Quarantine, Day 31
Very sunny out today, and for once the virulent children are not out tempting fate with their shrieking play. Social distancing has come very slowly to our apartment complex, as late as early this past week I had to explain to my neighbor that no, my son could not come over to play with her daughter, and then explain again when the daughter came to our door. Jeezy Creezy, people! Last night, since it was the last official night of "spring break" and because he has kept his room clean all week, I let the kiddo stay up until we went to bed, which wound up being around 2am. He woke up before either of us this morning, came out to the living room, and slept on the couch until nearly 11. But it was fun. We watched television and read books and ate brownies.
Today I have been organizing, for certain values of organizing, my yarn arts supplies. Ever since we moved in here, a year and a half ago now, my yarn and notions have been spread between a bin shelf in the living room, another one in the kitten room, and a box of yarn in my closet. This Christmas my mother in law gifted me a very excellent knitting tote with lots of spaces for projects, extra yarn, and supplies. It's not big enough for even a fraction of the yarn, of course, but it's great for holding hooks, needles, scissors, counters, and all the other stuff that makes knitting and crochet easier. Unfortunately when I went to load it up, I realized that many of my supplies had gone astray, especially my interchangeable needles, which I have since found all over the house, mainly in half-finished projects from previous years. (Starting things is so much more fun than finishing them!) So as I've been organizing, I've also been looking up old patterns and finishing up old works in progress. I currently have nearly all of my needles back in their case, plus I found my crochet hook carrier with all the hooks I haven't been able to find for months. Excellent progress!
Yesterday's big excitement was driving to Williamsburg for the "farmer's market." I love their market, but of course it is shut down for the duration. The market association moved online, put up a menu of items being sold by different vendors, and arranged for online sales with delivery or pickup. I pulled up, gave my name, and they put the stuff right into my trunk, all very socially distant! I now have two butternut squash a dozen baby herb plants for my balcony, and thirteen beautiful multicolor eggs. Happy Easter to me!
Six days left until bar exam results come out. Do you remember in February when I made daily updates about my bar study, how anxious I was, how much it consumed my life? Now it hardly seems like it matters at all. I want to have passed, obviously, but it barely seems, I dunno, relevant right now. Like an artifact from a whole other time in my life. In the last days before the exam, I socialized a little on Reddit with other examinees-to-be, because it was nice to all stress out together in those last weeks of February. One poster from California was freaking out all that last week because the test administrators would not allow the wearing of face masks, and the risk of contagion with so many people in one room was unacceptable. We all, without exception, thought that person was nuts. Like literally, like the stress of the test was manifesting itself through inflated fears of a disease that wasn't even in this country.  I think about that person a lot now. They never did come back to say they told us so.
My birthday is coming up too, and that's at least more fun to think about. Thirty-eight does feel like kind of a lot, but it's not a milestone birthday and I'm at least old enough to not be heartbroken not to have a party. (SO glad that my son's tenth birthday was in January and we went all out then!) I've got a cake mix and my favorite frosting, and ingredients for a birthday dinner on my aspirational shopping list. The shopping list has grown even more, the more days that pass since our last shopping pickup. Ten days now, and even that was a fairly small one, just perishable essentials and hygiene. We're going to have to do something fairly soon because the milk is about to go over, and though I have cans of evaporated, it is not the same. One cannot eat birthday cake without cold milk, it's just not right. I figure we can probably go four more days without more than mild psychological suffering, and I just won't think about the fact that this is an Easter with no candy.
Last night was the Good Friday Tenebrae service at church, one that I try not to miss. Online this year obviously, so I streamed it in the bedroom with five Ikea tealights and a fleece blanket for the shroud. The kiddo helped me with the candles (he is a huuuge fan of lighting and blowing out candles) and was surprisingly reverent during the service. We covered the candles and I promised him he can light them again Easter morning. As for the Easter basket, maybe we'll just go all out for Cinco de Mayo.

A Million (OK, About 60) Words for Sugar
Tumblr media
Design by Dana Davenport
It’s been a rough decade for sugar. The sweet stuff has a dark side, as emerging research suggests it may play a role in weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and liver disease.
While it’s not all bad, most people are eating waaaay too much. The typical American eats 17 teaspoons of added sugar every day. That adds up to… wait for it… 57 pounds of added sugar per year!
That’s about 1/3 cup per day, in case you’d prefer to just scoop it out of the bag and eat it by the spoonful, Mary Poppins-style.
And while research suggests that sugar consumption has been decreasing across the board, cutting added sugar can be really difficult because it has about a billion ingredient label aliases that allow it to slide by undetected.
Here’s a guide to what exactly added sugar is, the many names for added sugar, and some easy ways to cut your added sugar intake.
