y’know its taken me a while to nail down what precisely got me to lose interest in mha canon, but i cracked the code:
the more recent parts just feel like horikoshi is tired of creating for it. some plot beats are predictable, designs for new characters and/or old characters lack imagination and his statement that he wants to wrap it up soon. like esp the designs part bc maybs its just me but i really liked how unique some ppl and quirks were in early canon - mina and kurogiri standing out in particularly. but either everyone is Normal Looking or they’ve got the most unpleasing designs.
maybs im just still a little mad that horikoshi made thirteen into a regular ass cute woman instead of the formless void he straight up implied from the first major arc (see the implication of thirteen’s suit being destroyed meant major health penalties outside of disintegration of their body). i always always loved the idea of thirteen being straight up a black hole in a general humanoid shape where their quirk was always active, hence the suit helping keep them contained for the safety of others and to help keep themself together. but nope cute woman is the one he went for i guess.
and some of the plot beats are just,,, really predictable? (spoilers i guess) like the whole school setting just kind of being tossed to one side bc of big society problem is a v common trope for school settings, which is really boring?? yeah everyone wants an epic story, but it just. really doesn’t work in particular for mha bc the whole set up is straight up focused on heroic education taught in a school setting so uhhh hm. and aoyama being revealed as the traitor in kind of an undramatic fashion, when bc he was the obvious candidate makes it just. super boring? it’s p much the worst way to pull off that kind of plot thread, and i for one, still think it could have been a really good way to develop some of the characters closer to izuku like idk uraraka??? who,, when did she last get any kind of development outside izuku? bc if she got any since the overhaul arc (barely) then it’s news to me!
there are ways that horikoshi could just take things in ways that are original and could freshen the story up in ways that aren’t totally out there and ways that aren’t so uninterestingly predictable, but he’s just kind of. not. and it’s always hard to keep interest in smth that even the creator’s interest in it is waning.
