HI POOKIEE IM BACKK WITH ANOTHER SILLY IDEA😋😋😍(lets ignore the fact that all my requests have been ninjago related)
Basically hc's with the ninja who have a little sibling(the reader) and they have these like witch powers that they're trying to control. The ninja of that scenario try to help the reader with various training sessions, leading them to be a mentor for them. When the reader gets the hang of their powers the ninja are reminded of a memory of their childhood where the reader helped the ninja as children in a really dark time and the ninja see the training sessions as repayment for the readers help all those years ago.
THATS IT HOPEFULLY IT MADE SENSE!!! ANYWAYS BYE POOKIE HOPE YOURE DOING GREAT AND REMEMBER ILYYYY😘😘😘😍😍😍👻👻👻
YAY you’re back!! Always good to hear from u <33
Ninjago - Being the Ninjas’ Little Witch Sister
Zane
When you first ask him to train you, he’s a bit surprised
Of course he agrees though
He proves to be a very patient teacher, both with you and himself as you both continue to learn
He reads up on magic extensively to better know how to help you
He also frequently consults master Wu
If there’s something he doesn’t know, he’ll just tell you to do something else while he researches it
He doesn’t want you doing anything he isn’t able to predict/help you with
Both for your safety and for the sake of your surroundings
As you master concepts, he moves on to progressively harder ones until you’re a skilled witch
His meticulous teaching would have rubbed off on you, so you rarely make mistakes, doing things by the book
Or should I say grimoire?
One day, when he’s watching you perform a healing spell on an old man, he remembers the first time you used your powers
It was when Dr. Julien fell down the stairs
Zane remembers hearing him cry out in pain; the sound still haunts him to this day
He was terrified that his father was fatally wounded
But when he rushed to his side, you were already there, holding his wrinkled hands with yours, which were glowing
You had unintentionally used a healing spell
If you hadn’t, Dr. Julien might have actually been seriously hurt
Zane’s forever thankful for that, and this forever thankful for you
Kai
He’s stoked that you want him to teach you
He always thought your powers were cool, and he’s excited to test their limits with you
He always pushes you hard, which can get a little exhausting
Eventually he’ll ease up a little as he realizes that you need rest
If there’s something he doesn’t know, he encourages you to try it anyway
Meanwhile he’s hiding behind a metal shield in the corner
You learn through experimentation, which leads to many, many failures
But Kai never stops encouraging you to keep trying, and eventually you master your powers
You start joining the ninjas on missions, and one time you used a spell that knocked an entire posse of attackers on their backs
Kai stared at you with wide eyes, flashing back to the time you used a similar spell
It was back at the blacksmith shop; a particularly obnoxious customer was insisting that he “test” a sword
He ended up snatching it and running at Nya with the clear intention of nabbing her
It was then that you used the spell, downing the assailant
Kai had stared at you with the same wide eyes back then
But now he smiled, feeling grateful that you were always there to help protect those closest to you
Jay
Much like Kai, he’s more than thrilled to mentor you
Most of his teaching consists of him insisting you try things he’s seen in movies and comics
Which makes lessons fun, but disappointing at times when you can’t figure things out
In his excitement sometimes he’ll insist you try your spells on him
This has led to the both of you getting hurt many times
Yet neither of you seem to learn your lesson
He’s quick in getting you out on the field
He wants you to be able to test more dangerous things, and he sees the battlefield as the perfect spot to do so
So he’ll take you along on missions pretty early on, making sure you stick to his side so he can protect you
But when your moment comes, he yanks you forward and pushes you towards the enemy like a rag doll
The slight panic this induces in you amplifies your spells
Once you used a spell that released a bright flash of light at the enemy, blinding them
Jay recognizes the spell
It was much smaller at the time, but you had used it when you were both kids
The power was out at the junkyard, and you were both alone while Ed and Edna went to fix the fuse
Jay was terrified in the dark; he was literally about to have a panic attack when your little cupped hands summoned a ball of light
Mesmerized, he forgot his panic, instead smiling hugely at you
He claps you on the back when he remembers that moment, silently beaming with pride at all the progress you’ve made
Cole