Sugar 101
Let’s go to sugar school real quick. Carbohydrates are made of long chains of individual sugar molecules. (Yup, even the carbs in foods that don’t taste sweet, like potatoes, pasta, and rice.)
Here are the key players:
Glucose. This is the sugar your body burns for energy. Your body can also convert the other types of sugar to glucose.
Fructose. Fructose is found in fruits and vegetables (alongside glucose), and it’s actually metabolized in your liver, much like alcohol. Research suggests large amounts of fructose (like those found in processed foods and soda) may contribute to a condition called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Yikes.
Galactose. Galactose is the sugar molecule found in dairy products like milk and yogurt (along with some glucose).
For a fun science experiment, bite into a saltine and let it sit on your tongue without chewing or swallowing. After a minute or so, you’ll start to notice a sweet taste. This is because your saliva contains an enzyme that whacks individual sugars off each end of the carb chains that make up the cracker. The More You Know!
So, what’s added sugar?
Glucose, fructose, and galactose are all naturally occurring — mostly in grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, and dairy products.
But added sugars are the ones that are added to foods or drinks during or after processing.
That would include the sugar that’s added to things like cake, candy, ice cream, soda, and so on. It would also include the sugar you put in your oatmeal, tea, or coffee; the syrup you drizzle on your pancakes; and the chocolate syrup you occasionally squeeze from the bottle directly into your mouth.
While naturally occurring sugars have been part of the human diet for… well, forever, really, added sugars are a fairly recent development — especially in the huge quantities we have access to today.
Research suggests there’s a connection between added sugars and obesity, and they’ve been linked to increasing rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, and even depression.
IDing added sugar
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, added sugar should make up less than 10 percent of your daily calorie intake. The World Health Organization (WHO) has even more stringent recommendations, urging that it’s best to limit added sugars to less than 5 percent of your daily calorie intake.
Luckily, food manufacturers now are required to disclose the added sugar content of foods on the nutrition label, which makes it a bit easier to identify sources of added sugar in your diet.
This is a GREAT thing, because there are more than 50 names for sugar that can show up on ingredient labels, making it really difficult to ID added sugar without the assist from the nutrition label.
The many, many names of added sugar
Most common added sugars
Here are some of the most common sugars you’ll run across:
Sucrose. Sucrose, which may also be called table sugar or granulated sugar on food labels, is 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose. This is the stuff you buy at the grocery store.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HCFS has taken a lot of heat lately, and many companies are moving away from using it. It used to be extremely common in processed foods and sodas, but its higher fructose content (hence the name) — about 55 percent — makes it potentially more taxing on the liver than plain ol’ sugar.
Agave nectar. If you consider yourself remotely crunchy, then you’re probably familiar with agave nectar. Like honey, it wears a major health halo. But since it’s about 85 percent fructose, it’s probably not much healthier than other types of sugar — especially if you’re consuming it in large quantities.
Fruit juice. Fruit juice is a natural sweetener, but it’s still considered an added sugar. It’s really common in “healthier” products for kids, like gummy fruit snacks.
Honey. Honey is another natural sweetener that contains glucose and fructose. Although it definitely has some health benefits, it’s still considered an added sugar. Consuming large amounts of honey will have similar effects to table sugar on your body.
Other added sugars
But that’s not all, folks! There are more than 50 (no exaggeration) more words for sugar that you may find on ingredient labels. Here’s a whole mess of ’em:
Barbados sugar
barley malt
barley malt syrup
beet sugar
brown sugar
brown rice syrup
buttered syrup
cane crystals
cane juice
cane sugar
caramel
carob syrup
castor sugar
coconut palm sugar
coconut sugar
corn sweetener
corn syrup
crystalline fructose
date sugar
dehydrated cane juice
demerara sugar
dextrin
dextrose
evaporated cane juice
free-flowing brown sugar
fructose
fruit juice concentrate
glucose
glucose solids
golden sugar
grape sugar
honey
icing sugar
invert sugar
lactose
malt sugar
malt syrup
maltodextrin
maltol
maltose
mannose
maple syrup
molasses
muscovado
palm sugar
panela
powdered sugar
raw sugar
refiner’s syrup
rice syrup
saccharose
sorghum syrup
sweet sorghum
syrup
treacle
trehalose
turbinado sugar
yellow sugar
Easy ways to slash your added sugar intake
Limit the main culprits. The most common sources of added sugar for Americans are sugar-sweetened drinks, candy and pastries, and ice cream. You may also want to switch to unsweetened ketchup and sugar-free spaghetti sauce, as these products are often weirdly loaded with the sweet stuff.
