Unleashing the NAS Boom: A Consumer’s Guide to Network Attached Storage Market Trends
Alright, fellow tech enthusiasts and data hoarders, gather ‘round because we’re diving headfirst into the realm of Network Attached Storage (NAS). No, it’s not a new-age superhero, but it might just save you from the chaos of managing your ever-growing data stash. Our journey today is fueled by a recent report (Report ID: SQMIG50B2023) that spills the beans on the Global Consumer NAS Market. Buckle up, it’s going to be a storage-filled ride!
Tumblr media
The NAS Market Marvel:
First off, let’s address the elephant in the server room — USD 85.60 billion in 2021! Yes, you read it right. The NAS market is not just growing; it’s doing a victory lap. And guess what’s leading the charge? 2-Bay designs, strutting their stuff with the fastest growth rate. Move over, 1-Bay; it’s a two-bay world now.
NAS for Dummies (No Offense, Seriously):
For the uninitiated, NAS (Network Attached Storage) is like having your own cloud but without the ominous overcast. It’s where your files throw a housewarming party, and all your devices are invited. Why? Because NAS lets you access your data seamlessly without the drama of external drive connections. It’s the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of data storage.
Plot Twist:
Size Matters! In the NAS universe, size does matter. The 1-Bay design caters to individuals and small-scale users, keeping it compact and cost-effective. Meanwhile, the 2-Bay design is the versatile superhero, accommodating two hard drives, and flaunting a feature set that would make any 1-Bay blush.
End-User Chronicles:
The IT and telecommunications sector is flexing its muscles, driven by global ICT spending hitting the USD 5.5 trillion mark in 2022. Meanwhile, the retail and e-commerce sector is on a growth spree, fueled by the online shopping frenzy. NAS is the unsung hero, quietly supporting these sectors’ data storage needs.
Region Wars:
North America takes the crown, thanks to industry giants like Buffalo Americas Inc., Dell Technologies Inc., and friends. Europe, with its commitment to digitalization, is gearing up for a growth spurt. The rest of the world? Well, they’re catching up too.
The Drama of Drivers and Restraints:
The rising adoption of NAS systems is pushing vendors to tailor solutions for businesses with insatiable data appetites. But wait, there’s a twist. The cloud is looming on the horizon, threatening to rain on NAS’s parade. However, a hybrid approach could save the day — cue the hero music!
Meet the NAS Avengers:
In the competitive landscape, we have the Avengers of NAS — ASUSTOR, D-Link, Seagate, and more. They’re not just saving the day; they’re innovating like there’s no tomorrow. Seagate and QNAP even teamed up to create enterprise storage solutions, a power move in the NAS universe.

Conclusion:
And there you have it, folks! The NAS market is not just about storage; it’s a saga of growth, challenges, and innovation. As we navigate the data-filled future, remember that NAS is not just a solution; it’s the unsung hero keeping your digital life in order. So, whether you’re a business mogul or a tech-savvy individual, NAS has a spot for you in its data-driven universe. Happy storing!

DO HA PHUONG
Countries & Regions / Vietnam
1. Job description
I'm currently working in PR and Marketing department at a local IT company located in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture and am in charge of brand promotion through newsletters, videos, SNS, etc. Additionally, I participate in the "Yaizu Machikado Reporter" program, in which I write articles to promote the charm of the local area. I also serve as a translator during meetings with our Vietnamese team and an ICT supporter for some activities, like Zoom broadcasting.
I graduated from Shizuoka University Department of Literature. I've always had a passion for writing and creating contents. I wanted to incorporate my native language, Vietnamese, into my work, so I actively searched for a company with partnerships in Vietnam and eventually found my current employer.
I regularly communicate with my seniors to ensure that our content accurately reflects the mantra of Sunloft. I believe that working at a local IT company has many benefits. One is that not only have I gained valuable knowledge in the field, but I've also had the opportunity to connect with many members of the community through my work. I'm grateful for the warm support I've received both professionally and personally.

2. Reason for moving to Shizuoka Prefecture
I always wanted to study abroad in Japan and after passing the entrance exam for university, I finally had the chance to do so at Shizuoka University. During my time in Shizuoka, I was embraced by the warm community and formed close bonds with the people here, making them feel like a second family to me. I also fell in love with the peaceful atmosphere and warm climate of Shizuoka, as well as the low cost of living. These factors, combined with my strong desire to continue living in this special place, led me to ultimately choose to stay in Shizuoka after graduating from the university.

3. Attractive qualities of living in Shizuoka
Living in Shizuoka is truly a special experience, and the blessing of nature is its most alluring aspect. From the majestic mountains to the breathtaking ocean, Shizuoka truly offers the best of both worlds. The weather is always nice and warm, with little to no snow to worry about. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji.
One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is to drive around the prefecture and explore new places.  There are many outdoor adventures waiting for you, like camping in the open nature or paragliding in front of Mt. Fuji. The Izu Peninsula, in particular, is one of my favorite spots where you can experience the beauty of the four seasons, for it is the beautiful cherry blossom in spring or the sunset at the breezing sea in summer. I also love going hiking in the nearby mountains, even if it's just for a short hike. It is a great way to get some exercise and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Another highlight of living in Shizuoka is the cuisine, with its famous wasabi from Utogi, fresh Sakura Shrimp from Suruga Bay, and delicious green tea from plantations across the Prefecture. The fruits here are also top-notch, with sweet and juicy mandarin oranges, strawberries, and peaches available year-round. The cost of living here is not expensive, so I can afford to eat healthy fresh food every day.
