[ lalisa manoban. 21. cis female. she/her. | muse 13b ] big girls cry by sia just came on the radio and it made me think of trinity hart. they’ve been in sundance for two years and they’re currently a cam girl. if you’re looking for them, try by inkspired, locals say they’re there a lot. [ cece. she/her. 21+. cst. ]
okay, are we done reading soft fluffy yuri’s intro because here’s my Final Girl™ and she’s a wreck. we love her but she’s a wreck. she’s a new muse and i’m actually really excited to give her a go because i’ve never written anything quite like her so please be gentle with me.
tw domestic violence
trinity grew up in the foster system. she doesn’t know her birth parents and only knows that they gave her up willingly, which she’s taken to mean they preferred some vice like drugs or drinking or gambling over her.
one could say the system has made her a pessimist.
she didn’t have a particularly bad experience in and out of foster homes. it just sort of roughed her up around the edges, gave her a chip on her shoulder an attitude problem. that made her deemed a trouble child which only led to her being angrier and really it’s all a cycle that stems from feeling unwanted okay sob story we get it
cue rini (nicknames also accepted: trin and rin) becoming the tiny edgy punk girl in fishnets and combat boots cliche who was loud and crass for attention
and attention she got! mostly in the form of detentions and at-home punishments like grounding and stuff but it was whatever. she was becoming a turbulent force to be reckoned with, a rebel without a care.
she had her first cigarette age 12 and her first drink at 14. she tried drugs at 15 and just generally got in with the wrong crowds. dating around started at 16 and she did so in earnest. guys, girls, it really didn’t matter. she found a way to be the center of attention and get whatever she thought she was lacking at home.
she continued down her tyrannical path of recklessness until she was finally out of the system and forced to live on her own. that’s how she REALLY found trouble. in one of her shady dealing crowds -- the kind that sneaks under 21s into clubs etc -- she met a man who seemed like everything she needed. he was self sufficient, into raising the same hell as her and had an attitude that could top her own.
it started out as a fire meets gasoline type relationship where they both just were engulfed in something intense and passionate and way too hot. they burned through the honeymoon stage fuel quickly though. it was only after agreeing to live together (after a year of dating) in sundance (where he had connections and she knew next to no one) that she began to see the dark side of the coin.
what she had once thought were fun shared vices were actual problems for him -- i mean, they’re probably problems for her too but she doesn’t turn into a whole different person without them. he left his job to move away with her and so money was getting tighter and tighter. i don’t even know if she graduated high school -- i’m leaning towards no so like what employable skills does she have, u know? she was entirely reliant upon him -- he was the clyde to her bonnie and that was the problem.
an ‘attitude to match hers’ soon overpowered hers and the situation became desperate. i’m not going to get into detail for obvious reasons but the crux of it that he’s trapped her in an abusive relationship that she can’t see clearly for what it is because she’s over a year in and also what examples does she have of a healthy relationship, you know?
she definitely does know that she wants out because there’s only so much physical and emotional repercussions one can take in the name of ‘love’. which is where both her occupation AND the plot i’ve put her in come into play.
so the plot basically states that shes a LOUD neighbor and her apartment next door neighbor hates her. well they’re constantly blasting the television or music to cover up domestic spats, parties, and drug trades (he’s got a night job at a gas station to cover rent but like the rest is shady drug business). BUT rini also pumps up the tunes for a completely different reason.
when whats-his-name (he’s npc and doesn’t deserve rights so no name for now) is out for jobs or getting stoned with his pals, rini hosts a live cam show. she may have a weak will when it comes to just flat out leaving her partner but she’s determined to financially put enough away for when she is able. ofc she wants to cover up any evidence of her side job in case her boyf comes home early but also the music is good background noise for what she does
she’s grown successful at it and it’s a way of getting some of that power back that she feels like she’s lost. she also pulls in decent money which mostly goes back into buying things for the show (and places to hide it) but also gets put away for savings in case she ever finds the motivation to kick whatshisname out or leave. she goes by an alias and wears wigs and face masks and contacts and anything to obscure her identity
PERSONALITY because really that’s what’s actually important -- she’s the type to fight a shitty situation with aggression of her own. she’s standoffish and hard to like but once you’re in her good graces, she’s the most loyal mf you could ever need. definitely still enjoys all her vices save for the sleeping around she did as a teen. she’s covered in tats (which she obviously covers for her show) and loves hanging around the tattoo parlor
plot ideas
drug buddies
badass girl squad
just a gang of misfits please
someone who watches her show / may or may not know it’s her
constant bickering friendship
frenemies
actual enemies
a crush that can never go anywhere
childhood friend (idk where she’s from so that’s flexible)
someone @ the tattoo shop who befriends her
some loyal pals
best friend
someone who recognizes... things are fishy u know. goes out of their way to try and help but subtly.
my creative juices are running Low to empty so just like this and i’ll come to u

Four of Swords. Art by James Pascoe, from the California Tarot.
