Republicans take control of House of Representatives in US midterms

The rest of the Senate races didnt switch parties this year. This includes 16 seats held by Republicans and nine held by Democrats. We still dont know the outcome of the Senate race in Louisiana as it has moved to a run-off that will be decided in December.

The open seat of Sen. David Vitter could now end up Democrat, but it still wont matter for Democrats when it comes to control of the Senate. The two candidates on the Louisiana ballot to fill Vitters open seat are Louisiana state Treasurer John Kennedy and Foster Campbell .

But this wasnt always the case: Up until a few weeks ago, Senate seats in Florida, Arizona, and Ohio were seen as pretty competitive races. The races only began to open up in recent days.

In Florida, Sen. Marco Rubio had a 3.7-point lead over challenger Patrick Murphy heading into Election Day. And in the other two states, incumbent Republicans John McCain and Rob Portman both enjoyed double-digit leads over their opponents, securing easy Republican victories.

Americans seem to prefer that the checks-and-balances envisioned by the founders be facilitated by having different parties control Congress and the White House.

Contrary to popular belief, most of the time Congress and the President are at odds; that is, most of the time the same political party does not control the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.

Congress has usually been controlled by the same party; with the odd man out being,;literally, the President. Only 16 times since 1945 have both branches of Congress and the Presidency been controlled by the same party; the Democrats have held this advantage more often than Republicans . However, it has happened four times since 2003, making this seem more common that it has been, historically . Prior to WWII, having House, Senate and White House controlled by the same party was the norm.

Since 1945, the House and Senate have been controlled by different parties only six;times . The first three were under Reagan . The other three have been since the 2000 elections, which makes this seem more normal to us than it is, historically.;From 1901-1945, this happened only twice.

And there have been only two complete turn-overs of Congress since 1949: one in 1995 and the other in 2007.

Policy Priorities Rely On A Majority

Stumping for Ossoff and Warnock ahead of the runoff on Monday, President-elect Joe Biden told Georgians how important their Senate victories would be for his own policy priorities.

Democrats concede the scope of the agenda is dependent on the Georgia results, Politico wrote.

Dual victories for Democrats on Tuesday, would also lead to a quicker confirmation process for his Cabinet nominees, according to Politico. Most Cabinet positions, like department secretaries, require a Senate majority to be confirmed.

And with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, the Biden-Harris administration could start running as sooner than if Congress was divided.

Divided Government In The United States

In the United States, divided government describes a situation in which one party controls the executive branch while another party controls one or both houses of the legislative branch.

Divided government is seen by different groups as a benefit or as an undesirable product of the model of governance used in the U.S. political system. Under said model, known as the , the state is divided into different branches. Each branch has separate and independent powers and areas of responsibility so that the powers of one branch are not in conflict with the powers associated with the others. However, the degree to which the president of the United States has control of Congress often determines their political strength – such as the ability to pass sponsored legislation, ratify treaties, and have Cabinet members and judges approved.

Early in the 19th century, divided government was rare, but since the 1970s it has become increasingly common.

Since last week, many Republicans have been feeling singularly nostalgic for November 1928, and with good reason. Itâs the last time that the party won such commanding majorities in the House of Representatives while also dominating the Senate. And, letâs face it, 1928 was a good time.

America was richâor so it seemed. Charles Lindbergh was on the cover of Time. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. Jean Lussier went over Niagara Falls in a rubber ball . Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in a talkie . Irving Aaronson and His Commanders raised eyebrows with the popularâand, for its time, scandalousâsong, âLetâs Misbehave,â and presidential nominee Herbert Hoover gave his Democratic opponent, Al Smith, a shellacking worthy of the history books.

The key takeaway: Itâs been a really, really long time since Republicans have owned Capitol Hill as they do now.

But what if the Republicans of 1928 owed their demise to a more fundamental force? What if it was demography, not economics, that truly killed the elephant?

On a surface level, the Great Depression was to blame.

WASHINGTON – Democrats took control of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday when Vice President Kamala Harris swore in three members to give the party a narrow grip on both houses of Congress as well as the White House for the first time in a decade.

The first of President Joe Bidens Cabinet nominees won Senate approval on Wednesday night: Avril Haines, tapped for the job of director of national intelligence.

Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff of Georgia and Alex Padilla of California took the oath of office in the Senate chamber hours after Biden and Harris were sworn in.

Warnock and Ossoff won upset victories in a pair of Jan. 5 runoff elections to split the Senate 50-50 with Harris, a Democrat, holding the decisive vote in any tie between Republicans and Democrats.

Padilla, Californias first Latino senator, was appointed to fill Harriss Senate seat after she resigned on Monday to assume the second highest U.S. office.

Swearing the new senators in, Harris laughed after she read out her own name as the California senator who had resigned, declaring: Yeah, that was very weird, OK.

The three Democrats give Biden a narrow advantage to pursue policies that include a fresh wave of relief for a nation hammered by the coronavirus pandemic in the face of deep political divisions.

The new arrangement makes Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer the majority leader, with Republican Mitch McConnell demoted to minority leader.

Nevada, a Democratic open-seat contest where Rep. Joe Heck ran against former state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto was called in Cortez Mastos favor. Prior to the release of the 2005 tape where Trump bragged about sexual assault, Heck had led Cortez Masto in the polls, but after Heck renounced his support for Trump , Cortez Masto was able to earn enough votes to allow Democrats to hang onto Nevada.

Illinois, where Kirk lost the seat to Duckworth, tipped to Democrats. Throughout the Illinois race, Duckworth led Kirk in the polls, but only in recent weeks did her lead break double digits. Duckworths victory gave Democrats one of five seats they needed to pick up to regain control in the Senate.

Democrats took exceedingly narrow control of the Senate on Wednesday after winning both runoff elections in Georgia, granting them control of Congress and the White House for the first time since 2011.

Democrat Jon Ossoff defeated Republican David Perdue, according to The Associated Press, making him the youngest member of the U.S. Senate and the first Jewish senator from Georgia. Earlier Raphael Warnock, a pastor from Atlanta, defeated GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler after a bitter campaign. Warnock becomes the first Black Democrat elected to the Senate from a Southern state.

The Senate will now be split 50-50 between the two parties, giving Vice President-elect Kamala Harris the tiebreaking vote.

US Presidents — 1850 to Present

When considering Steve and Bucky’s world of the early 20th century, we need to looking at the history we know from a new perspective — In this case, US presidents. Presidents of the late 19th century and early 20th century may seem like ancient history to us, but to our boys, they were as real and personable as Obama and Bush are to us today.

The below list shows presidents in office between 1850 and the present. Information is provided for notable events and presidencies that may have been memorable to Steve and Bucky (such as assassinations), as well as those within the lifetime of the boys.

Millard Fillmore (July 9, 1850 – March 4, 1853) — 13th

Franklin Pierce (March 4, 1853 – March 4, 1857) — 14th

James Buchanan (March 4, 1857 – March 4, 1861) — 15th

Abraham Lincoln (March 4, 1861 – April 15, 1865) — 16th [Assassinated] The Emancipation Proclamation occurred 56 years before Steve’s birth (MCU), which may seem like a long time, but that was within living memory of many. It would be to Steve what the 1940s are to most 20-something-year-olds today (or 1930s if you’re decrepit and old like me).

William McKinley (March 4, 1897 – September 14, 1901) — 25th [Assassinated] McKinley’s assassination (shot by an unemployed mill worker and anarchist) was only 16 years before Steve’s birth (MCU), and some 41 years before the events of the film (CA:TFA). To put that is context, the assassination of JFK occurred 53 years ago, so it was more recent to the boys than JFK is to us today.

Theodore Roosevelt (September 14, 1901 – March 4, 1909) — 26th

William Howard Taft (March 4, 1909 – March 4, 1913) — 27th

Woodrow Wilson (March 4, 1913 – March 4, 1921) — 28th This is the president who was in office when both Steve and Bucky were born. He led the US through WWI, created the Federal Reserve, and supported the 19th Amendment, which gave women the vote in the US. He also supported small business and farmers, made loans accessible to regular citizens, and supported unions rights to strikes, boycotts and (peaceful) protests. He had initially attempted to keep the US out of WWI, but Germany’s actions forced his hand. He wasn’t without fault, however, and his race relations were —less than desirable? Let’s be honest, he was downright detrimental to civil rights for Black Americans.