Finally, people of Shizuoka are what really make this place special. Unlike in big cities where people can be distant and cold, the people here are warm and welcoming. The community is tight-knit, and it's easy to ask for help if you ever need it. This sense of community combined with the beautiful nature and delicious food make Shizuoka a place where you can achieve a truly balanced work and life.

4. Message
As a young person who works for an IT company, I find working and living in Shizuoka to be very attractive. Shizuoka is surrounded by nature and has good transportation to urban areas, making it easy to balance work and personal life. In addition, Shizuoka's IT companies have a unique friendly atmosphere that is characteristic of local businesses, making it easy to communicate with colleagues and superiors. Many companies are committed to teamwork and actively work on new ideas and technologies, creating an environment that fosters growth. Working in Shizuoka provides the opportunity to be in a relaxed local environment, while also having the chance to gain expertise and advance one's career. I hope you come to Shizuoka and enjoy working and living here.

BPO promotion schemes under Digital India Programme.
A large portion of this sector's revenue is currently generated in the areas around the major cities of Bengaluru and Chennai, Delhi NCR and Gurugram, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The country's other regions, which have access to the talent pool as well as infrastructure, will not be able to take advantage of the global boom. It is important to capitalize on the rise of this industry and focus the attention of the BPO IT industry towards smaller/rural areas for their inclusive growth.
This type of demographic shift is essential to bridge the digital divide in today's environment. This is why the ministry launched the India BPO Promotion Scheme IBPS and the North East BPO Promotion Scheme NEBPS under the Digital India Programme. The Invest India Scheme for MSME's aims to promote Information and Communication Technology in the MSME sector by adapting ICT tools into their businesses and production processes. The bpo program aims to raise awareness about eplatforms and promote digital marketing in MSME. It also empowers MSME's by digitally improving their competitiveness and efficiency.
BPO Promotion Schemes under the Digital India Programme aim to create approximately 1.5 lakh jobs for local youths in smaller/rural areas and to attract investment to the respective regions to support all-round development and economic wellbeing of the society.
A.) India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS).
The India BPO Promotion Scheme, (IBPS), is a program under the Digital India Programme that aims to encourage establishment of large numbers of seats for BPO/ITES operations in India.
It is divided among the States in a specific proportion of its population. This would allow for capacity building in smaller cities, in terms of infrastructure and manpower, and could be used to support the next wave in IT/ITES-led growth.
Important Features:
1.) Financial Support: 50% of capital expenditure on BPO/ITES operations can be used towards capital expenditure (CAPEX), and/or operational spending (OPEX), on permissible items. The upper limit is Rs. 1 Lakh/Seat.
2.) 2.) Special incentives for women and persons with special needs
3.) 3.) Incentives to generate employment beyond the target and widespread dispersal within state, including rural areas.
4.) 4.) Encouragement of local entrepreneurs to start new ventures.
5.) 5.) Special consideration will be given to the Hilly states HP, J&K, and Uttarakhand.
Here's a quick overview of its operations:
Total number of seats : 48.300
Total Allocated Seats - Date: 57,697
Current Allocated Seats: 44,092
Budget Outlay: Rs. 493 Crore
Operational/Tenured BPO / ITES Units - 227
No Cities where Units Operational/Tenure Completed : 93
B.) North East BPO Promotion Scheme - (NEBPS).
Under the Digital India Programme, the North East BPO Promotion Scheme, (NEBPS), aims to encourage establishment of many seats for BPO/ITES operations. This would allow for the building of regional capacity in terms of infrastructure and manpower, which would be the basis of next wave of IT/ITES-led growth.
Important Features:
Financial support [Capital and/or Operational expenses (CAPEX)] up to 50% of the seat's expenditure, with a maximum limit of Rs 1 Lakh/seat
# Special incentives for:
1.) 1.) Employment for women and persons with disabilities
2.) 2.) Generating additional employment beyond the target.
3.) Local entrepreneurs.
4.) 4.) Training incentives
Nodal Agency for this Scheme implementation will be Software Technology Parks of India.
Here's a quick overview of its operations:
Total number of seats : 5,000
Total Allocated Seats - Date: 3,511
Current Allocated Seats: 1,451
Budget Outlay: Rs. 50 Crore
Operational/Tenured BPO / ITES Units - 19
11 Cities where Units Operational/Tenure were completed
Locale:
NEBPS will be implemented in all eight (8) States of NER viz. Arunachal Pradesh (Arunachal Pradesh), Assam, Manipur Meghalaya Mizoram Nagaland Sikkim, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Tripura.
The above BPO scheme example shows that there are important steps being taken to develop the BPO ecosystem in every corner of the country. Potential candidates should be aware of certain criteria for eligibility for BPO schemes before they invest their efforts in obtaining these schemes. This campaign requires strict protocols from the authorities in charge. Fraudulent activity will not be allowed under the scheme. It can cause serious damage to the reputation of the regulator.
Here, we will discuss the IBPS (National Examination Board for Public Service) and NEBPS (National Economic Board for Public Service). The BPO scheme government in India under Digital India initiative has one purpose: to improve internet infrastructure and increase accessibility for citizens. The BPO session plans prove to have been very successful in this regard.
These innovative campaigns and initiatives are driven by the demand and growth in the IT/ITES sector. This is what ultimately drives the economic side to its full potential. It also helps the quality of services and the business side. It would be an important contribution to India's efforts to become a leader in Technology adaptation at the grass-root level if it is implemented in accordance with established standards.