Ina Donna Coolbrith was an American poet, writer, librarian, and a prominent figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary community. Born the niece of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founder Joseph Smith, she left the Mormon community as a child to enter her teens in Los Angeles, where she began to publish poetry.   “The first white child to enter CA by Beckwourth Pass, in the first covered wagon train traveling that route." She terminated a youthful failed marriage to make her home in San Francisco, and met writers Bret Harte and Charles Warren Stoddard with whom she formed the "Golden Gate Trinity" closely associated with the literary journal Overland Monthly. Her poetry received positive notice from critics and established poets such as Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce and Alfred Lord Tennyson. She held literary salons at her home in Russian Hill to introduce new writers to publishers. Coolbrith befriended the poet Joaquin Miller and helped him gain global fame. Her first love was poetry, but she earned a living as a librarian in the 1870s, first in Oakland where she mentored Jack London and Isabel Duncan, and later at the Mercantile Library and the Bohemian Club, where she was an honorary member. She worked 16-hour days, 6 days a week, and slept on a cot in the library.
California was her muse, her inspiration —- she loved the state’s natural beauty. "On June 30, 1915, Coolbrith was named California's poet laureate, and she continued to write poetry for eight more years. Her style was more than the usual melancholic or uplifting themes expected of women—she included a wide variety of subjects in her poems, which were noted as being "singularly sympathetic" and "palpably spontaneous”.  Her sensuous descriptions of natural scenes advanced the art of Victorian poetry to incorporate greater accuracy without trite sentiment, foreshadowing the Imagist school and the work of Robert Frost."

Eric Benét Jordan (born October 15, 1966), known professionally as Eric Benét, is an American R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, who has received a total of four Grammy nominations to date for his musical work.
Biography
Benét was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is the youngest of five siblings.
Benét sang with a Top 100-style group called Gerard in the late 1980s. Benét, his sister Lisa, and his cousin George Nash Jr. formed a band called Benét and released a self-titled album in 1992, and it went on to sell over 100,000 copies. Two years later, Eric Benét broke onto the music scene with his solo career and signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his debut solo album, True to Myself in 1996. His second album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999 and featured his smash hit "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)". The song rose to #1 on the US Billboard R&B charts (for 3 weeks), was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group". The album also won a Soul Train Music Award for "Best R&B/Soul Album, Male".
Benét's career, however, was interrupted by a series of personal tragedies. His father died of cancer. In addition his girlfriend, Tami Marie Stauff, died on April 24, 1993, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, leaving Eric a single father to their one-year-old daughter, India (born 1991). Mom Joyce Jordan.
He married actress Halle Berry in January 2001, but by early October 2003 they had separated, with the divorce finalized in January 2005.
On July 31, 2011, he married Prince's ex-wife, Manuela Testolini, who gave birth to their first child, a girl named Lucia Bella, on December 21, 2011. They welcomed their second daughter together, Amoura Luna, in July 2014.
Career
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself in 1996. Individual songs from the album were successful, including the top-ten R&B hits "Spiritual Thang", "Femininity" and "Let's Stay Together", which originally appeared on the soundtrack of the film A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.
In between albums, Eric collaborated with his then-labelmates Somethin' for the People on their 1997 album This Time It's Personalsinging leads on the single "Act Like You Want It". His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999. Its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day in the Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male.
Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD. He contributed vocals to the post-Katrina charity single, "Heart of America" along with Michael McDonald, Wynonna Judd, and Terry Dexter. He has also lent his vocals to many jazz albums for such artists as Wayman Tisdale, George Duke, Chris Botti, Jeff Lorber, Boney James, etc.
Benét recorded his following album Better and Better in 2001, but Warner Bros. rejected to release this album and forced him to stay in the R&B genre. Due to the controversy about music style and creative freedom, Benét changed to Reprise-distributed label Friday Records and recorded his next album, Hurricane. Thus Hurricane became his third (released) studio album on June 21, 2005 in the US. "I Wanna Be Loved" was the song that received the most airplay. The single reached number two on the Urban Adult Contemporary chart.
