beaujester week 2020 domesticity
Breakfast Time Wars
Day 2 of Beaujester week 2020, just be aware that it features my ot3 beauyashter/bashter not just beaujester so if that’s not your bag please feel free to skip and not look under the cut, I wont’ mind. hope you enjoy it if you do read it
Fjord, just Fjord, of the Mighty Nein hated mornings.  He didn’t used to hate mornings, he had to wake up early at the orphanage because the matrons needed to be awful to their charges.  On working on the docks and ships he had to get up early because things needed to be done, especially by Fjord since he was the youngest.  But now he really hates mornings at the Xhorhouse than anything before.
They’ve had a few weeks of downtime, so they decided to spend it at the Xhorhouse, save Veth who has been spending her time in Nicodranas. They’ve developed some habits with the amount of time after the wedding.  Caduceus would normally be the first one up, despite the sun not coming up he would wake up every morning and start cooking breakfast for everyone.  Beau would wake him up around 6:00 to go for a run and do some other workout stuff that would leave him in pain.  He was getting better and hadn’t thrown up since they got there.  After an hour or more likely two he would catch up to Beau who had finished much earlier and was sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast.  He would collapse into his chair and start with a plate of whatever Caddy had made that day and some coffee, and then it would begin.
Yasha would come down from the room she shared with Beau and Jester in her sleep clothes and take her seat at the breakfast table next to Beau like she would every morning.  Sleepily she would grab Beau by the chin and plant a kiss on her. “Morning wife,” she said sleepily.
As talkative as Beau normally was, she could just mumbled a, “morning,” while her cheeks darkened.
Fjord always groaned watching things go on, not that he had a problem with Yasha kissing Beau, they were wives after all. Well he did because they were both practically his sisters and he wasn’t too big on public displays of affection.  Not to mention that it meant that… like clockwork.
Loud banging came from down the stairs as Jester ran down the steps in a huff. “Yasha!” She shouted and pointed an accusatory finger at the large Aasimar woman.  “How dare you kiss my wife,” she yelled in mock anger.
“Yes Jester,” Yasha said completely unfazed, which Fjord had to assume had something to do with this being a daily routine.  The Yasha they first traveled with would be a blubbering blushy mess if someone accused her of kissing their wife.  “I kissed your wife, and I’m about to do it again if you watch me,” more awake she grabbed Beau’s chin, not that she had to that hard, and dragged the smaller monk into another deeper kiss.  Beau didn’t seem to complain as she was, she seemed all for being kissed by one of her beautiful wives.
“Augh,” Jester let out, Fjord was so sick of that sound, “how dare you!”  “Well if you’re going to kiss my wife,” she said pulling out the seat to the opposite side of Beau, and promptly sat down on the monk’s lap.  “Then I’m going to kiss your wife.”  Right on cue she grabbed Beau’s face away from Yasha and pulled her into a kiss of her own.  It was a deep kiss, with tongue, something the sweet innocent Tiefling that Fjord met so long ago in Nicodranas would never dare to plant on someone.  Maybe she would dream, Fjord had to admit, Jester always did have a dirtier mind than she had any right to in Fjord’s opinion.
Yasha and Jester went about this ridiculous cycle a few more times, they mixed it up a few times. Yasha picked up Beau, with Jester on her lap and placed the two of them on her lap with her immense strength.
“Seriously Beau you hate this kind of cutesy bullshit stuff normally,” Fjord said frustrated that he had to sit through this garbage every day.  It was one thing to do after the three of them got hitched, but it’s been a month and he can’t see eggs without watching his sister make out with her wives.
“Normally I’m not the one getting smooched by two gorgeous women,” Beau said taking deep breathes.  She could run for an hour straight without needing a break but a few minutes of kissing beautiful women and she’s sucking wind.
“But every day,” Fjord whined a bit, he knew it was a losing battle.  Telling Beau not to kiss willing beautiful women, especially those who loved her enough to marry her, she might as well tell the sun not to shine.  Well the Dynasty sort of made that possible with magic, so that wasn’t exactly fair, no one, no magic would be able to force Beau not to stop kissing her wives.
“I’m just sitting here man,” Beau said with Jester’s arm around her on Yasha’s lap, “I can’t help it if I’m irresistible to Lavorre women.”  They agreed to take Jester’s name, Nydoorin was a name Yasha took from the tribe, it didn’t have as much weight to it after she lost her first wife.  And While Yasha and Jester considered taking the Lionett name to fuck with Beau’s family, but Beau vetoed it.  She wanted the life she started with her new life with she didn’t want their last name out of spite, she wanted a name that was built with love from the start, and Lavorre felt right for the three of them.  Fjord had felt nothing but pride when Beau said that, it felt good to know his little sister was growing up.  He also definitely did not cry when Beau asked him to be her best man.  Definitely not.
“Well can you guys go upstairs at least when you’re kissing and not at the breakfast table,” Fjord asked.  “Just once I’d like to eat breakfast without watching this scene of depravity.”
“Don’t be a party pooper Fjord,” Jester said, sticking her tongue out at Fjord all in good fun.  “Though he’s right, we should go upstairs.”