Warren G. Harding (March 4, 1921 – August 2, 1923) — 29th [Died in Office] Harding ran his campaign on the promise of a “return to normalcy” after WWI. His administration reversed a lot of the progressive legislation brought in my his predecessors, giving tax cuts to high incomes, limiting immigration, and removing spending controls implemented during WWI. He appears to have lived the 1920s lifestyle with parties and private entertainment with alcohol despite Prohibition. Rumors of corruption within his administration plagued his presidency in later years. He dies while in office, of a heart attack. He is considered by most historians to be one of the worst US presidents.

Calvin Coolidge (August 2, 1923 – March 4, 1929) — 30th Coolidge was in power throughout much of Steve and Bucky’s childhood, from the ages of 5-11 (Steve, MCU). He would be familiar to the boys the way either Clinton or Bush are to most Americans between the ages of 20-40 today. He took office following the death of Harding, and was considered quiet and gained the nickname “Silent Cal”. Coolidge’s agenda largely followed Hardings, though “disdained regulation” and his hands-off approach to government has been blamed for the Great Depression. He was, however, an active supporter of civil rights — appointing Black Americans to government positions, supporting anti-lynching laws, and passing the Indian Citizenship Act.

Herbert Hoover (March 4, 1929 – March 4, 1933) — 31st Hoover was president during the stock market crash in 1929 and through the beginning of the Great Depression. Steve was 11-15 years old (MCU) during his time in office. During WWI Hoover was the head of the American Relief Administration, giving hunger-relief in Europe — gaining him a reputation as a humanitarian. While US secretary of commerce he led the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Hoover Dam. During the Great Depression Hoover’s policies were ineffective in overcoming the economic crisis. Following the end of his term he wrote books and delivered speeches, repeatedly blasting his successor’s policies, particularly FDR’s New Deal.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (March 4, 1933 – April 12, 1945) — 32nd [Died in Office] Roosevelt is the president who got the US through the Great Depression and WWII. He was president throughout the boys’ early adulthood (in Steve’s case ages 15-27, MCU) and would have likely had the most effect on them personally. He was the only US president to get elected four times. Roosevelt, on top of his contributions to policy, was remarkable due to his health issues. In 1921 he contracted polio, resulting in permanent paralysis of his legs and being wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. While in itself it is an interesting fact, its significance, to Steve in particular, is that he was able to reach such a high office and be so successful in spite of his disabilities. You can only image how seeing Roosevelt overcome his limitations would have inspired Steve. Roosevelt was determined to be seen as strong and taught himself to walk short distances in braces so as not to be seen by the public in his wheelchair. Previous to his election as president, he was also governor of New York, and began a career of implementing progressive, new social programs. At the beginning of his presidency, 13 million Americans were unemployed. He kicked off his first 100 days with sweeping economic reforms — including the ‘New Deal’. He set up “alphabet agencies” for agriculture, employment, wage and price regulations, insurance and regulation of banks and the stockmarket, and economic relief for the unemployed. By 1936 the economy was showing signs of improvement — unemployment had dropped from 25% to 14%. He wasn’t without criticism, of course, there were objections to his increased government spending and perceived move of the country towards socialism. He also signed the order to detain all those of Japanese decent, holding some 120,000 people in internment camps between. This action stripped them, many of whom were American citizens, of their jobs, homes, and freedom. It is considered to be one of the most atrocious violations of civil liberties in American history.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Nerds Amalgamated Go! We are here once again with your irregular dose of fun, news, entertainment and educational synopsis that we like to call a show. We hope everyone is surviving the rigours and tortures of university, college, school, work, life, or whatever else it is you do. This week we have another exciting show for you all filled with space, games, and some viewing material to look forward to. We hope you enjoy and let us know what you think, we do listen.

First up it is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo missions and Buck has brought us links to a number of different stories regarding them. Also, some of the myriad events that are happening around the world involved in the celebration for everyone to enjoy. We also talk about the movies inspired by events and documentaries about the rock stars who ride the bullet into space. What is your favourite Apollo story, movie, mission, or general piece of trivia? Drop us a line or post in the comments on the facebook page.

