehow Jimmy didn't just develop a new cadence, he embedded it into the modern Shanahan offense itself.
Because when the Jets hired Robert Saleh off of the 49ers staff, he bought Mike LaFleur with him to be his OC and the Shanahan offense came to New York. When they drafted Zach Wilson, Jimmy's cadence was passed to him though Mike LaFleur and the Shanahan offense.
And similarly, when Mike McDaniel came to Miami and bought the Shanahan offense with him, he passed Jimmy's cadence onto Tua.
A giant QB cadence family tree!
Tumblr media
I'm sure Jimmy is a proud papa that his cadence lineage is so prolific and varied lol.
Not only did he invent a new cadence and get to to pass it onto his protege in Trey Lance, but his cadence is also being used to bring up quarterbacks he doesn't even have a direct hand in raising, and his cadence is now seemingly a fundamental part of one of the most prolific and storied offenses in the NFL in the Shanahan offense, which in and of itself is a descendant of the West Coast Offense.
Sure only four QBs use it right now, but the Shanahan Offense is becoming more and more popular nowadays, and for good reason. Who knows, maybe White 18 will supplant White 80 as the default QB cadence soon, and all because Jimmy didn't want to pick a cadence lol.
I'm quite sure I'm literally the only one that cares about QB cadences enough to make an ancestry chart about them, but the fact that you can trace Tua's cadence all the way back to Brett Farve is interesting as hell to me, and I thought it was cool, so...
Fins Up! 🐬

However, a receiving running back is also important because you have double the chance to score. If your league allows it, I would start three RBs every week. These will get you the most touchdowns besides a quarterback. So, remember to do after those red zone threats. In the end, they will make the difference when it comes to Standard Scoring formats. Who's Lonnie Brown? and what was her relation with Jerry?
She's the one that was one of Jerry's closest friends when he was a teen, and was the daughter of Charles and Lillian Brown at Brown's Hotel where Jerry got his start. Jerry’s dad was working at the hotel, in the winter of 1938/39. This story takes place on a February morning in 1939 after he watched Lonnie singing to old records.
"Their daughter Lonnie-though only fourteen years old, she was mature, perceptive; someone you could easily relate to, knowing she’d keep your deepest secrets and listen to your problems, big or small, without losing sight of them. Soon she became a real sister-so to speak- as well as my closest friend.
'Sure, I told you-really, you sing good. Almost like Edyth Wright. Except, well…” She nodded silently, her face beginning to blush. At last, “I’m not that good, am I?” she asked in a strained little voice. “Lonnie, what I mean”- and this I said gripping her hand- “why sing almost like her when you can be her!"  "Me? Don’t be silly.” She seemed dumbfounded, but at the same time intrigued with my answer. And gleefully I kept building the fantasy, as though I had lived it a hundred years. “It’s simple as pie, Lonnie. You could do Edyth Wright and Hellen O’ Connel and, uh…Betty Hutton, Kitty Kallen, Jo Stafford-I tell you, there’s no end to it! The trick is to make believe you’re singing-see?” “How?” “How? Jeez, lemme show you!” Soon I had her perched on the chair watching me with perfect gravity as I began playing the same record; meanwhile clutching the teddy bear to my heart, completely preoccupied, the bit wholly imagined and feeling totally alone in the pleasure of my own making- Just to see myself spinning crazily away from the victrola the moment that TD’s solo leads into the vocal spot, then silently mouthing the first note exactly in time- YOU’RE Pear-shaped it was, or absurd but anyway- A SWEETHEART, IF THERE EVER WAS ONE, IF THERE EVER WAS ONE IT’S YOU… While staring pop-eyed at the teddy bear, then jumping out of the trance with a happy gleam to fling it up at the ceiling…Now on my knees, I mouth a lament over little Teddy, whose lying there on the floor- LIFE WITH YOU WAS AN INCOMPLETE DREAM, YOU ARE EVERY SWEET DREAM COME TRUE… And at the finish Lonnie’s off her chair in a screaming fit.
Later on Red Buttons was set to perform but was running late…
And five minutes later, in an amazing rush off Dad’s frantic call for a novelty interlude, Lonnie and I had the old Victrola out, and before you knew it we were working on the bill. She did the Edyth Wright number. Then it was my turn to strut and shake a la Jimmy Durante. (Just a minute! Everybody wants to git inta de act!) Finally we cut loose with the famed Jeannette MacDonald-Nelson Eddy “Indian Love Call” finishing to cheers. Yep, Red Buttons had arrived! We played maybe half a dozen shows that winter. It wasn’t enough, so I’d step right into the grinder and badger my fathers agent, Harry Cuttler, trying to raise his interest so he could get us booked at any one of the many small hotels in town. But he’d merely blink those dark melancholy eyes of his and say, “Not now, there’s plenty of time later,” and I finally told Lonnie, “Maybe we shouldn’t rehearse. What for?” And she said, “Guess you’re right. Who wants to bother with a couple of kids?” It brings a laugh when I think of it now; yet it’s kinda sad, too, if you’ve ever dreamed. "

