Nostalgia - Jack Drury
a/n: this took me so long to finish, but i'm glad to finally be done with it :) i'm very far behind but i will absolutely get all these done!
summary: you meet jack's parents for the first time over dinner
word count: ~2.3k (i got carried away a little)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m not so sure about this now,” you stop Jack by grabbing onto his hand, your other hand wrapped around your stomach. His eyebrows furrow together as he turns to face you, grabbing onto your hands with his.
“What’s going on?” He wonders, a concerned look on his face.
“I don’t know if I can meet them,” you let out a nervous sigh, feeling the tears well up in your eyes. He frowns and squeezes your hands, thinking over his words carefully.
You two were on the way to his parents house for dinner, the first time you were going to be meeting them. He’s been talking about it for a while, and now that your relationship is more serious, he wanted you to meet them, however, in this moment, you were overthinking everything.
“Why not? It’s all they’ve been talking about for the past few days, they’re so excited to meet you.” He tries to lighten the situation, but your anxiety was through the roof.
“I…I’m scared,” you finally admit, gazing into his hypnotizing eyes. Even in the dimming light of the day, they still shined as bright as they do under the blinding lights of a hockey arena.
“There’s nothing to be scared of, babe. My mom has been waiting to show you my baby pictures since I brought up the idea, she even got the baby book out and has kept it in the living room. My dad is also looking forward to showing you all the hockey memorabilia stuff he has and pucks and other things from when he played.”
“But what if they don’t like me?” Your insecurities were taking over and once they start rolling, it’s not easy to stop. “What if they don’t think I’m smart enough or they think I’m too shy and quiet and-”
“Hey, hey, hey,” Jack coos, bringing you into his arms, holding you tightly against him. “Don’t say any of that. They’re absolutely not going to think any of those things about you, I guarantee it.”
You let his words settle in for a moment before sighing and pulling away from him.
“Alright,” you whisper.
“Do you still want to go?” He asks. You have yet to leave the hotel parking lot, Jack stands there, his eyes scanning your face for any sort of doubt or silent words you weren’t wanting to say.
“I do,” you nod in agreement. “I’m just…I’m worried.”
“I know, but there’s nothing to be worried about, I promise. They’re seriously going to love you.” His hands cup your cheeks so that you stare right at him, making sure that you knew every word he was speaking, he was telling the truth. “I’ll be right by your side the entire time. If you want to leave, how about…you tap my shoulder three times and I’ll make up an excuse for us to go. Does that sound fair?”
This is one thing you loved about Jack. He is always extremely considerate with your feelings and your well-being, giving you a chance to silently tell him things that you sometimes struggle speaking out.
“Yeah,” your voice cracks a little, which Jack notices. He sighs softly and leans forward to capture your lips with his.
“I don’t want you to do anything you’re not comfortable with, baby. If you don’t think you want to meet them tonight, just tell me and I will call them and say I’m sick.”
“No, no, I don’t want you to do that. I’m good with going, I swear,” you grin at him. He pauses once again just to make sure, narrowing his eyes at you for dramatic effect. This elicits a giggle from you, which in turn makes him laugh, and suddenly, your nerves are at ease hearing the sweet sound.
“Alright then, let’s get going.”
The drive isn’t too far, so within fifteen minutes, Jack was pulling up into his parent’s driveway, turning the car off. You sit there for a moment, staring at the large, fancy house, when Jack grabbing your hand breaks you from your daze.
No words are said between the two of you as he gives you time to process everything. It’s not until you start to exit the car that he follows in suit, immediately reaching for your hand and squeezing it tight; to make you even more comforted, he brings your entwined hands up to his face and presses a long kiss to the back of your hand, gazing down at you after he parts.
With a nod, he walks right into his house, calling out to let his parents know that you two have arrived. Within a few seconds, they’re rushing into the living room and instantly, his mom hugs you tight, rubbing your shoulder in a friendly manner.