Pre-Event plannings
I had a grand plan, to be lawfully wedded to my bby on our 10th anniversary, 1 year after proposing to her on our 9th, in Jeju, in front of a field of flowers with a fantastical view of the sparkling sea. I even rushed and got the engagement ring ready before our planned trip to Korea in April! But alas, covid-19 had to happen and all was foiled. After the initial plan was foiled in Apr’20, we held out hope that we would still be able to travel by the year end.. but yeah covid gave us a great big middle finger, as yet again, cases skyrocketed and we were all but grounded in sunny Singapore.
Finally, in Dec’20, I decided to propose before July’21! Since the ring and the JannPaul box has been hiding at the back of the closet for the past year, and i didnt want to put it off any longer.
i began to scout for and collate decor items bit by bit on carousell, shopee and other shopping sites. It was a painful process because my initial plan was to recreate “Venezia”, which was an ice cream cafe we went to at Sixth Avenue, back in our JC days before it bowed out of Singapore a few years ago. There was next to no mention of Venezia on google and I was also unable to find any useful logos of the establishment either! So that idea was scrapped. Next, there was the plan to create big cut-outs of either Monsta X or VIXX members who would seem ‘genuinely happy for the proposal’.. but once again, let down by google, as the images I managed to find were either too pixelated or not relevant enough. Sadly, that idea flopped too. In the end, I decided to go for a more normal but personal decor to surprise bby :)
Truthfully, there were many chances to surprise-propose bby, especially our most recent staycation at Park Royal Marina Bay, but I didn’t feel that I was ready to do it.. so I delayed it till our big dinner on July 10th. Why July 10th? SAF had the brilliant idea to schedule my ICT during our actual 10th anniversary date, so we decided that we would have our anniversary dinner earlier. Furthermore, after Gyu Bar, we decided that we could and wanted to try more fine dining. After much research and deliberation (between Whitegrass and Buona Terra), we finally went for Whitegrass, which had decidedly nicer deco and ambiance.
The weekend before the 10th, bby suddenly suggested that after our big dinner, maybe we should go for a drive. This gave me a great idea - if i drove, this meant that she would have to come stay over, and then I would definitely be able to surprise-propose to her! I very easily agreed with her suggestion and went for a slightly higher-end car, an Audi. Thankfully, this rental was not far from my place and the rental wasn’t that much higher than the Honda Fit before. So far, all was going to plan. Then, we also decided that since we would be getting a car, we could travel slightly further out, eg. the East. We decided to go to Playground Ragdolls, which would be our first interactions with our dream pet for our new house!
I ordered a huge preserved flower bouquet beforehand as well as a tiny flower-box, to be delivered on the July 9th, which was also my mum’s birthday. She requested to have chilli crabs for dinner, which my bro bought from Jumbo seafood. We had a scrumptious dinner that night, but extremely regrefully, I couldn’t invite bby to come over, because it would mean that she would see all the flowers and thus ruin the entire event.
On the day itself
On the 10th, coincidentally, I had to take up a mover role, to help my bro move some of his guo-da-li stuff to his fiancee’s place in Pasir Ris in the morning. It was a very simple job that took up the bulk of my Saturday morning. After lunch, he sent me back and I quickly completed the deco and freshened up before leaving at 4pm to collect the car.
Leaving at 4pm was an overestimation of the travelling time, but also to prevent any lateness. I reached the rental car location at about 445pm but could not find the car at all. Confused, i called the host and she was quite pekcek to inform me that I was 15 mins early.. i went ‘oops’ and apologised for my kiasu-ness. At least she wasn’t overly judgey about it. I took over the car and quickly got on my way to Lakeside. Along the way, the aircon vent handphone holder kept dropping everytime I made my way over a particularly high bump as the Audi aircon vent was different from the normal aircon vents i was used to, with horizontal panes. Other than the handphone holder dropping from time to time, the drive to Jurong was pretty smooth.
I picked bby up at about 5pm and she surprised me with another street branded shirt, endorsed by Hyungwon of Monsta X. She even gifted me with a picture of him wearing the exact same shirt! I gifted her with the small flower-box and inwardly laughed as she whined about receiving another flower.. inside i was like ‘lol, wait till you get the one at night’. We drove off from Jurong to City Hall, which was supposed to get us to Chijmes in 25 mins?
Oops, we will be so early! But in the end we spent more than 35 mins on the road, because google maps was being a bitch and not giving the correct directions and we had to circle round Chijmes twice because we couldn’t enter the place! Finally, we decided to follow the signs strictly and we managed to enter the Chijmes carpark at last. We wandered around Chijmes for awhile and took some pictures. I helped her take some pictures that she was actually satisfied with!!!! SDNJIADBNAIKFAUFAKLFDNA!!!
After inwardly celebrating alone, we entered Whitegrass. Overall, the food was nothing to brag about, though the service was very good. Like what bby has said, the best things about the meal were the breads and the specially made financier by the Japanese Chef. The Chef came out to greet us and even wished us a happy anniversary followed by a picture of us hehe.
Full af, we decided to drive to Sentosa cove to sneak a peek at the rich people but nope, not allowed to ba long long go in, so we rerouted to Palawan beach instead. well well well, no entry into the beach. hur. oh well, time to head home. Inside my mind was running in all directions, almost 1.5y in the making, it’s finally gona be time!!
We reached and parked in less than 30 mins and quickly made our way back home.. only upon reaching my doorstep that i realised i left my keys in the flower-box inside the car.. luckily my dad was still awake to open the door for us.