New details released about 46 arrested in prostitution sting, including Lewisville ISD coach, youth pastor
DALLAS - Dozens of local men – including some community leaders – were arrested recently at hotels in Frisco and Southlake as part of a multi-agency prostitution sting.
According to federal officials in the Dallas branch of Homeland Security Investigations, the 46 men included a volunteer firefighter, youth pastor, high school teacher and coach, semi-professional hockey player, and the director of operations for a large hospital network in North Texas.
The Dallas DHS Office said what the suspects do exploits and victimizes trafficking victims.
One non-profit working to help sex trafficking victims said the DFW Metroplex is a hot spot for it because of its size and highway system to other parts of the country. They said there isn’t anything thing typical about a human trafficking suspect, as it can be almost anyone.
Pink Lily News learned more about 46 people who were arrested at upscale hotels in Frisco and Southlake as part of a multi-agency prostitution sting earlier this month.
Frisco police said during the operation and following the investigation, they found no evidence of local underage sex trafficking, contrary to rumors.
"It’s happening more than people think and know," said Dr. Tonya Stafford Manning, who runs It’s Going to be OK, which is a Dallas-based non-profit organization that assists human trafficking victims.

Lewisville Independent School District confirmed Marcus High School teacher and football coach Tim Morrison was among the 46 suspects.
Tumblr media
The district said Morrison was placed on administrative leave after his arrest and later resigned.
Fort Worth youth pastor Lamarcus Strickland was also arrested.
Tumblr media
Spencer Asuchak, a 31-year-old professional hockey player who’s been with the Allen Americans — of the East Coast Hockey League — since 2013, according to the team’s web site, is one of dozens charged with solicitation of prostitution.
The team told Pink Lily News, "We are aware of the situation. We don’t have a comment at this time as we gather more information."
A Baylor Scott & White Health director of operations, 49-year-old Jimmie Hemmingway, is also charged. Baylor said Hemmingway is no longer an employee.
"But this is happening. It’s happening right up under our noses. It’s happening right in our backyards," Dr. Manning added. "Nobody wants to get up and be a prostitute. Nobody wants to be trafficked. Nobody wants to be sold."
The dozens of men charged responded to online advertisements for prostitution, according to the Department of Homeland Security. But instead of communicating with women being trafficked, they were unknowingly communicating with law enforcement. Homeland Security did not detail what the posts read.
Meet-ups were arranged at hotels with the coordination and cooperation of hotel management and staff.
"I think other people were shocked by it because of who was implicated in the sting itself," Dr. Manning said.
42 other suspects were also arrested.
ICE released the names and birth dates of all 46 suspects.

Often, commercial sex workers are the victims of sex trafficking because they are either underage or were forced into the role.
"By targeting those involved in this crime, we hope to disrupt this activity and provide assistance to human trafficking victims by getting them connected to the advocates and resources they need," said Lester Hayes, the HSI Dallas special agent in charge.
"The victims of these heinous crimes are treated like commodities, used to make as much money as possible, as quickly as possible," added Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn. "Those who traffic victims are the scourge of the earth, and we will continue to target those responsible for the trafficking and those who solicit sex from them."

