Robert Finley Interview: Something to Laugh About
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The most stunning and heartbreaking song on blues singer Robert Finley's latest album Black Bayou (Easy Eye Sound), is made up. On album closer "Alligator Bait", the narrator--at first talking rather than singing--describes trudging through the swamp, his grandfather having just purchased for him a pair of hip boots. Backed by Kenny Brown's spindly guitars, Eric Deaton's slinky bass, and Jeffrey Clemens' slow-burning, stomping drums, Finley's gruff voice tells the story of this character wading around, waiting for something to happen. He accidentally steps on an alligator's back, thinking it's a log; his grandfather shoots the gator after it reacts. Matter-of-fact, Finley states, darkly humorous, "A lotta kids got ate like that." But on the second half of the song, he sings, wailing like a bluesman who had his heart broken. Only this time, he's taken aback by familial betrayal, realizing his grandfather had only bought him the hip boots and told him to enter the swamp in order to use him as alligator bait. When the narrator goes home to tell his father, his father laughs and brushes him aside, confessing that the same thing happened to him when he was a kid. Most of us face a mini existential crisis when we learn our parents aren't perfect. The narrator of "Alligator Bait", on the other hand, has just learned of his own dispensability.
When I spoke to Finley over the phone a few days before Black Bayou was released in late October, he confessed, "'Alligator Bait' was supposed to be cheerful. I didn't want to make him look like a mean old grandpa. It's just something to laugh about," before pausing and adding, "Maybe it'll make some kids stay away from the creek." Indeed, seven years into his improbable comeback, Finley views his role as a singer and entertainer as twofold: meeting the audience at the heart while simultaneously giving them advice, telling them the barebones truth when other authority figures won't. On Black Bayou, he reckons with ideas of homesickness and loneliness, lust and love, selflessness and salvation. Buoyed by longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, Finley wrote all of the songs in the studio, and his familiarity with his supporting cast of musicians resulted in songs that were both efficiently recorded and emotionally acute. Brown's guitar winces with longing on "Livin' Out A Suitcase" as Finley's tired of traveling. On "Waste Of Time", a song that sees Finley taking pride in rural living even if it means missing out on opportunities provided by cities, the buzz-saw guitars and Clemens' clattering percussion yield a perfect maximalism to go along with Finley's claims that, yes, there's still a lot to digest right outside your doorstep. "There are so many guys down here with super talent," Finely said. "They haven't been exposed to the right places."
In fact, Finley's daughter and grandaughter, Christy Johnson and LaQuindrelyn McMahon, offer a prototype. Like many musicians and singers in rural Louisiana, Johnson had long been singing at church, specifically in the youth choir before she started traveling with her father, joining him on his 2019 America's Got Talent stint and eventually recording background vocals on 2021's autobiographical Sharecropper's Son. And Finley insisted to Auerbach on McMahon singing backup on Black Bayou, though she's also in her own band, according to Finley. After all, there's not much of a difference between blues and gospel music. As Finley puts it, it's just "Oh, baby!" versus "Oh, lord!"
Tumblr media
Really, Finley feels his songs could essentially soundtrack various milestones or important events in life. He made sweet doo wop outlier "Lucky Day" for others. "It's a wedding song. It's for people celebrating their 50th anniversary," he said. "It's one of those songs you can use in different situations." In contrast, he describes "Susie Q"-esque lurker "What Goes Around Comes Around" as "basically scripture," even as he sings lines like, "I got my whiskey and my woman / I ain't worried about a thing." Living the way you want and keeping to yourself can be a holy exercise, too. "They're the true facts. No sugarcoating," Finley said, adding, "Something the preacher ain't gonna say. They'd kick him out the church!"
The line between Finley's performance as authentic versus an act is not one he's really ultimately concerned with, as the very fact that he's gotten here is surreal. "I'm living my childhood dream at my age," he said. "I get a chance to express myself. To be able to go back and look at myself on film to see how I've made a fool of myself." Multiple times throughout our conversation, he referred to himself as in total service of the audience, wanting to make them laugh, wanting to make their lives easier, even if he needs to paint himself as a sinner or dunce in order to do so. Still, he has his head on his shoulders. "There's a difference between acting a fool and being a fool," Finley said. "One means you're a really good actor because you can act crazy, and the other says, 'You're fucking crazy for real.'" Find me a preacher who'd admit that!

Casino Royale    [trailer]
After earning 00 status and a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. He must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker.
Looking back now, it's hard to remember the uproar and axiety because of the casting a blond and blue-eyed Bond that dominated the news before the first trailer came out and blew everyone away.
The opening action scene on the constraction site with the parkour chase is still insane. I remember getting sweaty palms when seeing it at the theatre back then.
The birth of Bond with a personal life. A great start, not at least thanks to Eva Green. I just have to avoid thinking about how it all ended fifteen years later.
The ... tension between Craig and Mikkelsen is hard to ignore. Though I still regret the way the movie casually introduced torture to a mainstream blockbuster film.