Use alternative sweeteners. There are plenty of great alternative sweeteners on the market. We’re fond of stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol. (It’s not all rainbows and unicorns, though: Studies suggest some alternative sweeteners may negatively affect gut bacteria and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. But more research is needed.)
Retrain your taste buds. If you’re used to having honey in your tea or sweetened cream in your coffee, there’s no need to ax it right off the bat. Just start using a little less and continue decreasing it over time. Within a few weeks, you’ll be used to a less sweet taste.
And remember, you don’t have to completely remove added sugar from your diet. That would be pretty tough, actually. Just make it a point to minimize your added sugar intake. ’Cause you know what? You’re sweet enough already.
tl;dr
Many foods naturally contain sugar (think fruits and veggies, grains, and milk), but added sugars are those that are added to foods during or after processing (think cake, candy, soda, and the sugar in your coffee or tea).
Added sugars have been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, and a bunch of other health conditions.
For optimal health, the WHO (not the classic rock band, the other one) recommends limiting added sugars to less than 5 percent of your daily calorie intake.
Nutrition labels are now required to list added sugars, which is helpful because sugar has more than 50 different names that you might find on ingredient lists.
To limit your added sugars, you can check those food labels; decrease your intake of soda, candy, and processed snacks; use alt sweeteners like stevia; and retrain your taste buds to prefer less-sweet foods.

Global Outlook Summer 2020
Tumblr media
The pandemic has inflicted an enormous human cost across the globe. The response, which has involved governments’ imposing a range of necessary measures designed to combat the spread of the disease, has inevitably had a major impact on global economic activity. The most recent Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) outlook, warned, “The crisis will cast a long shadow over the world”. While IMF projections do suggest the global economy is likely to bounce back in 2021 as economic activity hopefully normalizes, the uncertainty caused by the pandemic is clearly placing huge pressure on economies all around the world.
The IMF’s economic assessment, published before Q1 GDP figures had been released, paints a bleak picture of economic prospects. The baseline projection, which suggests the world economy will contract 3% during 2020, assumes that in most countries, outbreaks peak during the second quarter before fading across the second half of the year, with business closures and other containment measures gradually easing. However, the IMF also suggested that a longer pandemic lasting into Q3, could cause a further 3% contraction during 2020.
The IMF subsequently indicated a potential downward revision to its forecast after Q1 economic data for many countries came in below their already pessimistic assumptions. IMF Managing Director, Krista Lina Georgieva, commented: “With no immediate medical solutions, more adverse scenarios might unfortunately materialize for some economies. It is the unknown about the behavior of this virus that is clouding the horizon for projections.”
Major benchmarks have rebounded from the lows reached in March as the pandemic tightened its grip. As lockdowns ease in some regions, economies tentatively begin to reopen. Governmental stimulus measures have provided some much-needed support. Markets largely shrugged off concerns over renewed tensions between the US and China, however, bleak economic data releases are still coming in.
 Europe
IMF data for the 19-country Eurozone, revealed growth across the whole bloc contracted by a record 3.8% in Q1. Both France and Italy, the second and third largest Eurozone economies, were plunged into recession, recording quarterly contractions of 5.8% and 4.7%, respectively.
While the German economy performed less badly, it also fell into recession with growth in the January–March period declining by 2.2%. European markets have rallied as lockdown measures have been eased. The European Commission has proposed a colossal €750bn ‘Recovery Fund’.
 Switzerland
In April, the manufacturing and services PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) fell to record lows as business activity and demand evaporated. The unemployment rate climbed and exports dropped in April on narrow external demand. In the middle of May, a second phase of the easing lockdown measures were implemented, with a further lifting of domestic restrictions in June and the reopening of international borders in mid-June.
The economy is expected to shrink this year as reduced incomes and unemployment suppress consumer spending. Government spending should lessen the extent of the downturn.
 UK
Data from ONS (Office for National Statistics), shows the UK economy contracted by just over a fifth (20.4%) in April – the largest monthly contraction on record. The OECD data highlighted that the UK is likely to be one of the hardest hit major economies, due to its service-based nature.
This news understandably subdued UK markets, with the focus now turning to the Bank of England, to see what fiscal measures they may choose to implement. In the UK, optimism is high as elements of the economy start to reopen.  The Bank of England Governor, Andrew Bailey recently said that recovery would not be normal and there would be some permanent scarring, but “we see evidence of elements of that recovery starting.” Last month the Bank said that the economy could shrink by 14% this year but may bounce back with growth of 15% in 2021.