Once in, we discovered my room door was closed and i let her enter first. Once she sweeped her eyes around the room, i panicked a little and just grabbed the ring and knelt down. I was entirely FLUSTERED and my mind was blanked out. haha, i lost all sequence of events. i knelt at an awkward angle and i wanted to switch knees, at which point, bby looked down and saw me kneeling on both knees (facepalm ttm). but okay, eventually it got sorted out and we took some pictures, with creative advice from my fiancee (^^). i also told her the entire journey from the ring all the way to present time, honestly, without hiding anything. Tbh, i wanted to make it hella grand but I missed out on some deco and by the time i discovered, it was too late to order again. UGHHH. When we went off to bathe, it was already about 1am and we had an early morning ahead. We both went to sleep happy hehe. (i got myself a ring catto)
Ragdolls all day, err’ day
I woke up next to bby catto who suddenly wrapped me up in the blankets and took a picture of me -.-
anyways, after a quick breakfast, i wore bby’s present and went out. We went some place first, before heading to La Fez in the East. It was a Morrocan restaurant which had a very pink and cutesy exterior. The food was not bad as well, the bby ordered Shakshuka while I ordered the Lamb Shwarma. Not entirely filling but good enough for me!
Next we set off for Playground Ragdolls.. but i think i missed a turn somewhere so we just parked at a nearby carpark instead. We wanted to walk to Tigerlily Pattiserie but changed our minds to head to Birds of Paradise nearby instead, since bby has been wanting to eat it. and hohoho, dark skies ahead started to thunder and shortly after rain poured down. We didn’t bring umbrella and neither were there any umbrella in the rental car.. so we decided to brave the rain. The initial rain was pretty manageable, a slightly heavy drizzle but manageable. The moment we were halfway to the next shelter however, it poured. and poured. and poured. Needless to say, we were both drenched.. and bby was wearing her Tory Burch too... nevertheless, we persevered and reached Birds of Paradise and got our ice cream too! (along the way we passed a mama shop and bought a $6 umbrella) We got roasted sesame and sea salt hojicha. Tbh, both were good but as we were practically wolfing the ice cream down and the quantity was really alot, the ice cream became pretty jelat after awhile. For the first time in a long long while, we threw away ice cream. Yes, bby was pretty horrible for throwing away ice cream, especially when she was the one who proclaimed she loved it.
With our new umbrella, we eventually made our way back the way we came, dry this time, towards Playground Ragdolls! Since we were pretty early, we waited outside for a short while, before the host let us in. and wow, once in, we were greeted by 2 curious little Singapuras. At first glance, they looked like regular strays but on a closer look, they had a kind of refined quality that really separated them from typical strays. And then as the host continued her briefing, our eyes strayed to the ragdolls. OMGGGG all so floof and cute!! Bby and I settled down near the couch and started playing with an 8 month old female kitto. and omg she was so playful!! Immediate want! While playing, we didn’t forget to enquire more about the purchase process and also listened in on the other customers’ queries as well. 1 hour passed all too quickly, and it came time to bid farewell to the cattoes.
On the way back to the car, bby remarked that she was a little peckish, so we decided to head to a drive-thru at marine parade.. but once there, no drive-thru to be seen!!! We stopped at the passenger waiting area for awhile to research but to no avail. Eventually we gave up and I drove her back to her house.
At her block, I helped to carry all the barang barang back up and I remarked to her that I was going to call her parents ‘Mother’ and ‘Father’ to hint them that I proposed. And I did, but apparently, only her mum caught it. Her dad didn’t, sadly. Unfortunately, I needed to rush back to return the car, so i couldn’t stay to explain further (Sorry Father, i will explain the next time i’m there!)
Anyways, I drove back to return the car and swiftly parked. The owner ‘received’ back the car without much incident also. Aaaaand that concludes mine and bby’s eventful weekend, in which we both had our relationship statuses changed from boyfriend-girlfriend to fiance-fiancee ^^.
Honestly, I do regret not getting actual flowers for you back in 2011.. but lol, the virtual flowers confession did make our relationship more interesting though haha. Yet another interesting tale that we can tell our kids next time also. I feel so happy as I recount the entire experience and am so glad that it succeeded. This sat, we will be going to re-size the engagement ring so that bby will wear the ring for events soon!! can’t wait!!

You believe you will get rich trading – You have wild dreams of hitting it big, finding some magic indicator or system that will make you rich. I can guarantee 99% of people who attempt trading will never ever make consistent profit, let alone get rich.
You believe trading is a 2 hour a day or less expedition – and why not, ‘VP of No Nonsense Forex’ who proclaims he is a Professional Prop Trader with zero evidence, says he only trades 15 minutes a day.
You are a retail trader with a price and time chart – all you have is price and time on a chart yet you are proclaiming where “liquidity” is sitting or any other myriad of ‘Michael Huddlestone ICT’ nonsense you can spout. You are up against machines and teams of people with far more capital and resources than you – most aren’t trading charts FYI.
Your account size is $50-$100,000 – sorry sweetcheeks you are going to need more than this to go full time. No really, you do. Social Media is awash of gamblers on micro accounts claiming 200% for the month – showing their pretty Myfxbook one day chart – they are not trading for a living.
You spend all your time on technical analysis – ever head of risk management and psychology? – both far more important than technical analysis yet people spend all their time discussing price.
You chase price round a chart – You have no plan, you simply chase price up and down and around the screen. This is a recipe for disaster. Get a plan or stick to your 9-5.
You have no concept of risk management – if you go all in when you think it will turn, its called gambling. Anything above 1%-3% risk is likely to be gambling and you will blow up in the long run.
You are emotionally unstable or have a low emotional intelligence (emotional quotient) and cannot control your discipline – this is going to be an uphill struggle. Trading is a psychological game of risk.
You cannot accept you are simply a problem/pathalogical gambler – You have lost thousands, you have spent years trying to ‘crack it’ – guess what? You never will.
