Am I gaining popularity ahsbDJKSANJSL (Body language anon here, btw)
I will definitely have to create a sideblog to store my F1 ramblings because my head’s so full of them… And for the record, I’m NOT lurking (I am), I’m just on sick leave and don’t know what do to with this much time on my hands (well, no, I do, I’m just actively letting the colours red and blue rot my brain). It’s a triple header with LOADS of content, what was I even expecting, honestly.
Okay, so, for the record, as an ace person, the reason I got soooo hung-up on Lestappen was because of the shared enthusiasm and love for the sport. Sure, the drivers discuss the races all the time, but Lestappen DISCUSSes it, y’know? Shoving rivalries and crafted narrative and paddock politics aside, even. Because if you think about it, F1 is a big institution, an establishment. Racing is only a part of something way bigger. The drivers are no longer just drivers – they are public figures, brand ambassadors, influencers, the price of entering the big leagues. It comes with several layers and masks you’re forced to wear in order to get by because this institution mandates it. In my eyes it’s similar to workplace etiquette and rules and dress codes. But these guys, they grew up through the racing ranks, they live and breathe racing. Even if they are to put on layers upon layers upon layers to complete their role to stay afloat in the pinnacle of the racing world, that won’t erase one of the deepest layers that has the most connection to their “true” persona: the racing driver.
Drivers do tend to find this connection, but Max and Charles ESPECIALLY. Like, I’m presenting this with a clear dramatic flair, but at the end of the day we are all (fanfiction) writers, it’s part of our charm. So, I think Max and Charles can strip each other naked figuratively, they’ve found each other’s racing persona under all these layers. No, rather they’ve never lost contact with it, given their shared racing history.
As long as drivers have cameras trained on them, they’ll act – staying true to a role the sport has given them, shoes to fill, if you may. But every once in a while se can witness moments of them shedding these layers and be the racing drivers they grew up as – and these moments are always there with Lestappen. They are not teammates, they are not forced to act silly in front of the camera, and even when they were painted as big rivals they still refused to play part. Although I think they kinda did (and still do), it’s just that the term “rival” has such negatíve connotations our minds immediately associates it with big angry emotions and otbrusts and hate speech, when in fact, rivalry is a sort of partnership. But I digress.
Lestappen moments are few and far in between (not lately though), but they are so gold and their interactions tend to jump out to me because of what I’ve discussed above. They manage to strip down these layers and be honest and authentic when talking with each other. When they are talking, they aren’t Charles Leclerc il predestinato and Max Verstappen three time world champion, they are two racing nerds who share their passion. It’s fascinating to see how much connection they are able to make with the other’s inner child as well. Two kids, always racing, always thinking about getting into Formula 1. Re body language, I think this cumulates in their body language because as others have pointed out, they are very animated around each other – excited hand gestures, fidgeting, lots of moving around in general. This is them, without all the layers this institution handed them to wear. They are laser-focused when talking, following each other’s eyelines, only breaking eye-contact when there’s an outside force making them, wild hand gestures that compliment whatever they say, nodding (oh my god, there’s so much nodding!! – it isn’t just a sign of approval, it is also a sign that you’re listening, even if you don’t necessarily agree with what the other has to say), lots of syncronised movements, walking in tandem, etc. They are clearly engrossed and enamoured, whipping their heads to the side when someone chimes in (also a sign that you’re so deep in a convo that it catches you off guard when someone else speaks up, and it disrupts the flow of your conversation).
Of course, this might just be PR, the “friendly rivalry” narrative to take a jab at Lewis because it surfaced after the 2021 season, so the timing definitely adds up, but it’s still ongoing - in fact, getting stronger and stronger –, and why exactly? Max and Lewis seems to have made peace, this narrative is no longer relevant, AND Charles and Max aren’t championship rivals either. Another argument to back this up: many times they seem to act like this when the cameras aren’t directed at them – when someone else gives an interview, or before the drivers parade when they are just mingling and there isn’t clean focus on anyone.
BUT BUT BUT. This isn’t all. These are big, exaggerated, fast, “LOUD” movements that are the testament of their engrossment in their shared passion. What I find equally as fascinating (if not more) is the tiny movements – movements you only pick up if you pay close attention. I’m classifying these tiny moments as something separate from the big and “loud” ones because I think they aren’t the same, they stem from something else, not their passionate and insightful conversations they usually have (probably about racing or something they have in common):
These tiny movements (like the foot tremble I pointed out in an earlier ask) surface during their intense talks as well, but get overshadowed by the big “loud” movements. However, when racing talk isn’t on the plate they seeem to be the dominant movements. So, and now the assumptions and guessing game can truly begin because I cannot yet tell exactly what these tiny, almost nervous movements are exactly. These guys are there, laid bare in front of each other in the middle of a loud and spectacular circus, and these movements are so quiet and soft and fond and gentle and genuine in comparison to the institution of PR and politics around them. Am I exaggerating this narrative? Definitely so. But I firmly believe these analyses do come from more than just a delusional mind of a writer.