He thinks being a magic mentor sounds pretty cool, so of course he agrees when you ask for some lessons
He’s a really chill teacher; almost to an annoying extent
If there’s something he doesn’t know, he just shrugs and asks what you think
(Which happens more often than you’d like)
He won’t encourage you to try more dangerous things until you’re ready though
He always reminds you to be careful and not overwork yourself
Progress is slow, partly because you’re pretty much guiding your own training
He’s just there to support you
Eventually he decides that you’re ready for some real action
Well. Long story short you ended up falling off a cliff with him
But you used a spell that froze you midair right before you hit the ground
You both planted your feet safely on the ground, quaking from the adrenaline
Cole is reminded of a strikingly similar moment from your childhood
You were rehearsing a dance routine on stage
He wasn’t paying attention, and he ended up twirling right off the stage
But luckily you were there, and you froze him in the air when his face was mere inches from the floor
He had hugged and thanked you profusely that day, and he did the same now, lifting you off your shaky feet and kissing your cheek endlessly
Lloyd
He has some experience with magic, but not enough to make him a very competent teacher
He’s humble when he teaches you, always admitting when he isn’t sure
He’ll go with you to find out more when there’s something he doesn’t know
You always learn together :)
He makes sure you don’t push yourself too hard; he knows what that’s like, and it isn’t fun
So your training is a little slow but very steady
He lets you decide when you’re ready to go on missions
He trusts you to know your own capabilities, so if you think you can hold your own, then you can hold your own
That doesn’t mean he’s any less impressed when you turn your opponent into a ferret
He remembers when you pulled a similar move several years ago
You were both cornered by bullies, with Lloyd in front, trying to protect you
Suddenly you pushed past him, pointing your finger at the main culprit and turning him into a mouse
The effect only lasted a few seconds, but it was enough for you both to get away
Lloyd laughed aloud at the memory, ruffling your hair proudly
Nya
At first she readily agrees to help train you
But as time progresses, it becomes obvious how incompetent you both are in magical knowledge
She knows a bit, but not nearly enough to coach a fledgling witch
She gets almost as frustrated as you when you try and fail to learn spells
But she calls on her knowledge from her own training, and she realizes that first she needs to fix your attitudes
So you both adopt a more “go with the flow”-esque style, and the spells start clicking
You both glow with excitement at each new mastered concept
High fives all around!! :D
She’s eager to get you on the battlefield; she knows how much it sucks to have to wait
You come to a massive gorge on your first mission, one too big to jump across
You use your magic to create a bridge, allowing everyone to cross safely
As she crosses, Nya recalls seeing a similar miracle performed by you in the past
You had both gone out to pick flowers in the woods
There was a flash flood while you were out, and the little creek you had to cross to get home had become a raging cascade of impassable muddy water
But you had used your little bridge spell, and you both made it safely home
Nya remembers that day fondly, and takes much pride in knowing how far you’ve come since then

Thank you for your request my love!! And thanks for reading, take care little squirrels <33

@squib-2006 honkai IS amazing I love it so much the story the characters guehdhehhb
It’s mostly just a silly fun idea rn with barely coherent concepts tumbling around my mind, sadly I don’t think anything will come out of it bc I don’t think there’s much demand for it :( the curse of having a special interest and a hyperfixation that are worlds apart.
so obviously the origin story for ninjago would need to be altered a bit, like instead of the overlord it was some sort of herrscher-esque (though much more powerful) conscience that awoke and with it started the endless honkai as this AUs form of the balance yk yk.
Anyways just like in the game the honkai are a constant force that evolve and change, but instead of the silly abstract monsters and zombies we see in the honkai universe they take on other forms like stone warriors, nindroids (via corrupting the code or whatever) yada yada (maybe the serpentine?? Toying with the idea that a sentient species was born as a result of the honkai or even honkai infections in humans) with the battle between the FSM and the overlord and the first serpentine war being major honkai eruption events that resulted in the birth of the herrschers and their successors one by one, i e, the elemental masters.