“Hi! It is so nice to finally meet you!” She beams as she steps back. “I’m Liz.”
“Nice to meet you,” you smile at her before Jack’s dad walks over.
“It’s very lovely to meet you, (Y/N),” Ted says, shaking your hand and patting your back gently, just like his wife did.
“Nice to meet you as well. Jack’s told me a lot about you.”
“And nothing about me? That’s so rude of him,” Liz teases her son, slapping his arm in a playful way, making Jack chuckle and his face flush.
“He has mentioned you quite a bit, too,” you try to cover yourself, your heart racing in your chest. Jack sensed you were already on edge so he stepped over to you and placed his arm around your waist, pulling you close to him.
“Well, dinner is almost done, the chicken just needs to cook a little bit longer, but why don’t you guys head to the dining room for now,” Liz says, changing the subject quickly. Ted follows her to help her finish up, and when they disappear, you let out a breath that was stuck in your throat.
Jack kisses your temple and hugs you tightly.
“How are you feeling?” He wonders, his voice quiet as to not worry his parents.
“Still really nervous, but they’re so nice. I feel a little bit more relaxed in that sense.”
“Everything’s going to be fine, okay?” You nod against his shoulder and pull away to follow him to the dining room, where there were four nice plates set out, along with silverware and glasses.
“Are your brothers not home?” You ask him, continuing to look around the decorated dining room.
“No, they went to their friends’ houses for the night. My parents didn’t want to overwhelm you just yet,” he chuckles, caressing your cheek gently. A blush heats your cheeks up under his hand, and he can tell right away.
“Well, I appreciate it.”
“They’re asking about meeting you too,” he adds. “Owen wants me to take them bowling, with you, of course.”
“That sounds like fun, actually,” you agree, surprising Jack; he thought there would be some push back to his statement, but he was more than happy to hear you were open to the idea.
Just as Jack was going to respond, his mom calls out that dinner is ready. Jack grins and sticks his hand out for you to take, which you do, and he leads you right into the kitchen.
Dinner goes quite smooth, his parents ask you about yourself, as expected, the conversation is pretty light rather than interrogating, which is what you thought it would be like in your mind the entire drive over.
Jack offers to help Liz with the dishes and packing up leftovers after everyone finishes eating, leaving you and Ted to interact.
“(Y/N), come with me and I’ll show you the set up we have in the basement,” Ted says motioning for you to follow him over to the door that leads to the basement. With a look back at your boyfriend, Jack waits for you to use your signal, but when you just give him a soft grin and walk towards his dad, he can’t help but break into a huge smile.
“She’s very sweet,” his mom says once she hears the basement door shut. Jack nods and grabs a few Tupperware containers for the leftover food.
“She is. She was really nervous for tonight, so I’m glad to see her more relaxed.”
Ted brings you down the stairs to the furnished basement, first finding a large sectional against one wall and a blank wall facing it; that’s when you notice the projector above the couch, a perfect place to watch movies.
He walks over to a separate part of the basement and that’s when your jaw drops. Photos and jerseys hang along the walls, and theres a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled with plaques, pucks in special cases, all kinds of things, taking up an entire wall.
“Wow,” you whisper, looking over all the items. First game pucks from all the different teams he was on, autographed photos of people he’s played with, even some of Jack’s things, like the puck from his first NHL goal just a couple years ago, the Whalers jersey he wore for Whaler’s night earlier in the year, so many items covered the bookshelves, it would take too long to explain every single thing.
“It used to be just my things, from my time in college and the NHL, then Jack got drafted and I knew I had to make some space,” Ted explains, walking over and picking up a plaque. “This is an award Jack won when he was young, when he first started playing hockey. He was on a youth team here in Illinois, and was voted best player by his coaches and teammates.”
“You must have known he would be something special in the future,” you smile, looking over the wooden plaque with gold plates, his name and team name on it, along with a photo that slides in and out of a plastic sleeve.
