Chapter 10

Why does unfortunate events always happens when I fall asleep? Ye Hua will surely kill me if he found out that A-Li wondered by himself and went into a brothel.. I tried to shake the thoughts away.

“A-Li, this is a secret between you and me. Don’t tell your father, all right?”

“I understand”. And we did the pinky promised.

“Ok, let’s go and stroll around. Your father should be back by now”. I took A-Li’s hand. It was really nice to have a mother and son bonding.

We went to a bridge that was beautifully lighted up with lanterns. While admiring the view, a drunken man appeared.

“Mister, you are truly a fine looking man. I very much admire you” - the drunk man said while blocking my way.

“You are too kind” - I said to him while pulling A-Li out of the way.

The drunk man touches my hand. I quickly pulled it off.

“Your hand is fair and delicate as well. I have fallen for you at the first sight” - he said, trying to grab my shoulders this time.

Before I push him away, someone grabbed his hand.

“Ouch ouch ouch” - he cried. “That hurts”

Ye Hua let go of his hand. “You seems to have a merry time to be taking advantage of my wife”

I turned to him. “You're back?”

He looked at me.

Out of no where, A-Li spoke up. “You are a man of talent to have managed to annoy my father. Goodbye. Take care.”

The drunken got angry. “How dare you! Do you know who am I?” - he raised his voice.

Without saying anything, Ye Hua just ‘poof’ him off.

“Where did you send him to?” - I asked, amused with his action.

“I don’t know”

I gave a soft laugh. “Even you had not show up, I was already thinking of doing that”

Ye Hua was still annoyed. “Why didn’t you tried to avoid him when he was taking advantage of you?”

I was enjoying this moment. “He merely touched me once or twice” - I said, avoiding his gaze.

He suddenly grab my waist. The town folks were staring. All he did was froze the time and lean over to kiss me. My whole body froze.

“I merely kissed you once or twice” - he teased and unfroze the town folks.

Still in shock, he took my hands. We stroll the town a little more and finally found an inn to sleep for the night as A-Li has fallen asleep in his arms.

“Please bring some warm water” - Ye Hua said to the owner. “And cook a few dishes too” - he added while looking at me.

“All right” - the owner said and left.

I wasn’t in the mood to eat as the dishes were not to my taste. I was actually missing the dishes that Ye Hua cooks but I said nothing.

“If you don’t want to eat, why don’t you wash up and go to bed?”

I looked at the bed. With A-Li sleeping, it was too small for us to fit in.

“What about you?” - I asked him.

He caught my meaning. “It’s ok, you go to sleep. I’ll do some reading”

I went to bed, assured that we will be safe while Ye Hua looked over us.

Morning arrived in the mortal world. Ye Hua walked in with a pot and sat it on the table.

“You’re awake” - he said to me.

“Hmm. What is that?”

“You did not eat anything yesterday night so I went to borrow the kitchen and cooked some porridge”

“Did you rest well?” - I asked him, worried that he’s not resting.

“I’m fine” - he assured me. “Qian Qian, I have business to attend later back at the Celestial Palace”

“Father, you are leaving? Cheng Yu said absent makes the heart grow fonder. You and Mother has been separated for 300 years. How can you bare to part now?” - A-Li asked.

I wanted to laugh out loud. I really want to meet this Cheng Yu.

“Have you forgotten what day is it?” - Ye Hua asked him.

“What day is it? Let me think about what day is it in Heaven” - he said, counting with his little fingers.

“Oh, it’s Heavenly Lord’s birthday!”

You guys are weird. Isn’t he your great grandfather? Why do you address him as Heavenly Lord too?

“That’s correct"

“Are you taking me and Mother to go celebrate Heavenly Lord’s birthday too?”

Me? “Celebrate?” - I asked offhand.

Ye Hua gave a side glance. “Your mother don’t like to attend this kind of banquet. I’ll go by myself”

I’m impressed that after all these years, he still knows what I like and what I dislike.

“All right” - A-Li said. He sounded glad he didn’t need to attend too.

“You don’t worry. I’ll bring Riceball back” - I told Ye Hua.

“Aunt, you are back!” - Mi Qu ran down from the Fox Den’s entrance happily. “Where is Crown Prince?” - he asked.

“He went back to the Celestial Palace. He said he will be gone for a few days for business”

“Does it means that there won’t be anyone to cook?”

I looked at A-Li. He smiled.

I didn’t thought about that.

“Go to the market in the afternoon to buy some loquats” - I told Mi Qu.

A-Li looked at me in horror. Sorry my son. I’ll find a way to feed you somehow. I promised.