Next up we look at this year’s less than stellar E3. The major highlight moments were the Keanu Reeves appearance at the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Where he showed once again that indelible charm that makes everyone love him when people yelled out from the crowd. Why can’t he be the President of America? He would be a darn tooting sight better than almost everyone they have had for a long time. We also take a moment to acknowledge the fabulous Ikumi Nakamura, the director of Ghostwire Tokyo who just had fun. We also take a moment to glance at Devolver Studios and the madcap mayhem that is the ongoing saga of their E3 show. It is still so much more fun then must be legal. The biggest failure was the announcement that Bethesda is making Fallout 76 a battle royale (yayyyy, another one…yawn) in an attempt to save the game from becoming a complete failure (too late).

This week the DJ has the story of Netflix planning a new series based on Tom Clancy’s The Division. The discussion runs through the idea, worrying at the potential failure of yet another game to cinema/television cross over. Further the potential overload of too many post-apocalyptic shows (no, not with zombies either, we discussed that). We do know two of the cast members Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, so it starts with two beautiful people surviving… or do they?

Presidential Watches: U.S. Leaders & Their Favorite Timepieces

It has long been custom for the president of the United States to carry or wear a timepiece. In fact, every leader of this country since 1789 has owned a watch of some sort. Some presidents were horology gurus, while others simply wore a watch out of necessity. No matter, watchmakers from around the world have looked to the leaders of the United States to wear their pieces. With presidents constantly being covered by the media, there is no better way for a watch brand to gain exposure. Not to mention, luxury watch brands want their products to be associated with power and nobility. From George Washington to Donald Trump, pocket watch to wrist watch, and Timex to Rolex—presidential watch favorites vary by individual. Some of these choices may indeed surprise you!

George Washington

The first president of the United States owned a few different pocket watches. One, a Swiss made piece from an unknown watchmaker, was engraved with “1775/G. Washington” on the inside movement cover. He was said to have later gifted the watch to friend Colonel Thomas Johnson, the first governor of Maryland.

Another of his pocket watches, designed by Jean-Antoine Lépine, was obtained in Paris by fellow statesman and founding father, Gouverneur Morris. Morris asked Washington if there was anything he may retrieve for the president while away in Europe, and this was the one item he requested. Lépine was a famous watchmaker who worked for the likes of Louis XVI, Louis XV, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

At the time of his presidency, our nation’s capital was in Philadelphia. This is where Washington bought one of his pocket watches from watchmaker Ephraim Clark. It is known as the McCabe watch, named after its maker James McCabe. It is said that Washington regularly visited Ephraim Clark to compare his piece with their regulator.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln is said to have owned several pocket watches. One of these pocket watches has a unique story, and was recently deconstructed to reveal a secret message left there for the president at the start of the Civil War. This particular gold pocket watch was purchased by Lincoln from Springfield jeweler George Chatterton. As the story goes, watchmaker Jonathan Dillon was repairing Lincoln’s watch in Washington D.C. when word spread that battle had broken out at Fort Sumter. Dillon claimed to have inscribed a message on the inside of the watch, later writing to the New York Times to confess his story. In 2009, the Smithsonian was contacted by a relative of Dillon’s who had uncovered the New York Times article while researching his genealogy. He simply asked the Smithsonian whether the inscription existed, a question to which they did not have an answer. This prompted the museum to do something unprecedented and allow the piece to be taken apart. Upon disassembly, Dillon’s secret message was in fact revealed, though the message inscribed was slightly different than what he originally reported to the newspaper. So, Lincoln wore this watch, all the while unknowingly carrying Dillon’s message with him. Imagine having that story to tell your family!

Warren G. Harding

The 29th President of the United States was a Freemason, and carried a Masonic watch. The device featured hour markers represented by Masonic symbols, such as an hourglass and compass. The case was triangular shaped, and always included the famous all-seeing eye, again reflecting Masonic symbolism. These watches were produced exclusively by Hiram Watch Inc., a company named for one of the key figures in Masonic lore, Hiram Abiff.

Harry S. Truman

Harry Truman owned a number of presidential watches, including a Gallet Flight Officer and a Vulcain Cricket. The Gallet Flying Officer, referred to as the Flight Officer, was one of the first waterproof chronographs. This was also the first watch to tell world time. The serial number found on Truman’s model indicates that his may have been an original model, if not the original model.