His fourth album Love & Life was released on September 9, 2008. It debuted at number eleven on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, making this his own highest peak position since A Day in the Life in 1999. The first single "You're the Only One" is also his first top 20 hit on the R&B chart in two years.
Lost in Time was Benét's fifth studio album which was released in the US on November 30, 2010. The first single "Sometimes I Cry" reached number one on the Hot Adult R&B Songs Chart. With its musical direction representing Benet's homage to the sweet soul sound of the early to mid-1970s, the album featured duets with Faith Evans; Chrisette Michelle; Ledisi; and Eddie Levert of The O'Jays.
On June 5, 2012 Eric then released his latest album The One. It was the first album released on Benét's newly formed record label Jordan House Records, which he created in partnership with EMI. "Real Love" was the first single off The One and was the #1 added song to Urban AC when shipped to radio in October 2011.
In 2013 Eric Benet's 6th studio album, The One, won him the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Award for Best Male Vocalist. The Onedelivered 3 big hit tracks including 'Runnin,' 'Real Love,' and 'Harriett Jones.'
In April 2014, Benet signed R&B singer-songwriter Calvin Richardson and Goapele to his imprint along with BMG/Primary Wave Music to release their upcoming albums in the US.
In 2014, Eric Benet released an international album, The Other One, teaming up with the European production collective, The Afropeans to revisit his 2012 album The One.
Later that year, he then released an album of classic cover songs, exclusively distributed in Japan, titled, From E to U, Vol. 1.
In April 2016, he announced a new single "Sunshine" set to premiere on May 13, ahead of his eighth studio album due in the fall.
On October 7, 2016 Benét released his eponymous seventh studio album and first major album release since 2012's "The One", the album featured guest appearances from Tamia, Arturo Sandoval and MC Lyte.
Acting career
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on For Your Love (TV series) (1998–2002). He made his film debut alongside Mariah Carey in Glitter (2001). He has a recurring role on the MTV scripted show Kaya (2007) where he plays a music producer. Benet appeared on Half & Half in which he portrayed Reece Wilcox in 2005.
His second feature film role Trinity Goodheart premiered at the American Black Film Festival on July 9, 2011 and is set to premiere on GMC on August 20, 2011.
In Fall of 2013, Eric Benet brought his talents to the television screen when he appeared on the second season of BET's hit television show, The Real Husbands of Hollywood. Benet introduced the world to his comedic skills as a guest star alongside Kevin Hart, Bobby Brown, and Boris Kodjoe. The Real Husbands of Hollywood is filmed in a style similar to that of Bravo's popular television series, The Real Housewives.

Without Enough Boots on the Ground, California’s Vaccination Efforts Falter
California’s vaccination rates have stagnated, particularly in Black and Latino inner-city neighborhoods and in rural towns. County health officials, who say trust is their most important commodity, need more money for one-on-one interactions with holdouts, but the state has instead largely funneled money to advertising firms and tech companies. (Angela Hart, 6/28)
The New York Times: A Study Finds That The Pfizer And Moderna Vaccines Could Offer Protection For Years The vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna set off a persistent immune reaction in the body that may protect against the coronavirus for years, scientists reported on Monday. The findings add to growing evidence that most people immunized with the mRNA vaccines may not need boosters, so long as the virus and its variants do not evolve much beyond their current forms — which is not guaranteed. People who recovered from Covid-19 before being vaccinated may not need boosters even if the virus does make a significant transformation. (Mandavilli, 6/28)
Bay Area News Group: California Now Averaging Fewer Than 100,000 Daily COVID Vaccinations  California’s rate of vaccination against COVID-19 keeps slowing down, with more than a quarter of eligible residents still not vaccinated. California is averaging 91,783 daily shots as of Thursday, according to data from the state’s Department of Public Health. That’s a 26 percent decline from the previous week’s average, and a significant drop from April 24, when the state was averaging 365,686 daily shots. California’s daily vaccination average increased slightly shortly after introducing its vaccine lottery, which included cash prizes for inoculated residents. (Castaneda, 6/26)
The Bakersfield Californian: Lost Hills Reaches Exceptional Vaccination Rate With Help Of The Wonderful Co.  A sustained effort by one of Kern’s largest private employers has helped produce one of the county’s highest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the remote town of Lost Hills. The county Public Health Services Department on Friday credited Los Angeles-based grower The Wonderful Co. for Lost Hills being one of only five areas in Kern that has achieved U.S. President Joe Biden’s goal of having no less than 70 percent of adults receive at least one shot of the vaccine by Independence Day. (Cox, 6/27)