5.36 The Bewitchin’ Pool
Director: Joseph M. Newman
Director of Photography: George T. Clemens
“A brief epilogue for concerned parents: Of course, there isn't any such place as the gingerbread house of Aunt T, and we grownups know there's no door at the bottom of a swimming pool that leads to a secret place. But who can say how real the fantasy world of lonely children can become? For Jeb and Sport Sharewood, the need for love turned fantasy into reality.”

For Whom the Bell Tolls, A New Opera in Two Acts from Brian Wilbur Grundstrom on Vimeo.
"Fighting Fascism and Sacrificing for Love"
Hemingway was a larger-than-life personality. In his popular novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, we can see some of the author in the character of Robert Jordan, an idealistic young American in 1930's Spain, who accepts a doomed mission to blow up a bridge.
Through his lyrical melody-driven music, Brian Wilbur Grundstrom brings out the emotional depths of the characters and new insight to this Hemingway classic. Using the full versatility of opera, David Dorsen's libretto and Grundstrom's music explore Hemingway's themes of trust, loyalty, honor, love, betrayal, fear, pain, loss, and sacrifice, while adding modern insight, as Robert Jordan's notions of honor clash with the reality of civil war.
The opera takes place in the mountains of northern Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.

Happy 51st Birthday 2020 PDC World Darts Champion Peter Wright.
Peter was born in Livingston, but spent most of his childhood in England, he chose the country of his birth as his home nation when playing darts and helped Scotland win their first World Cup of Darts title in June 2019, defeating the Republic of Ireland 3-1 in the final in Hamburg.
Originally a qualifier for the 1996 Lakeside Championship, it would be more than a decade before Scottish-born Wright joined the PDC circuit on a full-time basis, he has since given up his job as a tyre fitter and gone from strength to strength.
After making progress up the rankings during 2011 and 2012 - which included his maiden ranking title at a Players Championship in Killarney - the following year saw Wright reach his first televised semi-final at the UK Open. He went on to reach the 2014 World Championship final, losing out to Michael van Gerwen but securing himself a spot in the Premier League and World Series of Darts, where he reached the final on his debut in Dubai.
The most colourful character on the circuit - with wife Jo, a hairdresser by trade, providing the painted hair to match his unique dress sense - Wright's rise to third in the world included him being a finalist in back-to-back UK Opens and World Series of Darts Finals in 2015 & 2016 as well as in the PDC World Cup of Darts and a World Series event in Japan.
Wright began 2017 in style as he followed up an appearance in the World Championship semi-finals with three UK Open Qualifier wins, before going on to finally claim victory on the big stage with his triumph in the UK Open finals in Minehead, where he saw off Gerwyn Price in the final.
Three European Tour triumphs followed a treble of UK Open Qualifier victories, while Wright also claimed a Players Championship victory to consolidate his status as world number three in a brilliant start to 2017.
Wright went on to reach the Premier League Play-Offs for the first time in May 2017, finishing second in the final league table before defeating Taylor in the semi-finals, but he would pay for six missed match darts as Van Gerwen edged a thrilling final.
The Scottish ace claimed a European Tour title at the start of July 2017, before reaching the final of the World Matchplay later that month, only to lose out to Taylor in his last appearance on the Blackpool stage.
Wright picked up another European Tour win, followed by the German Darts Masters World Series crown, before going down to van Gerwen in the final of the Grand Slam of Darts in November 2017.
Having reached the final of the 2018 World Cup of Darts in June, Wright then won a first title of the year at Players Championship 14 in Wigan and then claimed his second World Series triumph at the Melbourne Darts Masters.
Wright backed up his Australian success with a third title of the year at Players Championship 17 in Barnsley in September and reached the World Grand Prix final for the first time the following month, losing out to Van Gerwen.
In the World Championship in December 2020 Wright survived a match dart at bullseye to win a sudden-death leg against Noel Malicdem in the second round, before beating Seigo Asada and Jeffrey de Zwaan, to reach the quarter-finals, where he triumphed 5–3 over Humphries to reach the semi-final for the first time since 2017 where he played Welshman Gerwyn Price winning through 6-3 in a bad tempered match.
In the final he again met Michael van Gerwen and won 7–3 in the final to become the 2020 World Darts Champion on January 1st.
In a season that was affected by the covid pandemic Wright piced up two of darts “majors” winning the Masters in February and  2020 Unibet European Championship in November, beating England’s James Wade 11-4 in the final. However  Wright had a poor showing at the Grand Slam failing to get through from the group stages, he later admitted it hit him hard and said “ I could have walked away from the sport quite easily." His form improved in his next event  with a run to the semi-finals of the Players Championship Finals  making him just the third player in history (after Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor) to exceed £1,000,000 on the order of merit.  Peter returned to defend his world title but Peter was eliminated in the third round after losing 4–3 to Gabriel Clemens who became the first ever German player to reach the fourth round.
Peter’s hair takes two hours to complete and is done by his hairdresser wife Joanne and inspired by their daughter. He equates his look to applying war paint before going into battle, as he is naturally shy away from the oche. The second pic shows how he looks when he relaxes at home, posted on his twitter in 2018 and showing his support for World Down Syndrome Day  wearing odd socks he wrote he always wears odd socks!