 US
As concerns about a second spike of infection surfaced in the US in early June, many global stock markets suffered their worst day since mid-March. Steven Munching, US Treasury Secretary, ruled out shutting down the US economy again. Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chair, said the pandemic could result in permanent economic damage, indicating further stimulus efforts could be deployed. The Fed expects to hold interest rates near zero and to maintain its current rate of bond-buying. As consumer spending has reduced, job losses have mounted at pace.
GDP figures released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that output in the US declined during Q1 2020. According to preliminary estimates, the world’s largest economy shrank at an annualized rate of 4.8%, the lowest recorded GDP figure since the nadir of the financial crisis in the final quarter of 2008. This contraction ended the US economy’s record expansion streak which had stretched right back to Q2 2014.
 Asia and emerging market equities
Output in China contracted during the first three months of the year, with the economy shrinking at an annualized rate of 6.8%. This was the first recorded contraction in the world’s second-largest economy since at least 1992, when official quarterly growth statistics were first published. The Chinese authorities have announced they will not be setting a specific growth goal for this year but will instead focus on stabilizing employment and ensuring living standards. This appears to be an acknowledgement of the significant challenges the country now faces with a struggling economy and rising international hostility due to the fallout from the outbreak.
The Japanese economy, the world’s third-largest economy contracted at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the opening three months of this year; a second successive quarterly decline, thereby meeting the technical definition of a recession. Exports in the first quarter suffered their largest decline since the country’s devastating 2011 earthquake as worldwide lockdowns and supply chain disruptions severely hit shipments of Japanese goods.
Asian equity market performances have been mixed as US-China tensions re-escalated. Emerging Markets equity markets have been supported by stimulus efforts from governments, with interest rates cut in several countries, including Brazil, India and South Africa.
 Commodities
Gold is currently trading at around $1,717 a troy ounce. The price has been supported by growing US-China tensions, buoyed more recently by fears of a second wave of infections. Brent Crude is currently trading at around $32 per barrel. The price has previously been supported by growing confidence that producers are observing commitments to cut supplies and as fuel demand picks up as restrictions ease, but more recently fears of a second wave have weighed.
 Looking ahead
Continuing uncertainties surrounding the future spread of the virus and the success of efforts to develop a vaccine and therapies to counter it, make it extremely challenging to predict the most likely path for the global economy over the coming year or so.

Google under fire for squeezing travel startups hit by coronavirus refunds
Google is facing anger from the German startup ecosystem for refusing to restructure ad payments linked to travel and transport bookings that were subsequently wiped out by the coronavirus crisis.
TechCrunch has seen a letter addressed to Google that’s co-signed by eight travel industry startups in which the tech giant is asked for flexibility in how it enforces payment terms around these earlier ad auctions.
“By selectively enforcing strict payment terms on larger partners — especially from the travel and transportation industry — for its services provided to market those products, Google is opting out of sharing the responsibility to do right by consumers,” writes Christian Miele, the president of the German Startups Association — on behalf of the CEOs of Dreamlines, FlixBus, GetYourGuide, Homelike, HomeToGo, Omio, Tourlane and Trivago, who are co-signatories to the letter.
The eight startups represent €75M+ ($80M+) in ad revenues for Google in Q1 2020, per the letter.
The startups go on to call on Google to “share the burden”, noting that “leading companies from Germany and around the world have gone to unprecedented lengths for consumers” — such as issuing no-questions-asked refunds as a result of what it calls the “current extraordinary global situation”.
Globally, the travel industry has been decimated by the coronavirus crisis with demand evaporating almost overnight and no realistic prospect of the sector recovering until at least next year — plunging travel startups into a nuclear winter.
At specific issue here is the startups say Google is demanding payment for ads attached to bookings they subsequently refunded. Such as, for example, Easter trips and tours booked earlier in the year before the pandemic had taken hold in Europe.
This means the startups are now on the hook for substantial payments to Google for bookings that did not convert into revenue for their own businesses.
“The conflict is with the advertising dollars that we paid to Google for customers that could never be converted,” explains GetYourGuide CEO Johannes Reck . “People typically book two to three weeks out when they book for transport, hotel. It’s a little bit closer for experiences but particularly in the pre-Easter season… there are lots of booking volumes that come through Google and are then booked.
“We held the cash from these bookings and then the entire lockdown happened. Naturally what we did it after the lockdown happened is that we refunded all of the customers which were pretty significant amounts of money but which was obviously the right thing to do because they couldn’t travel — they had to stay at home.”
Reck says that when GetYourGuide went back to Google — to ask for at least a discount on the payments or else for them to be restructured so the business would not need to pay until travel picks up again — Google point blank refused.
