First time I went out eating alone in Japan.
When I went there in 2017, I almost exclusively lived off conbini food, apart from the few times a friend joined me, because I was too anxious to enter a restaurant alone. Last year I finally gathered all my courage. It was "just" Ichiran, so it was minimal social interactions, but baby steps are still steps, right?

And so ends Dragon Kid’s Calbee sponsorship, looks like it’s been replaced with the absolutely mid potato sticks that Yusuke Kitagawa is so fond of (which is funny because Pao-Lin kind of looks like a Chinese Chie Satonaka).

Day 9 - Japan Blog - 15 February 2024 Legoland and Shinkansen to Kyoto Today is theme park day!! It was going to be Legoland and Shinkansen Museum but we decided to just do Legoland annnndddd it was a super let down. I wouldn’t go there again, or recommend it to anyone … I’ve been to the one Legoland in San Diego and I thought that one was “meh” but this was really bad. The mini land/world (I can’t remember what it was called) was cool… and the Lego City was good and the service was amazing. But yeah, big meh. The food at Legoland sucked brick. Like … actual. I was dying to try the Lego Chips because, well LOOK AT THEM! SO CUTE! But -- Not only did it taste like cardboard, but it also made me sick. So, yeah. That takes me Legoland rating to a 2/10. 😔
We had to catch the train to Kyoto and it was raining so we thought to get a taxi instead of rushing … then the taxi was SO SLOW (we could have walked…) which stressed me out, overwhelmed me, and I ended up having a vulnerable moment on the train which ended up with me having a chronic illness flare and I had to nap and take it easy for the afternoon and evening.
However, I decided that it was going to be easy street tonight -- we went to Ichiran for dinner and that makes me happy. I love our hotel. I usually stay at the Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo. Its close enough to Gion that you only need to catch one train... and its right in the middle of Kawaramachi Street. The room has a SHOWER ROOM which is the main reason I wanted to stay in this hotel again and I found out there is a "lounge" on the 6th floor with free soft drink!! Amazing.

OJT EATS | Ichiran Ramen Shibuya
Tumblr media
You can't go to Japan and not have copious amounts of ramen. Ask anyone where they should go for ramen in Tokyo and we're willing to bet that it won't take long for them to come up with Ichiran. It has expanded to a number of countries now but it's still not quite the same as having it in Japan. We couldn't resist a trip down there this time.
Tumblr media
Now, what Ichiran is known for is just how perfect it is for solo diners. In fact, it is designed so that each diner has their own little booth with a little hatch to the kitchen to receive your ramen from. You fill out a little form to indicate what options you want (on top of what you actually want as that's covered by the vending machine at the entrance).

This branch has gone even further to help make sure you don't have to talk to anyone by including these wooden boards with the most common requests and questions on them.

Onto the food. First up was a plate of char siu. This was so good! This place is perfect for some food after drinks and this fits into that so well. It's salty, meaty and just so tasty!
Tumblr media
Now the ramen. This was the standard tonkotsu with a little bit of spice. There's something about Ichiran that just hits the spot. It is definitely an ideal post drinks meal but even without having had a few, it's just an incredibly tasty bowl of ramen. It's lovely and rich with an incredible depth of flavour.
Tumblr media
This other bowl of ramen we had was similar but not quite as rich as the tonkotsu. Nevertheless, it was still delicious and I'd definitely recommend getting an extra egg.
All in all, Ichiran is a fun little experience eating in your own solitary booth. It's also really good ramen so it's pretty much win win. Our recommendation is that you make it a after drinks meal as it really does hit the spot after some drinks!

A bowl of Ramen from Japan’s famous Ichiran Ramen, the first ramen shop to have ever received a Michelin Star!⭐️
This was one of the more touristy places on my Japan bucket list and I was super excited to try it since I had heard nothing but good reviews. I initially discovered this chain from popular TikTok videos I had seen that highly praised their ramen and branded the shop as “an introverts paradise.” The main selling point I saw online was that it was great for tourists and even better for introverts because you pay for your ramen using a self service machine, fill out your order on a sheet of paper, and then seat yourself in one of their small one-person booths, so no human interaction or Japanese required.
I knew that because of the chain’s major popularity, there would undoubtedly be a wait, so to avoid that I thought it would be a good idea to go a couple hours before they closed, hoping it would be slower. To my surprise, they were still very much packed. After I had paid and wrote my order down, I was left waiting in line for about thirty minutes and was then show to one of the small “private” booths I had heard so much about. I found myself sitting in between multiple strangers, some only a couple inches away from me. So the privacy aspect I was looking forward to was immediately shot down. While waiting for my ramen, the server tried asking me questions about my order, and with my very limited Japanese I felt extremely embarrassed because I had no idea what they were trying to ask me, so right then and there, the not needing to understand/speak Japanese aspect was also proven untrue. After a little more waiting, I received my bowl of ramen but I appeared to be the only one left in the restaurant. One of the servers politely asked if I could eat faster as they were about to close, which was completely understandable. So out of respect for the employees time, I had to stressfully speed eat the ramen I had waited so long for.
The ramen was super tasty and the employees were all very kind, but I found it really interesting just how much social media likes to glorify touristy places such as Ichiran. I’m really glad I got to try it at least once but if I wanted a nice bowl of ramen, next time, I’d rather go to the small shop next to our hotel.

Sojourn to the OG Ichiran Tonkotsu Ramen main shop in Hakata to enjoy what many consider the pinnacle of Fukuoka's pork bone style ramen. It did not disappoint. Ichiran is special because of their gentle yet insanely aromatic Tonkotsu Broth, Their solo dining booth system where you never talk to or see the staff, and the fact thatthe building looks like a Final Fight boss battle stage.