San Francisco Chronicle: This Bay Area County Sorts COVID Into Vaccinated And Unvaccinated. It’s ‘a Tale Of Two Counties’ Contra Costa is the first county in the Bay Area to publicly break out new coronavirus cases among vaccinated and unvaccinated residents, and the numbers show a stark disparity — virtually all those now being infected have not gotten their shots. As of Friday, the daily average of new cases in Contra Costa County over the previous week among those who have been fully vaccinated was 0.6 per 100,000 residents. But it was 6 per 100,000 among those who are not inoculated — 10 times higher. (Vaziri, 6/26)
Southern California News Group: Younger California Kids: To Vax Or Not To Vax? That Is The Question Come fall, parents of elementary schoolchildren will make a decision that’s weightier than which backpack to buy for the new school year: Deputize Junior as a foot soldier in the war against COVID-19’s spread in the U.S. and get the child vaccinated? Or sit this one out with the knowledge that younger kids are far less likely to get severe illness than their grandparents? As school bells ring in September, data from clinical trials of the Pfizer vaccine on children ages 5 to 11 are expected to go to the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization. Moderna’s trials in younger kids are not far behind. (Sforza, 6/28)
The Bakersfield Californian: Kern County Superior Court Won’t Require Masks For Vaccinated  Starting Monday, Kern County Superior Court will no longer require people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to wear a face mask to enter the courthouses, but still encourages masks. People entering courthouses without a mask will be considered to have self-attested that they are fully vaccinated; proof can be requested, according to a court news release. (6/26)
inewsource: Three Post-Vaccination COVID Deaths Confirmed In San Diego County At least three San Diego County residents have died of COVID-19 after being vaccinated, according to county officials and medical examiner records. The county announced earlier this month the death of a fully vaccinated woman. She was 70 and died in March after being hospitalized. At the time it was considered the first such death, but medical examiner records obtained by inewsource show a 73-year-old vaccinated man at the county-run Edgemoor Hospital in Santee died of COVID-19 on Feb. 2. (Plummer, 6/26)
LA Daily News: LA County Reports 239 New Coronavirus Cases; Concern Endures Over Infectious ‘Delta’ Variant  Los Angeles County reported 239 new cases of COVID-19 and three additional deaths on Sunday, June 27, though the number of cases and deaths likely reflect reporting delays over the weekend. Sunday’s figures brought the county’s totals to 1,249,304 cases and 24,477 fatalities since the pandemic began, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said. According to state figures, there were 238 people hospitalized in the county due to COVID-19 as of Sunday, up from 231 on Saturday. There were 52 COVID patients in intensive care, down from 55 the previous day. (6/27)
Orange County Register: Disneyland Brings Back Single Rider Lines For Most Popular Attractions  Disneyland and Disney California Adventure have brought back single rider lines on some of the most popular rides for the first time since the Anaheim theme parks reopened. Single rider lines returned today, June 26 at Disneyland and DCA. State guidelines discouraged the use of single-rider lines when theme parks initially reopened starting April 1  because they were “likely inconsistent with physical distancing,” but capacity limits and social distancing requirements were lifted June 15. (MacDonald, 6/26)
San Francisco Chronicle: Coronavirus: Timeline Of The COVID-19 Outbreak Across The Bay Area, California, U.S. The Chronicle began covering the coronavirus crisis before the first cases were reported in the Bay Area and a pandemic was declared in 2020. We reorganized the newsroom to dedicate nearly every resource toward stories focusing on the health and economic disasters. Every day we have published live updates to reflect the most critical local, national and global updates on COVID-19 in an effort to keep our community safe and informed. Below is a comprehensive timeline of The Chronicle’s live updates coverage of the coronavirus outbreak, which includes thousands of news items as they happened. (6/27)
San Francisco Chronicle: Where Are Drugs To Beat COVID – And The Next Pandemic? Even with powerful vaccines in hand and the coronavirus waning across most of the United States, there’s still an urgent need for drugs to treat COVID-19 — and that could lay the foundation for the next generation of therapies for pandemics, say Bay Area scientists conducting such research. Drug therapies were an early focus in the pandemic, when it wasn’t clear how long it would take to develop effective vaccines. But while vaccine development has been enormously successful, thanks in large part to the federal government’s $18 billion investment, drug treatments have been disappointingly elusive. (Allday, 6/27)
San Francisco Chronicle: California’s Power Grid May Issue Flex Alert As Scorching Temperatures Hit California Scorching temperatures baking some parts of California may mean that state residents will be asked to voluntarily conserve energy, officials said Sunday. A heat bulletin from the California Independent System Operator said officials might issue a flex alert and ask consumers “to reduce electricity use during critical times of stress on the [power] grid.” (Flores, 6/27)
San Francisco Chronicle: California Far North Residents Told To Be Ready To Flee Fire As Needed The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office alerted people living north of Weed to be prepared to evacuate the area as the Lava Fire grew Sunday to 410 acres. One of four fires started by lightening in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest late last week, the Lava Fire was initially contained but then broke out and began spreading, according to Suzi Johnson, a spokesperson with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. (Dizikes, 6/27)
