I was talking with a friend today about depression because we both live with it. I gave him this analogy I made up a few years back, and it helped him reframe it. I hope it helps other people, too.
I used this analogy to help my friends who stuck with me during my really bad episode a couple years back so they could understand what was happening inside my head.
In the throes of my depression, it felt like there was screaming/chanting in my head. I couldn't turn it off, and I couldn't drown it out. I call them tracks. They're like shitty "songs" of awful things that people have told me, or made me feel like and it all got put onto a record and was playing. On loop. The record player was locked away and I couldn't get to it, I couldn't turn it off, and I couldn't lower it. It just played and played and played.
Being friends with people who have a mental illness can be hard, but if you are and help them through their episodes, you deserve an award. Mental illness isn't always easy to understand when you don't have one, but just being there is always nice. My favorite podcaster posted this picture, and I think it's great. I reference it a lot because sometimes the best help/love/comfort is just having someone be with you. @inkpug

Out Of Nowhere by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2020. 9781534481008. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781534481008?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Beetle has a friend, a red caterpillar. They used to have picnics on a big rock that looked out over the forest. But then the caterpillar disappeared (into its cocoon under the rock, but Beetle didn't know that), so Beetle went into the forest to find its friend. Spoiler: when they're reunited, Beetle's friend looks a bit different.
This is my wife's favorite picture book of the lot. Her comment: "So beautiful!" The illustrations are dark and exquisite with just a bit of red, and the friends' body language and eyes express so much.
The Worst Poet Ever by Lauren Stohler. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2020. 9781534446281. @inkpug http://www.powells.com/book/-9781534446281?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Cat and Pug write poetry; Cat with a quill and Pug using a typewriter. Cat's poems have a classic feel. Pug's don't -- he writes poems about (and while typing with) different body parts. Which doesn't mean Cat's poems aren't fun, too. It turns into a bit of poetry fight, and then into something even better when they collaborate. The illustrations are really fun, and this is another of those comics-in-disguise picture books that uses word balloons and borderless panels perfectly.
The Run by Barroux. Aladdin, 2020. 9781534408869. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781534408869?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Stylized, simple animals run to the across forests, savannas, swamps, ice, fields, deserts, et al while an unseen narrator tries to get their attention and figure out what is going on. Turns out the reason they'r running is related to what the kid who's reading the book (and narrating it) is doing which (hint) may make this a fun book to read to a kid who's potty training. Barroux's art looks like he draws with black ink on top of paints, which makes all of the animals charming.

Hey sorry it’s me again. Love the comic btw :D
But I do have a question. OKAY so I always wanted to start a blog like this for at least 3 to 4 years now and I have tried but I have one problem... I’m a paper artist and I’m nervous if people even like paper art anymore. Is it still considered a comic/art blog if it is not done in digital, just paper? Or should I get some digital things? Sorry if this is long :’’)
An art blog, yeah? Of course people are still into traditional art! I’m willing to bet you’ve probably come across a lot of traditional art blogs and didn’t even know it. Here are a few that do traditional or do both traditional and digital that I follow:
@raccooncomic / @simkaye - Just, gorgeous. Also, I love racoons. Also on twitter. I also just realized I’m not following their other blog on Tumblr...I need to fix that.
@laveerie - Laveerie’s not active on Tumblr but on Instagram!
@inkpug - I’m very sure it’s mostly traditional.
@extrafabulouscomics or (extrafabulous on twitter) - hehehehehehe. Ahem. I see a lot of his stuff start on paper and some are polished off digitally.
@obligatorymorningfart (joeobligations on twitter) - I can’t express to you how much I love this artist.
@frejs-froggy-artblog (frejann_senpai on twitter) - Lots of awesome watercolor and ink stuff here and there!
I also follow a handful of Disney concept art blogs. Some of them feature traditional concept art, which are just lovely.
A fair amount are mostly active on other sites like Twitter. As much as I’d love to use Twitter, the majority of my following is here and I am thus tied to this...this site (my twitter is @ heavenly96_art, by the way). Any who! All of my old Inktober drawings were, of course, traditional. I’m not a traditional artist, so I can’t really speak of the process. I imagine it’s just a matter of having a good way of capturing the drawing, either by camera or a scanner (which is what I’ve used). In a pinch, there’s camscanner, which can be used on a phone.