*I won a year’s subscription to 8tracks that I never used because nobody else was using 8tracks. But the small boost to my ego was enough of a prize. I think my true calling may be “DJ for an entirely early-music-focused radio station which does not exist.”

Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
Here is the fourth part to my 2017 list. I’m giving a quick list of albums that I heard from 2017 in 7-10 at a time. There will be a few more parts to the list over the coming weeks. I may do a listening to some of the ones that I know I like, but want to revisit, and use that as an opportunity to review some of those more deeply (If there are any you see that you would particularly like to see a review of, leave a note). This list does not include reissues, live material or compilations.
Artist- Album (general genre)- and brief description
Hudson- s/t (jazz)- They are a true jazz supergroup from across generations of jazz performers. John Medeski, John Scofield, Larry Grenadier and Jack DeJohnette join together to put together an album that fantastically puts together an album that touches on funk jazz, traditional jazz and has covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix and The Band. They also use one song that Jack DeJohnette co-wrote with keyboardist Bruce Hornsby. They sound as if they have played together their entire lives and have released a wonderful first album.
Chris Stapleton- From A Room, Vol. 1 & 2 (country)- Chris Stapleton released two companion records in 2017 with his band. They are both between 30-40 minutes long (together they are not much longer then his breakthrough album “Traveler”. He continues the strong songwriting and wonderfully tuneful songs that he has been known for throughout his career.
Dan Auerbach- Waiting On A Song (pop/rock)-The Black Keys guitarist/singer (amongst other duties, musically and otherwise) releases an album backed by a large number of Nashville’s finest musicians. The backing band includes Bobby Wood, John Prine, Kenny Malone, Jerry Douglas, Jeffrey Clemens, Duane Eddy and many others. Going in with a great group of songs and the laid back recording nature that was present during the sessions (at least, that’s what I’ve read), it turns out a great album. One thing, though, is this group of Nashville musicians put together, to my ear, a very ‘70s sounding LA/Laurel Canyon rock record. More so than anything I would relate to a “quintessential” Nashville sound. Either way, this will be a great album for your next road trip.
Chuck Berry- Chuck (rock)- The final release of Chuck Berry. The album released soon after the pioneering guitarist had passed away. What is very good, however, is the quality of his last album. The first thing he had released (of new music) in 3 decades, and that was a live album. It is probably also the best thing he has released since the ‘70s. Strong all the way through, I want to mention two notable songs. He reworks ‘Havana Moon’ into ‘Jamaica Moon’, the original which he felt didn’t the respect it deserved because of its Cuban name. He also writes and drops a sequel to ‘Johnny B Goode’ with ‘Lady B. Goode’ a song that makes sure girls know there is a place for them in the world of electric guitar. You can look to some of today’s guitarists like Susan Tedeschi, Samantha Fish, Kaki King and Hedwig Mollestad as a few women he may have had in mind with that song.
Black Country Communion- BCCIV (hard rock)- Black Country Communion continues with their fourth album of hard rocking blues rock music in the tradition of Led Zeppelin. If you haven’t come across this band before, it is a supergroup of incredibly talented musicians. They are Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath), Joe Bonamassa (in my favorite setting for him), Jason Bonham (original drummer John Bonham’s son) and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater). All four are able to more than hold their own, and if you are looking for new bands using the sounds of 70s hard rock as the basis for their songs this group is one of the places to do that and do it well.
A War On Drugs- A Deeper Understanding (indie rock)- Their follow-up to the amazing “Lost In The Dream” while sharing the sound and relaxed production of that album is not quite on the same level. “A Deeper Understanding” should appeal to fans of their previous album, but it does not have the songs that stick with you quite as immediately as “LITD” had. Still a good album, and one that may take a few extra listens to get you into the same familiarity that you had with “Lost In The Dream”.
Ruthie Foster- Joy Comes Back (gospel)- A gospel-ish album that  covers Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’? That’s right. That’s exactly what we have here. Whether it is that gem of a cover, the Derek Trucks assisted ‘Joy Comes Back’ or the song for the ‘Working Woman’ this is a tight cohesive record with some very good performances!
Here are 7 (actually 8 with the two Chris Stapleton albums) albums I heard in 2017, there will be more from this list coming in the future, and this isn’t necessarily a ranking, just in the order that I was writing them down. I hope you enjoy and happy hunting!