“Yeah Fjord,” Beau said once her mouth was able to do something other than kissing her wives, don’t be such a party pooper.  I could use a bath though, I suppose,” Beau said remembering how sweaty she was.
“Just wait,” Jester told her, “we’re just going to get sweaty again so you might as well wait until we can all take a bath together.”
“I also like the way you smell,” Yasha said nuzzling her face deep into Beau’s neck and breathing in deep, “it does things to me.” She said in a voice that definitely did things to Beau and Jester. Fjord missed the days that she was so quiet and shy he didn't have to hear her say things like this.
“You know what, I’m just going to take my breakfast out in the garden and enjoy it in the bounty of the Wildmother, like a good paladin, and get away from you kissing people.” Fjord said, picking up his plate and cup of coffee and left to go outside.
“You don’t know that,” Beau shouted, “the Wildmothers a lesbian too, you might catch her making out with Erathis in our garden with your luck.”
Fjord prayed to Melora that he wouldn’t see that in the garden.  When he heard Jester say, “to the room Yasha, wife of my wife,” Jester said not leaving Beau’s lap.  The larger barbarian easily and gently picked up both women as if she was holding flowers they often gifted her.  Fjord felt like going for another run somewhere far away, he might be happy for his friends, but it didn’t mean he wanted to be anywhere around them.  He knew it was inevitable, since tomorrow would be the same, but he could hope.  “Oh Yasha your arms are so big,” and a “Beau your abs are so cut, I could eat off of them,” from Jester upstairs made Fjord leave double time.

Cantrips and spells I have my eye on for Fjord and Caleb (Veth doesn’t learn any new ones this level, though she could swap one out if she wanted - L13 is going to be a big one for her. The clerics don’t get any new spells and they always can prepare anything off their list so there’s nothing new; they get plane shift and fire storm next level though so that’s pretty exciting. L13 in general is an exciting level for battle classes; casters get 7th level spells then but they get subclass stuff at L14).
Fjord - new cantrip. True Strike would be a great buff choice, or he can go with more damage and do chill touch (necrotic, neither chill nor a touch); poison spray (exactly what it says on the tin), frostbite (cold + disadvantage), infestation (poison + forced movement), or toll the dead (Jester uses this a lot, it’s great). Magic Stone seems kind of silly at this level when the party has plenty of magic weapons, thunderclap isn’t worth it if you have thunderstep already, and the other utility spells are either already covered (mage hand) or don’t make sense flavor-wise (why take Friends when you have friends...with Guidance)?
Caleb - what can’t he take, really. But looking specifically at the wizard 6th level spell list, Globe of Invulnerability is super useful, especially if they’re in a particularly rough battle - it can improve Caleb’s chances of staying up (and he can still cast non-concentration damage spells) long enough to kill the enemy without needing healing. Otiluke’s Freezing Sphere will meanwhile be extremely useful at sea (tons of cold damage; freezes water). Otto’s Irresistible Dance caught Vax and Scanlan back in the Feywild (although it’s only a minute here) and will effectively force the victim to do the macarena instead of moving. Sunbeam gives him a great weapon against undead, although to be fair they have two clerics and a paladin in the party. Also it does a fuckload of damage and blinds enemies regardless of source. Investiture of flame is incredibly on brand and extremely awesome; Mental Prison doesn’t seem his style but if he cast it on Ikithon I wouldn’t be mad; Scatter could be good if you didn’t want to fight a large group; and Tenser’s transformation is the Pumat Swole spell.

Day One: Shadows
A very happy @essek-week everyone! Let’s get straight into it, shall we?
Travelling as a group can be hard sometimes, Caleb knows this well enough. You get to know each other’s little habits and idiosyncracies; you learn who is a morning person and who is not, who can be disturbed from their rest without incident and who will punch you the instant you get close.
Essek, who has been alone for over a century, seems to be having some trouble getting used to the close quarters.
He has learned quickly enough to leave Caduceus alone when he cooks, and that nothing will stop Jester from interrupting his conversations with Caleb—no matter how private they may be.
Caleb can see his frustrations—he shares them, in fact—especially in light of recent changes.
It feels inevitable almost, the gravity that draws them together too powerful to ignore. Soft conversations have led to softer touches, whispered words, and a tension that Caleb can practically feel in the air. They have kissed, once: a simple, unhurried thing at the end of a shared watch, broken with the promise to find more time soon.
That was three days ago.
Now, Caleb can feel frustration building inside him, worsening with every stolen moment that is inevitibly interrupted. His fingers work through Frumpkin’s fur, restless. Caleb’s eyes are fixed on the other side of the fire, where Essek sits reading—or at least pretending to. His gaze constantly flickers above the flames, meeting Caleb’s own in a glance that says everything. He tilts his head to one side, as if he is stretching his neck, though his eyes flick towards the trees surrounding them and the many shadows between them.
Caleb nods his head in understanding, setting Frumpkin aside and stretching out his arms. “Excuse me a moment,” he says to whoever happens to be listening, “I need to stretch my legs.”
Beau scoffs from her bedroll. “Just say you need to pee, man.” She rolls over, seemingly settling down for the night.
