He was the sugar-sweet Tchaikovsky of impressionism. But as the Royal Academy's blockbusting new exhibition will show, Claude Monet was also a radical

"...There is not much cachet in liking Monet; rather the reverse. This is art for the easy-on-the-eye brigade, the philistine rich and the know-nothing middle classes. Isn't it? He is soft, luscious and commercial; the Tchaikovsky of the paintbrush, turning out sweet, dancing little Sugar Plum fairies of paintings, isn't he? It's clever, technically brilliant; but eye-candy. No?

Such snobbery tends to drive curators to justify Monet exhibitions by insisting on his political and art-revolutionary relevance. There is a slight embarrassment about the very popularity of Monet shows, as if they were like the 'erotica' section in posh bookshops which keep them in business but are hardly the sort of thing one would wish to be judged on.

So the curators of this show have gone to some lengths to reclaim Monet as a hard-edged artist, just as happened with the 1990 show, 'Monet in the Nineties'. Then, the emphasis was on putting Monet's images of haystacks, poplars and Rouen cathedral in the context of resurgent patriotism, closely connected with the land and traditional art: he was political, see. Now, the catalogue includes an essay on the connections between late Monet and New York abstract expressionism - almost as if Monet has to be excused, or validated, by linking him with Jackson Pollock.

In each case, the arguments are meticulous - the US academic Paul Hayes Tucker worked on both exhibitions and contributes a superb essay to the catalogue. And indeed, these are not only deliriously beautiful but also radical, extreme and sometimes even difficult paintings, created by an artist who might have been old - he was 60 in 1900 - but was a full, wide-eyed observer of the first quarter of our tragic century.

When it opens, he is recovering from the great trauma which ripped French society apart a few years before: the Dreyfus Affair, in which a Jewish captain was wrongly accused of passing military secrets to the Germans, court-martialled, degraded and deported to solitary confinement. It split a worried nation in two, with viciously anti-semitic, Catholic and right-wing forces, against the Left and the liberals.

The anti-semitic, anti-Dreyfus campaign included, to their shame, Degas, Renoir and Cézanne. But when, with huge courage, Emile Zola led the charge for Dreyfus, Monet sprung quickly to his defence. Zola was convicted of libel and sentenced to imprisonment; instead he fled to England in 1898..."

Week 21.19 weekvlog Heerlijke Happen

Wat een heerlijke week was het weer! We begonnen in Zeeland, inmiddels mijn tweede thuis zo vaak ben ik daar de laatste tijd. Vervolgens naar Tilburg om een leuke workshop en tof event bij te wonen. En als klapper van de week een foodbloggers event in eigen dorp! Jawel mijn eigen dorpje stond even helemaal in de spotlight deze week! Zeker niet als het gerecht wat we aan boord gingen eten door een drie sterrenchef bereid zou gaan worden. We hadden fantastisch weer en de sfeer zat er goed in! Eens te meer blijkt maar hoe mooi en fantastisch producten uit Nederland zijn. Gek genoeg gaan bijna al deze mosselen naar onze zuiderburen die er dus ook hele lekkere gerechtjes mee weten te maken. Chef Gert de Mangeleer maakte een énorme pan met deze mosselen klaar en dat was echt genieten!

De boot lag al op ons te wachten bij Neeltje Jans in Zeeland. Influencer...? Op donderdag reed ik naar Tilburg naar het Princess influencers event. Eerlijk gezegd gebruik ik zelf nooit dat woord. Er hangt toch een beetje een negatieve klank aan. Natuurlijk maken wij reclame voor bedrijven, maar ik kies zelf altijd wat bij mij past en waar ik enthousiast over ben. Niet zozeer met idee om jullie nu eens flink te gaan " influencen". We kregen daar dus ook een hele leuke workshop van Tess Milne over het gebruik van sociale media en wat je daarmee allemaal kunt doen. Erg leerzaam allemaal, en ja waarschijnlijk ga ik met dit bedrijf een betaalde samenwerking aan. Ik vind dat ze erg leuke producten verkopen.

Geitjes geitjes geitjes....

Vrijdag was het zover! het geitjes event hier in Andel bij Lekker Gemekker. Wat een ontzettend leuke dag hadden wij zeg. Nu kan ik hier al alles gaan verklappen, maar jullie raden het al.... er komt een uitgebreide blog over met heel veel leuke foto's en genoeg informatie over dit bedrijf en onze leuke middag.

Stocks Surging Into Major Resistance

When a stock surges higher over several days or weeks, it attracts more attention. Such moves are typically unsustainable, though (in the short-term), hurting those that buy late in the move. And if the stock surges into a resistance zone, it may be time to consider taking profits (selling) instead of buying. Resistance is an area where the price has struggled to move above in the past. It is not a prediction that a stock won’t move above resistance, rather, it is just a cautionary area. Below are stocks that have been strong recently, but are butting up against resistance. A breakout above these resistance levels could signal a long-term advance, but failure at resistance signals a significant decline over the next several months.

CEMEX, S.A.B. (CX) reached a multi-year high at $14.37 in 2014 and hit a low of $3.64 in January 2016. That downtrend looks to have ended when the stock rallied aggressively in February through April, and again in July through August. There is resistance between $9 and $9.35, which has been tested three times since August, and the price is once again approaching that level. The stock closed at $8.84, following a 6.51% jump on Jan. 20. If the stock can break above resistance, this uptrend will continue, targeting $11. The downside is that if the price doesn’t break, though (or can’t hold above) resistance, then it is likely to collapse back toward support between $7.70 and $7.19.

Rexnord Corporation (RXN) is also at one of these inflection points. This stock was in a downtrend since 2014, after it peaked at $30.94. Rexnord rallied at the start of 2016 but stalled in April at $22.97. Throughout 2016 the stock tested the $22 to $23 region four times, and it is testing it again on Jan. 20 following a 2.87% rise ($22.19 close). The entire area between $22 and $23 is resistance, having turned the price lower multiple times. If the price continues to rally through $23 the upside target is $27.50 to $28. If the price declines from here, support is between $19.50 and $18.35.

Teekay Corporation (TK) traded as high as $67.98 in 2014, before plummeting to $4.37 in January of 2016. The price has stabilized above that level, with resistance forming near $10.50 and $11.85 over the last year. The higher swing lows going back to early 2016 are a bullish sign, but the price will still need to rally above $10.50 and $11.85 to signal investors do in fact believe a bottom is in place. The stock moved up 6.61% on Jan. 20 to close at $10.16. Above $11.85, the next upside target is $17.42—where the price gapped lower from in Dec. 2015. If the price falters at resistance, there is minor support near $8 and more substantial support near $6.

The Bottom Line

Traders can easily get trapped into thinking about only the upside in a stock. While a stock could continue breaking through resistance, it may not. Consider the downside if the breakout doesn’t happen. Weigh the options on where you will get out, how you will control risk and whether you are willing to hold the stock through multiple up and downs, which may still result in the stock going lower (or higher). Resistance isn’t necessarily a sell signal, but it is a place to use caution for both holding long positions or initiating new ones.
