Musings on Custodes: Talons Apart
Is there a rift between the Adeptus Custodes and the Sisters of Silence? There must be, right?
If Custodes have not enough lore, then the Anathema Psykana have next to none. They are played up as the almost-as-important-as-Custodes-no-seriously-trust-us in that charming GW way, but most of their lore so far fits on a single codex page.
The second talon of the Emperor, the Pale Scourge, the Null Maidens - they are depicted as ferocious and as loyal to the Emperor as Custodians themselves, but where the latter have their whole "literally built around the Emperor's identity" thing, the Sisterhood somehow arrives to the same level of devotion by more conventional means. And here I would have loved to present my examples of how their brand of fixation on the Emperor differs from that of Custodians or the other all-female warrior sorority... IF I HAD ANY! I'd say their relationship with the Emperor and their duty deserves its own separate post, but that would be straight up just me coming up with headcanons for them (which I might still do). When it comes to any sort of meaningful worldbuilding that is not just rank structure and training regime - yeah, the girls got no lore, or, rather, no theme.
By themselves, that is. As a part of the Talons of the Emperor however...
Well, no, no real thematic depth materializes for them once they are placed next to the golden demigods, but the two factions do make an effective pair - dread and awe, silver and gold, the natural and the artificial evolutions of humanity, psychic and physical armour of the Emperor. Some sources say that the Sisters first appeared at the Emperor's side during the Great Crusade, but others insist that when he made his Custodians ages before, he made them specifically resistant to the powers of the null... So there is chance that the two factions were straight up designed to compliment each other and work together, which they did well... until they didn't.
Because in the current state of the lore, it seems that they haven't actually been working together between the Horus Heresy and the Era Indomitus.
The Anathema Psykana came out of the other end of the Horus Heresy in no better state than Custodes. Once again - all the numbers are very vague and we don't even really know how many of them there were to begin with and yada-yada - what's important is that the end of the Siege of Terra left the Sisterhood in shambles. But unlike Custodes - and here we come to one of the few pieces of interesting worldbuilding that sisters do have - they never had the opportunity to recover. By the time Guilliman rolls up to Terra in "present day" 40k, the Sisterhood is still a shadow of its former self, its members extremely few and scattered.
So what happened? Well, the codex states the following: "Without the Emperor to support them, and with Custodians looking inward after their failure to protect the Master of Mankind, the natural aversion many felt towards Blanks led the Sister's political enemies to drive them out of positions of influence." And isn't that a whole story in disguise? After the Heresy, the Sisters came into conflict with other imperial institutions - a conflict they did not win - and Custodes did nothing to intervene. Surely such a breaking of bonds of fellowship has consequences?
Custodes were obviously deeply affected by the "death" of the Emperor. They blamed themselves for it - hence the black cloaks and ten thousand years of moping around. They blamed the primarchs - Guilliman rises as the last loyal son of the Emperor and receives direct divine guidance from his father, and they still run drills on how to kill him. They blamed the Astartes - the Phalanx, hanging above Terra as its most devout defender, is infested by the Custodians ready to bring it down at the first sign of treachery. Did they blame the Sisters too, then? Did they knowingly abandon their counterparts to the judgment of degrading Imperium, seeing it as a fitting punishment for a failure of duty? Have they preserved this sentiment across the millenia? Or did they come to realize their betrayal for what it was? If so, why have they never sought the remaining Sisters out? Or have they? When they encountered the Brides of the Emperor thousands of years later - did it stir something in them? Was Captain-General reaching out to them not solely about the solution to the Van Dire crisis?
It is specifically pointed out that high Custodes casualties in the battle against Khorne's demons at the Lion's Gate were caused by the absence of the Sisters of Silence at their side. Did they re-embrace the ancient partnership out of purely practical necessity, or was it a true rekindling of bonds? Could it even be such for those custodians who began their vigil after the demigods and the blanks have parted ways?
And what is the Sisters' side of the story? The lore that we have is pretty clear on the fact that, despite being abandoned by their allies and shunned by the Imperium's caracss, they never shirked their duties. Left without any official support and recognition of their status, persecuted and sometimes downright hunted - Space Marine legions have rebelled for less. And yet, as reduced as the Sisterhood became, for ten millenia Black Ships somehow still prowled the stars, and the sacrifices to the Carrion God were still being delivered. Did they feel betrayed? By the Imperium they served and partners they fought alongside? And what carried them through? Was it all solemn duty and grim determination? For how many generations could those last you? And what can motivate an organization for ten thousand years instead?