You think or pretend you know it all – there are people who know far, far more than you and me – posting pretty charts on Tradingview and Social Media when secretly your trading execution absolutely sucks… Book a date with reality. Bonus points for anyone 17-25 that trades a micro/demo account for under 2 years, posting mt4 mobile screenshots on social media calling themselves a ‘trader’ as a status thing to show how cool you are…. We all know the truth.

Everything under "General" for Caleb and Kaidan. :)
from this list
ROFL  So, I’ve got you hooked on them too???  ;)
Okay, let’s see here ...
1. Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?
Flip a coin.  Technically, you could say Kaidan ‘initiated’ it because he was tasked with bringing Caleb’s belongings off the SSV London to him at the hospital on Arcturus when the ship docked a couple months after Akuze.  On the other hand, Caleb is the one who insists on buying him a drink after they leave the hospital and he is heading to catch a shuttle back to Earth to Rio for ICT.  So, yeah, six-and-one-half-dozen-of-the-other.  They stay in contact after that, but not very often, until they end up on the SR1 together.
As for how it went?  There wasn’t a whole lot of time for much to happen:  just enough to get a round of drinks and for Caleb to toast to Kaidan’s health, down it and rush off to catch his flight.  (okay, maybe they have a FEW minutes to chat :P )  Pretty unremarkable, actually.  Like I said, they do stay in touch, run into each other a couple of times in the intervening years, and little by little they get to know one another better.  By the time they get to the SR1, they have a decent understanding of the other; grounds to call one another ‘friends’ and not just ‘acquaintances’.
Now, if you’re talking a more personal relationship?  That happens once the war starts.  Post Clone-Incident, Kaidan stops by the apartment to pick up something he left behind, he and Caleb have a beer together, talk, and “stuff” happens.  By “stuff” I mean Caleb let’s Kaidan know he’s interested, Kaidan lets Caleb know he’s interested and .. well ... yeah.  There ya go. :P
2. Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like?
answered here
3. What was their first kiss like?
Let’s see if this answers the question:
He forces himself to step closer until only a few inches separate them.  Cautiously, he searches Kaidan’s face, finds nothing but encouragement and support. He hesitates one last time, running a hand through his hair.  “Kaidan, I –.”
The smile widens, perhaps a hint of smugness in it but nothing ill-intentioned, as he replies, “Your call, Shepard.  We’ll do this however you want or not at all.”
Your call. The suggestion leaves Caleb shuddering, his eyes closing tight.  He knows. By all that’s holy, he KNOWS. “Stay,” he rasps, pleadingly. It’s all he can manage.
Warmth tickles along his cheek as Kaidan trails his fingers along his jaw.  Caleb cannot stop himself from leaning toward the touch.  “You’re sure?” Kaidan breathes.
“Yes.”
In less than a heartbeat, Kaidan closes the distance, his lips covering Caleb’s.  His touch is slow but sure, gentle but firm, and Caleb’s chest tightens.  Awkwardly, he wraps an arm around his shoulders, tugging him closer, unable or unwilling to release him.  Time losing meaning until Kaidan breaks the kiss.  Both of them, Caleb notices immediately, have trouble catching their breath, and in Kaidan’s eyes he sees curiosity as he waits …
4. Were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)?
The only ‘first’ involved for them is that falling in love with Kaidan is the first time that Caleb realizes he is bisexual.  Now, love as a teenager is far different from love as an adult, and what he feels for Kaidan is far more than anything he’s ever felt before, so in a sense Kaidan is his ‘first’ real love, but he did care for Ciara and Moira, too, in his own way, and he wouldn’t cheapen that.  Basically, they are each other’s ‘only’ from the moment they decide to pursue a relationship.  How does that sound?
5. What’s their height difference? Age difference?
Hmm ... They are about the same height I think, whatever difference there is, it’s minimal and Caleb certainly doesn’t care about it.  Neither does Kaidan.
As for age difference?  Technically it’s three years, according to Caleb’s records (despite the 2 years he was ‘dead’).  However, Caleb doesn’t know how old he really is.  It could be a wider gap, it could be a narrower one.  He doesn’t know for sure ... (yet .....) :P
6. What’s their relationship with each other’s families?
Okay, very briefly, Caleb gets the chance to meet Kaidan’s parents post ME1.  They’re back in Vancouver, following up with Command after the Battle of the Citadel.  Caleb is told that Ashley’s name has been placed on the memorial to the fallen, so he goes to pay his respects (and also meets Abby Williams who will play into the future stories).  Sometime later, Kaidan shows up and he’s with his parents.  They go out for drinks and a chat and spend a bit of time together.  That’s the only time Caleb meets Kaidan’s dad until ... SEE THIS POST.  Caleb gets along very well with Kaidan’s mom, too.
Now, as for Kaidan, since Caleb has no real ‘family’ to speak of, we’ll refer to the Reds, Coats and Abby Williams as they are the closest thing to family he has.  (Honestly, if you ask Caleb, he’d say his family consists of Kaidan, the kids, Kaidan’s parents, Coats, Abby and the Reds in that order).  For the most part, Kaidan likes the former Reds.  There are a couple of exceptions, but SPOILER, so not going to say just yet.  He adores the kids as well.  Coats ... I’m not sure of yet because he and Kaidan started chatting at me earlier this evening.  I have to see where that goes first.  Abby, Kaidan adores as much as he did Ashley.
7. Who takes the lead in social situations?
Depends on the situation and who is involved.  I’d say it’s about an even 50/50 split.
8. Who gets jealous easier?
LOL  OMG I laughed at this one for a good three minutes solid, don’t ask me why.