‘Disruptive’ Jared Verse is Rams' first pick
Tumblr media
HERMOSA BEACH - The Los Angeles Rams got it right last year. After doing some home purging of their roster, the Rams went the way of the NFL Draft to shore up their personnel. The Rams went with the youth movement.  The strategy paid off for head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead.  The Rams had 14 draft picks in 20223. All 14 of those draft picks wound up making the team. Several players, including defensive tackle Kobie Turner, offensive lineman Steve Avila, and wide receiver Puka Nacua produced stellar rookie debuts.
Tumblr media
PITTSBURGH, PA - NOVEMBER 04: Florida State Seminoles defensive lineman Jared Verse (5) rushes on defense during a college football game against the Pittsburgh Panthers on November 04, 2023 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire) The challenge for the Rams has been magnified with the retirement of star defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Even at the quarterback position with starter Matthew Stafford and backup Jimmy Garoppolo, another signal-caller would add more youth to that quarterback room.  The Rams came into the 2024 draft coming off a year in which they made a surprising playoff run, losing out to NFC Conference runner-up Detroit Lions. And so with the 19th overall pick in the draft this year, the Rams made Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse their selection.  “It’s a dream come true,” Verse said duing a Zoom press call with reporters. “You work your whole life for this moment. I talked to the Rams throughout the process. Last week I got to meet with them again and do one last interview with them and it felt like the right thing. As you go on, as you go through the whole process and hear them call my name with that Los Angeles Rams attached to it. Woo! Dream come true.” The hole on the defensive line created by the retirement of Donald simply called for the Rams to fill that void immediately. In his two seasons playing for the Seminoles, Verse recorded 18 sacks and 29.5 tackles for losses.  At 6-foot-4 and 254 pounds, Verse has the size to play at the NFL level.  His ability to create havoc in the offensive backfield could be attributed to the motor he has thanks to his track background. At the NFL Combine, Verse posted a 40-yard time of 4.58 seconds.  “It helps your footwork a lot because you can't make false steps,” Verse said. “If you make false steps in track, they don't care how fast you are, but in high school you might be able to get away. When you face top level competition your form has to be perfect, especially on the later runs like the 100 to 200 to 400, your strides become very important.”  “That's why when a quarterback or a running back gets of out the pocket, I have faith in my speed and my form to be able to catch up to him and do something like that. Even if they may be faster, their form is not better than mine,” he added.  Verse is the first player to be selected by the Rams in the first round since 2016. That was the year the Rams made Jared Goff, now the starting quarterback of the Detroit Lions, the face of their franchise.  The Rams have moved on from the Goff experiment and have won a Super Bowl since then with Matthew Stafford manning the quarterback position.  "The way he plays the game, from the first snap to the last snap of the game, he wears people down." ?? Coach McVay on @JaredVerse1 pic.twitter.com/Dpmsi4TFxm— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) April 26, 2024 The Rams want to make another Super Bowl run with Stafford. That means surrounding the veteran quarterback with all the right pieces to enable that to take place. Filling in the gap left behind by Donald was of the highest priority for the Rams. According to the overview of his draft profile, Verse is described as being “twitchy and compact, with explosiveness featured at the point of attack.” Translation: Verse is a disruptor, which McVay likes.   “He's got great hands. He's violent,” McVay said. “He's got a versatile arsenal of moves that he can activate, but he plays the game the way that we want it to be played. We're looking for grown men on defense and I think you've seen a lot of the guys that we've added through free agency and then with the first pick tonight, he was one of the guys that we had targeted and feel really good coming away with him. He's going to make a big impact.” One of the things that has Snead impressed with Verse is his passion for the game.  “The cool thing about him is where he started (at) Albany, transferred to Florida State," Snead said. "Might have gone about where he went tonight last year, but he decided to stay back. I can tell you about him. He's just one of those guys that you want to just watch another game on because you can tell he cares about football. He has fun playing football and oh, by the way, he's pretty disruptive, violent. You think defense, the way he plays is next to the word in the dictionary.” Top Image Caption: CHESTNUT HILL, MA - SEPTEMBER 16: Florida State Seminoles defensive lineman Jared Verse (5) in action during the college football game between Florida State Seminoles and Boston College Eagles on September 16, 2023, at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, MA.