Upon completing his tenure, the White House News Photographers gifted President Truman with a Vulcain Cricket with the words “One More Please” engraved on the back. Of course, this was a request the photographers were used to making of the president and a phrase they likely barked at him on more than one occasion.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Like Truman, Eisenhower also had a Vulcain Cricket. It was the watch he primarily wore while in office, though he had others. He owned watches from brands like Rolex and Hamilton, and was even featured in a 1946 advertisement for Heuer. Eisenhower was also the first president to have a Rolex, having been gifted a personalized Rolex Datejust by the company itself.

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy was known to have owned several watches including models from Omega, Cartier, and Bulova. Perhaps the most famous JFK watch is the Rolex Day-Date that was gifted to the president by Marilyn Monroe in 1962. Kennedy is said to have immediately rejected the gift, advising one of his staff to “get rid of it.” Of course, the leader of the free world wouldn’t want there to be any evidence of his extramarital affair. The watch was sold at auction in 2005, engraved with the message, “Jack/With love as always/from/Marilyn/May 29th, 1962,” along with the original box and a poem that Monroe had penned to her lover.

Kennedy’s wife Jacqueline gifted him with a Cartier watch for their fourth wedding anniversary, prior to him becoming president. This is the watch that Kennedy was wearing at the time he was assassinated and it is reported to have been handed back to Jackie at the hospital, following the tragedy.

Lyndon B. Johnson

Like his predecessor before him, LBJ had quite the collection of watches. He owned a Patek Philippe with the proverb “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You” on the dial, a declaration he commonly spoke. Johnson also had a Vulcain Cricket, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox, a Hamilton Pacer, and a Rolex Day-Date. President Johnson is the commander-in-chief most associated with the Rolex brand, as he was the first to wear his Day-Date on what is now called the “President” bracelet. The Day-Date model has actually been given the nickname “Rolex President” and it is often referred to this way in the watch world.

Bill Clinton

President Bill Clinton is the greatest watch enthusiast of all the United States presidents, especially since leaving office. However, while campaigning and serving his term as president, Clinton famously wore a $50 Timex Ironman. Clinton was the first president to steer away from wearing expensive, luxury watch brands while in office. His unsightly Timex was a far cry from the Swiss-made designer brands that his predecessors before him were so fond of, and it even earned attention and criticism from the Washington Post’s style section following the inaugural ball.

Despite being poked fun at for his choice in fashion, former president Clinton now boasts an exceptional collection of timepieces from brands like Franck Muller, Cartier, Quinting, Panerai, Shinola, and more. He has been photographed wearing so many different watches since leaving office, that it has been challenging for experts to piece together exactly what he’s collected.

George W. Bush

Similar to Clinton, George W. Bush wanted his choice of watch to reflect that he was a man of the people. Rather than opting for a luxury timepiece, Bush regularly wore a Timex i-Control and a Timex Indiglo while campaigning and in office. In 2007, it was reported that Bush’s watch had been stolen from his wrist while he was greeting a crowd and shaking hands in Albania. Stanley Kubrick and me: designing the posting for A Clockwork Orange

Philip Castles airbrushed artwork features on book extends for David Bowie and Pulp but his lurid imagery for A Clockwork Orange abides his most notorious work he recollects his love with the director

Philip Castle indicates me into his front room to assure the naked lady on her knees next to the family piano. The plaster statue is battered and unstable and diverting yellow with day, but I would recognise those teats anywhere. This is one of the nude statues that serve as furniture and serve up boozes from their breasts in the sinister, darkly funny opening panoramas of Stanley Kubricks 1971 cinema A Clockwork Orange. There was me, the hell is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to even off our rassoodocks what to do with the evening.

In Kubricks pessimistic lampoon of British youth culture, Malcolm McDowells futuristic ultraviolent mod antihero adjusts the situation in voiceover as the camera washes back from him and his bowler-hatted, white-codpieced droogs, taking in one pornographic bronze after the other, just like this one I viddied with my own attentions, O my brothers, in Castles house.

The curators of Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick, an exhibit of artwork motivated by Kubrick with labour by Mat Collishaw, Michael Nyman, Jane and Louise Wilson and many more, were understandably frantic to acquire it. But its much very vulnerable to move, remarks Castle, who offered up his own work instead to Somerset House in London, including a new portrait of Kubrick.