I was so excited when I started reading this ask and as expected, I was far from disappointed by the end of it. Your insight into their body language and behavior around each other is truly astounding, and you have no idea how much I enjoy reading it. Not to mention how much I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to share your thoughts with me.
Needless to say, your analysis makes so much sense and is giving such value to watching their interactions now.

I can see Max being son of Ares or Zeus and I’m even more into the Zeus idea. Idk why really but I get that vibe from him.
Oscar could be son of Athena for me. He’s level headed and calm, knows his facts and has this unique humour that not everyone understands. Also I feel like people underestimate him with his mind and all so I’d say it fits the Athena children vibe. Or Hades actually. I could see that too because of his calmness and strength but it’s not as fitting for me as Athena.
Lando is a son of Poseidon to me. He’s super chaotic, does some stupid shit but mostly comes out unscathed, is everywhere and nowhere at the same time, also the humour just fits for me. This is more of a resemblance to Percy but I think both of them think of themselves like a goofballs and not so smart but caring and people around them think they are actually quite scary (like Percy when he’s fighting and Lando on track??? Idk if it makes sense in general but it does to me and delulu is my solulu)
Charles as son of Apollo is so good for me i don’t even remember what I had in mind for him really haha
Carlos as son of Area. Just fits for me
max is soooo a son of zues and theres no doubt in my mind he can fly and takes his gf on flights alll the time esp at night. he’d fly them up to the highest point they could get to stargaze. he’d also love to shock his girl, like little shocks of static electricity every time they hold hands or he places his hand on her back or waist. he’d find a way to send currents of electricity to her, like tapping on the dinner table and she suddenly feels a light tingling n knows her bf is watching her. or she picks up her fork and it shocks her a little. idk how electricity works but in my head bc he’s half god he can do whatever he wants w lightning. can so see it storming over him when he gets angry and gf is standing next to him w an umbrella. it’d be so funny.
i think oscar is athena or hades too! i was gonna say that but i wasn’t sure if anyone else had other ideas. i think he’s very smart already but as a son of athena he would by far be the smartest at camp and seek out all kinds of knowledge everywhere. he’s always got his face shoved in a book on fight strategies or is reading an encyclopedia to expand his knowledge. knows multiple languages and is always correcting people on random things, gently and not condescending, just like, ‘hey actually- let me correct you!” and people are kind of annoyed by the boy genius but also endeared by the random facts he’s always spouting.
i can so see him as a son of hades, still really nice but gloomy or kinda melancholic and stuff. he’s so kind and careful with everyone around him and scared of hurting anyone, knows he’s very powerful and doesn’t want people to fear him for it, or dislike him more than they already do. he grows up all alone like nico and bianca do in the percy jackson series, can you imagine him living in the lotus casino his whole life then being brought out? can imagine him with the bubbliest girl at camp, a child of demeter or something who brings life everywhere she goes. like there’s a trail of daisies following her everywhere she goes. her and oscar go on picnics and she grows fresh fruits for them to snack on, picking berries from vines and feeding them directly to him. he’s never tasted something as good as the fresh strawberries she presses to his lips. when he eats ambrosia, he tastes a mix of fresh strawberries and her kisses.
lando is so a son of poseidon u got it spot on!!! agree w everything you said. genuinely spends 90% of his free time swimming and he loves taking his gf into the ocean and showing her around the underwater cities. also sneaking away to makeout under the lake because he can breathe underwater, and other things, and it certainly impresses his partners when he shows them how long he can hold his breath.