“Oh yeah. I was always bringing him to the rink with me, he could skate really well by the time he was five, maybe even earlier. He loved it, I was always teaching him things and working with him at the local rink.”
“Well, I think you did a great job. He’s an incredible player, much like yourself and your wife,” you comment, making Ted laugh.
“Thank you, thank you. I uh, I always knew he’d get into it, and I’m glad he did. Is that how you guys met? Through the Canes?”
“Yeah, kind of. I’m friends with one of the guys’ wives, and I met Jack at a fundraiser for the team. We hit it off and just kept talking.” Ted smiles as he listens to how you two met, and you are surprised that Jack never told them the story. Though he wasn’t one to tell all of his business, even to his parents.
Ted keeps showing you things and bringing up stories from his time in the NHL, mentioning that he has a ton more that’s not displayed packed away, having to make room for Jack, of course. About fifteen minutes later, Jack comes jogging down the stairs, now wearing an old Harvard sweatshirt, a smile still on his face.
“Hey, enjoying the collection?” He wonders, stepping close to you and wrapping his arm around your waist. Your own hand wraps around him, running up and down his back.
“It’s really amazing,” you say, looking up at him for a second before looking forward again, your eyes scanning over the vast wall of memorabilia. “Lot of history.”
“Lots of nostalgia too,” Jack replies, joining you in looking at the memories from his life. “I remember some of these games, like that one puck, it's from my dad’s last game ever, in the DEL. We traveled there to watch, it was my first time out of the country.”
You smile up at your boyfriend as he describes the memory, his dad also looking over at him with a proud expression on his face.
The two of them start sharing even more stories with you and you don’t even realize how late it’s gotten until Liz comes down to check on you guys.
“It’s almost nine o’clock, you guys have been down here for a while,” she walks over to where the three of you stand, her arms crossed over her chest.
“I think we lost track of time,” Ted states, doing the same as his son and throwing an arm around his wife’s waist, pulling her into his side. Jack looks down at you, silently asking if you are ready to go. With a simple nod, he sighs and looks up at his parents.
“We’re gonna head out for the night anyways, we have some plans for tomorrow in the city,” he says, parting from your side to say goodbye to his parents.
You do the same, hugging both of them and thanking them for inviting you over and for dinner. After a bit more conversation, Jack is guiding you back upstairs and out the door, after gathering your things.
Jack stops before opening the passenger side door, instead bringing you in for a tight hug.
“I’m so proud of you,” he whispers. “I know how nervous you were and I’m so glad that you stepped out of your comfort zone for the night.”
“Your parents are lovely so they made it pretty easy,” you chuckle softly against his chest, pulling away to lean up for a kiss. He gladly gives in, and neither of you are aware, but Ted and Liz are watching the two of you from the living room window.
“I love her already,” Liz comments to her husband. Ted nods and closes the curtain to give you two some privacy  again. “If he doesn’t marry her in the future, he’ll be making a huge mistake.”

Strawberries - Jack Drury
a/n: i reblogged this list of single word prompts and decided to write blurbs (or short fics) corresponding with those for the days of may :D each fic/blurb will have the word(s) included at least once, but not be solely based around it. i hope that makes sense lol
summary: you spend the night with jack for the first time at his place
word count: ~ 1.6k
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“So here’s the bathroom, I can show you how the shower works, extra towels are in that little closet if you need an extra, I um, I think that’s everything?” Jack’s nerves were through the roof as he showed you how to turn the shower on.
Tonight was the first time you were staying the night at his house, and he was beyond nervous yet excited. Your relationship was still fairly new and there were still firsts that the two of you have yet to have, and staying the night with each other was one.
It wasn’t exactly planned, but since there was a snowstorm that was not letting up anytime soon, you decided to just stay over, knowing there was no possibility that you’d be able to drive home. Jack was happy to have you stay, and he’d much rather have that than risk you getting into an accident.
