Wait, Vane is younger than Lancelot? I guess it makes sense, but still. Did not expect that. Also, WHAT? I thought Arthur and Mordred would be like 15, 16??? Sure, they occasionally act younger than that, but, wow. They truly are the babiest of babies. How dare Gbf keep putting them in awful situations >:(
HE ISSSSS
nonny i'm about to make your day, look at child Lancelot and Vane from the manga adaptation::::::
Tumblr media
this is the most important image of all time, to me.
and if you look a little closely on the uncap of their summer Vane DOES look younger. Or maybe it's just bc i know he's younger.
Tumblr media
i could SWEAR there's a story or two where Lancelot actually joke about how, at some point, Vane was smaller and cuter than him, and what the hell happened, while Vane pouts because he's so happy to be strong now to protect everyone.
i think i recall reading them becoming friends because Vane baked a cake for Lancelot on his birthday, but he was too shy to approach him, so Lancelot had to make a move to get his cake, and Vane mentioned he was just worried because Lancelot looked lonely. but i can't recall for the life of mine where i read it. did i imagine it. who knows.
AND YEAH THE ARTHUR AND MORDRED THING. Honestly i had them in my mind at 15, i keep forgetting. Nowadays they're 14 (bc currently the Dragon Knights saga have been going on for one year in game time), but yeah, they're just kids!! they're little boys!!! just babies!!! who are going through hell like holy shit kids shouldn't have that many death experience before they turn 14 granblue what tHE FUCK.
so yeah. granblue's ages huh!

.....
y'know how the dragon knights are nicknamed "4 kishi" in Japanese, which is why i use this term right (it's like, 4 knights normally)
i was reading a granblue tweet about them with google translation on and it translated "4kishi" as "Four Horsemen" which.....
considering we just got the info that the big final beast to defeat on the island comes from the book of Revelation this made me stop in my tracks
especially after we were just discussing how much Vane is associated to Death (as in, everyone around him dies, he died in an alt timeline, he sees ghosts ect)
i was thinking any of the other three associations could be stretches but
Percival is someone who, in every way, works dearly to eradicate the concept of War. he's been followed by the war that took his mother, the wars his father started and brother continued, the war Lamorak is part of ect... and he is associated to the color red, which is the one of the War Horseman.
Then Pestilance is associated to the color white, and Famine to the color black, which both are Lancelot and Siegfried's colors, as the respective leaders of the White and Black Dragons, and the colors of their armors as per Lancelot's Grand. this is where i would stretch, but Lancelot is all about healing his country from the sins of the past. Sieg? more confusing of an idea there.
(Death's colors is "pale" which isn't really telling to associate to Vane and all, except if yellow is considered pale)
it feels like there's a case to be made about all "four horsemen" of the dragon knights to be associated to one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse - followed by the horrors the apocalypse would bring, but always rising above in order to heal the world from the horrors brought forth
with the current introduction to a beast from the book of Revelation.... that's a possible reading.

this is totally random but god, with every crazy things that happened in the 9th anni story i don't feel like it sank in enough that Granblue Fantasy said that if Lancelot lost Vane, he would be a bloodthirsty killer who would have no mercy whatsoever.
Vane, who's storyarc has been about how he feels like he's never enough, that he can't catch up to the people around him, that he's replaceable, who's working twice as hard as everyone else to feel like he can earn his place as a protector, who only NOW is confident about what he can bring, but started out in a place of self loathing about how he's not that useful
... being Lancelot's salvation JUST by being alive. And therefore being the salvation of Feendrache because the person Lancelot would have become without Vane is too awful to think of.
Just... that just living is enough. Just living is already making a difference. I think it's a nice theme to put on a character who didn't feel useful for the longest time. That he didn't even need to be useful. He just needed to be alive. and that was enough.
Man the 9th anni event still hits when i think about it mannnnn.

