Hi here's another jealousy ask: so in your whole Fair Youth saga with Willy Shakespeare which by the way, absolutely is a thing that happened, how jealous do you think Joe got? and Nicky's response? (I mean Willy insulted Joe! I just keep trying to imagine Joe's reaction to that alone, not to mention Willy waxing poetics about how Niccolo should get married and make babies!

im so glad you asked this, bc i could talk about the fair youth thing for forever- if i wasnt too lazy to do the necessary research i would write a 500k word fic on it, its so fucking funny and i love thinking about it

like 1.) the hilarity of shakespeare wanting nicky to not only get married but also have a kid. nicky. homosexual extraordinaire. happily married for 900 500 years. like ‘why wont you get married? why do you deprive women of your, uh [checks notes] husbandry?’ ‘IM GAY WILLIAM’

and like, i cant imagine joe would be threatened by the idea of nicky getting married. see: ‘homosexual extraordinaire’. but theres just SOMETHING about the way that shakespeare is just like ‘your beauty is otherworldly, i lock you up inside of my chest like my greatest treasure, your affection is more important than rank or riches to me, if you died the entire world would mourn your beautiful face, if you were a woman we’d definitely fuck, you deprive the world of your children--' LIKE EXCUSE ME, BACK UP A SECOND

also i was just going through the sonnets again bc i Love them and i found another example (#16) of shakespeare shitting on the FY getting his portrait done

With virtuous wish would bear you living flowers,

Much liker than your painted counterfeit:

which like... ‘some women out there could bear you children[’flowers’] that will carry on your name/beauty much better than a portrait would.’

theres a certain Ouch there to, ‘a woman bearing you a child (something joe cant obviously do) will honor your beauty better than a portrait (something joe def can do) would’.

there’s a certain.... gay insecurity to that, a feeling that you can’t provide for your partner in a way that they could be provided for in a het relationship. who knows if joe would be hurt by something like that, but like.... i would tbh.

2.) i didnt mention it in the essay but shakespeare is SO JEALOUS AND CLINGY its actually embarrassing (#57)

theres A BUNCH of sonnets that have this exact tone and its embarrassing. hes so passive-aggressive about it. like bro. hes not interested. rip the actual real-life Fair Youth, im sure putting up with this dude was difficult as fuck

and like, just the Audacity Of This Bitch to act so entitled to nicky’s time, and then get so moody when he doesnt get it.

3.) also he kind of.... chided, i guess, the FY for ‘wantonness’ (#96) a few times and like. stay in your lane bro

so like, theyre beautiful poems and im sure its very flattering receiving such nice sonnets, and so many too! but oh my god the audacity of all of them is astounding. if i was joe id be offended by all of these.