You’ve been to his place plenty of times, but this was going to be new, sleeping beside him, him holding you as you slept, waking up to his sleepy eyes and morning voice.
“Jack, I’ve been here plenty of times,” you rest your hand on his arm, trying to calm him. “I’ll figure it out.” He sighs softly and nods, looking down at you.
“Um, I’ll have dinner ready in about twenty minutes, so take your time,” he smiles at you, pressing a kiss to your forehead as he leaves you to shower and get dressed in the set of clothes he got for you.
You take a ten minute shower, feeling the warm water run over your body, shielding you from the chilly air that was overtaking the house the more that the snow fell onto the city. After drying off and brushing your hair, you throw on a Cane’s t-shirt that Jack always wore and a pair of sweats that he hasn’t worn in years, and you finally go out to the kitchen to find Jack cooking and listening to Christmas music.
Approaching him, you wrap your arms around his waist, startling him for a moment. He laughs and sets the utensil down to place his hands over yours.
“Hey, you,” he whispers, turning around to hold you in his arms. “Have a good shower?”
“Mhm,” you mumble against his chest.
“Dinner should be ready soon,” he states, resting his head against yours, slowly starting to sway back and forth with you. “Dance with me?”
‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ by Frank Sinatra starts playing and Jack pulls away to look down at you, reaching for your hands and moving you to stand in the middle of the kitchen. A smile stretches on his lips as you start to slow dance with him, your eyes locked on his bright blue ones, a sight you could get lost in for hours.
The house was still aside from the boiling pasta behind him, the snow continuing to fall just outside the window, but nothing else mattered than you and him in this moment. Leaning forward, he presses a soft kiss to your cheek, nuzzling his nose against the same spot afterwards.
His phone goes off halfway through the song, signaling that the pasta was done cooking. Shyly, he moves away from you and goes back to the stove while you walk over to the large glass sliding door that leads to his back porch and yard, watching as the white flakes blanket the wooden beams and grass, though both of which were completely covered at this point.
The two of you enjoy a lovely dinner in the candlelit living room, which Jack was lovely enough to set up for a little romantic setting to watch Elf, to keep the Christmas mood up, of course.
“So, the house usually gets cold during the nights in winter, so I sleep with a few more blankets than usual,” Jack tells you once it was time to settle in for the night. “I uh, I just pile them on top of the comforter.”
Jack’s nerves were back and it was very obvious. He was trying his hardest to make sure you were comfortable, and he didn’t want you to feel unsafe or anything.
“Jack, hey,” you once again reach for his hands to bring him back down to earth. His breathing was slightly erratic as he looked at you, fear in his eyes. “Why are you so nervous, baby?”
He sighs and rubs his face with one hand, his face flushing deeply.
“Because I want everything to be perfect,” he whispers. “I want you to be comfortable and feel loved and safe here and it’s getting in my head. I-”
“I feel all of those things, tonight has been so wonderful, I’ve loved being here with you, and it has been so perfect.” Your words seem to ease him a little and he smiles at you. “I’m fine having more than one cover, as long as I get to fall asleep against your chest, I’m good.”
He laughs lightly at your last comment and he hugs you tightly to him.
“Thank you, darling,” he murmurs into your neck. “I’m sorry for being so erratic and everything, I just want the best for you.”
“And I have the best,” you plant a kiss on his cheek. “Don’t worry, Jack. Everything has been wonderful, and it’s no different than when I come over to hang out, other than the fact that we can fall asleep with each other.”
He blushes again and grabs your hands once more, bringing them up to kiss the back of them.
“You’re so sweet.”
Jack piles two extra blankets on top of his black comforter before helping you under the pile, crawling in after and pulling you right into his arms. He holds you tight, your face smushed against his chest, his scent surrounding you, an intoxicating mixture of his cologne, body wash, and laundry detergent that have been left on the fabrics of everything.