Sacramento Bee: California ISO Won’t Issue Flex Alert Monday Amid Heat Wave  California’s largest electrical grid operator changed course Sunday after saying it could issue a Flex Alert on Monday, which would have asked residents to voluntarily conserve energy as a heat wave pushes demand on the grid. The California Independent System Operator, which manages about 80% of the state’s energy supply, said in a statement issued Sunday afternoon that it was “poised to call” a Flex Alert on Monday due to high temperatures which have been pushing residential air conditioning units into overdrive this month. (Moleski, 6/27)
CalMatters: A California Town Is Without Running Water Amid Drought  This is how California’s water crisis is going these days: The only functioning well in the rural community of Teviston broke in early June, leaving more than 700 residents without running water as temperatures in the Central Valley soared to triple-digits in a drought. “It’s day to day” for the people of Teviston, said Frank Galaviz, a board member of the Teviston Community Services District, in an interview with The Fresno Bee. (Montalvo, 6/28)
AP: California Budget Boosts Health Care For Older Immigrants California will soon pay the health care bills for low-income people 50 and older who are living in the country illegally, part of an expansion of Medicaid that aims to inch the nation’s most populous state toward Democrats’ goal of making sure everyone has health insurance. The new coverage will eventually cost taxpayers about $1.3 billion per year, money that’s part of the new state operating budget that Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislative leaders unveiled Friday night. The budget is scheduled for a vote in the state Legislature on Monday, with Newsom likely signing it into law before the state’s fiscal year begins Thursday. (Beam, 6/26)
Sacramento Bee: CA Lawmakers To Vote On Budget With Surplus, Stimulus Checks  California lawmakers plan to pass a 2021 state budget that reflects a partial deal with Newsom on most key issues, including $8 billion in stimulus checks for middle-income Californians and expanded funding for homeless aid. Newsom and lawmakers have not yet announced a final deal on the state budget, but legislative leaders released a summary document Friday that says they’ve reached agreement on most areas, including on expanding coverage to more undocumented immigrants. (Bollag, 6/28)
San Diego Union-Tribune: Palomar Health Signs Doctor Contract  Palomar Health said in a statement Friday that its chief executive officer has signed an emergency department staffing agreement with Emergent Medical Associates and expects to complete two additional agreements early next week. Palomar said that 32 of its 50 staff emergency doctors have signed on with EMA, quite a development given no-confidence votes Wednesday from physician leadership at the health system’s hospitals in Escondido and Poway. (Sisson, 6/25)
Daily Breeze/Orange County Register: How This Mobile Healthcare Unit Represents The Last Mile Of The Coronavirus Pandemic  As vice president of operations for a shipping company in Valencia, Marco Pelaez did everything he could to keep his employees safe during the coronavirus pandemic, from mandatory testing, social distancing, issuing personal protective gear and allowing employees to take time off for even the slightest illness. But when it came time to get vaccinated, many of the 400 employees at AMS Fulfillment were resistant for various reasons, Pelaez said. (Rosenfeld, 6/27)
The Santa Rosa Press Democrat: Healdsburg Nonprofit Doubles Down On Health Equity Vaccination clinics. Mental health awareness. Care for the unhoused. Grants for grassroots groups. In Healdsburg, one nonprofit has spent the better part of the COVID-19 pandemic managing all these important programs. The nonprofit, the 20-year-old Healthcare Foundation of Northern Sonoma County, now finds itself at the center of a series of collaborations with health care providers all over the north county — partnerships that are having major impacts on county residents who need services most. (Villano, 6/26)
KQED: There’s Only 1 Drug For Postpartum Depression. Why Does Kaiser Permanente Make It So Hard To Get?  When Miriam McDonald decided she wanted to have another baby at age 44, her doctor told her she had a better chance of winning the lottery. So when she got pregnant, she and her husband were thrilled. But within three days of giving birth to their son, everything turned. As the weeks went by, her depression got worse. She felt sad, but also indifferent. She didn’t want to hold her baby, she didn’t want to change him. She said she felt no connection with him at all. (Dembosky, 6/28)
Los Angeles Times: California Governor Candidate John Cox’s Homelessness Plan  Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox is revealing his plan to reduce homelessness as he launches a statewide bus tour Monday in Los Angeles. Unlike his last major media effort, this one won’t feature a 1,000-pound Kodiak bear; rather, Cox plans to bring along an 8-foot ball of garbage as he lays out how he would cut homelessness in half over the next decade. (Mehta, 6/27)

The historian and biographer Alex Danchev, who has died aged 60 from a heart attack, believed that it was artists rather than politicians who had the power to change society.
