Notre Dame’s Uncovered Tombs Start to Reveal Their Secrets

Two sarcophaguses unearthed in reconstruction work after 2019 fire identified as elite canon of cathedral and young cavalier

Two lead sarcophaguses discovered buried under the nave at Notre Dame Cathedral in what was described as an “extraordinary and emotional” find have begun giving up their secrets, French scientists announced on Friday.

The first contains the remains of a high priest who died in 1710 after what experts say appeared to be a sedentary life. The occupant of the second has not yet been identified – and may never be – but is believed to be a young, wealthy and privileged noble who could have lived as far back as the 14th century.

The tombs were uncovered as part of a cache of statues, sculptures and fragments of the cathedral’s original 13th-century rood screen buried under the floor of the transept crossing at the heart of the cathedral that was ravaged by fire in April 2019.

The burial sites were described as of “remarkable scientific quality” and were found after a preventive dig under the floor where heavy scaffolding is to be erected to install the cathedral’s new spire.

While most of the treasures were discovered barely 20cm (8in) under the cathedral floor, a body-shaped lead sarcophagus was buried one metre deep.

Once opened by specialists in Toulouse, it was found to contain what was left of a man, probably in his 30s, who researchers have named “Le Cavalier”, as his pelvic bones suggest he was an experienced horseman.

There was no name plaque on the coffin, which was moulded around the shape of the body, and holes in the lead around the head meant the remains had been exposed to the air and severe deterioration.

Scientists are continuing to examine fragments of cloth and plant material found inside the coffin and say he was embalmed – a rare practice in the middle ages – and appears to have been buried with a crown of flowers.

A brass plaque on the second lead sarcophagus, also exposed to the air and water infiltration from the historic flooding of the Seine in 1910, confirmed that it contained the remains of Antoine de la Porte, the canon of Notre Dame Cathedral who died on Christmas Eve 1710 aged 83.

Eric Crubézy, professor of biological anthropology at the University of Toulouse III, who oversaw the cutting open of the coffins, said the two men were clearly important in their respective eras to have been buried in such prestigious tombs at the heart of the cathedral.

The unknown cavalier would have been a member of “the elite” at the time of his death to have been interred at the foot of the large cross on the since-destroyed rood screen, an ornate partition between the chancel and the nave that separated the clergy and choir from the congregation. Most rood screens were removed from France’s Catholic churches during the Counter-Reformation in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The young man had suffered a “chronic disease” that had destroyed most of his teeth by the time he died, Crubézy told journalists. “He would have had a difficult end of life.” The dead aristocrat also had a deformation of the skull caused by wearing a headdress or headband as a baby.

Christophe Besnier, who headed the scientific team for the dig carried out by France’s national archaeological institute, Inrap, told a press conference: “If the date of his death was around the second half of the 16th century or early 17th century, we may be able to identify him in the death register that we have. If it’s earlier than that, we probably won’t ever know who he was.”

Unlike the cavalier, de la Porte had “extraordinarily good teeth”, Crubézy said. “They were remarkable for his age. We see this very rarely, but he clearly cleaned his teeth and took care of them.”

De la Porte was rich, influential and not only commissioned several works of art that are now in the Louvre, including a painting by Jean Jouvenet entitled The Mass of Canon Antoine de la Porte, but paid 10,000 livres – a small fortune at the time – for the renovation of the choir of Notre Dame Cathedral. Part of the destroyed rood screen was used in constructing his tomb.

After fire swept through the 850-year-old cathedral, one of Paris’s most symbolic and visited monuments, in April 2019, almost destroying the entire edifice, President Emmanuel Macron pledged to have it rebuilt and open for mass in five years.

The Inrap team was called in to carry out a “preventive dig” under a section of the cathedral floor between February and April before a 30 metre-high, 600-tonne scaffold was built to reconstruct the monument’s spire. The archaeologists were given a strict timeframe and only a specific area in which to carry out the excavation.

Dominique Garcia, president of Inrap, reiterated that the human remains were not “archaeological objects” and would be treated “with respect from beginning to end” of the research before being returned to Paris for the culture ministry to decide what would happen to them.

Steve had never been on the set of a music video before, but all of the excitement of the cameras and crew were overshadowed completely by Eddie.

Eddie.

They’d been together for years and still, Steve was so gone for him it was embarrassing.