Your eyes flutter closed as his hand snakes underneath the bottom of your shirt, softly stroking the sliver of skin above your sweats on your lower back. His touch was so warm and gentle, it was enough to soothe you to sleep for the night.
Morning rolls around and as you slowly awake, you realize Jack’s arms are still around you, his eyes still closed, his eyelashes resting on his slightly tinted pink cheeks. It was a wonderful sight to wake up to, and it instantly puts a smile on your face.
Your hand raises to play with his blond hair, but your touch happens to wake him up. Instantly, regret fills you as his eyes peep open, but the look in them when he sees you, half asleep in front of him, is suddenly worth it.
“Well, you are a beautiful sight to wake up to,” he says, his voice rough with sleep, but a teasing hint makes its way in as well. Your face heats up in seconds, resulting in you hiding your face in his shoulder.
“Says you, who wakes up looking like a prince,” you comment. He kisses your temple and pulls away from you, stretching his arms above his head.
“Want some breakfast?” He asks, sitting up and giving you a nice view of his back muscles flexing underneath his shirt. Your hand trails up his back and you watch as he shivers a little, eliciting a giggle from you.
“That sounds good.”
“Alright, stay put, I’ll be back with some things in a few.” Turning back around, he places one more kiss on your forehead before trudging out of the room. You remain laying in bed, looking around his room at the pictures hung up and different trinkets laying on his bookshelf and dresser.
It was a typical man’s room, but you could tell it had a touch of Jack. Hockey memorabilia filled a single shelf of the mahogany bookshelf right next to the bed, photos of him and his dad and uncle scattered around, the puck from his first NHL goal in a display case; the idea of him displaying it proudly makes you grin.
You are so lost in your own thoughts, you don’t even hear him come back, until he’s setting a tray of food down in front of you.
“Alright, so we have toast and peanut butter with banana slices, there’s some extra toast in case you wanted some with jam, oh! I forgot strawberries! I know they’re your favorite.” The entire tray was filled with warm, delicious food. A batch of scrambled eggs, a couple fried eggs, toast, a bowl of fruit that didn’t include strawberries just yet, but had blueberries, blackberries, and bananas.
Jack darts out of the room before you’re able to say anything, and returns a couple minutes later with a bowl of freshly washed strawberries.
“There you are, lovely. Now, let’s enjoy breakfast in bed before we do absolutely nothing all day.”
You enjoy the breakfast that Jack made just for you and him, curled up in his bed, talking about what you wanted to do for the day, but seeing as the streets had yet to be cleared, there wasn’t much of an option than to just relax and maybe do some cleaning.
“So, does this mean you’re going to stay the night again?” He wonders with a lighthearted tone, after a full day of cleaning and no progress on the streets being plowed yet. It was nearing dinner time, and Jack was eager to spend another night with you and have you wake up in his arms again.
“Of course, if I’m going to be woken up with breakfast in bed again,” you tease back.

Drive-In Theater - Jack Drury
a/n: i finished this surprisingly quickly because jack brain rot is real 😵‍💫 i actually love how this turned out, aside from some small things, but i hope you like it! <3
summary: jack takes you to a drive-in movie with a very important question to ask
word count: 1.6k (exactly omg!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack was always full of surprises, despite not being a spontaneous kind of guy, he liked planning surprise dates for you and giving you hints here and there to see if you could guess it before you arrive at whatever location he chooses.
Sometimes they were simple, like a nice dinner at a restaurant you both love, or a day trip to another city for shopping, or even general dates like bowling or ice cream and watching the sunset in a nearby park.
This time around, Jack was planning something a bit more special, he was going to finally ask you to be his girlfriend. And to say he was nervous was an understatement. He wasn’t sure if you wanted the same, but since your dates were going well, he knew he wanted to take the relationship a step further.
He cared for you so much, and you were very special to him; he didn’t want to be apart from you and he definitely didn’t want to stop seeing you, so he needed to make this right.