I don’t really know how the fsm would work in this universe, maybe as like a fruit of like an equivalent to the imaginary tree or whatever and used his creation powers to craft the land and humanity was then born, but upon doing so the overlord (I feel like they’d have a different name since it’d be more of a sentient entity, maybe the overlord themself was like also a fruit of the imaginary tree?? And essentially the first herrscher??) also came into being and with it the honkai were born and spread across the island. The fsm saw this disaster and he gathered some people he saw potential in, gifting them temporary powers either in the form of artifacts or whatever to help him fight back the honkai spread. In this universe they were actually successful in killing the overlord (for good. Kind of.) and the honkai vanished
…until only a few years later when a massive energy spike disrupted the entire world, and one of his generals (I e one of the first elemental masters) became the first, well, originally human herrscher. The honkai came back in full force and more herrschers were born from both strangers and allies alike until the entirety of the dark island side of ninjago was compromised and the fsm made the decision to seal the herrschers and break apart the island to prevent the spread, essentially abandoning that part of the population (were there survivors? Is there still civilization on the dark island that managed to beat back the honkai and start villages and communities that are bitter and consider the currently sealed herrschers their chance at vengeance? Who knows!) and trying to forget.
fast forward to the serpentine war. The serpentine being either another group of people like usual or having smthn to do with the honkai, I dunno. I think the honkai approach is more interesting personally and like exploring a sentient and fully intelligent honkai being but I’m not sure. The serpentine and humans are afraid and tense and Chen pulls strings (Chen might be like a sort of herrscher Stan but for his own ambitions in this AU instead of anacondrai stan) and it erupts into a war. Wu had been preparing since in this AU Morro would become a herrscher host after the whole golden weapons fiasco and he, knowing the last time this happened was aware that it could signal an oncoming of honkai formed the elemental alliance as a countermeasure (with the elemental alliance essentially being Valkyrie equivalents given special powers, weapons, artifacts etc. to help the fight against the honkai) (also not fully related but this is honkai x ninjago so yeah wu kills Morro so now Morro is justified) though unlike with the FSM this alliance would be much less strained and more friendly, with many familial bonds being developed while they fought side by side. At first they just dealt with the occasional stray honkai and politics and such, until Chen initiated the war. At some point Earth (no clue what the master of earths name would be here - it’s worth noting that in this AU none of the EMs are inherently related since herrschers jump between hosts and don’t need blood relations to do so, though some might be for plot purposes) begins to feel sympathetic for the serpentine, jumpstarted by Chens influence, and defects to fight on their side of the war, at some point being awakened as a herrscher or causing a herrscher awakening (why not both? The EA (omg that’s actually the abbreviation for elemental alliance that’s hilarious) being forced to watch as one of their own becomes a herrscher as a result of betrayal (maybe they were super close to earth..) and getting caught in the middle of a massive honkai event that decimates the environment. No longer is it about the war, the humans and anacondrai are both trying to flee and save as many of their own as they can now that the herrschers are going ballistic at each other, having completely forgotten anything else around them… mmm… delicious angst)
Earth is eventually killed (The new host is chosen surprisingly quickly as a little girl… cough cough Lilly cough cough) and the serpentine are sealed (maybe alongside other ems? I dunno, the war is messy and I don’t feel like fleshing it out too much) using the same techniques the fsm used to seal the herrschers on the dark island and all is well until suddenly the time twins cause a massive honkai event and become herrschers - intentionally - and the ea manage to like I dunno subdue them boring answer or snap them out of it but realize they chose this route yada yada angst betrayal sadness trust issues blah blah blah after a long fight since they lost most of their numbers (I only highlighted earth and an anonymous em but there were probably casualties, not all ems will be herrschers simply because that’d be too many herrschers and it’d get stale) yeah it ends in the time vortex but Krux breaks free of it using herrscher powers or whatever Acronix was in a coma or smthn so that’s why he didn’t do the same and then Krux begins his evil master plan of conquering the world using an army of controlled honkai and his own herrscher powers (somehow Krux is able to control himself as a herrscher I dunno I told u this is ideas jumble)