He was sitting on a pew, one foot resting on the edge to bring his knee up to his chest in a way he hoped was hiding his erection. He’d been half-hard for what felt like hours, his throat dry despite how fucking wet his mouth was. Was he drooling? God, he felt like he was.

Eddie was as commanding in front of the cameras as he was on stage, his body serpentine in its movements. He usually dressed in the same old ripped jeans and loose black vests for their live shows. More often than not the vest would disappear by the fourth song, and Eddie would slick back his sweaty hair and tie it up with the hair tie he kept around one wrist. He was hot, so hot that Steve burned up every time he saw them live, but this - this - was another level entirely.

Eddie wasn’t wearing a suit exactly, but it was about as close as he’d ever come. Corroded Coffin were famous enough now that alt designers were chomping at the bit to style them. Eddie had the body for it, after all, tall and slender like the most famous runway models. And like most models, that coveted, wraith-like look came from an unhealthy diet of cigarettes, booze and maybe one solid meal every few months.

Steve liked Eddie a little plumper, when he was home off tour and finally eating properly, fed a steady stream of meals by Steve who had learned to cook just for him. He liked when he could grab the soft meat of his hips as he fucked him from behind, loved when he’d throw Eddie on his back and get his head crushed between cushiony thighs as he ate him out long and slow. But he liked this Eddie too, as much as he felt guilty for it. Objectively, Eddie was sexy as fuck, and his slender frame made his snake-like movements even more pronounced.

The long, black trousers helped too, beautifully tailored so that they clung to Eddie’s hips and thighs before loosening just slightly below the knee. They were high waisted, covering Eddie’s stomach, cinching him in at the waist. A perfectly straight line of small silver buttons down the centre were for decoration only, the real zip fastening hidden behind a flap of fabric to give the trousers a seamless look.

Eddie was shirtless, of course, but he wore an open black blazer that fitted him as perfectly as the trousers did. The lapel and chest pocket were lined with round silver studs to match the buttons on the trousers, and Corroded Coffin’s logo was embroidered over one side.

Something about the outfit had Steve sweating so badly he had to fan himself with a pamphlet of hymns he’d snagged from the front of the church. Because of course the video was filmed in a church, hundreds of burning candles giving the whole place a beautiful glow that lended itself perfectly to the song. It was more of a ballad than a rock song, though the guitars were still gritty and Eddie’s voice rough as he sang.

The band performed in the chancel, where they gained a little height. Eddie kept sauntering to the stairs, moving down and back up as he sang, hands gripping at his lapels, his hair, his throat. Without the need for a microphone, he had nothing to keep his wandering hands busy, and Steve was desperate to take over all that touching.

It was hot in the church, the scent from the candles and incense cloying. Eddie had a light sheen of sweat over his skin, making the dark ink of his many tattoos stand out even more than usual. His fingernails were also painted black, his usual mass of jewellery all silver to match the studs on his jacket.

Steve was crawling out of his skin.

He was grateful his parents weren’t religious. He had grown up a true agnostic, and even though he couldn’t say for sure that he didn’t believe in a God, he was pretty comfortable with the odds to have no issues in fucking Eddie in any area of the church they could find privacy. He even prayed for it, begging any deity who might listen to provide an opportunity where they could be alone for just a moment. At this rate, he’d need five minutes, tops.

La violence des affrontements entre les pays d'Islam et la civilisation occidentale n’a pas empêché que circulent entre eux bien des influences culturelles. La Chrétienté a été irriguée par un flux de connaissances du côté de la philosophie, des mathématiques, de l’astronomie et de la médecine.