But honestly, Maleagant's speech moved me to tears. Just. Being subjected to all of that horror just because of the way you were born. Being ostracized and hated and treated as less than human just because of the way you are... As a LGBTQ person, that hits close to home. That's really relevant in today's times and I'm glad the subject matter was treated with respect and they weren't made out to be the villains because they retaliated against the oppressive system. It was just really good. cries
honestly yeah, same. it genuinely messed me up.
i don't really talk about it on here but hhh my Mom is of Jewish and French&Algerian descent, and while she didn't pass down anything culturally speaking (she considers herself atheist and she did everything in her life to conceal our heritage, so i don't know as many cultural stuff that isn't just. the Trauma:tm: or just things my mom unconsciously passed down), the conversation, especially, about how much our family had lost to the holocaust when her family lived in France, and then to the Algerian war after they moved there have been.... a lot. this is something we talk about a lot.
like. i think it's why i also kinda flew off the handle a little at receiving dick jokes out of it because to me it's just. Yeah. Yeah i those are conversations that hit extremely deep especially in term of generational trauma, and, of course, current politics as well.
I think it's also like. something i'm kinda eyeing Lancelot about in case his Valiant heritage ever happen to be relevant. Because i know i've seen people brush it off like it doesn't matter because Lancelot doesn't seem to feel anything with the dragons around him or not but there's... definitely something to be had with a heritage to a culture you weren't taught anything about and yet still the ghost of knowing it could fall down on you at anytime.
I think it's really hard to find a story that really talk about genocide while also being like. fair to the victims. More often than not fantasy stories in particular end up falling into the trap of saying that there was a reason it happened, actually, or that well it's from the past you can't punish the people now :/ or stuff like that and it's. wehh.
Personally, it made me think especially about the Ainu people in Japan. I am not really well versed on the topic, but there was basically a whole genocide on the Indigenous people of Hokkaido, and i know in recent years, Japan has been trying to take some lands that belonged to the Ainu in order to build in some themeparks, and when the Ainu survivors tried to make their plea heard and have Japan acknowledge their warcrimes, the government denied it fully. (and it's not to mention how Koreans have been asking for the past decades for Japan to recognize their warcrimes and the gov still fully in pure denial it even happened. which is a similar topic that is worth mentioning)
in the past few years Japan has been under fire for their complete refusal to address the genocides and warcrimes they had commited, and there's been a really big public outcry around the world about the state denial going on and the way it also transcribe on how those genocides are... well... /not/ taught.
so i do think it's like, extremely relevant to Japanese politics. I even saw a seiyuu mention how topical this event is. This is an event that directly criticize the current Japanese policy of constant denial and stuff.
and, obviously, it can apply to any other situation where rights are denied to people for various reasons, which is extremely relevant all around the world because of the rise of fascism and the way most governments these days are completely lost in the history revisionism sauce, and it's genuinely alarming. Look at any country's politics and all of them are trying to rewrite history in some way and it's sickening.
I personally immediately connected to it because, on top of my history awareness, it's just like. conversations i regularly have with my mom when we discuss our family's past. It stung extremely close from home. even if i'm also LGBT+ this was where my thoughts immediately went.
but therefore, it's something that applies to any experiences of oppressed people who are currently having their history erased by fascist government that are trying to get rid of "the undesirable"
i genuinely think granblue dealt with the topic with a lot of grace, and Maleagant genuinely managed to pass down the politics, the pain, the history, the old hurt as well as the new hurt, just so well.
it really struck a cord with me. It was really well done.
so yeah feeling you fully on this one friend.
I think this event was pretty graceful at addressing this topic while also really anchoring itself as anti-fascist and it was honestly a breath of fresh air.

I always wondered how they would get Vane to have some personal stakes in everything since he's always been more about protecting the people around him rather than any grand goals and, well, I guess destroying his hometown sure is one way to do it. Poor guy just keeps losing people dear to him.
yeah that sure helped "raising up the stakes"
tho i feel like more than losing people close to him, it really was just.... the fact he was forced to fight the people he wanted to protect at all cost, that really is his breaking point.
and the way he reflects on that after the fact and wonder who he is supposed to protect when people on both sides are people he's meant to protect, is what really is going to raise the stakes with him.
Him losing more and more people though... genuinely is tragic. Like he just constantly has to watch them die in front of him huh.
Ironically he ends up being the knight that has the most ties to death in general. Like, all of them lost people close to them, but for Vane that's starting to be a high number of people + the fact he's the one who sees ghosts + the fact he's the one who dies in an alternative timeline. the guy is just followed by death all around, and his ideal would be to be able to protect anyone, ever, regardless of which sides they're on, which just have him stand in the heart of more and more death.
it's going to be tough on him for sure from then on. He'll probably have a harder time dealing with things that will ask for him to take sides into consideration, especially now that he knows that this caused the death of parental figures.
it's just something i'm thinking about, but whenever they go through with Mordred switching sides or not once his past is revealed, i do feel like this could work as a cataclyst to have Vane wonder just to which extends he can protect the people he cares about when protecting them would end up hurting others people he wants to protect. Something like that.
I do worry also about him keeping his grief away from Lancelot, though i'm glad he could talk it out with Percival at least... i just hope that him trying to carry everything on his own isn't a set up for him ultimately breaking later because he didn't rely on Lancelot.
but yeah. man. that event was rough on him.
