While I'm ranting about fandom, I have really mixed feelings about posts that are like "back in the day, we never cared about what anyone else was doing and you could write/draw/ship whatever you wanted with no backlash."
Because on the one hand, yeah, there was a much higher tolerance for dark content 10+ years ago, and I do miss that. Antis are bad, sui-baiting people for drawing cute art on one account and NSFW on another is bad, whump is excellent and I wish there were more of it.
On the other, said tolerance didn't exist everywhere and you're kidding yourself if you think it was a fandom-wide virtue. Ship wars were vicious and frequently involved judging female characters as sluts unworthy of $hero because they'd kissed another guy onscreen one time. There were plenty of places you weren't allowed to write anything but fluffy canon het or get judged. I think it mainly feels like there was some golden time of everyone being Okay With Anything just because we didn't have these massive sites where you were rubbing shoulders with everybody. On LJ, it was very easy to just interact with the other people who liked the same stuff as you.
And also on the other, the rise of antis/criticism of dark stuff/etc. went hand-in-hand with the rise of social justice awareness in fandom, and I have strong memories of people really resisting any analysis or discussion relating to bigotry or subconscious bias in canon or fanon because get out of here SJW! It's all made up and meaningless! Pretty much everyone was sorted into either the social-justice-aware camp or the called-people-SJW-unironically camp, and the former was going to be critical of what message your fic or fandom participation was carrying (in terms of sexist tropes, ship statistics, and so on) while the latter was going to be hostile to you saying you were offended or disturbed by anything at all.
I remember one time toward the end of Fandom_Wank (after UnfunnyBusiness had been split off to talk about conflicts involving -isms because people had come to recognize that not all drama is equal) when someone brought up an old wank involving people upset that in a particular fandom's AUs, the characters of color would frequently be turned into literal animals while the white characters were still human. Originally, they had been mocked because this was obviously trivial and not racist, it was just random chance which characters got turned into animals, etc. But at that time, post-RaceFail, everyone agreed that it was really messed up. And that's what I think about every time the "people used to not care about what you wrote" topic comes up.

For the unpopular opinion edition! 💚 🖤 💖
Woot! I’m gonna do SGA, bc it’s my main fandom, and SGU, bc I know it’s more your favorite.
(I do wish I was more aware of what the unpopular opinions in the fandom are bc I have no idea how mine rank on a popularity scale...)
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
My favorite SGA character is Todd, and I’m not sure I can think of a specific something that I think everyone gets wrong about him. I encourage people to have more, wilder takes on Todd. Maybe always pairing him up with John is something I don't like? Lmao, it’s the pot calling the kettle black, but I do wish that there were more fics that explored him in other relationships. They do have good chemistry, so I get it, but I guess I'm just a rare-pair shipper at heart and now that John/Todd is getting more popular I want rarer stuff. 😅
My favorite SGU character is Greer. I do not remember ever reading anything that I felt got him wrong, so... Please have wrong takes about Greer, world. Reading bad takes annoys me and makes me want to write my own fics. 😂
🖤: Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?
This is so interesting, because SGA is the war-crimes apologist fandom, so I don’t think everyone thinks anyone is particularly morally good.  I’m gonna say Heightmeyer. I can never forgive her specifically for the way she lied to Michael, betraying her profession and his trust, and I was unmoved by her death. I feel like she has a few fans so that’s probably an unpopular opinion.
SGU is a morally grey character hot spot so... Maybe Caine? I think we’re supposed to think he’s “good” but I’m not sure if everyone actually does. I'll say also that Riley is really annoying me on my current watch-through of the series. I feel like he'd be that friend who's always like "we should do this because it's the right thing to do" in whatever situation, when actually it's just the most annoying thing to do.
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?
I’m not sure about biggest… I feel like this is probably pretty niche, but I’ve seen a couple takes about Kolya being sexually abusive to Todd during his captivity. I don't know if people are taking this as a headcanon or just a fic idea... but while I think it’s an interesting idea, I disagree with it having happened. Mostly just because I don’t see Kolya as being a sexual person, I don't get that energy from him. (Yes, he is certainly a sadist, he gets pleasure from breaking people down, but I don’t think it’s sexual for him.)
For SGU, I once got a repudiating comment on a post because I was ragging on the show for having bad writing, but I don’t necessarily think that’s an unpopular opinion. How about, I wish Amanda was in more episodes and I wish there was more exploration of Amanda and Ginn being in the ship. I think Amanda is a fascinatingly flawed character with a lot of potential that is never realized, because of the aforementioned bad writing issues. Stop focusing on her obsession with Rush and explore her general hedonism! (I'm thinking of the episode of SG1 where Daniel gets addicted to the sarcophagus as a model... give us more of Amanda being obsessed with being able to "feed herself" alien strawberries or whatever, and she makes it a problem for the whole crew because she's stopped caring about fixing the ship.) If I'm not going to complain about needing to rewrite the entire arc that ended them up there, I think the show cuts off the idea of Ginn and Amanda being "spirits in the ship" right when it could have gotten interesting, not that that is unusual for Stargate. We can't have nice things 😭 and I would have liked to explore that more as a plot point, and also had more for Eli and Ginn to do. The whole "together but apart" and "dead but still here" thing is super tragic, and I would have liked to get more of it explored through a lens that wasn't just Amanda's obsession with Rush.