yeah uh anyways Wu is like “finally it’s over” then Lilly in a far off city hears him and throws a temper tantrum to which he goes “OH MY GOD WHAT THE HECK NOT ANOTHER HERRSCHER” and he gets there and it’s just a child causing mildly threatening honkai quakes. Thought she might have caused her parents to abandon her. She’s not doing any massive damage right now and Wu knows that some people would argue it would probably be better for the world in the future to.. coughs.. LOOK GUYS THIS IS A HONKAI X NINJAGO AU I HAVE TO SAY IT it would be better to just to get rid of her now so that they don’t have to deal with another major honkai event in the future (plus she’s an orphan) …but Wu doesn’t have the heart to do that again after everything he lost to the war and with Morro and he can’t bring himself to ever be able to justify that action while looking at this abandoned child who just so happened to be a herrscher so Wu does what Wu does and that’s take her in and bring her to the monastery. (god Wu’s becoming the Fu Hua of this AU isn’t he… I mean he’d be a less cold fu hua but still)
Lilly is a unique case in that she’s been a herrscher since she was a child and Wu is likely trying to tutor her in either restraining or controlling it so she’d eventually grow to have more of a control over her powers somehow, though she’d still be capable of getting lost in them and basically tethers on a brink between the honkai influence and her humanity and physically can not tell the difference between them, so she’s still fairly destructive and can be dangerous. Lilly still does everything she does in canon though maybe with more like character arc n stuff but she still dies young. Either due to her unique herrscher case somehow or honkai infection or whatever. But it doesn’t pass to a new host entirely.
WHICH BRINGS US TO THE NINJA AT LONG LAST
Cole is one of the rare cases of being a blood relative to a herrscher (since Lilly is important to his character and Lilly has her own story so) He’s not.. fully.. a herrscher?? But also he’s not NOT a herrscher. He does have an inherently shorter lifespan because, yk, kinda human + kinda god of honkai thingy doesn’t mix well and he probably suffers some form of long term honkai infection that will slowly claim his body. Nobody really knows the extent of the whole partial herrscher or just honkai thingymajig (and that’s my way of saying I don’t feel like figuring it out.) it’d probably tie into his plot with Lou n stuff. Lou knows obviously, I dunno if the ninja (or even Cole himself) would. He had a honkai outburst after Lilly’s death and that’s how Wu found him (Wu wasn’t aware of Cole since Lilly cut ties with him before that so that she could lead a normal life and he wanted to honor her wishes as best he could, and also bc Lilly knows Wu knows she’s a herrscher and she wanted to protect Cole from the consequences of that if anybody else found out and decided to take drastic measures)
Kai and Nya are mostly ordinary asides from Ray and Maya being survivors of the EA who were proficient in creating weapons used by the elemental alliance. Oh yeah Ray and Maya were still kidnapped by Krux in this btw, and Kai and Nya still have the plots they have in the show. Just like most of the ninja they eventually become herrscher hosts (or just Nya so that Kai can be the token human in all universes, but I don’t know.)
Jay was still raised by Ed and Edna in the junkyard. Lib was probably turned into a herrscher after his birth and decided she couldn’t raise him or went missing for other reasons after the war, possibly went insane. Anyways I feel like Jay might have been a child herrscher kinda. He’d just randomly go full electric and his parents chalked it up to a weird quirk. Somehow. He has no clue of this and it only gets worse as he grows up and he starts feeling scared of himself and runs away without a goal except to protect his parents and then he meets Wu. He probably was given an herrscher core instead of being, like “natural born” since I don’t think he’d get to be in any major honkai events in the desert but I dunno, so he’d probably have an alternate persona.