“Okay, final clue, it involves movies,” Jack says as you pack your Jeep up for the date he has secretly planned.
“Is it a movie in the park?” You guess excitedly. There were blankets and a few snacks that he threw into the back seat, as well as a couple pillows.
“Not exactly,” he clicks his tongue, wrapping his arms around your waist after you shut the door.
“Well, it’s obviously not a theater since you are bringing blankets and pillows.”
“Nope, you’re out of guesses. Sorry, princess.” He pecks your nose and taps your bottom as he walks around to the driver’s seat, after opening your door for you, of course.
Groaning, you climb in and shut the door, looking over at him.
“You’re not nice,” you grumble in a teasing manner, eliciting a chuckle from him. He reaches over and grabs your hand, raising it to press a kiss to the back of it.
“It wouldn’t be fun if I wasn’t a little bit mysterious,” he jokes, putting the car in reverse to back out of the driveway.
The drive is quite peaceful, music playing softly in the background, Jack’s hand still in yours. It made your heart flutter thinking about it, just a simple touch from him was enough to send your mind haywire.
“Okay, close your eyes until I tell you to open them,” Jack lightly demands, looking over at you. You raise your eyebrows at him in disbelief.
“I’m not doing that,” you retaliate. He rolls his eyes and sighs, knowing you were hard to crack sometimes.
“Fine. You aren’t making this too much fun, you know?” He laughs, pulling up into a large parking lot, a massive movie screen set up and a bunch of cars parked in front of it.
“A drive-in movie?!” You squeal with joy, your jaw dropping as he pulls up to the attendant, ready to take his payment. He guides Jack on where to drive, specifically if he wants to park backwards, which was a different, designated area.
Following that route, there’s another attendant waving him over and telling him how to properly turn around and back into the spot. Jack follows the instructions with ease, and soon, you find yourself throwing the blankets and pillows in the trunk of your car, setting it all up nice and cozy for the two of you to relax in.
You brought some candy, but there is a food stand not too far from where you are parked, selling popcorn, hot dogs, and a few other things that you were absolutely going to take advantage of.
“What movie is showing?” You ask Jack, laying back and gazing up at him. Cars were still piling in, and the screen now displayed a countdown until how long it would be before it starts.
“There’s a couple, it’s The Truman Show and Big.”
“Two very different movies, but really good ones.” Jack nods and lays on his back with you, looking over at you with a small smile on his face.
As you and Jack talk, the countdown eventually gets to five minutes, and that’s when Jack decides it’s the best time to get in line for food, since it shortened quite a bit, everyone wanting to be in their cars and ready.
He returns with less than a minute to spare, with two hot dogs and a bucket of popcorn, also handing you a bottle of water. You sit up and take your hot dog from him, diverting your eyes to the screen just as the timer ends, going blank for a moment before showing an old 1950s ad, just like they used to show at drive-ins.
The Truman Show was first, a movie you’ve seen plenty of times, but still love nonetheless.
“I don’t think I’ve seen this before,” Jack whispers to you a little bit after it starts. You glance over at him in surprise.
“Really?” He nods, taking a bite of his food and looking over at you as well, his blue eyes glimmering in the glow from the screen. Speakers are planted near your car so you can clearly hear the audio, and you had a wonderful view of the screen, not objected by anything.
“Well, you’re in for a roller coaster of a movie,” you laugh, nudging him a little. He smiles and looks down at his lap, knowing he had to do this tonight or he was going to be scared to do it at any other point in time.
After finishing your food, you curl up under a blanket, laying on your sides and staring out the back of your Jeep. The temperature had dropped significantly, but thankfully, Jack told you to prepare for it, so you wore sweats and packed a sweatshirt. But being in his arms and so close to his body, you felt very comfy and safe, and most importantly, warm
Jack’s hand rubs up and down your back under the covers, his head resting on yours, a grin almost stained on his face at this point. Everything felt perfect, and he knew he was making the right decision. He just hoped you felt the same way.
