and you never know!! i'm sure more people will be inspired to write terzo long fics as the fandom grows and changes. and even though i'm not a terzo girlie i do have one idea for a terzo fic that might well spiral into a very long story at some point (which is exactly why i have not touched it yet haha). AND also, the vampire terzo story for the friday nights series will 100% get long as well as it's the one that will conclude the series! maybe not IKNBS long but i hope it will give you some of the same feelings ♡

Theory/Headcanon - A Splatoon 1 dialogue for Kelp Dome is often cited as proof that vegetables as a whole didn't exist 100 years prior to to the events of Splatoon.

Well, that's a bit unbelievable, at least as it appears to it's face. Even disregarding all the other sentient species of Splatoon and applying this only to Inklings, it's a stretch that such a diet shift could take place in only 100 years. Callie also doesn't say that Inklings didn't eat vegetables, she says they straight up didn't exist. Crops don't appear out of thin air, they take hundreds and hundreds of not thousands of years of cultivation... so what IS going on here?

Well, the Japanese dialogue opens up a little more ground here:

That makes a bit more sense. Rather than saying vegetables as a whole, Callie says "tomatoes and such", perhaps implying an explosion in crop development rather than a total diet shift. Still, like I said, crops don't appear from thin air... so what happened?

Lets take a gander at some of the art books.

These are all examples of crops said to be either grown in Kelp Dome or sold in Mako Mart, and with the exception of the Napa Cabbage, ALL of these crops don't look exactly like the ones we know in real life. Most have cosmetic differences immediately recognisable as Inkling inspired, such as the spotted colour gradient of the bananas, the squid arrow pattern on the watermelon, or the diamond shaped leaves of the corn.

Well uh. That's not normal. Yes, I know this is Splatoon, and saying that is kinda redundant, but these strike me as something like novelty genetically modified crops... and I think that's pretty close to what I think is going on here.

Sudden crop development, genetic modification, all based on crops we in real life are familiar with... I theorise that at some point during or just after the Great Turf War, a human seed bank was discovered. Built to preserve a huge range of primarily crops should the worst happen, this facility opened huge new possibilities as society started to pick themselves back up after the war.

That said, even with automated systems that kept going for a long while after the end of humanity and things like lead shielding to protect from background radiation, (and giving some grace for splatoon's naturally exaggerated science), its extremely unlikely the seeds would be viable to grow. No, but between the gathered seeds stored, there would likely be enough genetic information to start to engineer crops based on these ancient seeds, with gaps filled in with genes from already existing crops and plants.

(Real cephalopods have extremely funky genomes that defy a lot of standard models of genetic inheritance, instead turning genes on and off via complicated processes. I see this fact contributing to a relatively lax attitude to gene modification among Inkbeings once DNA is understood.)

...So where the Octarians could put this technology and attitude to practice by engineering the various trooper types, and perhaps crops of their own they can grow in the stilted conditions of the domes, the Inklings instead apply their knowledge to making weird watermelons and such with squid patterns, because that's just how they roll apparently.

Seeing people talking about Inkb|ot on my dash again and I want to remind everyone that they changed their ToS early this month to "clarify" that they consider consensual nonconsent to be rape; any illustration of such will be removed from the site. They literally use the phrase "consensual nonconsent," thereby making it explicitly clear that they know this is a consensual act, but they have decided that it's still actually rape and therefore cannot be allowed on their platform.

Regardless of anyone's feelings on the kink in question, they literally declare an act of consensual sex to be "glorification of sexual violence" in their content guidelines. While claiming to be kink-positive and adult-friendly on social media.

The content guidelines for Inkb|ot have been moving by inches over the last year or so, cutting out more and more adult content, in spite of the platform still being marketed as an adult-friendly art platform.

There's actually more to it than this, even setting aside the anti-kink bias at play here: on Inkb|ot, you cannot refer to the Holocaust or similar events in illustrated work, "even in a historical context," because the content guidelines declare that any reference to a hateful act counts as endorsement of the group responsible.

This is not an intent to leverage hate at any of the devs on the platform—it's their platform and they can do what they want. But they are literally selling their project as an adult-friendly art platform, a place where adult creatives can express themselves freely, and that is 1000% not the case. I don't care about their delicate sensibilities, I care that they're openly lying about what their platform is and who it's for. (And I'm saying this as someone who backed the Kickstarter and supported them on Patreon for quite a while.)

I've seen people referring to it as "the upcoming AO3 of art" and that could not be further from the truth. It is not an adult-friendly platform. It is not a kink-positive platform. It is a platform built to guidelines set almost entirely by the personal prejudices and preferences of the dev team, intentionally excluding a huge portion of the human experience while touting itself as some paradise for adult creatives.

My suggestion? Don't fucking bother.