How strong is their institutional memory? Are the annals of their order's history lost to the Sisters of the Era Indomitus, like it is with so many other - much better supported - imperial institutions? Do they know about the rift between their forebears and the Ten Thousand? Do they carry resentment towards the Custodians? Do they know why?
And now that the Talons bite together again - do they do so earnestly, the synergy woven into the very structure of both orders restored? Or is there an unspoken divide between them still? Was there any sort of official reconciliation? Do either feel a need for one? And after ten thousand years of potential bitterness and resentment - is it even possible?

^^^^^
“You remember my first boyfriend, right?” I asked Damian over comms while I was out on patrol and in the middle of taking down a group of drug-dealers. “He came to the house a couple times.”
Damian and I were on a private comms channel. We could hear everyone on the open channel all talking to each other in case they needed us, but they couldn’t hear us. Damian was still in bed, but allowed to talk to us on comms. Dick was just subbing as Batman for the night—and the nights that Damian had been out with the League.
“Tt. Yes,” he said. “He didn’t deserve you.”
“Play nice. We were sixteen,” I joked, kicking a dealer in the face and using the momentum to take another one down. “Do you wanna know what became of him?”
“He was arrested and incarcerated for domestic violence three years ago,” Damian said.
“That’s right. Wait. Did you keep tabs on my ex?” I demanded with a laugh.
“Not particularly. Grayson was the one who arrested him. We all realized who he was, and it was all Todd could do not to shoot him. Did he ever treat you that way?”
I scoffed. “Like he could,” I said. “The night we broke up, he tried to smack me when I said something he didn’t like. I caught his wrist and jabbed him in the solar plexus. I hadn’t even begun training with Batman yet—just the martial arts I’d done growing up.” I finished taking down the dealers, tied them up, and left them on the curb after signaling for the cops to come find them. I shot a grappling line up and zipped away.
“Good,” Damian muttered darkly. “If he ever laid a hand on you that you did not permit, I would break every one of his fingers while staring him in the face.”
“You’ve been quiet for a while, Cloudy,” Jason said. “You doing okay?”
I switched to the open channel. “Yeah Hood. Just talking with Batman.”
“Ooh. About what?”
“My first boyfriend.”
“Interesting choice of topic,” Tim remarked. “Is it at all relevant to patrol?”
“Not exactly. One of the drug-dealers I just took down looked a bit like him,” I said. “Made me think of him.”
“Huh,” Jason said. “Well, by all means, keep chatting. I won’t keep you. Holler if you need anything.”
“Will do,” I said before switching back to the private channel. “Still there, Batman?”
“Still here,” Damian said.
“You doing okay?”
“If by that you mean, ‘do I wish I was out there with you’ the answer is yes,” Damian said.
I sighed as I landed against the side of a building and looked out over Gotham. “Of course it is,” I said. “But you’ll be out with us tomorrow so be patient. We’ll be home soon.”
“What if…” Damian began hesitantly. “What if you came home early? That way I’d have some company that isn’t overbearing and loud for a while?” I chuckled as I shot another grappling line to another building and dropped off the side of the building I was on.
“You’d rather have me keep you company than Dick? I thought Dick was, like, your favorite person on the planet,” I teased.
Damian snorted. “Tt. Grayson is like a second father to me more than a brother. I’d rather have someone who’s not exactly like family.”
I scoffed. “Wow thanks,” I said sarcastically.
“I meant no offense,” Damian said.
“I know. I'm just messing around—whoa!” I released my grappling line as the GCPD helicopter banked around a building and nearly hit me. I dropped several hundred feet before catching myself on another line. I swung to the safety of a nearby rooftop and panicked.
“Are you alright?” Damian demanded.
“Yeah,” I said breathlessly. “Just about turned into a bug on the windshield of a helicopter but I'm just fine.”
“Team, Cloudburst just had a run-in with a helicopter. I'm ordering her back to base,” Damian said in the open channel. I switched over to the channel too.
“Whoa! You okay Cloudy?” Dick asked.
“Yeah. Little shaken but I'm good,” I said.