Zane I have two ideas for: 1. He was a child from the serpentine war who survived but with severe honkai infection and had cybernetic replacements to prolong his lifespan, with a herrscher core being used to power him as some sort of experiment. The core and stuff made it so he didn’t age. 2: he was built entirely as a robot, the herrscher core being used as a power source but as a side effect caused him to gain a conscience. He probably doesn’t remember anything of the herrschers/his previous life beyond flashes. The herrscher core gives him his ice power thingymajig.
I’m gonna b honest I have NO CLUE about Lloyd. Like at all. Cshfhsf I’m sorry-
I feel as though with herrscher powers n stuff -
Cole would have powers for the most part since S1 but not really on a herrscher scale bc yknow. Lilly and what not. I think he’d have a herrscher awakening but not as the herrscher of earth but like an offshoot.. like maybe in S5 with his ghost thingy..? And obviously S13.
I think it’d be funny if Kai is the token human and just relies on Valkyrie weapons n stuff. No powers for him. :) but if he did have one it’d be s7.
Nya was ALWAYS a Valkyrie in this AU but she didn’t think she was a herrscher for like the longest time up until S5. Here she makes the choice to try and seal her herrscher self away nd keep going as just a Valkyrie but eventually gives into it during S14.
Zane regularly experiences snippets of his prev life that he’s forgotten or sights from his herrscher core as like a special nifty power or whatever but his first outbreak was during S3 and he had a worse one in S11 where his memories, ironically enough, were instead reverted back to whatever his old persona was and he became the ice emperor over the poor never realm and introduced the honkai to them.
Jay I dunno really since he’d have an alternate persona and it’s hard to cram that into his focus seasons. No clue how the seasons plots would go at ALL in general.
..this post was way longer than I planned but yeah scrambled mess of thoughts. Also might not make sense since I’m only on Taixuan Dream story wise so. Yeah. This AU would have a ton of hurt/comfort, angst and character interactions and stuff though bc yk it’s a honkai AU. I have no clue how the plot would go pls help this post alone took forever. I didn’t even mention garmadon and his whole situation because I dunno.

lloyd's characterisation
Saw a post about how Lloyd wasn't bland a while ago, and how his issues come from him not being able to shine in the limelight, and kinda got inspired by that
...I think OP got the cause and effect backwards here. If you have a character of no ideas, you're just not going to write about them. As boneheaded as the writers can sometimes be, I think it's a solid bet that when a writer doesn't think they have an interesting character, they don't write about them.
And the points they bring up in response to him being bland is that like 'he got excited about palm fronds' and such in S6 and was a bit stubborn, but like. That's all very basic stuff compared to what the rest of the cast was like? Yeah, that's technically better than nothing, but that's on par with like. What someone like Dr Julien or Pixal gets. It shouldn't be the basis to which you consider a MAIN CHARACTER interesting
like the writers can either settle on lloyd as a side character OR force him to be more interesting if they keep dragging him out for awesome moments. and they sure as hell aren't going to stop showing off the series' green ninja so-
Honestly this all really bugs me because Lloyd DID have an interesting character pre-aging which the writers totally dropped. I still haven't forgotten the episode where the ninja fall behind in their artifact-hunting and he simply suggests they steal the other fangblades back. It's a very creative solution, and it stands out in a really nice contrast to season 1's very formulaic, mandated storytelling that we could all see happening.
That and him being the green ninja instead of the main characters really felt like some of the writers going, 'Hey, we kinda all know where this is going to end up, but that's what we're given. Why not have some fun with it?'
This led to Lloyd being always characterised as savvy in early Ninjago, intentionally or otherwise. He was kind of the writers' way of poking fun at the very silly premise of the whole thing!! and that was fun!! why did they stop doing that??
Anyways. My point is that Lloyd should've been the one character allowed to dunk on everything in this show (and also occasionally get dunked on himself for being a fairly stereotypical kid chosen one). From the concept of destiny to some of the villains' stupider plans to the fact Wu doesn't tell the ninja shit because the writers can't think of how to come up with new threatening villains.
