not that i haven't engaged in this myself in the past and all, but it is increasingly super weird to me when people base their assumptions of a person's knowledge and engagement with political events on what they post on tumblr or social media generally. like. i read the news daily and try to stay as up to date as i can on world events, but i don't post about it much on my tumblr because frankly it just doesn't feel like an appropriate venue for it most of the time

Social Media, Memes and….*sighs*, Malaysian Politics
Before I begin, I’d like to address that I am not particularly fond of Malaysian politics, but will try to explain this week’s topic through the mind of someone who regularly uses Social Media, just not for politics.

Generally, social media has been a primary source for politics in terms of sharing information and announcing unexpected political happenings. In Malaysia, it is known that most politicians are on social media applications such as Twitter and Instagram. With the platform presented to them, they’re able to advocate for their standing party and have the freedom to say what they want to say. Comparing traditional media and the media we consume now, it is certain how much social media has a one up the game for politics. News gets spread faster, and not only politicians are involved, but generally the people of the country who voted. Even those who didn’t vote, get the participate.
All thanks to the freedom of social media, and yes, this is where memes come in.

Let’s go back in time shall we? To the year 2020…
When everything Covid-19 related happened around the world and in Malaysia, Malaysia was also going through a political crisis where there was a sudden switch in the cabinet. There was an immediate meeting of leaders that was held on the 23rd February 2020, about 3 weeks before national lockdown. Crazy, right? Everything else was happening and these people decided to make even more controversies within the country. Then again, I was only 18, an avid user on Twitter whilst scrolling thru my feed of constant tweets about the changes happening. Leaders from several factions of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) were called to Sheraton Hotel, Petaling Jaya, which somehow, lead to Tun Mahathir Mohamad resigning as the Prime Minister, and then forming a whole new government under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Zainuddin 2020). This whole situation was then known as the “Sheraton Move”, where they planned to topple the PH government. To sum all that up, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin ended up being the Prime Minister, with the 3rd ever government we have in Malaysia (IISS 2020)…
…only to step down the following year on the 16th of August 2021 becoming the caretaker Prime Minister, with Ismail Sabri Yakoob replacing him as our Prime Minister, for now.
Okay, I’m going to stop here, it’s getting confusing, but you get the gist. Malaysian politics are a full on mess.
While I have to admit I only knew the full story today because of this week’s topic blog, memes have helped me somewhat understood the situation and honestly made the whole thing lighter and more engaging. Personally, I do think memes are this generation’s way of coping with almost anything, considering the fact that we’ve been told that we’re unserious and unaware. But, I don’t think that’s the case. With social media, the birth of memes were born. What better way to convey the slight snooze-fest of politics with none other than.. fun loving memes? Relating to last week’s post, our generation loves visuals, and memes just sums up all that. A whole situation or message being conveyed in 1 fulfilling meme. Quite entertaining if I do say so myself.
With that, I do believe that memes and politics somehow do go hand in hand together, especially in this decade. Jokes aside and all, considering memes are joke-filled, memes grab the attention of most social media users. People like me who aren’t really aware, get attracted to these memes posted only to be curious about the context behind it. For me, that works, and I’m sure it works for other people as well. One can put it in a way as if memes are a head start before a plane takes off, thus the plane being any types of news. In this case, political news.
Take this meme below, for example. I saw this about a year ago circulating on Twitter and was really confused at first on what was going on. From there I made the initiative to search up what all this was about, and it seemed like it was just Dr. Mahathir and his tricks, as usual.

I know you don't know kpop, so I don't know why I'm saying this to you, but it reminded me of former conversations you've had on here so I wanted to vent here i suppose. But I am a BTS fan and usually I avoid all fan discourse bc it is filled with a lot of anxiety and I don't really like that. Today one of my friends quoted a tweet from another fan who was expressing excitement for another group. And many fans were very against this fan bc the specific group they were supporting is a group who has had very serious scandals. Mostly, this was with one member of the group who participated in sex trafficking in S Korea. I followed this news when it first was reported and determined that the member was very much involved, but now I am horrified to see that a lot of the fans of the group believe that he is innocent and want the group to reunite as 5 (even though it is not possible as that group member is in jail). So, I am understanding of the reaction towards this fan expressing excitement for that group. The other group members have not made any comments on their band mates actions. This leads for many people to either certainly claim that the other members had no involvement or that they 100% knew and are just as guilty just by association. To me because I am not close to this situation, I am unsure on how things transpired and I'm not necessarily sure where the others stand, I can see wanting to believe one or the other but I feel it can be more complicated than that. I am sure that for fans of the group bc it has been a part of their life it is easier to just determine that they had no involvement and for others who are not to just say guilty by association. I know that twitter is not a place that these types of conversations are held in a productive manner, but it makes me sad to see how fans self identifying takes over anything else. For example, i see multiple people replying with "we don't want you here" "leave this fandom" "you Stan criminals" while the other side is focusing on "imagine hating someone for liking anything other than BTS", to me it feels like it is a competition of who has the more "morally right" fanbase and is not addressing anything at all about the harm that was done to women, nor how the other members responses, regardless of their level of knowledge of what their band mate was doing, could have also done harm.
You have made me think a lot about stories that fans may tell and how our worldviews exist within those stories and I know that you cannot really get a full picture from this snippet of text, but I just really needed to express this somewhere. Generally, I am not very good at expressing thoughts or feelings.

The most important point is beware people who think like that, operate like that, and try and persuade other people to operate like that. Beware cultures and platforms that encourage it.
I think it's worth naming the two different parts of what was going on. The first is the utterly unserious approach to politics. Stan approaches to politics are deeply toxic, because rather than being centred around the impact of power and the distribution on people's lives, they're centred around standom. You see versions of this all the time (the most obvious at the moment is people who have convinced themselves that Olivia has committed some terrible political sin, but that Harry is amazing. There is literally no serious political position you could take where you could hold that view).
Those people are just using politics to feed the basic machine of their approach to fandom: black and white thinking. The fundamental mindset of standom is that the person I stan (and therefore me) is good and people I don't stan (and therefore other people) are bad. In particular, it's an inability to sit with the idea that you, or someone you identify with, might be anything other than 'good'. It's a logic that will eat up everything in its path, is really fucking dangerous when people are collectively reinforcing the story they're telling, and is antithetical to any curiosity, connection, or understanding.
I understand the urge to get to the bottom of some twitter explosion and be like 'I must know who is actually right and who is actually wrong). I've definitely done it before and it's one of the attractions of the platform. I think it's important to understand that for a lot of people the judging is the important part not the questioning.
My advice is to try and find people and ways of engaging with fandom that operate a little differently, rather than try and decide what's right in an arena built on the rotten foundations of black and white thinking.
