Karlach has a closer relation to Zariel than just of her Tiefling descent. Born and raised in the thick of the Blood Wars, she knows next to nothing but War. A willing aid to Zariel, she was tasked with handling the deals between her and a mortal called Gortash. This was Karlach's first tastes of Faerûn. She could certainly see the appeal, and the potential...
Zariel reveals that due to Karlach's low rank as a Cambion, she is not strong enough to go any further and planned to enforce the engine upon her. However, upon Karlach finding out about the blueprints and the countless already dead by the failed experimentation - she willingly undergoes the surgery.
Surviving, and thriving, she continues her campaign. Upon the sudden arrival of a Mindflayer ship, she climbs aboard in order to save fellow cambions under her command. But in the attempt she is outmatched by enemies she hasn't fought before and ambushed, later infected.
Waking up after the crash, she finds whatever these creatures did to her had reduced her to her Tiefling appearance, rather than her true cambion self (think like Raphael and his disguise). A lot of her strength sapped away, but her engine still roaring away. Wanting rid of this brain bug so she could return to Avernus unhindered, she ends up coming across a group of surface dwellers suffering the same affliction.
At some point she will gain enough strength back to access her full Cambion form once more. Probably around Act 3.
This version of Karlach is more keen on seeking out power and strength. Much like cambions usually are, she's happy to make deals and promises that lean in her favour. She will appear friendly, approachable (much like the usual Karlach) but always has some form of intention behind every conversation. Spending more time in Faerûn exposes her to a lot that she simply didn't see in Avernus. Sticking with this rag-tag group means she could take on a 'God'...which would surely show off her prowess to Zariel.
Fun Notes:
- Raphael and Mizora would have special interactions with her. It's these conversations that would slowly reveal she is really a cambion, not just a Tiefling.
- She will not kill Wyll, despite him being more likely to figure out who she is, due to the pact he has with Mizora. Wanting to stay on her good side, and to act as messenger for Zariel.
- This Karlach is drawn to power, and would happily convince those around her to take what is 'owed' to them. Whispering her opinions, looking to seek favours from those in powerful positions now she's helped them get there.
- She deals in Soul Coins, and uses them in abundance.
- Dammon would know who she is. Fears her. She'd insist on upgrades to keep her in Faerûn to see this mission through, but not to reduce the flame.
- Karlach is uncaring about killing Gortash. Whatever they need to get through this. They don't have a pact, so who cares? She does however take an express interest in the Foundry, hoping to take the changes Gortash made back to Avernus.
- She is always going to return to Avernus. But she insists that she will get the engine modified so it is completely under her control. She'll be back to get her end of the deal, don't you worry about that...