I have to say I /think/ it’s Kaidan.  Caleb ... just has no reason to be jealous?  By the time they get together, the way they get together, he trusts Kaidan with all that he is - and that’s saying A LOT.  Trust is a big deal for Caleb, and when he gives it to Kaidan, it’s like tossing the key out the window because he just doesn’t need it anymore, that’s how secure he feels with him.  Kaidan, on the other hand, there is a little jealousy at least.  Definitely with Coats, possibly with Abby, too.  That I need to play with a bit more.  I do know that any jealousy of Abby comes from the fact that she is there for Caleb in ME2 timeline events when Kaidan isn’t.  As for Coats, it deals with the fact that he and Shepard have been best friends for so damned long.

You've been visited by the random OC question fairy! :D ~☆
Pick five of your character's most influential milestones (moving away from home, a first kiss, a death, etc.). Why and how did these milestones affect your character?
Thank you for the question! Once again I am answering for Allison Shepard as she’s the only MC I really have fleshed out. I sat down to write out her most influential milestones and narrowed it down to the five I felt would be most interesting. In chronological order:
1. Finding out she was a latent biotic and suddenly developing biotic abilities at the age of sixteen 2. Meeting her first boyfriend, Finn
After she was expelled for punching and injuring another student, and moving to a different human colony, she enrolls in a new school and meets Finn on her first day there:
A teen boy slouched casually against the wall opposite the office, moving to stand up when Allison shut the door behind her. His dark hair flopped down into his bright blue eyes as he moved, his hand almost continually going up to move it out of the way.
"Finnegan Osmani. Call me Finn," he said once he was close enough, holding a hand out. Allison took it and gave a brief shake before she pulled back. "You're that new kid, right?"
"I am," Allison said, turning and looking around. "I hear you’re my chaperone."
Finn laughed. "That's one way of putting it. Hey, rumours going around; you are a biotic, right?"
"Sure am," Allison said, turning back to look at Finn with a cool glare. "You gonna make something of it?"
"Nope." Finn grinned. "My lil sis is a biotic, she'll love to meet you."
Allison smiled herself.
Maybe introductions weren't going to be so bad.
Outside of family everyone treated Aliison and her twin brother Elliot like a ticking time bomb. Finn was the first one to fully embrace who she was, biotics and all. This was in part because of his younger sister also being a biotic, so he had some knowledge of what being a biotic meant.
Walking in to that new school, she had put her hair up and left her amp fully visible - she didn’t care what anyone thought of her, whispered about her. Hating her for being a biotic was the same as hating her for having green eyes, and if it meant she rounded out high school as the ostracised creepy biotic whom no one talked to...well, she didn’t care.
And then Finnegan showed her that, no, not everyone was going to act like that. Some people would be accepting of who she was, biotics and all.
Again, this has gotten really long so the rest is under a cut!
3. Enlisting in the Alliance 4. Getting dumped by Finn 5. Defending Elysium from pirates and slavers 6. Being awarded the Star of Terra for her actions on Elysium
Allison didn’t do anything special on Elysium. She didn’t do anything more than any other marine would have done (and in fact some of them willingly laid down their lives so that others could be saved). Being hailed as the Hero of Elysium is an aggravating and unnecessary epithet, and doubly so when her status as a biotic soldier is emphasised.
(This does create positive associations with biotics so it’s at least something but, again, she’s an average biotic. Nothing special. Stop advertising it on recruitment posters so much.)
She receives the Star of Terra (among others: namely her officer commission, invitation to ICT school, and a special commendation) for her actions, but despite all the pomp and circumstance, unless she needs to wear it it stays hidden away in its box in storage.
It doesn’t help that she’s the daughter of Hannah Shepard, well-regarded veteran of the First Contact War. People expected a lot from Allison, and barely four years since enrolling in the Alliance, they had humanity’s newest hero on their hands. She brushes off most applauds about her status; they take it as her being modest, she intends it as a stop bothering me about it but she can’t not keep it.
(This does later cause a bit of friction between Allison and Ashley later, but that is 8-9 years later in the timeline.)
7. Being invited to participate in the Interplanetary Combatives Training course 8. The untimely death of her paternal grandfather In the late 22nd century, the average life expectancy for humans is around 120, with some individuals reaching 150 years old.
As such, Allison’s paternal grandfather dying in his early nineties was a shock to all. It occurs in the middle of Allison’s ICT learning, and as a result it delays her graduation by a year. Completing ICT can be done in a year, but Allison spread it out a little because she wanted to pace herself - being one of the first biotics invited into the program, she didn’t want to crash and burn (despite there being no shame in being able to complete the first rank, she personally would have hated having done so).
Her grandfather’s death causes her to step back and reevaluate things a little. She idolised her grandfather so much (I have an idea for an art piece when Allison was about eight years old, on the back porch of her grandfather’s house; Allison is pulling a face because she and her grandfather are eating liquorice; she despises it but her grandfather adores it, and because he adores it she reckons that she must also adore it) and losing him punches a hole in her career plans.
She stays in the Alliance (not much else for a biotic to do, and her family going back many generations has been military, so she doesn’t quite know what else to do) but she misses him for a long time. 9. Completing her Interplanetary Combatives Training course and being awarded N7 rank 10. Accidentally interfacing with the prothean beacon on Eden Prime and getting the first glimpse of the impending Reaper invasion 11. Becoming a Spectre, part of the Citadel's specops group 12. Rescuing both Kaidan and Ashley from the near-doom mission on Virmire 13. Allowing herself to fall in love with Kaidan This harkens back to Finn and him seeing her as a whole. For Allison, being in the Alliance and having a relationship doesn’t mesh - initially she’s working on her career, aiming to get her officer’s commission, then Elysium happens and people are more interested in her as Commander Shepard, Hero of Elysium than they are of Allison.
