Dark Dungeons. Classic religious tract by Jack Chick. This one is very famous. It tells the story of how Dungeons and Dragons is dangerous. One girl kills herself and another joins a witches coven. This is from the 1980s and is so old the staple is rusting. It’s very fragile. . . There was a similar film in the 80s called Mazes and Monsters in which Tom Hanks had his first starring role. That’s how popular fear of D&D was. A “Jack Chick tract”-style mini paper catalog from Portland, OR-based label Imp Records, circa 1994.

If you are not familiar with Chick tracts, I encourage you to read the Wikipedia article, then check out digitized versions of some in this archive.

If the stylized cover of this Imp Records catalog already looks familiar, then you probably have seen a Chick tract: a small, black-and-white booklet containing an evangelical morality tale meant to scare, shock and convert the wretched unbeliever. They provided eye-rolling entertainment due to the extreme views and implausibly goofy scenarios presented in each story.

And of course these booklets were also ripe for parody, as seen here in the center image. Woman in distress on the cover a Jackknife single? Well, just “12 days later” is is jumping for joy: “Wow! I feel great! Stomping all night!”

Even though I have this catalog, I am pretty sure I bought the label’s releases—including the Spinanes 7″ shown here—independent of these marketing enticements. 

So since @twogargs announced it, I can officially follow suit. I was hired to draw a mock chick tract for Two Gargs Comics! I tried to create a sort of 70’s alt comics style. CHAOTIC NEUTRAL isn't just a comic book and adventure module by @chrisandersoncomics and me. We're also including a satirical "Chick Tract" by artist @ryanbrowneart (Curse Words, God Hates Astronauts). If you don't know what #chicktracts are, they were religious comics made by the late #jackchick. During the so-called Satanic Panic, during the 80s, he created one called "Dark Dungeons" to scare people away from Dungeons and Dragons, believing it to literally involve devil worship. A “Jack Chick tract”-style pamphlet from the Los Angeles band POPDeFect, promoting their 1992 album, Punchdrunk.

The second Jack Chick tract parody in my collection of music-related paper ephemera, this one from the band POPDeFect really goes all-in on not just the style but the form. I’ve scanned all the pages here so you can see the full story, mixing art clearly grabbed from actual Jack Chick tracts with the band’s own. Also, as I fellow radio DJ, I do love that KXLU DJ “Charlie” in here looks to be a reference to an actual person.

While I have a few POPDeFect 7″ singles, I wasn’t that that familiar with the band’s story. But it turns out that they were formed right here in Seattle, with one of the members leaving to form legendary punk outfit U-Men.