“Google said A) we’re not going to participate in the cancellations at all — that’s all your thing to do, your customers, basically. Despite the fact that [they] can track every single customer. They know exactly which customers came from Google. And B) we’re also not restructuring the payment terms — so you have to pay immediately, within thirty days,” Reck told TechCrunch.
“That’s obviously terrible because all of our employees are on short term labor programs right now.”
“To me it’s inexplicable that we have to carry the full burden while the most profitable company in the world that has received more than €500M from us last year doesn’t want to do that,” he added. “That to me is just wrong.”
We reached out to Google to ask about the payments but at the time of writing the company had not responded.
Google’s parent entity, Alphabet, reported earnings yesterday, disclosing a significant slowdown in its ad business in March. However it still reported $41.16BN in revenue for the quarter — beating analyst estimates. Earnings per share did not do as well as expected, though, coming in under expectations at $9.87 in per-share income.
Ads remain the primary money engine for Alphabet, with Google generating the bulk of its revenue and profit, which are in turn largely generated by ad incomes. So the tech giant is exposed to the coronavirus crisis, as marketing budgets are put to the torch — though its multi-billions in revenue make it considerably less exposed than startups that advertise on its platform.
Aside from the raw impact of an unprecedented crisis hammering these smaller businesses, there’s a specific political dimension to the startups’ complaint — given they are in receipt of financial aid from the German government which is providing funds to support wage bills during the coronavirus crisis.
So now there’s the prospect of taxpayer funding flowing into Google’s coffers — instead of helping startups retain staff.
“We’re currently getting governmental credit and now the governmental credit would basically need to be paid out to Google to fund advertisment bills for customers that could never be legally converted, so we are pretty outraged,” said Reck.
The German government laid out further details of a separate €2BN financial support program today, which is specifically intended for VC-backed startups and SMEs — and is slated to start delivering support funds next month.
Though, again, the startups’ concern is the intended relief won’t help them unless Google agrees to defer the ad payments.
Asked whether GetYourGuide might need to make staff redundant if Google refuses to restructure the payments, Reck said: “So far we have not. And for the eight companies that sent the letter I think the situation is different. Ultimately we would get governmental credit — and that governmental credit would be used to pay Google.”
He also pointed out that other tech giants have been flexible over similar payments.
“It’s really striking because they are very isolated,” he said of Google. “Facebook, Microsoft, every other company was very forthcoming with travel and transportation companies in this pandemic. They all say pay whenever you’re ready to pay — don’t worry about us, get through it first. Facebook even gave additional ad discounts for the future when we want to reboot.
“So to me it’s staggering because the group of companies that wrote the letter spent more than half a billion dollars last year on Google. And still they’re not willing to do anything for us.
“At the end of the day Google needs to step up to their responsibility,” Reck added. “If you’re even benefitting from people losing jobs in this pandemic I think that’s just completely wrong.”
Discussing the matter in a telephone call with TechCrunch, Thomas Jarzombek, commissioner of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy for the Digital Industry and Start-ups, told us the German government raised the issue of the ad payments in a call with Google yesterday. He said Google told it it would be dealing with such requests on a “case-by-case” basis, which Jarzombek described as a concern — given the lack of transparency around its decisions.
“In Germany there are a lot of companies behaving in some kind of social manner to support the ones that are not that strong financially,” said Jarzombek. “When we look at Google it’s obvious that this is one of the financially strongest companies in the world. And what I’m more concerned about in that case is that Google told us they will decide ‘case by case’ whom they will help out.”
He said the issue is one that’s likely to affect startups more than “traditional” types of businesses which are likely to be spending less on Google ads.
“For these digital startups the amount they’re spending on ads on Google and on Facebook is maybe the biggest share of their cost position,” he added. “So to be honest we are afraid that this can be a disadvantage for them.”
He also raised the spectre of competition — saying the concern is Google’s case by case decisions may be less favorable for startups that are “in some kind of competition” with the tech giant.
“There are other companies that are in competition with all these Google verticals… and it may be in these ‘case by case’ decisions Google will not be very kind to them,” he suggested. “So this kind of procedure is completely intransparent to us — and also to the companies.”
In recent years Google has faced substantial antitrust scrutiny and enforcement in Europe, related its dominant position in the search market — with the European Commission levying a number of fines, including related to Google Shopping and search ad brokering.
The Commission has also previously said it has received a number of complaints about the tech giant’s activities in other verticals — including travel search — though so far without launching a formal probe.
Jarzombek told us the German government has not currently raised the issue of Google’s selective response to ad payment restructuring with the Commission, as it’s not yet clear how the company will respond to the calls for a rethink — saying it’s waiting for a “final response” from Google to its concerns.
But he emphasized he remains concerned about the lack of transparency around Google’s processes, reiterating: “The procedure is intransparent for us and also intransparent for the startups.”
