Kelly Freas - "The Jerry's" Artarama Catalog Cover Original Art (1996)
"My second catalog cover for Jerry's Artarama. Once again, the image of my wife made the cover a success. However, she is upstaged this time by the cover of the catalogue her man is reading -- my previous handiwork for the same company! It's a great source of satisfaction to be allowed to quote from oneself."

My entry for this year's self portrait contest, "At Least One of Us Is Getting Some Sleep" - if Dorian Grey's portrait could take on his aging, maybe my self-portrait can take up some of the slack on my sleep schedule. (In retrospect, would've been easier to work from a picture of me with my eyes closed rather than painting with one eye open at a time, but ah well).
Click the link above to vote in the public voting round of the contest (doesn't have to be for me - I understand if people want to vote for the lady who painted herself holding a glass of wine and her cat - I nearly did myself to be honest).
Water-mixable oils on canvas board.

So a couple of days ago I was in Jerry's artarama to get some oil-based paint pen for a project, and while I was there the guy at the counter noticed I was wearing my belt buckle on my left hip. In his rush to be "in the know" he exclaimed I must be a mechanic or body worker.
I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was because if I were my belt buckle center line, it causes a rather uncomfortable bulge on the belt line due to, well you know, the duty sized pistol I carry

FIGURE DRAWING CLASSES - MW & T/TH - MIDTERM PREP INSTRUCTIONS - 3/2/23
For today and over this weekend , BOTH CLASSES :
Students will be doing in class research regarding the midterm .
The midterm requires that you use the self as a model.
You will create a self portrait using the mirror as your reference.
You will NOT use a photo as a reference. The mirror offers the artist a more dimensional way of studying the self.
This assignment will require that you develop this drawing gradually through various sessions for a total of 25 -40 hours.
You will be use graphite pencils on Bristol paper 18 x 24 inches. In addition to developing the self from the mirror, you will need to develop an allegorical theme to enhance the message of your portrait.
I have added a link below that talks more about Allegory in Art and painting.
Read that as you start the class.
https://mymodernmet.com/allegory-examples-art/
In addition to the reading mentioned above, you will also watch a couple of videos.
There are three videos I would like you to look at.
These videos provide information regarding ways to properly develop features of the face and how to reference the mirror as your guide.
Start from the bottom and make your way to the top.
Use the top video titled face and head proportions as the platform to practice a self portrait using the mirror.
Watch the video then apply the knowledge you have acquired to do your class assignment.
You will do practice drawings today as you plan your portrait. ( M/W class you will also do this as HW today)
Do not draw bigger or smaller than an actual real life dimensions. Make sure you include shoulders all the way to below the chest.
Spend at least two hours of class time to see how much you can improve your image. (HW time as well for M/W class)
This is just a preliminary practice for your midterm. I will give additional instructions and information regarding the due date on Monday and Tuesday for each class.
Post all work completed today by end of class time in your portfolio (tumblr).
Materials needed for Midterm: Bristol Paper 18 x 24 Set of Graphite pencils Kneaded and White eraser   All materials above can be found at the following stores :

Did something kinda cool this weekend. My husband, if he could, would be reborn as an astronaut. He loves space. He loves any entity or agency trying to get to space. He has NASA pajamas. He's been wanting to go to various aerospace museums and we just..picked up..and drove to Cape Canaveral this past weekend. Totally on the fly. Never been before. I don't particularly have an interest in space. I can completely see how it can completely consume anothers persons life and interests. The amount of unknowns and the amount of recent technology and I bet the current generation of new scientists have their minds blown constantly. To me it just seems like imminent death and you would never catch me on a rocket period. I think people willingly going to space are crazy. But I'm so not up to date with space stuff that I didn't even know we were going to the moon (hopefully) again in a few days. I took a photo of the artemis rocket. We couldn't get close and had to see it from across the water but my husband completely geeked out when he learned my samsung phone could get a much closer shot than his iphone. Periodically he makes fun of my samsung, but who's laughing now!?!?!
But the Kennedy Space Center was pretty cool. I wasn't expecting it to look like a theme park. I was expecting maybe a giant museum like the one in Washington DC. So that was different. They do keep you quite entertained.
My husband also gifted me with a stop at Jerrys Artarama in Jacksonville on our way down there. He researched the entire art store himself "you ever heard of a thing called..Jerrys....?" YES. I think I've been to one, one time when I lived in Tennessee years and years ago but I didn't do traditional art then and I had no money. I've been to a blick several times but otherwise this was my first time in a Jerrys. I bought a few things just because I was there otherwise I think I own everything for art I could possibly need.
That was a lot of driving. I'm happy to be home now. In my own bed. I did finish "Im Glad My Mom Died" memoir by Jenette Mccurdy while I drove to and from and I may need to save my thoughts on that for another time.
otherwise this week I plan to maybe paint my silly tiger painting and play some Horizon Forbidden West. I work Tuesday and Wednesday and thats another rant as well lol