“Don’t go too far,” says Veth, looking up from the crossbow she is meticulously polishing. “you never know what might be out there.”
“Hopefully not too much,” Fjord says, a tinge of concern in his voice, “Caduceus is still out looking for mushrooms.”
Their voices fade as Caleb walks away, passing through the shadows of the trees, searching for a spot within the moonlight-dappled clearing to wait. Anticipation runs through his very bones, the thrill of desire sending a shiver up his spine. He thinks he can catch Essek’s voice on the edges of his hearing and wets his lips, straining for the sound of footsteps—still something he is getting used to where Essek is involved. It has taken some time to break the habit of floating, and now Essek has the blisters to prove it.
It only takes a few minutes before there is a rustle and a crackling of branches, steadily coming closer. Caleb can see the gleam of star-bright hair and his heart catches in his chest. He steps forward with a wave, knowing that Essek can see him as clear as day, even within the shadows that surround them.
“So,” he says as Essek stops only a few paces away.
“So.” Essek’s fingers twist in the hem of his cloak, so much lighter than the heavy mantle of his Shadowhand days. It drapes over his narrow shoulders, making him look far smaller than he already is, and all Caleb wants is to take him in his arms. He hangs back, though, awkwardness filling the silence between them.
Caleb rubs over his arms, unsure of why the easy rapport between them is suddenly so strained. “It is, ah, nice to finally get a chance to talk to you alone.”
“Yes, it is.” Essek’s pale gold eyes glimmer in the darkness and Caleb feels like a moth, irresistably drawn towards that flame.
“Essek—”
“Caleb, I—”
They start at the same time, moving together, Essek’s hands finding Caleb’s own and gripping tight. “Caleb,” Essek repeats, “can I kiss you?”
A soft laugh escapes Caleb’s lips and he leans down, voice dropping to a near whisper. “I would like nothing more.”
“Oh, thank goodness,” Essek breathes out, already wrapping his arms around Caleb’s neck. “I have been trying to get you alone for days.”
Caleb nods, brushing a stray wave of hair from Essek’s face. “The perils of travelling with a group, I suppose.”
Essek’s soft smile is barely noticeable in the shade of the trees, but Caleb knows it is there. “We will be in town tomorrow,” he says, “I am sure we can find some down time together then.”
“Good,” Essek leans up, murmuring so close that Caleb can feel the tickle of breath on his lips, “I’m tired of sneaking around in the shadows.” He pulls Caleb that fraction of an inch closer, pressing their lips together in a tentative kiss that Caleb quickly deepens.
Essek’s fingers comb into Caleb’s hair and he tightens his arms around him, needing to feel Essek as close as possible. He parts his lips, tongue running over the faint points of Essek’s teeth, a sense of deep contentment blooming to life inside him. It has taken so long for them to get to this point, and now that it is here he never wants to let Essek go.
“Oh hey, are you foraging, too?” The sound of Caduceus’ voice breaks through the silence and Caleb and Essek immediately spring apart, straying back into the shadows. Their hands remain joined, however, and as Caduceus’ approaches, his gaze falls to that point.
“Ah, okay, maybe I’ll just head back then.”
“No, it’s okay, we’re just heading back, too.” Essek gives Caleb’s fingers a slight squeeze, gently tugging him towards the camp. He doesn’t let go and Caleb smiles, stepping up alongside him and sliding an arm around his waist.
Their friends will talk, and there will be questions, but when Caleb looks into Essek’s eyes he sees only happiness.
It will do them some good to step out of the shadows.

freckledmccree replied to your post “Cantrips and spells I have my eye on for Fjord and Caleb (Veth doesn’t...”
OH I forgot to mention. I don't think this is the BEST choice, but I lowkey want Fjord to take Lightning Lure just bc I think it'd be neato if he had not stormy spells. Obviously a WELL thought out rationale.
Okay I can’t respond to all the replies on this post although I have to admit I did not realize True Strike was so unpopular (also @luckthebard has spoken the image of Caleb casting Otto’s Irresistible Dance on a dragon turtle into being and I really hope this happens), but this one wins for Best Fjord Cantrip. As damage spells go it’s fine but The Mighty Nein’s combat strategy has always been a case of greater than the sum of its parts. Lightning Lure allows Fjord to drag the target (on a failed strength save) towards him.
This allows the following possible scenarios, to be chosen based on how people are positioned and the initiative order:
Moving such that lightning lure will also drag the target away from a party member who is not great in melee (Caleb, Caduceus)
Moving such that lightning lure will also drag the target towards another party member who is best in melee (Beau, Yasha)
Just using it as designed and dragging the person towards himself, also a solid melee fighter.
Dragging the target next to literally anyone in the party who’s okay on health so Veth can get sneak attack.
(I feel bad leaving out Jester here but the thing is Jester is, like Fjord, able to work either in melee or at a distance and her duplicate even means she can simultaneously be doing things in melee and at a distance; and also Fjord can do contact healing but otherwise he’s pretty much all offense and attack whereas Jester has area of effect/healing, so literally any of these options could help Jester depending on how the battle is going)
The storm imagery is just icing on the cake at that point. Anyway is it 7 pm pacific yet?