I still think there’s a decent chance for Charles and Ferrari to win the championship this year. Being 38 points behind at the midway point is frustrating because we know that without the strategy fuckups the gap would be much lower and Charles very much could be leading the championship. But, seeing how quickly the points can shift, I hope Ferrari are going to put up a proper fight. I know they said they were going to wait until after the summer break to decide a 1-2 but seeing the points difference between Charles and Carlos, this may be the best time to start solely focusing on catching Max. We don’t want the gap to get any bigger because the Ferrari drivers are fighting against each other.
And seeing Mattia’s comments about Charles making “the difference a champion makes” and his rumored frustration with Carlos after the sprint, I do think Ferrari have made up their minds about the 1-2. It comes down to which driver has a better chance of beating Max and seeing all the battles they’ve had this year, Charles clearly makes the most sense. I hope they go into France with an established system and that if Carlos is the 2nd, he is ready to defend and fight for Charles like he said he would. Putting aside all that’s happened in the past few weeks, I do think they are one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid and Ferrari has a strong car (if you don’t consider these reliability issues lol). The longer they wait to establish the 1-2, the more they are damaging themselves so I hope this past weekend was a turning point for them. Charles has moved up into 2nd place and there’s still all to the play for so I hope Ferrari have made up their minds and will use strategy to their advantage from now on.

Yeah 38 points isn't that bad and we know that the car is good. I just hope that they fix the reliability of the engine soon and that that'll mean not too many more grid penalties.
I've had a look and it would look so different with no strategy blunders:
the * indicates I have changed something, in this case for both Monaco and Silverstone that Ferrari got a 1-2 because lbr they should've. Fastest laps stayed the same.
And then it would only be 9 points to Max and it would be 70 points between Charles and Carlos. And just reading that kinda makes me angry again. I can forgive the engine issues because shit happens but man the strategy blunders still hurt af.
I don't think that they'll even really really need to establish a hierarchy as such. like they don't have to sit Carlos down and tell him he is nr 2. But it would be a great start to keep them uptodate on the others strategy and telling them to not fight especially not if one of them is saving tyres. Also just using their brain when it comes to strategy for Charles would also be a start. And imo I don't think they really need to have the full on nr2 chat for that. Also they need to be more ruthless with letting the faster one through. Because they ruined Charles medium tyres in Silverstone.
But yeah Mattia and like all the important people at Ferrari clearly have a favourite and a driver who they think can win them things. I just hope that they will tell the strategy department too.

CAN: no engine pen for Charles, everyone said Ferrari was the faster Car -> Charles wins -> Max 2nd, Carlos 3rd, Checo is still out because I read that his issues were caused by his crash but idk
SIL: Fer 1-2 -> Checo 3rd (assuming they had pitted Charles under the SC)
AUT: Fer 1-2 -> Max 3rd
This hurts soooo much!
But it also means that the results are right there to get they just need to also fucking get them.

my most hated character: Woodes Rogers..what an awful asshole
my OTP: that’s a good question...the show is so queer and has so many good couples it’s hard to say. Flint/Thomas Hamilton is iconic, Maxanne is amazing, so are the poly relationships. I think I read the most fics for Silverflint though, because of all the untapped potential and the fact that it’s the pivotal relationship in the show. But it’s hard to choose.
my NOTP: Eleanor x Woodes Rogers...it was fittingly tragic for her character but I hate what being with him did to her (and she was already bad with Vane...her downfall really is her taste in men lmao)
favorite episode: the one where we discover Flint and Thomas are a thing...the “know no shame” thing still gives me chills. But the last episode is also a close contender.
saddest death: Miranda’s death shocked me so much every time I watch the show I stop right before because I can’t stand seeing it again lmao. It was just so brutal. Also Eleanor’s was so tragic but at least it was kind of previsible w her actions
favorite season: not season 1, it’s kind of mediocre compared to the rest. Hmmmm otherwise they’re all amazing