The story of how Castle came to own an original prop from the Korova Milkbar is a glimpse of the scholastic precision that became Stanley Kubrick one of cinema greatest auteurs, a perfectionist who sought to sculpt every aspect of a film even its publicity.

Castle is a poster and album report artist whose glossy, sometimes lurid airbrush painting form you have witnessed even if you dont know it. His act straddles from the teardrop oozing from David Bowies shoulder blade on the covering of Aladdin Sane in 1973( in his vestibule hangs a periodical signed by Bowie) to portraying Pulp for the treat of their 1994 book HisnHers. He too generated the hilariously over the top 1950s-style sci-fi poster for Tim Burtons Mars Attacks.

Yet Castles finest hour and perhaps the reason Bowie, Pulp and Burton later wanted to work with him saw right at the start of his job. As a postgraduate from the Royal College of Art at the fag end of its age as the residence of British pa cover, he placed an ad for his illustration work in the Evening Standard. He got a call from none other than Stanley Kubricks publicist, inviting Castle to the directors home north of London to discuss a posting for Kubricks new film.

Kubrick by this time was the most worshipped English expression filmmaker in the world, celebrated for Lolita, Dr Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Hed been living in Britain since the early 1960 s and toiled almost entirely from home. He did everything in the house, remembers Castle. The striking stuff was that all the doors were locked. They were all shut tight. They were great dog lovers and were scared stiff the dogs would run out and fade. There were signs on everything: Keep the door shut. I guess they had so many parties going through. It was just curious, something you wouldnt expect.

The director looped up his latest film and they watched it, with Castle taking notes and attaining sketches in a Basildon Bond notebook that he still has. Its blue-tinted sheets are filled with sketches of bowler-hatted ultraviolence Kubricks new cinema was an icily sardonic vision of stylised havoc and dehumanising penalty accommodated from Anthony Burgesss 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange.

Castles little notebook establishes, amazingly, that he came up with what is today considered to be one of the classic movie posters of all time practically then and there. One change was that he tried initially to fit his attracts of a brutal searching Malcolm McDowell holding a glinting bayonet over a bronze of a kneeling nude inside a giant word A.

This becomes a parted pyramid in the final form of the poster, which is covered in Castles hyper-pop colours against a grey background with a slogan that attracts no pierces: Being the escapades of a young man whose principal fascinates are assault, ultraviolence and Beethoven.

Eyes dominate the posting. As well as Alexs gazing deadly attention there is a swimming eyeball refer to his medicine, in which his eyes are pinned wide open as he is forced to watch murderou films and Nazi information. Yet what grabs you most is the glisten blade that seems to leap forwards in 3D. Its very pointy, as Castle modestly applies it.

Kubrick wanted to shape every aspect of the movies receipt. He had people going to the cinemas where it was going to be shown to make sure that the screens were clean, recollects Castle. It was in the same spirit of absolute verify that Kubrick sent his sign designer a effigy from the Korova Milkbar so he had been able to portray its features accurately. He has a photograph of his young house proudly constituting under a huge billboard version of his poster on a London street. Yet the strong publicity campaign in which he played such a center duty backfired.

A Clockwork Orange was a smacked but its reception was a real repugnance indicate. Narrations of real-life Clockwork Orange gangs crowded the British newspapers. Kubrick was accused of inducing slaughter and his moral anecdote was accused of debauchery. The director himself censored A Clockwork Orange from British screens. For a long time, until its rerelease in 2000, the sole likenes apart from a few stills that returned British film love a sense of the form and menace of A Clockwork Orange was Castles potent poster.

He carried on working with Kubrick and the pair stayed pals, even after the director rejected his sign for Barry Lyndon in 1975 because it was too joke. Their closest collaboration was to come on the Vietnam war film Full Metal Jacket, for which Castle coated a helmet with a peace token and the scrawled statements BORN TO KILL. Kubrick was interested in details such as how it would look in black and white in a single line of a neighbourhood newspaper. Perhaps still scarred by the Clockwork Orange debate, he also went Castle to try an alternative design for Asian markets because he was worried the US helmet would get vandalised.

Yet the artists rememberings of Stanley Kubrick are warm. One daylight the administrator phoned Castle out of the blue. What strange request would it be?

He mentioned: Would you like to buy a puppy?