Quelque chose qui flotte dans l’air du temps et que je n’ai guère besoin de définir m’a incité à choisir le thème dont nous allons traiter ce matin. Il s’agit de l’apport des pays d’Islam à la civilisation occidentale au temps du Moyen-Âge, de l’humanisme et de la Renaissance. La violence des affrontements entre ces deux mondes, dessinant une géographie très mobile des dominations militaires et religieuses, n’a pas empêché que circulent entre eux bien des influences culturelles. Elle n’a pas empêché que la Chrétienté, coupée elle-même en deux entre l’Est et l’Ouest, ait été irriguée par un flux de connaissances venues de l’Islam, du côté spécialement de la philosophie, des mathématiques, de l’astronomie et de la médecine. Soit qu’il s’agît d’apports originaux, soit que, par un détour surprenant, une part de l’héritage de l’antiquité gréco-romaine, qui s’était trouvé largement occulté, ait pu être de la sorte sauvegardé et retransmis dans des pays, les nôtres, qui en retrouvèrent ainsi pleinement la saveur et la fécondité. Cette donnée de grande ampleur a été fort inégalement prise en compte, ensuite, par la conscience collective en Occident, mais l’historiographie des deux derniers siècles en a établi progressivement l’importance. Comme en témoigne, entre autres, les travaux de mon invité, Joël Chandelier, maître de conférences en histoire médiévale à l’Université de Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis, qui s’attache ardemment à l’étude de ces phénomènes de transmission, propres à protéger, hier comme aujourd’hui, contre toutes les tentations du repli sur soi. Xst, by Jean Hemling, a disciple of Albert Durer – the tears on the virgins face very good – the worst part of the picture is the body of notre saviour when taken from the X – is too flexible – too little like death – then to St. Marys’ church (one of the handsomest I ever saw) to see the famous Danse macare or Danse des morts par Holbein, in the sacristy – singular picture – very good – each Death in a different attitude and one between each pair of people – In one of the side chapels, a descent from the cross and on the inside of the door that shuts before it? a St. Olaff [Olaf] (the 1st Xtian king of the north) between 2 other figures both by Perugino – (not by Holbein or Lucas de Leide as Reichard says in the book I bought at Hamburg) – very good – the altar very fine by Quellinus of Antwerp and given by Friedhagen the burgomaster in 1709 whose bust in white marble is on the right of the altar a little back – the last supper in white marble (taken from Leonard da Vinci) is beautifully sculptured – and the 4 large – as life figures Religion Hope etc, are good – on the right, too, of the altar stands a tall Gothic crocketed fonte (brass) of 1472, very beautiful – weighing 6000 lbs. – the French wished to have taken it to Paris – In the chapel behind the altar and and opposite the astronomical clock is a very good picture (the entrance of our saviour into Jerusalem) in the Rafael style given lately by Overbeck an artist of Lubeck and now living in Rome – the sycamore tree into which -------- climbed is represented as a palm – the head and neck of the ass admirable; but the feet (white!) are those of a horse – the clock struck at 12 and 7 apostles instead of 12 came out at one door and went in at another having turned and bowed ridiculously to the virgin and child in passing – the other 5 apostles lost or out of order -  then went up to the great bell (cloche) of St. Marys’ (265 steps) for the view – amply repaid – nothing gives one such a good idea of a place – It is the Wackenitz [Wakenitz] whence runs to Ratzeburg and the Steckenitz, a canal, which falls into the Elbe at Lanenburg [Laufenburg] and into the Trave 2 lieues from the Baltic a little south of Lübeck – good town – 3?main streets and the streets striking down from them and thro’ them to the river – the old brick porte de Holstein very handsome reminds me much of the porte noire à Trêves – the front towards the town in quite in that style and has 2 towers, too, but with pointed flêches springing from them – the porte de Travemünd[e] is an old brick square tower with 5 or 6 tiers of Gothic windows such as in the porte de Holstein – Looking down on the roof of the church saw it partly green – it is Swedish copper at 22 schellings a lb. – the plates about seem about 2ft. Toutefois, si Celui qui est la vérité est en nous, quel mensonge nous fera chanceler? C'est une certitude, seule la vérité rend libre.

On ne peut la combattre. Si nous connaissons la vérité, personne ne pourra plus nous asservir.

Si Christ est formé en nous, nous ne serons plus jamais ni ballottés ni emportés à tous vents de doctrines! Oui, notre pied prendra appui sur le Roc inébranlable.

Le monde pourra bien vaciller, notre équilibre ne sera pourtant pas ébranlé.

Le monde pourra bien s'effondrer, nous resterons pourtant debout. Soyons-en pleinement convaincus, si le Fils nous affranchit, nous serons réellement libres.

Si la perspective de ce grand bonheur nous fait languir, si nous soupirons après cette liberté glorieuse, qu'avons-nous encore à attendre?

Lisons et méditons la Parole de Dieu! Croyons-le, elle éclairera tous les recoins, aussi ténébreux soient-ils, de nos âmes.

La véritable lumière rayonnera sur notre être tout entier! Pour sûr, nous connaîtrons avec certitude que Celui qui est en nous, est plus grand que celui qui est dans le monde!
