Bella Rosenfeld Chagall (1895-1944)

Marc Chagall's wife and muse, Bella, was the subject of many of the artist’s paintings. They met in the Russian-Jewish village in Belarus where they both grew up and fell in love at first sight.

The Blue Lovers • 1914

Bella Rosenfeld was a talented writer. Her memoirs were written between 1939 and her death in 1944. Written in Yiddish, they tell the stories of Bella's experiences growing up in a small village in Belarus, from early childhood and adolescence and her early relationship with Chagall.

After her death Chagall and Bella's only child, Ida, worked together to collect and edit Bella's writings and publish them as books. Ida translated the text from Yiddish to French and Chagall created 32 illustrations and an afterword. Burning Lights was published in 1946. The second volume, The First Encounter was published the following year.

E' come se mi conoscesse da sempre, come se sapesse tutto della mia infanzia, del mio presente, del mio avvenire; come se vegliasse su di me, mi capisse perfettamente, sebbene la veda per la prima volta. Sentii che era la mia donna.

Per anni il suo amore ha influenzato la mia pittura… Bella scriveva come viveva, come amava, come accoglieva gli amici. Le sue parole, le sue frasi sono una patina di colore sulla tela… Le cose comuni, le persone, i paesaggi, le feste ebraiche, i fiori – questo era il suo mondo, questi erano i suoi soggetti… Poi a un tratto, un rombo di tuono, le nuvole si aprirono alle sei di sera del 2 settembre 1944, quando Bella lasciò questo mondo. Tutto è divenuto tenebre.

In un mondo di artisti quasi sempre maledetti che vedono nel dolore l'unica fonte di ispirazione, Chagall ha saputo dimostrare come la fonte della propria arte possa sgorgare da un amore devoto e innocente. Come è stato il suo.

Dopo la morte dell’adorata Bella, per nove mesi si rifiuterà di dipingere e anche in seguito, quando riprese i colori delle sue tele, la sua arte risultò profondamente mutata. Otto anni dopo, nel 1952, grazie alla figlia Ida conosce Valentina Brodsky che fu la compagna di vita del pittore negli anni della maturità.

Il suo amore per Bella rimarrà per sempre in quelle figure da lei ispirate, sospese nello spazio e nel tempo, l’espressione pittorica più alta della gioia di vivere.

Ivan Aivazovsky

He painted seascapes. The pictures, painted in Venice, Florence, Naples, Amalfi and Sorrento, presented at the exhibitions in Rome and Naples, brought him great success.

He settled in his native Feodosia (Crimea), where he bought a plot of land and built a house on it. The mansion was always full of guests - many visitors wanted to see the famous artist and his works. Over time Aivazovsky turned it into a private museum, open to the public, and added a gallery.

Valentin Serov

Valentin Serov painted portraits and landscapes, drew illustrations and published the magazine "World of Art", taught painting and was a member of the board of the Tretyakov Gallery. "Girl with Peaches", canvases with members of the imperial family, a poster with Anna Pavlova and a portrait of a naked Ida Rubinstein - we recall the work of the famous Russian artist.

Nikolai Roerich

Artist, scenographer, philosopher, writer, traveler, archeologist, public figure - the list of Nikolai Roerich's roles is endless. "Master of the Mountains."

He studied Oriental philosophy, collected Japanese art objects, and wrote several essays on Japan and India.

In his art the artist combined realism and symbolism, paying great attention to color. He almost abandoned oil and turned to the tempera technique: a lot of experimentation with the composition of paints, using the method of superimposing one tone on another.

He lived in London, the USA and Paris. From the end of 1935 Roerich permanently lived in India. This period - one of the most fruitful in his work. For 12 years he painted more than a thousand paintings.

Chagall became an artist of world fame, when he was not even 30 years old. Marc Chagall is considered his own not only in Russia and Belarus but also in France, the USA and Israel - all the countries where he lived and worked.

Almost all of his canvases with female images depict Bella Rosenfeld - "Walking", "Beauty in a white collar", "Over the town".

Kazimir Malevich

Kazimir Malevich painted in different styles: neoprimitivism, impressionism, alogism and cubism. However, none of them reflected his view of reality, so Malevich developed a new direction - Suprematism. Later the ideas of Suprematism were used not only in painting, but also in other spheres - design, architecture, cinematography.

He spoke of his pictures as a "healthy form of Art," which could not be evaluated by the criteria of "like" or "dislike. In 1919, the artist's first solo exhibition "Kazimir Malevich''. His Path from Impressionism to Suprematism. He distinguished three stages in Suprematism: black, color and white. At the first stage, the artist explored the relationship of forms, at the next - the colors, at the last - the textures.

Mikhail Vrubel

The painter's peculiar style: he painted his canvases with filigree angular brushstrokes reminiscent of a mosaic.

In 1901 the artist's son was born, Nadezhda Zabela left the scene, and the contents of the family was fully borne by Mikhail Vrubel. This worsened his state of mind: he became withdrawn, short-tempered, suffered from insomnia. During these years he again painted the demons. Work on "Demon Prostrate" literally boiled: instead of the usual three or four hours, the artist sometimes worked for 14 hours a day. In 1902, Vrubel was placed in a psychiatric hospital - from that moment began a period of his decline.

When Chagall painted "Les trois cierges" (“The Three Candles”) in 1939, he could never have imagined that this lyrically romantic and nostalgic evocation of his life and loves, describing people, creatures, and places—fanciful and real—would play an accessory role in a miraculous true-life drama of survival and deliverance, in twin odysseys from the Old World to the New. The symbolic elements in "Les trois cierges" pertain to Jewish ritual and lore, signifying the celebration of the Sabbath, and the traditional wedding ceremony, which Chagall embellished —- as was his custom - —with his own idiosyncratic touches. The three tall tapers are Shabbat candles, one for each member of the artist’s family — Bella, Ida, and Chagall himself.