Asked if GetYourGuide has any competition concerns related to Google’s response towards the travel startup sector, Reck told us: “We’ve just been a very happy Google partner up to this point. We’ve done tremendous work with them. Antitrust is mostly regarding flights and hotels — it’s not experiences. And we have always had a very good relationship with them which is why I’m so absolutely baffled that in the worst hour of our company history they currently completely changed behavior and become so aggressive.”
While there may be no legal requirement for Google to amend contractual terms around the payments, even during a pandemic, Reck says the bigger point is simply about doing the right thing.
After all, this is a company that used to attach itself to the motto ‘do no evil’.
“Google never wants to give in on any of these things — out of principle. But I think their principle here is just misguiding them into a completely wrong direction because according to their principle we should never have refunded customers and then everything would be fine. But that doesn’t follow the logic of a pandemic where everyone has to stay at home,” said Reck.
“I don’t even want to get into the legal argument on this because I think just morally it’s wrong,” he added. “As [one of] the most profitable organizations in the world you cannot charge startups who are furloughing their employees and put them on short term labor programs and who are basically now getting subsidized by the government — those subsidies can’t flow back into Google.”
Update: A Google spokesperson has now sent the following statement:
Small and medium-sized companies are facing unprecedented challenges and our teams are working day and night to help our partners protect their business and stay in touch with their customers. This includes an 800M US-$ financial support package for organizations, including US-$ 340M advertising credits for our SMB customers and helping people stay up to date on the latest travel advisories. We’re committed to doing even more to help our users and our customers through this crisis, and are in continued communication with our partners, including the travel industry.

The Week in Tech: What 5 Billion Means to Amazon
Tumblr media
Each week, we review the week’s news, offering analysis about the most important developments in the tech industry.Hi, This is Karen Weise, the tech correspondent for The New York Times in Seattle. Since the holiday shopping season is ending, it’s not a bad time to talk about Amazon.Let me start with a single, large number critical to the shopping experience on Amazon: five billion. Each day, Amazon gets five billion submissions to edit descriptions and details about the products for sale on its site. The edits come from the companies that fill Amazon’s Everything Store. That’s 1.8 trillion edits a year that Amazon needs to sort through. Are they accurate or misleading? Do they follow Amazon’s rules or even the law? Some of the edits are simple updates to a product, or a company trying out new marketing. Others are tactics used to sabotage a competitor’s products or add a certification, like Food and Drug Administration approval, that an item does not have.If shopping on Amazon can feel a little chaotic — duplicate listings, weird variations, descriptions that don’t quite match a product — this daily edit is a big reason.I learned the importance of five billion from Amazon when I was reporting on what has happened in the two decades since Amazon began letting outside companies list goods on its site. The move sharply increased the selection customers can find when they type in Amazon.com, and now about 60 percent of Amazon’s sales come from these outside merchants. My article detailed how Amazon has squeezed more out of these suppliers over the years, making Amazon’s services, like advertising and fulfillment, essential to succeeding on the site, often in ways that make it harder to do business elsewhere. I heard so much about how companies scramble to respond when Amazon changes its rules, which it does to present customers with a coherent, consistent experience even as the selection and number of sellers have grown so large.Amazon’s decision to open its doors to outside sellers has been essential to its ability to get us almost anything in a matter of days, if not hours. It’s what lets us turn to it with the random, near stream-of-consciousness list of things that pop into our heads. Though my memory is hazy, I’m pretty sure one of my family’s first Prime Now orders came soon after my son was born: We got diapers, chocolate — and vermouth for Negronis.Like Facebook in its effort to sort out fake news, Amazon has turned to algorithms to organize and police its site, and said it was spending $400 million a year to do so. On Thursday, the company said that it had record holiday sales and that “billions of items were ordered worldwide.” Jeff Wilke, the chief executive of Amazon’s consumer business, told me that the company’s long-term future depended on patrolling the site without harming well-meaning merchants.“We have a strong incentive to be as accurate as possible in identifying bad actors, make very few mistakes when we’re wrong,” he said, adding that Amazon also wants to give people second chances when they make an honest mistake.People who have worked at Amazon’s marketplace debate whether the company can build systems fast enough, and accurate enough, to keep up. Some say the gap is closing; others fear the rot may grow too fast to catch.I find myself thinking of a conversation I had toward the beginning of the year with Juozas Kaziukenas, founder of Marketplace Pulse, a research company. “If the chaos continues, I don’t know how long a consumer will be willing to put up with it,” he said. “They are a marketplace of trust, and if you cannot trust it, the whole premise of Amazon completely evaporates.”That trust comes down to big decisions and little details, like those changes submitted five billion times a day.How are we doing? We’d love your feedback on this newsletter. The best of Engadget's Big Picture in 2019
I love doing The Big Picture series for Engadget, even though it can take a lot of hunting to find a striking photo with a tech angle. I believe in the idea that, by creating some emotion, dramatic images help us grasp heavy concepts in a way that words alone can't.