Kaidan’s different. Heck, all of the Normandy crew are different (barring those who knew her prior like Anderson and Adams) - while they respect her as their XO/CO, they don’t idolise her like other people she’s met. She can pull off heroic feats and achieve the near-impossible, but a large part of that is down to her crew and how they are all able to work together.
But Kaidan sees beyond rank, sees beyond medals, sees beyond her service history, and does indeed see Allison, the person. Admittedly at the point in time this occurs, Allison hasn’t seen how bad things can get, and she doesn’t know how much of a rock Kaidan will be to her, but to realise that he loves her, the entirety of her, and not the hero plastered across the recruitment vids, or the thin line between reverence and rejection biotics often get.
But they’re military, she’s his CO and he’s her HOMD. She’s gotten a lot of leniency running as a Spectre ship but she still answers to the Alliance. Fraternization is not allowed, and so they push their feelings to the back once the Citadel is saved and Saren and Sovereign are killed. Kaidan requests to be given a new posting, a space halfway across the galaxy, given a few months and then start an official, public relationship, and allow Allison a shot at a normal romantic relationship. 14. Dying and being ressurected 15. Finding out that the Collectors are protheans, enslaved and mutated by the Reapers 16. Leading a team through the Omega 4 relay, a place where no one had returned from, to destroy the collector base and returning victorious 17. Blowing up a mass relay in batarian space, killing over 300k batarians and being put under house arrest 18. Almost losing Kaidan after an ambush on Mars 19. Uniting the galaxy against the Reapers and delivering the killing blow, ending their message for ever 20. Waking up to a post-Reaper galaxy with both physical and mental injuries, and learning how to manage with those
Allison wakes up in a hospital bed for the second time in her life after a major battle and she almost cries. Let me rest, she thinks, fearing that Cerberus has gotten to her again and they’ve rebuilt her again to go rogue and save the galaxy again. Hasn’t she earned her rest?
Well, yes. She has.
She’s in a hospital in London, her mother at her bedside as medics struggle to sedate her, worried that Allison will injure herself more without it. Miranda, the one who rebuilt her after the Collector attack, is leading the team. Allison is officially awoken from the induced coma/sedation about a month later and told what happened.
She lost her lower left leg, replaced with a prosthesis in the short term and a tissue cloned leg in the long term. One arm was dislocated, the other broken; a scar now bisects her face from forehead to nose, before curving around her cheekbone to her ear.
The Normandy has disappeared, no one knows where her or her crew are, including Kaidan - whom she had married just hours before the final assault against the Reapers.
Allison gets a multitude of diagnoses - acute stress disorder, anxiety, depression, panic attacks. Physically she recovers without issue, though she considers the clone tissue leg a waste (I can manage just fine on a prosthesis thank you) when there are others around who could benefit from the resources used on her.
But she’s got one more epithet to add to her collection - saviour of the galaxy, and a one-of-a-kind medal to accompany that. Her immediate family survived - her parents, her twin brother, her younger sister. And somehow Kaidan and nearly everyone on the Normandy survives too, reunited about three months after Allison officially wakes up.
But she struggles with her mental health, lashing out at Kaidan for his idea to take her to inner British Columbia, to his family’s orchard. Logically she knows it’s the best idea - remote and peaceful - but her brain rebels, another choice made for her, another change to her life that she has no control over.
But she apologises, rests, and recovers. Takes up Anderson’s apartment on the Citadel when it’s habitable once again and considers, maybe, retiring from the Alliance and pursuing a normal life.
Maybe.
(It doesn’t stay that way for long.) 21. Choosing to get pregnant and raising children with Kaidan

Operation Eve, Part II: Secondary Assessment
Scenario
In Part I, Elyssa determined that her patient Babak, who fell off a cliff, isn’t about to die before her eyes, so now she begins her secondary assessment. First, she palpates his skull; checks behind his ears, under his eyes, and his pupils; and looks up his nose for secretions. Then, she gently presses against every part of his body, squeezing limbs with two hands and rolling a flat palm along all four quadrants of his abdomen.
Next, she takes and writes down his pulse. She checks that he has a radial pulse, which he does, and assumes that means his blood pressure is more or less okay. Finally, she counts how many times he breathes in a minute and writes that down as well.
She guides the friend on top of the cliff down to safety and asks for a SAMPLE history of her patient. When she gets to P, she strikes gold–she knows how she needs to help her patient.
Secondary Assessment
The secondary assessment is composed of three parts: 1) head-to-toe exam, 2) vitals, and 3) SAMPLE history.
Head-to-Toe Exam
During the head-to-toe exam, the responder tries to touch / look at every part of the patient. Your character doesn’t need to be an expert to perform one. They’re looking for some pretty obvious stuff, like, say, a bone sticking out of the body, a limb that’s bent wrong, or the patient yelling “ow ow ow!” when they touch that spot. Your character should also note any crepitus, which is a crunchy feeling when they press on a spot—in the words of Mod N’s instructor: “you’ll know it when you feel it.”
We don’t solve any problems during this stage—we’re not making a splint or anything until we’re finished, although I suppose if you found an arterial bleed at this stage, you’d treat that, but really, you should’ve noticed the growing pool of blood before now. There’s two exceptions to the No Problem Solving rule. One, if something feels weird or hurts, the responder should expose it to skin level. That’s how they can spot things like the bones sticking out or open wounds. Two, if a patient says “ow ow ow!” when you touch a spot, you should—shocker—stop touching that spot. (Spoiler: this includes when reducing dislocations! If your patient doesn’t want you jamming their shoulder around like that, you should stop! I’m looking at you, every movie with a shoulder dislocation in it).