“Head home, Cloudburst. We got this,” Tim said. “Tonight’s not the slowest of nights but it ain’t the fastest either. I think we’ll be good.”
Panting, I slowly walked back to the edge of the roof. “Okay. I’ll see y’all back at base.”
“‘Night Cloudy,” Jason said.
“Night,” I replied. I jumped off the roof and went swinging towards Uptown Gotham, the Palisades, and Wayne Manor outside the city.
^^^^^
“Ho!” I sighed, flopping onto my bed, all showered and in my pajamas.
“Evening,” a voice said from my doorway. I jumped and whirled to see Damian leaned against the doorframe. In his pajamas. Which included an obvious lack of a shirt.
“Damian! You scared me. Shouldn’t you be in bed?”
Damian rolled his eyes. “Tt. I appreciate Pennyworth looking after my health but I don’t require thirty-six-hours of bedrest.”
“Don’t let him hear you say that or he’ll up your sentence to seventy-two hours out of sheer spite.”
“Fair point,” he said with a smile. He crossed my room and perched on the edge of my bed, regarding me calmly. “Perhaps I’ll just hide in here then.”
I snickered. “Trust me, if Alfred suspects you’re disobeying bedrest this is the first place he’d come looking,” I teased. Damian pondered for a moment. I got up and threw a blanket over him. “But now you can pretend you’re resting with me.” His grin grew wider when he freed his head from under the blanket.
“Clever solution,” he complimented.
I brought my laptop onto my bed and opened it up. “Okay,” I said. “Let’s see what gossip we can dig up from the last couple years that you can explain to me.” I logged into Facebook and started scrolling through the “Mutual Friends” list between me and Damian.
Upon scrolling and clicking, I found Barbara Gordon.
Knock-knock! Knuckles echoed off my door.
Damian was instantly on his feet and blending into the shadows of my closet. “Alfred?” I asked loudly.
“No, kid,” Bruce’s voice said. “It’s me.”
“C’mon in,” I said.
Bruce opened the door and stepped over the threshold. “How was patrol?” he asked.
“Fine. Got a little spooked when I almost went splat on the GCPD’s helicopter windshield so I turned in early,” I said.
“How are you adjusting to the future?”
“Better than I ever would have thought.”
“Remember what I said to you when you turned eighteen?” Bruce asked.
I licked my lip and bit it, nodding.
^^^^^
“Happy Birthday, Nora,” Bruce said quietly after the party was over and the rest of the family was getting ready for patrol—though I was taking the night off since it was my birthday.
“Thanks,” I said, feeling awkward.
“Something you wanna say, kid?”
“I'm eighteen. I'm an adult. So I'm no longer your responsibility.”
“You could put it that way,” Bruce deadpanned.
“So… are you going to kick me out? Let me find my own life?”
“No.”
His flat delivery rubbed me the wrong way. “Why?” I demanded, sharper than I intended. “Because I'm part of your Mission now?”
He scoffed. “No. Because you’re part of my family,” he retorted.
I took a step back in surprise.
“And you’re welcome to call Wayne Manor your home for as long as you like—and whenever you like.”
I threw my arms around him. He awkwardly stood there for a moment, like a tree, until I felt him give me a hug back.
“It’s alright, kid. It’s… it’s going to be fine.”
^^^^^
“Yeah I remember,” I said.
“When you first arrived here, you had to find your place in this family. And now, again. Your little time-travel adventure has put you in a different position in this family. But make no mistake, Nora, you are still part of this family. You’ve been here a month and I… I realize that I haven’t really even… been here for you.”
“Bruce, really, it’s okay. I mean, you’re still Bruce Wayne and you’ve got a lot on your shoulders even without being Batman. And I’ve had the boys to keep an eye on me and help me out. I get it,” I said. “Really. I’ve been adjusting better than I thought.”
Bruce looked thoughtful. “I… I'm glad,” he said. “One more question, though.”
“Okay. Shoot.”
“Why is my son hiding in your closet?”
I couldn’t help but snicker. I could practically read Damian’s mind—he was probably swearing internally. “We thought you were Alfred. Damian came to check on me after I got spooked on patrol but Alfred doesn’t want him out of bed till tomorrow morning,” I explained.
Bruce smiled—actually smiled. “I won’t tell Alfred,” he said, sounding amused. “You can come out now, Damian!”