It'd fit pretty organically into the fact he basically had his childhood and father taken away from all this destiny stuff too, instead of the writers just using him and his trauma and daddy issues as a punching bag in like S8-10. Hell, it'd work well with how he's 'sort of a main character but only ever gets stapled to the rest of the ninja' a lot of the time? It'd give you a lot more self-awareness and humour in some of the later seasons of the show, which take themselves way too seriously.

Ninjago Season 11 thoughts so far...
(also, I’m back from the grave :)
Tumblr media
So, how’s the fandom been? I haven’t been on for forever, but I just finished watching through episode 8, and just felt my analysis instincts flare up.
So, where to start? how about the format. Yes, ten minute episodes! As for me, I like it. At least for this season. It’s a nice change of pace, and definitely allows more time for character focused episodes… I just wish they would put that focus on the main characters rather than just lumping them all into a group but… whatever. I think the two side character focus episodes we got were cute, and a nice look into ninjago city. Kinda took me back to when we all did that ninjago city role play. It was great to see the purple ninja again! and Dareth’s cameo was real nice! So yeah, the format is fine, but uh… let’s talk about the writing this season, shall we?
(WARNING: WALL OF TEXT AHEAD)
What… happened? To these characters? To their relationships? To their… personalities, to their complexities? Like, this all feels so super watered down. Not too many of the jokes land real well. Sometimes it wants to be super self aware, and other times it wants to be dumb kid humor. Like… what am I watching? Sensei Wu feels… off. Too goofy. Extra loud and in your face too make all the little kids laugh. Nya and Jay don’t really acknowledge each other except the two totally random times Jay says “I love you”. Pixal is just Nya from season 1, but with no personality (also, on a personal note, not nearly enough pixal ;). Zane doesn’t say a WORD to her, and is ULTRA watered down nindroid robot boy. It hurts! They said this would be like a fresh start sort of thing, but that doesn’t mean taking away the personality, interaction and complexity, that means introducing those characters, interactions and complexities for a new audience.
I will say though, the stuff they added in new, works. Clutch powers, awesome. relatable. Dare I say, Dareth 2.0? The new Snake witch lady who I can’t remember the name of at the moment, awesome! It’s so great to have another main female villain! And she’s threatening, and likable, and kinda funny sometimes. She reminds me a lot of the peacock from kung fu panda 2 (which I also can’t remember the name of). I think she’s great. Can’t wait to see more of her. I like the creepy pyramid, with snake mummys! There are a lot of good things about this new season, just… not the main characters. Which sucks, cuz last season they were SO GOOD!
Last season was 80 minutes of content. I’ve seen 80 minutes of content from this season, and it pales in comparison as far as character development. Season 10 found time for everyone to shine individually and have personal development in just 4 episodes. This season has 8 episodes, and none of our main characters feel like real individuals. they’re just one big group of ninja, with the exception of maybe Jay as the “super goofy silly” one. Maybe the season gets better, idk, but so far, I’m kinda disappointed.
You know what the problem is? Ninjago tried to do a complete 180. It tried to go from a dark, serious show with heavy continuity between seasons, and adult themes, to a fun goofy kids show with steaks that aren’t too real and characters that are over the top and easy to grasp. Ninjago did that one time. It was called Wu’s Tea, and most of us rejected that so hard there's debate around whether it's even canon. And to be honest, that’s what the first few episodes felt like: Wu’s Tea. That’s not a good sign. Sorry to say, but revamping Ninjago for new and younger viewers, while completely changing from the dark tone it had slowly and carefully lured the fandom into maybe wasn’t the best direction for the show to go. Again, maybe it gets way better. I don’t know yet. But as of right now it feels kinda hollow.
I have this sinking feeling in my gut that ninjago is dying. Not because of the season or anything, just because it’s been going for so long, and has lost momentum viewership wise. How many times have they tried to revamp? Season 8 with the redesigns, there was the whole legacy/ tales from the monastery thing, and now this season? Hell, our lore is so complicated, we had to have a whole sub season dedicated to recapping it. Idk. maybe I’m just in a pessimistic place right now. Those are my thoughts.