If your character is a little more ~advanced~ they can look for Battle’s sign. Yes, that apostrophe is in the correct spot—some guy had the great fortune of being named Battle and he noticed that people with traumatic brain injuries often show characteristic bruising behind the ears. Not only does your character look like a real pro checking behind the ears, they will sound like a total badass if they start throwing around the phrase “Battle’s sign.” (Indeed, there’s nothing wrong with a character who just talks about Battle’s sign all day long—wait, I’m hearing that apparently there might be something wrong with a character like that… if you’re a coward). Have your responder take a gander at the bags underneath their patient’s eyes too—raccoon eyes can also indicate brain injury.
Since we’re already looking at the eyes, why not check out those pupils—here at ICT we try to support all types of pupils, but if they are differently sized, don’t respond to light, or not round, this is a cause for alarm. Why not have your character throw in a peek into the ears, just to check for any secretions too? Ears, you may have noticed, are generally dry. Seeing any liquid, of any color, leaking out of the ear is what we call a Bad Sign. The two most common ear secretions are blood (not ideal) and cerebrospinal fluid (very bad). If your character sees only red, they cannot breathe a sigh of relief because CSF has no color and almost always comes with blood. So, if you see blood, assume bad.
Vitals
There are three vitals that WFRs care about: pulse, breathing, and brain. Wise readers will see that these line up with our three critical systems from the last post, because for the most part, in the wilderness, we only care about three organ systems: the circulatory system, respiratory system, and nervous system. A doctor can mess around with livers and kidneys later.
Vital signs are the closest thing we have to x-ray vision in the wilderness. We want to know what your three (important) organs are doing and this is the best way to find out.
A normal pulse range is 60 – 90, higher for kids or people who just exercised. In general, we care about trends over time, so if the pulse started at 105 but stayed there for five hours, this isn’t too worrying. At the very least, your patient isn’t getting worse. If the pulse starts at a healthy 60 and then skyrockets to 105 and then plummets to to 20, this indicates the patient is probably dying.
A normal breathing range is 12 – 20 breaths per minute. Regardless of the number of breaths per minute, turning blue is not normal. A top secret trick your character might know if they have some training is to take breaths while keeping your finger on your patient’s pulse. As humans, if we think someone is paying attention to our breathing, we naturally start breathing weird. So, it’s better to let the patient think we’re still getting the pulse while we count breaths.
And for brain, your character can just check in on AVPU every so often to see if the patient is getting worse.
If you are a ~fancy~ WFR, you might also take blood pressure in the field.
Remember: normal is relative. If your character’s pulse is 40, but they say that’s totally normal for them, your responder would probably not be that worried.
SAMPLE History
Most medical problems cannot simply be solved by looking at the body. We need to ask the patient. Information like “I have crushing chest pain and, hey look, my doctor prescribed me nitro for just this eventuality,” or “I have terrible stomach and arm pain and also I am pregnant,” or “I have had many seizures before and this is what I need you to do to feel better” is game-changing, and the patient is the gate-keeper.
Let’s start with the S: Symptoms. This one’s easy: what hurts most? When did that start? Does anything make it better or worse? How would you describe this pain? (Mod N’s favorite question: If you had to make feel the same pain you are, what would you have to to do to me?) Anything else bothering you? Your character might remember what to ask by running through the acronym OPQRST, or they might just go with the flow in the moment.
Allergies. Another easy one: are you allergic to anything? What happens if you come into with that allergen? Is there any chance you came into contact with it recently?
Medication. While it is not the job of the EMT or WFR to keep track of medication interactions or prescribe anything, it’s important to know if your patient has medication that is useful in this situation or recently started or stopped medication. In one particularly embarrassing exercise, I spent about 10 minutes doing what was, in my defense, excellent PROP with someone having an asthma attack without once asking her if, perchance, she had an inhaler nearby. Don’t be like Mod E, folks—always ask if there’s an inhaler nearby.
Past Pertinent History. Has this every happened before? If your patient says yes, boom! We’ve suddenly got a subject matter expert on scene. We also want to hit on the DASH here: Diabetes, Asthma, Seizures or Stroke, and Heart Conditions. It never hurts to know your patient has diabetes. Indeed, if your character is travelling into the wilderness with someone, they may ask about the DASH before setting out.
Last ins and outs. When did you last eat and drink? How much and what? When did you last poop and pee? Was it… pretty normal for you? (Note: there is no non-awkward way to ask a stranger you found in the woods what their last bowel movement looked like).
If you think it’s relevant, when did you last menstruate? And let’s all remember, we don’t have x-ray vision, so the only way to rule out pregnancy is to ask. (Yes, even the guy with the big bushy beard—you can’t see his organs, so you don’t know if he has a uterus. If you can see his organs, what the heck are you taking a SAMPLE history for? You should be on the phone calling in a helicopter stat).
Events leading up to injury. What happened? With follow-up questions as necessary.
Scenario
“He has diabetes?” Elyssa asks Babak’s friend.
“Yeah, and he said he was feeling dizzy and light-headed before he fell.”
Elyssa, a seasoned professional, carries packets of sugar with her for just such a situation. She gently rubs them into Babak’s lips, monitoring his airway to make sure he doesn’t choke. 15 minutes later, Babak is sitting up and talking, and Elyssa can work with him and his friend on an evacuation plan.