Thanks for the ask!!😁
(unpopular opinion ask game!)

20 questions for fanfic writers!
Tagged by @aintgonnatakethis 💙
How many works do you have on AO3? 46
What's your total AO3 word count? 213 147
What fandoms do you write for? My big two are stargate (any and all. Mostly sg1 and sga though) and csi. Though my ao3 says my most posted fandoms are smallville and spn, and that's technically correct, from the svnatural crossovers. There's a couple other shows thrown in there too but we won't get into my whole writing history and future rn
Top 5 fics by kudos:
The thing about a fantasy (csi, G, CathRick)
Beautiful disaster (sga, sg1, T, Gen.)
Keep me safe (sg1, G, Sam/Daniel)
Take me back into your arms (sg1, T, Sam/Daniel)
Morning person (sg1, G, sam & daniel)
Do you respond to comments? Not always, but no that if you've left a nice comment I'm grinning like an idiot each and every time I read it. I love them.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I feel like I don't write a ton of angsty ending so I might have to say so much for normal (also my 6th fic by kudos). It ends basically how spn starts, so yeah.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Oh so many but I think the ultimate one has to be take me back into your arms. Nothing like a reunion after coming back to this mortal coil
Do you get any hate on fics? Thankfully no (knock on wood)
Do you write smut? No siree. Not my wheelhouse
Craziest crossover? I basically started by writing crossovers, but the wackiest is definitely the Jason Teague & Dean Winchester are twins fic. Thanks @morrison-the-ii once again
Have you ever had a fic stolen? I hope not!
Have you ever had a fic translated? Not to my knowledge, but I'd allow it!
Have you ever co written a fic? I've bounced ideas with various people, but never actually wrote with anybody
All time favourite ship? I'm not sure tbh. My unhinged svnatural SamLois era was very fun and am still much a fan of Sam/Daniel fics. But one it always seems to come back to writing for me is the brotp between Sara and Nick. They're such a great dynamic to work with and I truly missed writing all csi but especially them so much. Bonus answer Clois, but I don't think I've wrote anything for them. Or at least not anything beyond a ficlet
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have this saving hope doc I've had for over a year that was meant to be a role reversal of the series finale (meaning its Alex because I like to be even more depressing apparently). The doc is still empty to this day and I honestly think itll stay that way but let's be real nobody wants that anyway I know I really don't 😭. Could also say csi road trip fic but I'm damned and determined to write that one
What are your writing strengths? Characters and dialogue. I love characters and I always feel like I have a good grasp on each of them and can keep them in character as much as possible
What are your writing weaknesses? Any kind of creative descriptors.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language? I doubt I'd personally try it, but I mean if you want to, I don't see a reason not to
First fandom you wrote in? First fic I ever started was Resurfacing (csi, M, gen.) First fic I posted however was the original version of hear it from me (svnatural, G; Clois & Sam)
Favourite fic you've written? Do you know how hard this is? I might have to go with special occasion (svnatural, G; gen.) Just because of how excited I was for that idea combining the best of both worlds. But another one I'm proud of for some reason is just maybe (we'll be alright) (sgu, G; TJ/Young). I don't often feel great about my scene setting and emotion but I like to think I hit the nail on the head with that one
Tagging (no pressure): @sga-owns-my-soul @jencsi @ilkkawhat and @space-helen
But please also feel free to jump on if you see this!

thanks to @judgeverse for tagging me!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
177 total! I'm still astonished at that amount tbh
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
480,869
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently: Sg1, sga, and sgu mainly. Star trek but not new trek. Star wars rebels. Mad max, mainly fury road. Pacific rim occasionally. The thing 1982. I've written a ton more fandoms than that but I'm not active in those routinely
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
My highest is an old x men fic at 167 kudos. Only one of my top five is a fandom I'm still in, and that's stargate atlantis at 166.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
As much as possible. Sometimes I'm simply too drained by real life to answer every comment, but I try to answer all of them if I can. I feel it's important to let my readers know the comments really do impact me, they're really important to keep me motivated and I want other fans to know that. There's been times a single comment convinced me to finish a fic, or write a whole new concept.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
definitely this she ra fic, posted while the show was coming out, where scorpia tries to reach out to catra, her attempt to help is rejected, and she lets herself be willingly consumed by the world ending magic. Most of my angst always has a happy ending, so this one is perhaps my only 100% angsty fic
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably this the thing 1982 fic, where I take characters from a horror movie where they all die horribly, and instead have them live a happy gay domestic life with no alien monster.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
one fic from a fandom I shall not name got so much hate I deleted it for my own health. Otherwise, I got one angry comment on a she ra fic once
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
no, i've dabbled in it once or twice, but don't like it much. I doubt i'd ever write anything more explicit than suggestive content or sex based jokes
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I wrote a fic with the get down characters in the mad max universe, but without any crossover of mad max characters. It's just the get down characters in the universe. that's definitely not my most popular fic, but I enjoyed writing it nonetheless
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope, but the idea scares me. fortunately I like weird things no one else does, so I think the chances of someone stealing my content is low
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
no
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
yes! it was a great experience, would totally do it again as long as I was close with the other person cowriting
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
My top relationships are both from the get down, my first being thizzee. However, my top ship for a fandom that isn't dead is teal'c/daniel/sam from stargate sg1
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
pretty much all my unfinished get down fanfics. I love them all and want to finish them, but it's painful to think about the show with the cancellation and how it canonically ended, and also I don't know if anyone would even read them, so very low priority at this point
