so much respect to people who prefer AUs where their favorite characters get to live and be happy, but my thing with tragic characters is that their tragedies are so painful and compelling because they are inevitable… and so, for me, to undo these characters’ endings, to rob them of their cathersis, is to rob them of themselves.
#like. this has a lot to do with seeing characters as people vs. seeing them as tools of the narrative#and also just my general preference for canon compliance#i think it’s true of every single character i’m REALLY invested in that i wouldn’t care about them half as much (if at all) were it not for#their tragic endings#i’m sad about it - yeah - but that doesn’t mean i don’t want it to happen#my pain over tragic characters is enjoyable to me - i have no desire to lessen it#it’s just a very different relationship than one would have to any real person - like a friend for instance#when you hear about a real friend experiencing real suffering in the real world - then you obviously want that to stop#you want them to be happy… you wish you could whisk them away to a place where they could be happy#and i think some people extend that thinking to tragic characters as well#which is FINE - obviously - i’m not shaming anyone here!!#i just have a different perspective on the matter#and like. for most of the characters i like - there simply IS no good ending!#you’d have to go back decades or even to childhood or even to BIRTH#and why would i want to do any of that when they’re all perfect exactly as they are?#perfectly made for their perfect tragedies#that’s my thoughts on the matter anyway!#inspired by my physically recoiling at the idea of certain characters getting a ‘happy ending’#because what the hell does that even MEAN under those circumstances - ya know?#some characters were just not built to be happy#and that’s OKAY