I finally played my role as a mother. I found someone from the market to cook some dishes for him and also put him to bed.

While watching him sleeping, I couldn’t help but to apologized again for what I had done.

A-Li, please forgive me for what I have done in the past. From now on, I’ll do my best to take care and protect you. Just give me a little more time, for me to talk and settle some issues with your father. If everything goes well, we will be a family again like you had always wished for.

Ye Hua been gone for 2 nights but it felt like he was gone for 2 years. The lady in the market that was cooking for us has gone to visit her son, hence I had no choice but to let A-Li eat loquats.

“Mother, when is Father coming back? I want to eat steamed mushrooms, cabbage and radish soup”

“Soon, probably” - I said while peeling the loquat skin. I’ve been praying hard for him to return too. I miss his cooking as well.

“Father, you’re back!” - A-Li ran to Ye Hua.

“You’re back”. I know what he’s going to say to me next.

“Didn’t I tell you that A-Li is growing up? He can’t be eating this the entire day”

Thank God he’s not angry.

“I know. That’s why I’ve been hoping day and night for you to return to make better meals for him”

He came nearer. “You really been hoping for me to return?” - he asked hopefully.

Yes. I’ve been waiting for you to come back. Not only for feeding our son. But I was really waiting for you.

“Father, Mother is blushing”

“I.. I was hoping for you.. to come back and cook” - I said quickly and ran out of the room. Argh, this is embarrassing.

Over the next few days, Ye Hua been going back and forth between Nine Heavens for business and Qing Qiu to cook for us. Feeling bad that I can’t do nothing much for him, I decided to find him a disciple in the kitchen so he won’t be so burden about cooking.

Down at the pavilion, Mi Qu’s notice for a disciple at the market attracted a lot of people.

While sipping on my tea, Ye Hua appeared. He must had just came back from the Celestial Palace.

“I heard from Mi Qu you are choosing a disciple for me” - he said, taking a seat beside me.

“Yes”

He looked around. “Have them all leave” - he whispers. “Non of them looks like they have the talent”

I took another glance at the villages. Just one look and he says non of them looks like they have the talent? That bad?

“In my opinion, you look like you would do well”

Me? I looked at him.

“But you truly no need to learn from me. It’s enough that the one of two of us can cook” - he smiled.

I’m just trying to share your burden. But if you think that way..

“Mi Qu” - I called him.

Mi Qu came over. “Aunt, which one has the Crown Prince chosen?” - he asked.

“He doesn’t like any of them. Tell them to disperse” - I said solemnly.

“J..Just like that?”

“Hmm..”

Mi Qu had no choice but to turn around. “That’s it, time to disperse”

Good thing Qing Qiu villages are not people who will get angry. “All right, let’s go” - they said and went off together.

“Then I’ll take the Little Prince for a boat ride” - Mi Qu excused himself with A-Li.

“Qian Qian, let’s go for a walk with me” - Ye Hua said and stood up.

We walked along the lake, looking at Mi Qu and A-Li. As long as Mi Qu is around taking care of A-Li, I feel assured. I did not need to worry as Mi Qu is a very responsible tree spirit.

“With your level of laziness, even this pond of flowers are left to survive on his own” - Ye Hua started his nagging again. “Yet they still end up looking like natural decorations”

What is he up to today? I wondered.

“Somehow they are not inferior to the Celestial Palace’s lotus pond. How rare”

“Not at all. This is just a normal pond. How can it be compared to your pond?” - I asked. “Your lotus pond has been written in countless of poems by immortals and mortals and has been praised by countless of people”

Ye Hua stop on his track and turned around. “Do you want to see it?”

Is he hinting something here?

“See what?” - I asked but knowing what this topic is about.

“Nine Heavens. The lotus pond”

Ah, I knew it. “There will be time” - I tried to find an excuse.

“According to what you said, you have not been to the Celestial Palace. Aren’t you curious?”

“There are many places in this world I have not been to. If I were to be curious of every place, won’t I be exhausted?

Before he could reply, I felt Mi Qu disappear.

“Where’s Mi Qu?” - Ye Hua asked, looking at A-Li who was left alone on the boat.

“Mi Qu has a barrier set up at the entrance of the cave” - I explained. “Someone must have stumbled on it”

Right on que, Mi Qu hurried back with the Cloud Clearing Fan in this hand.

“Aunt” - he passed me the fan.

“She’s here with the fan so quickly. She must have thought it through”

“So Aunt.. you mean..”

“Let her in”

“Yes” - Mi Qu hurries off again.