When the first movie ends, there’s a half an hour intermission until the next one starts, giving people time to use the restrooms and get snacks, or just chill for the time being. You head to the bathrooms, the line being a little longer than expected, but that gave Jack time to clear his mind.
“Phew, come on, you can do this,” he whispers, trying to give himself a small pep talk, shaking his arms and upper body a little. “I can do this.” He scrolls on his phone until you get back, and when you do, you are crawling back under the covers and curling into his side.
“Miss me?” You tease, reaching up to press a kiss to his cheek. He blushes instantly, making you giggle softly and caress the cheek you just kissed.
“Little bit,” he gulps nervously. This was the perfect time. “Actually, on the topic of that, or uh, completely off topic, it’s not really related to that at all-”
“Jack?” You cut off his rambling, your eyebrows furrowing in confusion. “What’s wrong?” He pauses and takes a deep breath, gathering his thoughts.
“I wanna know if…uh, if you’d be my girlfriend?” His voice was shy and quiet, anxiety coursing through his body as he gets the question out in one go. Your heart races when the words slip from his mouth, taking time to process it. “Or, if you want to be my girlfriend. I’m not sure if you saw this going any further but I know that I can’t be-”
You silence him once more, although this time, it’s with a kiss. The air is knocked from his lungs but he falls into your touch within seconds, humming softly as he feels your lips against his.
“I would love to, Jack,” you breathe out against his mouth once you part from him. “I want to be your girlfriend.” Your words send Jack into a blushing mess, his smile widening across his entire face, his eyes lighting up as you agree to his question.
“You do?” He confirms, grabbing onto your cheek. Your own smile stretches at the corners of your lips, your head nodding.
“I would love nothing more,” you giggle, kissing him once more, for a bit longer this time.
“God, I was so scared to ask,” he admits after the kiss ends, his breathing slightly labored as he tries to catch his breath.
“Aw, really?” He nods and looks down at your hand, reaching to grab ahold of it, threading his fingers through yours.
“I was worried you would say no and the rest of the date would be very awkward,” he chuckles quietly, his eyes darting between your entwined hands and your eyes.
“I was wanting you to ask for a few dates now,” you admit to him. “I haven’t felt like this in a while, but I knew from the first date that I wanted to see you more…you know, officially.”
“My girl,” he teases, wrapping his arms around you now, pulling you into his chest. Your laughter fills the night air, crowded with the voices and laughter of many other people.
But you and Jack were in your own little world, in each other’s embrace, underneath your covers, over-the-moon with the newest change to your relationship, and both of you were eager for your, hopefully, long future together.

Things have been a bit rough lately, though, even that is an understatement. You were let go from your job around the same time that things between you and Jack went all wrong, and you felt like everything in the universe was against you at this point.
You were living in your apartment alone now, Jack having taken all of his things back to Jarvy’s place, where he was living before he moved in with you, since you’ve been dating for almost two years and it felt right at the time.
Jack was the one for you. He was the guy you thought you were going to marry, he was perfect, the love of your life. But a stupid fight over something that didn’t matter led to the both of you saying very hurtful things that you didn’t really mean, opening up some past wounds that shouldn’t have been opened. In turn, that led to the demise of your relationship, Jack moving out of your place, and avoiding you at all costs around the city.
It didn’t help that you lived within the same area and often frequented the same places, as much as you tried to limit your time around the city during the off-season, you sometimes saw him across the way, and always walk in the opposite direction. Today, though, your apartment was far too quiet and it was starting to get to you, so you decide to take a stroll around the city, enjoying the nice fall weather that finally started to settle in.
You park in a parking garage near your favorite coffee shop and slowly make your way there, ready to sit down and have a snack, to then stare out the window and people watch. The smell of the shop hits you as you walk in, sweet pastries mixed with the hearty scent of coffee grounds; its a comforting aroma and exactly the therapy you needed today.