Another is that I learn a lot of interesting stuff while researching them. That includes things about art, astronomy, science and even weaving. That information seems to stick in my head as it's indelibly associated with a powerful image.
Many of this year's Big Picture images make interesting statements about the impact of technology on humanity. And although some of the images were created by accident or without artistic intention, they're often full of symbolism and irony like any other works of art. I think a great example of that is the first item on my list.
Why Garfield phones have littered French beaches for 35 years
Can any image convey the folly of rampant consumerism more perfectly than this? The character itself was "a conscious effort to come up with a marketable character," according to its creator. It worked, and the phone was just one of many terrible Garfield products dumped on the public in the '80s. In 1983, a container full of the gaudy phones fell off a ship near Brittany, France and has been disgorging them into the ocean ever since.
A volunteer group finally found the source in a cave near a town called Plouarzel, but the tide makes it impossible to remove them. Just one glance at this juxtaposition of nature and trash tells us everything we need to know about human stupidity (and the '80s).
EV batteries are born in Chilean evaporation ponds
Lauren Dauphin/NASA Earth Observatory/Landsat/U.S. Geological Survey
Here's what a good image can do: almost every time I think about lithium-ion EV batteries nowadays, this NASA/Landsat/Geological Survey satellite image pops into my head. Before I did the article, I had no idea how lithium was produced. Now I understand that much of it comes from lithium brine in salt flats around the Andes mountains in Chile and neighboring countries.
Since it's taken from the surface (and not underground mines) like fleur de sel , you can clearly see the scale of the operation. It consumes a lot of water, creating conflicts with indigenous people of the region. What's worse, scientists don't know the future impact of such operations. "When people ask me, 'Is the water going to run out?' I tell them, 'The truth is, we don't know," said hydro-geologist Mariana Cervetto.
Textiles become circuits in 'The Embroidered Computer'
Irene Posch, Ebru Kurbak
The Embroidered Computer is a working, 8-bit electromechanical computer made from gold, linen, hematite, wood, silver and copper. It has flippable relays much like the ones used in mainframes before semiconductors camera long. It's one of the most striking examples I've seen of bringing form to function and vice-versa.
"Through its mere existence, it evokes one of the many imaginable alternative histories of computing technology," artists Irene Posch and Ebru Kurbak wrote. "Traditionally purely decorative, their pattern here defines the function. They lay bare core digital routines usually hidden in black boxes. Users are invited to interact with the piece in programming the textile to compute for them."
Facing your AI self at the 'Neural Mirror' art installation

Corporations don't see you as a person with a desires, needs and a rich inner life. They simply see you as a collection of data that helps them sell products. An Italian design studio has created a mirror that lets you see yourself the way they do, so perhaps we can better understand how we're being manipulated.
The "mirror" is actually an OLED panel with a reflective coating and depth-sensor camera that can act as both a mirror and display. It generates a Matrix-like doppelganger of the visitor, while showing creepy data about their ethnicity, facial geometry, facial expressions and more. "Artificial intelligence extracts all of our behaviors in a shady way then transforms them into a form of wealth for corporations," Ultravioletto's Bruno Capelzzuoili told Dezeen. "Here this process is well declared and explained to the user. They can see in real time what kind of data we are capturing."
One of these models doesn't exist
Images courtesy of i-D japan
We're sold beauty products based on a connection with human models, but those days could be numbered. Earlier this year, a virtual model and Instagram "star" named Imma (center) appeared in a makeup spread for Kate cosmetics with two human models.
While you might quibble over her realism, there's no denying that Imma is at least on her way out of the uncanny valley. The implications aren't great for folks who work in this industry. Brands are starting to rent out virtual models like Imma and another called Miquela, depriving real models of paid gigs. Worse, as Facebook just found out in a recent disinformation campaign, fake people could be used to manipulate users without leaving any kind of human paper trail. "Did you hear it with your own ears? Did you see it with your own eyes?'" said actress Heidi Johanningmeier. "We'll never be able to trust that again."
Neil Armstrong's Buzz Aldrin photo is unparalleled in art
NASA/Neil Armstrong
Sometimes you don't need to be an artistic genius to take a great photo, you just need access to the subject. After white-knuckling the "Eagle" lunar lander to the Sea of Tranquility, Neil Armstrong was somewhere no other photographer had been: the Moon. He also had a perfect subject, fellow Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, sporting a photogenic outfit that was the most technically advanced ever created.