Danchev made his name as a military historian, with acclaimed biographies of Oliver Franks (1993) and Basil Liddell Hart (1998), and a co-edition of the unexpurgated war diaries of Lord Alanbrooke (2001). More recently, artists had become his focus, although he continued to write about contemporary politics, notably Anglo-American relations and the so-called war on terror. A life of Georges Braque (2005) – the first ever to be published – was succeeded by a life of Braque’s “god”, Paul Cézanne (2012), and Danchev’s meticulous and tone-perfect new translation of Cézanne’s letters (2013) – letters which had formed the backbone of his subtly revisionist interpretation of the artist’s character and behaviour.
An anthology of 100 artists’ manifestos published between 1909 and 2009, including those by Boccioni, Malevich, Barnett Newman and Gilbert and George, came out in 2011. In all these well-received books – and his many essays on contemporary painters, photographers and film-makers – Danchev deployed to brilliant effect his knowledge of the literary culture that helped to form his subjects’ work and thinking. He also wrote beautifully about the visual qualities of the art.
His biography of René Magritte – a painter for whom poetry and philosophy were prime sources of inspiration – was incomplete at the time of his death.
If this mixture of military history, philosophy, poetry and avant-garde art seems eccentric, for Danchev the interrelationships were essential. As he put it in the introduction to On Art and War and Terror (2009), “Armed with art … we are more alert and less deceived.” Artists (in the broadest sense of the term) being exceptionally acute “witnesses” of their times must, he argued, be taken seriously as thinkers and moral agents; their works have political and ethical force. Seamus Heaney’s statement, “The imaginative transformation of human life is the means by which we can most truly grasp and comprehend it” was, he said, his credo.
In the essay on Anselm Kiefer published in On Good and Evil and the Grey Zone (2016), Danchev expressed this controlling insight in characteristically pungent style: “Contrary to popular belief, it is given to artists, not politicians, to create a new world order.”
Alex Danchev was born in Bolton, Lancashire. His father, Alfons Danchev, was a mining engineer of Belgian and Bulgarian parentage who moved to London to complete his training in 1939 and, having worked for the BBC World Service during the second world war, became a British citizen in 1947. His mother, Anne Gilman, worked in the fashion industry. This background no doubt contributed to Alex’s dislike of conventional boundaries and eventually to the impassioned opposition to binary thinking (“us and them; black and white; good and evil; civilisation and barbarism”) expressed in the essays gathered in On Art and War and Terror, and On Good and Evil and the Grey Zone.
A first-class degree in history and economics at University College, Oxford (1977), and a postgraduate teacher-training certificate at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, were Danchev’s passport to Sandhurst in 1978 and the start of a decade as an officer in the Royal Army Education Corps. Meanwhile, he completed a PhD in war studies at King’s College London (1984). A research fellowship at King’s in 1988-89 spelled the end of his army career and led to a lectureship in international relations at Keele University, with promotion to professor and head of the department in 1992.
From Keele, he moved in 2004 to the school of politics and international relations at Nottingham University, and from there, finally, to St Andrews University in 2014. Successive high-profile visiting fellowships at Queen Mary University of London and St Antony’s College, Oxford (2008-10), reflected the esteem in which his work was held.
Danchev’s energy was phenomenal: his commitment to teaching, for which he won several awards, remained intense despite his stream of publications, arduous administrative duties and membership of august editorial boards.