But things take a turn when you see Jack just as you are ordering your drink. Being so thrown off, the barista stares at you in confusion, however you are so lost in the sight of your former lover. You take in his blond hair that still looks the same since you last remember. He’s shaved his facial hair recently, his features soft and relaxed as he reads his book in peace.
“Ma’am?” A voice breaks you out of your daze, unfortunately it catches Jack’s attention as well. His head shoots up and his bright blue eyes land on yours, his face falling when he sees you for the first time in months. “Would you like it here or to go?”
You finally turn back to the lady and softly apologize.
“To go, please,” you murmur, trying to look everywhere but where Jack sits. You quickly pay and go to stand over by the counter where they hand drinks out. You mess around on your phone, but you feel a pair of eyes on you the entire time, and you knew it was none other than Jack.
Thankfully, your name was called, leading you to grab your drink and pastry and rush out of the shop, your heart racing in your chest. Walking far away, you find a little park bench near a small mandmade lake and take a seat, closing your eyes and catching your breath.
You were not expecting to see him, you’ve done so well avoiding him as much as you could up until this point, and now everything came crashing back down. The memories you shared together, from attending weddings and other events to having date nights in your apartment or Seth’s place when he was out. How his lips and hands felt against you as he kissed you with so much passion, it made your head spin every time.
“(Y/N),” a voice calls out to you. Turning around, you see Jack heading towards you, his book tucked in his hand, his other stuffed in the pocket of his jeans. Your breath catches in your throat and you turn back around to face the water, allowing him to come and take a seat next to you.
It’s silent for a few moments as you adjust to being so close to him again.
“How have you been?” He asks, though he knows it’s most likely not the right question to ask right now.
“Rough,” you answer him honestly, taking a sip of your iced coffee. Jack nods and sighs awkwardly.
“Um, I want to apologize for my part in the way things went down,” he speaks up again not too long after. Your head turns to him and you wait for him to continue. “It was wrong of me to say those things and I instantly regretted them the second they left my mouth.”
You listen to his apology and the sincerity in his tone. Gazing over at him, you offer him a small grin.
“And I’m sorry for my part in everything. I shouldn’t have gotten angry and retaliated. I should have handled it like an adult, and I didn’t.” Jack mirrors your smile and looks down at the ground for a moment.
“Seth told me that you no longer have a job,” he states, swallowing thickly, not knowing if he was crossing a line. Upon seeing the look on your face, he feels terrible. “It slipped out when he was rambling while drunk one night.”
“Can’t ever trust the kid, can you?” You giggle, shaking your head. This also makes Jack laugh, a sound you missed hearing, that sends your heart into a frenzy. “But yeah, I was let go shortly after…things ended between us,” you whisper, staring back forward, feeling lost in the moment.
“I’m so sorry to hear that,” he clears his throat. The tension was thick between the two of you, and after a few more moments of silence hanging over you, he breaks it. “I miss you.”
Your head raises and whips to look at Jack, surprised by his sudden confession. His eyes were focused on you, his eyebrows furrowed together slightly in distress, it seems like.
“I miss you too,” you whisper, not even second guessing the words that slip from your mouth. As you sit there and stare at one another, he looks down at your hand, wanting to reach out and hold it, but he knew his boundaries.
“Would you…would you maybe want to grab some dinner and catch up?” He wonders, his face scrunching up, bracing for rejection. But your response surprises him and sends his heart soaring.
“I’d love to, Jack,” you smile, your eyes flickering all over his features to gauge his reaction. He immediately lights up and blushes a little.
“Great! Well, uh, do you have any plans tonight? Or is that too soon?”
“Tonight would be wonderful. We can try that new restaurant that just opened up, they supposedly have really good sandwiches.”
“Sounds perfect,” he smiles widely as he stands up from the bench. “So, I’ll see you tonight.”
“Yeah, see you later, Jack. I’m looking forward to it.”