Armstrong wasn't just a tourist with a Kodak instamatic, though. He had an advanced Hasselblad 500 EL camera and extensive training on how to use it. He learned well: the photo captures the moon's vast desolation while also conveying the wonder of the occasion. It paints the astronaut as an anonymous explorer, coming in peace to an unconquerable black and white world.
Selfie harm and the damage done
Images courtesy of Rankin
The Snapchat and Instagram generation might have more body dysmorphia than ever, and a photographer known as Rankin wanted to explore that. He took photos of teens aged 13 to 19, then asked them to spend a few minutes editing the shots. So what happened? "People are mimicking their idols, making their eyes bigger, their nose smaller and their skin brighter, and all for social media likes," he said on Instagram.
All of this is facilitated by apps like Facetune, SelfieCity, Retouch me and others. "What you can do on these apps is way beyond what even a great photoshop operator can do," he told Bored Panda. "They're addictive [and] very impressive." No doubt, this kind of stuff can be fun if you're just messing around, but it can also become very dangerous. "It's when people are making an alternative or 'better' social media identity that this becomes a mental health problem," said Rankin.

Search Engine Optimization Advertising And Marketing
In the enterprise area, one significant trend we're seeing recently is data import across the big gamers. Much of Search Engine Optimization involves working with the information Google gives you and after that completing every one of the spaces. SEMrush and also Searchmetrics (in its venture Collection packages) provide this level of venture SERP surveillance too, which can provide your company a higher-level view of how you're doing versus rivals.

In August 2016, the Federal Trade Payment filed a management problem versus 1-800 Calls alleging, among other points, that its trademark enforcement techniques in the online search engine advertising and marketing room have unreasonably restrained competitors in infraction of the FTC Act. 1-800 Calls has denied all misdeed and also is scheduled to show up before an FTC administrative legislation judge in April 2017. If you've improved the crawling as well as indexing of your site using Google Browse Console or other solutions, you're probably curious concerning the traffic pertaining to your website. |What Does Search Engine Optimization Cost
Web designers and also content service providers started maximizing websites for internet search engine in the mid-1990s, as the initial internet search engine were cataloging the very early Internet. Initially, all webmasters only required to submit the address of a web page, or LINK, to the numerous engines which would certainly send out a "spider" to "crawl" that web page, essence links to other web pages from it, and return info discovered on the web page to be indexed. [5] The procedure entails an online search engine crawler downloading and install a page as well as saving it on the search engine's own server. A second program, referred to as an indexer, removes details about the web page, such as words it contains, where they lie, and any type of weight for particular words, in addition to all web links the web page includes. [30] On June 15, 2009, Google disclosed that they had taken procedures to minimize the impacts of PageRank sculpting by utilize of the nofollow feature on links. Matt Cutts, a popular software program engineer at Google, revealed that Google Robot would no more deal with any nofollow web links, in the same way, to prevent Search Engine Optimization service providers from using nofollow for PageRank sculpting. [31] As a result of this adjustment the use of nofollow brought about evaporation of PageRank. To avoid the above, Search Engine Optimization designers created alternative techniques that change nofollowed tags with obfuscated JavaScript and also thus permit PageRank sculpting. Additionally numerous solutions have actually been suggested that consist of the usage of iframes, Flash and JavaScript. [32]

Early versions of search algorithms counted on webmaster-provided details such as the keyword meta tag or index documents in engines like ALIWEB. Meta tags provide an overview per web page's web content. Using metadata to index pages was discovered to be much less than dependable, however, due to the fact that the webmaster's option of keyword phrases in the meta tag can possibly be an imprecise depiction of the site's real material. Imprecise, insufficient, and also inconsistent data in meta tags might and did trigger pages to rank for irrelevant searches. [10] [dubious] Internet content service providers also controlled some features within the HTML source of a web page in an effort to rank well in search engines. [11] By 1997, search engine designers identified that web designers were exerting to rank well in their online search engine, which some web designers were even manipulating their rankings in search engine result by packing pages with extreme or unnecessary key words. Very early internet search engine, such as Altavista and Infoseek, changed their algorithms to avoid webmasters from adjusting positions. [12]|Seo Meaning Easy
The surge of Gopher (created in 1991 by Mark McCahill at the College of Minnesota) led to two new search programs, Veronica and also Jughead. Like Archie, they searched the documents names as well as titles stored in Gopher index systems. Jughead (Jonzy's Universal Gopher Pecking order Excavation As Well As Show) was a device for obtaining menu information from details Gopher servers.