Somehow, he also found time to review regularly for the Times Higher Education and Literary Supplements, the London Review of Books and the Guardian. Reviewing sometimes triggered a major new project. Thus an exuberant response in the THE to the Magritte exhibition at Tate Liverpool in 2011 – “My advice: jump on a train to Liverpool and marvel afresh at all the things there are to marvel at” – was the catalyst for his unfinished biography of the artist.
Among the qualities that made him so original and stimulating a historian of 20th-century and contemporary politics and art was his imaginative and creative response to an exceptionally wide range of cultural material. Typically, he prefaced his essays with quotations from thinkers and writers that proved to be perfectly apt, but that belonged to a period or milieu seemingly different from that of the subject in hand. Thus a sharply worded assessment of Tony Blair’s role in the Iraq war was introduced by Aristotle’s Ethics.
Montaigne, Proust, Nietzsche, Kafka, Rilke and Beckett were among favourite points of reference, but the chorus of voices was neither stable nor predictable: it was always expanding to admit discoveries or rediscoveries. So, following a characteristic pattern, Danchev’s research on Magritte led to his delighted discovery of the underrated Belgian Surrealist poet Paul Nougé, who duly joined the select company worthy of quotation in an epigraph.
Thinking laterally was one of Danchev’s fortes and the mot juste another, for the dazzling erudition never came with the heavy hand of the pedant, but with the striking turn of phrase of the enthusiast keen to share with his readers the joys and revelations afforded by the books that had marked him.
In his life and in his work Danchev was sustained by his partnership with the psychologist Dee Cooper, whom he married in 1998 and who, he said, immeasurably deepened his understanding of the complexities of human nature.
A devotee of jazz, he relished good company and the good things of life, while not seeking to conceal his streak of moral earnestness. He is survived by Dee, his step-daughters, Sarah and Jemma, and his step-grandchildren, Alexander and Isabella.

Between Paul and Jesus Christ

Between Paul and Jesus Christ
By Laurence B. Brown, MD
Many authors have pointed out the disparity in the teachings of Paul and Jesus; the best of them have avoided opinionated commentary and concentrated on simply exposing the elements of difference.
In the midst of the growing 19th and 20th-century awareness of the differences between Trinitarian doctrine and the period of origins, a person might be surprised to find one group who claim to be followers of Christ Jesus reading the following in the Noble Qur’an:
“O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: nor say of God anything but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a Messenger of God, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in God and His Messengers. Do not say “Trinity”: desist: it will be better for you: for God is One God: glory be to Him: (far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs” (Al-Nisa’ 4:171)
And warning:
“O People of the Book! Exceed not in your religion the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by – who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even Way.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:77)
One may wonder what, from the New Testament, separates these two groups by such a vast expanse of understanding. No doubt the key difference which divides Trinitarians from Unitarians, and Christians from Muslims, is Pauline theology. For centuries the argument has been put forth that Trinitarian Christians largely follow Pauline theology more than that of Jesus. This charge is difficult to deny, for Jesus taught the Law of the Old Testament, whereas Paul preached mysteries of faith, in denial of the Law which the prophets had suffered and struggled to convey. In disrespect to thousands of years of revelation conveyed through a long chain of esteemed prophets, and contrary to the teachings of the rabbi Jesus himself, Paul focused not on the life and teachings of Jesus, but upon his death. As Lehmann put it:
“The only thing which Paul considers important is the Jew Jesus’ death, which destroyed all hopes of liberation by a Messiah. He makes the victorious Christ out of the failed Jewish Messiah, the living out of the dead, the son of God out of the son of man.”[1]
More than a few scholars consider Paul the main corrupter of Apostolic Christianity and of the teachings of Jesus:
“What Paul proclaimed as ‘Christianity’ was sheer heresy which could not be based on the Jewish or Essene faith, or on the teaching of Rabbi Jesus. But, as Schonfield says, ‘The Pauline heresy became the foundation of Christian orthodoxy and the legitimate church was disowned as heretical.’”[2]
Lehmann continues:
“Paul did something that Rabbi Jesus never did and refused to do. He extended God’s promise of salvation to the Gentiles; he abolished the law of Moses, and he prevented direct access to God by introducing an intermediary.”[3]
Others elevate Paul to sainthood. Joel Carmichael, who commented as follows, very clearly is not one of them:
“We are a universe away from Jesus. If Jesus came “only to fulfill” the Law and the Prophets; If he thought that “not an iota, not a dot” would “pass from the Law,” that the cardinal commandment was “Hear, O Israel, the Lord Our God, the Lord is one,” and that “no one was good but God”….What would he have thought of Paul’s handiwork! Paul’s triumph meant the final obliteration of the historic Jesus; he comes to us embalmed in Christianity like a fly in amber.”[4]
Many authors have pointed out the disparity in the teachings of Paul and Jesus; the best of them have avoided opinionated commentary and concentrated on simply exposing the elements of difference. Dr. Wrede comments:
“In Paul the central point is a divine act, in history but transcending history, or a complex of such acts, which impart to all mankind a ready-made salvation. Whoever believes in these divine acts – the incarnation, death, and resurrection of a celestial being, receives salvation.