On a lighter note, how have you guys been? I feel like I’ve been out of it for so long. We’ve been in the process of moving, and will still be for the next month or so, so don’t be surprised if I disappear again. Idk if there’s a Wizard 101 fandom still active, but I’ve been playing it, and have an urge to write a screenplay? Like, wouldn’t this make a great movie? How had this not been turned into a movie? Not even the game, just the concept of the game itself? I’m also inclined to make a video essay cuz it’s WAY deep for a kid’s wizarding game. Also, kung fu panda? More specifically humanized kung fu panda has mad potential for an adorable Crane X Viper ship. Is that just me? I might write a one shot, idk. Also, svtfoe ending?! Gumball ending?!?? And I am in need of new ducktales. I think that’s all I needed to get out of my system.
okay bye

I watched Lego Ninjago movie and I would say I probably should have watched it before watching the show so I didn’t go in with expectations but after having sat through it, I can tell you it would NOT have helped. At all. This is a first viewing off the cuff sort of thing so. Yeah. Anyway. My three positive points and then my parafraphs of negatives:
1) Garmadon’s VA is the only one giving anything. That’s technically a positive and a negative but I mean at least he’s giving something because no one else is carrying any weight.
2). I laughed a couple times but I’m not even sure that warrants a positive.
3) I guess they took the movie designs and utilized them in show to an extent? Idk how that went down in the real world and I haven’t exactly researched it but I mean I guess that was a plus, I like how the designs from the movie translated into the show they look nice.
Now Negatives:
1) This is so boring. As a Ninjago movie, as a Lego movie, as a normal movie. This is a dull ‘nothing’ script. More happens in one of the 11 minute episodes of the show than happens in this movie. An almost 2 hour runtime is wasted. And that sucks because like the concept has potential. Even if it would still completely be a different continuity like the idea is there and it’s decently solid. But they just barely lean into it. It’s not even that funny. It’s just a sad shell of a movie. The groundwork is there but they didn’t give it any support so it collapses on itself.
2) The voice acting is awful. Again, Garmadon’s VA is the only one giving any energy. I guess Lloyd’s va is alright but like just barely, and that’s being nice. I don’t know if they had poor direction or what but given the script I’d be just cashing in my paycheck too.
3) The characters are underutilized. Large casts in movies are hit or miss. And it’s something I’m always kind of critical of. Lego movies/games always are large parodies of properties, making lighthearted fun of the movies we enjoy but the problem is, all of the properties they do that with aren’t Lego to begin with. Ninjago is. There were ways they could have made fun parodies of these characters but as it stands they just made them really sad. They could have really leaned into what most made them them but they didn’t even do that (no whatever they were trying to do with Zane doesn’t count). And it’s hardly a gripe you can have because they were just background filler anyway. These guys did nothing. Lego Movie had a similar sized cast but everyone had something to say and do. We at least have enough to know and understand them as characters. The same courtesy wasn’t given to these characters. All we know is Zane is robot. Cole says a rock joke. And that’s it. So it’s like do I be upset about their poor characterization or their underutilization? Yes??
4) It’s so quiet. I don’t know if it was just my speakers or the copy of the movie I was watching but there’s an absence of background ambience and musical score. Like it’s there occasionally but it’s absent enough that it was distracting and I found myself trying to look for it. The thing with a musical score is it sort of is often lost. You’re not focusing on it in the moment, but it’s a part of the scene as a whole. The score adds to the weight, the emotion, the moment. It’s supposed to be a key to the viewer, an added insight into the emotions of your characters. Subtle and subliminal. You aren’t so keenly aware of it that it takes you out of the moment, but when it’s absent it’s a little jarring than you would initially believe.
5) The real world lead in was unnecessary and poorly connected. They should have just taken the lego batman approach and made a silly lego movie with legos. That’s not wholly a negative but it’s true.