16. What are your writing strengths?
internal monologue of characters
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
anything sexy or overly romantic. Kissing is really hard for me
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'm not comfortable with messing it up. I deleted a very popular fic of mine because I wasn't happy with the writing of the asl in it. I'm still working on editing it to be better and still hope to post it and finish it this time. However, I'd rather not write something at all than portray it in a harmful way. If it's something I can research and do well, I'll do that, but I feel some things are just not for me to write about and that's fine
19. First fandom you wrote for?
First posted was the lord of the rings movies. First ever written was probably teen titans. Funnily enough, neither of those are still posted and I've never written for those fandoms since. Of my actual posted work, my first fandom was dc's legends of tomorrow, which I no longer write for either, but I left the fics up
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I couldn't choose just one.
So, of my longest fics:
This sga fic, with team sheppard as a queerplatonic quartet raising torren together. They get pulled into an alternate universe and have to save the world (again)
Of my shortest fics:
This space sweepers fic about bub's trans identity. Ends happily with her successful transition

Note
let's go totally different here cause I've been in a stargate mood and say stargate
tumblr keeps white-screening on me as i type this draft so i feel like i'm racing the clock as i rewrite this again!
so the stargates (sg-1 and sga; i never saw sgu) are two of those shows where i saw a het ust ship and went "ok sounds good, let me devote my life to that" BUT:
sg1:
jack/sara: i always liked them as a past ship but hooooooly smokes in this watch-through it flattened me. the intensity of his love for her!! STILL!! how she literally hadn't seen him in a year and was still like "are you here because you want to get back together?" i desperately want them to still be in each other's lives. there's a solid chance i would throw over my otp for this. i was recently introduced to the concept of "maybe they still sometimes have sex" and i have not stopped thinking about it for one minute since.
daniel/janet is apparently a rarepair, because it doesn't crack the top 10 on ao3, but it was such a staple of my sg-1 existence that it surprised me to learn that just now! the actors shipped their characters, and so sprinkled in some unscripted beats for us. there's definitely some kind of energy between them in the "2010" future episode, and they have some cute awkward moments in real-canon. i don't ship them as ferally as i used to, but it lives on in my heart.
mini!otp probably doesn't even count because it gets automatically categorized under the juggernaut sam/jack ship tag in ao3 but i am clinically obsessed, i have not slept in years, if mini!otp had a thousand fans i would be one, etc (it has like seven fans, but I AM ONE).
sga:
teyla/kate heightmeyer: it's a little bit hard for me to work my way past "oh my god they're SO PRETTY" with this pairing to actual rationale, but there IS a lot of actual rationale. they have really wonderful scenes together. teyla quickly gets over her aversion to kate's professional role and they have a lot of trust in each other. they are both somewhat isolated (kate by her role; teyla because now she's neither fish nor fowl when it comes to the atlantis expedition & her people), and so are perfectly primed to develop a deep friendship and connection and they are so goddamn pretty together. just take a minute to think about this pairing* and i promise it'll improve your day. (*offer only valid for seasons 1-3)
teyla/ronon: they are also very goddamn pretty together, and are very physically comfortable around each other, but they also get each other on a level that none of the earthlings around them can understand. i wrote them once and 100% believe that at least the general idea of that happens in canon (the part where they sometimes have sex, and it's not a big deal).
john/elizabeth/rodney: oooooh this one is so dicey because i do NOT ship it as a "john & rodney but elizabeth is there" thing and that's most of what you'll find, so i'm hesitant to click on anything that isn't by an author i know, but there are a few fics out there that create a great dynamic here.
crossover:
jack/elizabeth: is it weird to REALLY ship something, but as kind of a transitional pairing? because that's this for me. i really like the exchange of power dynamics they have early on, and love that she dreams him up in "The Real World," and whenever i see them on screen together i lose it because i really want them to have sex. in a "you know, let's just see how this goes" kind of way. if the real world were a dedicated AU, i absolutely ship them there for really-real, but in the canon world, it's not an endgame ship for me. i don't genuinely see them having lifelong potential (though that might be because i have emotionally committed them elsewhere), but i want them to just Have An Understanding and sometimes they have sex.