“And this, which to Paul is the sum of religion – the skeleton of the fabric of his piety, without which it would collapse – can this be a continuation or a remoulding of the gospel of Jesus? Where, in all this, is that gospel to be found, which Paul is said to have understood?
“Of that which is to Paul all and everything, how much does Jesus know? Nothing whatever.”[5]
And Dr. Johannes Weiss contributes:
“Hence the faith in Christ as held by the primitive churches and by Paul was something new in comparison with the preaching of Jesus; it was a new type of religion.”[6]
Which theology won the day, and why, and how, are questions left to the analyses of the above authors. Should a person come to recognize that the teachings of Paul and those of Jesus oppose one another, consideration should be given to the question: “If I had to choose between the two, to whom should I give priority — Jesus or Paul?” The question is so relevant that Michael Hart had the following to say in his scholastic tome, in which he ranks the 100 most influential men of history:
“Although Jesus was responsible for the main ethical and moral precepts of Christianity (insofar as these differed from Judaism), St. Paul was the main developer of Christian theology, its principal proselytizer, and the author of a large portion of the New Testament.”[7]
With regard to Paul’s perspective:
“He does not ask what led to Jesus’ death, he only sees what it means to him personally. He turns a man who summoned people to reconciliation with God into the savior. He turns an orthodox Jewish movement into a universal religion which ultimately clashed with Judaism.”[8]
The three main points where Pauline theology conflicts with that of Jesus are critical — elements so crucial that deviation from the truth threatens a person’s salvation. In order of importance they rank:
1) The divinity of Jesus alleged by Pauline theology versus the oneness of God taught by Christ Jesus;
2) Justification by faith, as proposed by Paul, versus Old Testament law, as endorsed by Christ Jesus;
3) Jesus having been a universal prophet, as per Paul, versus an ethnic prophet, as per the teachings of Christ Jesus.[9] Interestingly enough, these three points constitute the greatest doctrinal differences separating Christianity not only from Judaism, but also from Islam. Running a theological finger down the backbone of revealed monotheism, Trinitarian Christianity seems to stand out of joint.
To address the first of these points, Jesus is recorded as having taught the oneness of God, as in Mark 12:29:
“Jesus answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” Jesus reportedly continued with “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength,” finishing with emphasis upon the initial claim, “This is the first commandment.” (Mark 12:30). Not only did Jesus stress importance by sandwiching his statement between the repeated and emphatic “This is the first commandment,” but the importance of this teaching is equally stressed in Matthew 22:37 and Luke 10:27, and further complemented by the first commandment as recorded in Exodus 20:3 — “You shall have no other gods before Me.” Jesus conveyed the above teaching from Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (as acknowledged in all reputable Biblical commentaries), yet Pauline theology somehow arrived at concepts which have been extrapolated to support what is now known as the Trinity. One wonders how. Jesus referred to the Old Testament — what did the Pauline theologians refer to? Significantly absent from the above teaching of Jesus is the association of himself with God. There never was a better time or place, throughout the New Testament, for Jesus to have claimed partnership in divinity, were it true. But he didn’t. He didn’t say, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one — but it’s not quite that simple, so let me explain…”

[9] Christ Jesus was one more prophet in the long line of prophets sent to guide the astray Israelites. As Christ Jesus so clearly affirmed, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24) When Jesus sent the disciples out in the path of God, he instructed them in such a manner as to leave no uncertainty in this regard, for he told them, “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 10:5-6) Throughout his ministry, Jesus was never recorded as having converted a single Gentile, and in fact is recorded as having initially rebuked a Gentile for seeking his favors, likening her to a dog (Matthew 15:22-28 and Mark 7:25-30). One wonders, what does that mean now, for those who have taken Jesus to be their ‘personal savior’ and presume to speak in his name?