Damian poked his head out of my closet, my spare blanket still wrapped around his otherwise bare shoulders. “Good evening, Father.”
“Evening,” Bruce said. “You two have grown close since Nora’s arrival here.”
“Yes,” Damian agreed. “It has been easier to… connect given we are the same age now.”
“And since he’s loosened up a bit,” I added.
“Tt. I am not going soft, McCloud,” Damian grumbled.
“Did I say that?” I retorted playfully, grinning. “I didn’t say that.”
Bruce smirked. “I'm glad you two get along even better now,” he said. “I’ll leave you to what you were doing. Goodnight.”
“‘Night Bruce!” I called as he retreated.
“Goodnight, Father,” Damian said.
My bedroom door shut behind my godfather. I bit my lower lip, suddenly feeling slightly awkward at being in a closed room with Damian. I shook my head to clear it and smiled. “Anyway. What were we doing again?” I asked, looking down at my laptop to see Barbara’s Facebook page open.
“Tt. Scrolling through looking for old gossip for me to explain,” Damian said, sitting next to me on my bed.
“Oh right. Yeah. Let’s do that!” I said.
^^^^^
McCloud snoozed on Damian’s shoulder, eyes closed and laptop still open. Damian was awake, distractedly playing with the ends of her hair. She’d drifted off while he’d been explaining all the romantic relationship drama that she had missed between their friends. She’d fallen asleep with a peaceful smile on her face.
He looked down at the top of her head, her soft flyaway hairs tickling his face. He smiled and brushed some of her hair out of her face. He was so in love with her. He wished he could stay like this forever. With her by his side, her head on his shoulder and asleep.
His imagination brought up a fantasy of a day sometime in the future. A daydream of he and McCloud in an apartment of their own somewhere in Gotham—perhaps married, and happily together. They could be in exactly in this position, except his arm could be around her shoulders and holding her close to his side. A wistful grin played at the corners of his lips. Oh how he would like for that to happen.
But she likely didn’t feel the same way. Yes, she had been acting affectionate toward him as of late, but she acted affectionate to just about everyone. That was the way she was.
He sighed and shut her laptop, moving it out of the way so he could gently ease her into her bed and tuck her in. Carefully, he tucked her covers under her chin and folded up the blanket she’d put on his shoulders. He had half a mind to borrow it until morning—the scent of her shampoo and shower gel clung to it and it would give him an excuse if Pennyworth caught him in the corridors—but decided against it. He placed the blanket back in her closet and slipped out of her bedroom.
“Goodnight, my only,” he whispered, standing at her doorframe, casting a longing look over his shoulder at her. Before he could do anything else, he ducked out and stole back to his quarters.

Is the Human Designer Facing Extinction?
In the last few years, machine learning and artificial intelligence have been hitting the headlines often. The technology has been making progress in leaps and bounds. The physical limitations on computational requirements which once hindered the progress of AI are long-gone. Today, we’re actually pondering a different kind of dilemma: Will machine-learning actually surpass human intelligence in the next few years?
Which “skilled” jobs will soon be replaced by artificial intelligence?
Should we put a kill-switch on our intelligent bots, just in case they get too intelligent and we’ll have a Skynet, doomsday scenario?
As machine-learning keeps advancing at a rapid-pace, with the tools and the research being available applied to mainstream applications, we may be at a tipping point, similar to the time when automatons replaced the human in factories.
Which human industries will vanish in the next few years?
Is the human designer facing extinction?
Why has machine-learning advanced so rapidly?
You can blame quite a bit of that on Google. Well, at least, you can blame the good part of it.
The engineers at Google in the last few years have been applying machine-learning techniques to their search and classification problems with fantastic results. Some parts of their core-algorithms have been completely rewritten to use AI and ML with amazing results, such results that the team had never been able to achieve with any other technology.
RankBrain is one of the algorithms used by the Google search-engine team. It is able to understand and extract the core semantics of natural-language queries, something which previously Google had a very difficult time processing.
But, RankBrian is the AI that Google chose to “reveal” to the general public.
Google…keep hinting at machine-learning powering their search results
You can rest-assured, that under the hood, there’s plenty more going on which we don’t know about. The Google Search and Spam team keep hinting at machine-learning powering their search results.
The teams in fact have been so impressed with the results, that they did the unthinkable. They actually open-sourced the technology they are using internally, such that other people could apply the same algorithms in order to solve their own problems—the result was TensorFlow.
TensorFlow and other similar software technologies, and the practically unlimited computational resources available at will, bring us to a stage where there are much fewer limits than we used to have before.
Great minds like Elon Musk are in fact so worried about the advance of AI and ML, and the potential negative repercussions brought about by this, that they are proposing frameworks such that “kill switches” are put in place…just in case the machines get too intelligent.
In a recent example of machines getting too cocky, Facebook intelligent bots developed their own language to communicate.
This may look creepy to many people, but it really doesn’t surprise those in the know—with artificial intelligence algorithms mimicking human intelligence, and being totally goal-oriented and highly efficient—this is bound to happen. The algorithms will evolve to complete their goal in the most efficient way possible and this may include unexpected or surprising means to an end.
But how does this all affect design?
Design is not immune to all this progress. We’ve recently been seeing a move towards automation of design.
I want a real human designer who can, first and foremost, understand the value of my brand
Logo design has been one of the niches which has had free tools around for a while, but the quality you got out of those, left much to be desired.  For example, when it comes to my logos, unless I’m doing a throwaway site, I want a real human designer who can, first and foremost, understand the value of my brand.
I want to be able to speak to somebody who “gets it” and is able to conceptualize a few ideas before we advance to refining and finalizing of a logo and brand.
But there are AI options, such as TailorBrands. These guys have just received a nice round of funding of $4m. Now, if you’re able to secure that kind of money, you might be onto something. At least, VCs are seeing that this certainly has potential.
Our take was that creativity was, in fact, a popular mistake; something that broke the pattern in a way that enough people like. It’s what happens when I give you a perfect classical piece and you decide to destroy the spacing between the notes; if nobody likes what you are doing it’s a mistake, if enough people like it you just created Jazz.
— Yali Saar, CEO of TailorBrands
These AI options follow the same pattern: they ask a few questions about your brand, ask what style of logo you want, and give you a selection of fonts to choose from. Then your logo is generated. Nothing too complex, not very sophisticated, but yeah, it could work. Does it look like it was designed automatically? Not to most people’s eyes—particularly those who are not designers. Could you use it for your website? I’m sure you could. Will I be using one? The jury is still out on that.
The beauty of working with AI
I’m going to go out on a limb and be very controversial here: If a client came up to me, for a website, without a logo, I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to come up with something good looking in a few minutes. Not only that, I can offer them completely different designs and concepts and potentially refine on their selection. I could probably charge quite nicely for offering a logo creating service.
Is it responsible? Is it ethical? Should I be doing it?
The thing is this, until you build a certain reputation, you’ll be hustling to all sorts of clients. The ones which are great, understand design and brand values and are ready to invest. Then there are the ones who just want to get by. You can chose to refuse them (if you have the luxury to do that). Or you can offer them a budget package, which includes a logo design if they’re still starting out. You’re providing them with a complete package, which is surely cheaper than a human designer and won’t burn you out.
But what’s the flip-side to this argument?
Can AI Ever Truly Design for a Brand?
Before we answer this question, I just want to go over a few examples of beautiful logos which you’ve probably seen over and over again.
Ever noticed the arrow between the E and the X?
Amazon carries everything from A to Z, besides the arrow making the logo “smile”
Cisco (San Francisco)…both a Golden Gate representation as well as a digital signal
The cyclist surely embodies the Tour de France
These logos are only a few of the examples which a true logo should look like. It’s not only a pretty design, the logo does symbolize the brand values.
Before a design is conceptualized and given form, the function behind the brand should be fully understood. And this is where AI falls short (so far). While AI is making advances at a rapid pace, the decisions being made are quasi-intelligent. Today’s AI is more a question of fuzzy logic, where designs and decisions are made with incomplete data, rather than true intelligence. It may look like intelligence, and the uses we put it to, will vastly simplify computational problems which might have seemed insurmountable only a few years back. But true intelligence? True understanding of what is being designed? The time when the designer is fired and a bot is “hired”, we’re probably still quite a few years away. Generations maybe.
Because, can an artificially intelligent bot understand the values of your brand? Who knows, someday, maybe. But today? Despite the advanced in the technology, we’re still not at the level of killing-off the human designer.
