Desert Loreirran village concept art
I’m not that great at architecture, so I’m practicing it with some village concept art. I’ll definitely me making more here soon. This is a good time to also talk about the desert village architecture. (Information under the concept pictures)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Building Materials:
The desert region Loreirrans utilize a combination of natural materials to construct their desert homes and city buildings. These materials include:
- Sand: Sand is used as a foundational element, providing stability and insulation against the desert's extreme temperatures.
- Mud and Clay: Mud and clay are mixed with water to create a binding agent. This mixture is essential for forming the structures and keeping them sturdy.
- Plant Wastes: Various plant materials, such as dried leaves and stems, are added to the mix. These materials contribute to the insulation and help regulate the interior temperature.
- Water: Water is a precious resource in the desert, and it is carefully used to moisten the building materials and facilitate their molding.
2. Cooling Architecture:
The desert region Loreirran buildings are ingeniously designed to maintain a comfortable interior temperature, even during scorching summer months. Their architecture includes:
- Thermal Insulation: The combination of mud, clay, and plant waste acts as natural insulation, keeping the interiors cool during the day and retaining warmth during the chilly desert nights.
- Ventilation: Buildings feature strategically placed openings and wind-catching structures that facilitate natural ventilation. Cross-breezes help regulate the indoor climate.
- Shaded Courtyards: Courtyards within villages and towns are often surrounded by buildings, creating shaded areas where residents can seek relief from the sun's intensity.
3. Surface Villages and Subterranean Cities:
The Loreirrans have adapted their architectural styles to suit different settlement types:
Surface Villages and Towns: These settlements are typically located in proximity to natural rocky formations and hills. The Loreirrans mimic the rounded and occasionally pointed shapes of these geological features in their building designs, ensuring that their structures blend seamlessly with the desert landscape.
Underground Cities: In larger urban centers, Loreirrans construct underground cities to escape the extreme surface temperatures. These subterranean cities are accessed through large sun holes in the ground. Roads connect these cities to the surface, allowing for transportation and trade.
4. Aesthetic Variations:
The aesthetic of Loreirran architecture varies based on the specific location of a village or town:
- Rounded Structures: In areas with smoother rock formations, Loreirran buildings adopt smooth and rounded shapes. These structures flow organically with the surrounding landscape.
- Pointed Structures: In regions with more rugged rock formations, some buildings may feature natural pointiness to mimic the local geological formations, creating a unique architectural style that honors the desert's natural beauty.

Graphcore unveils new GC200 chip and the expandable M2000 IPU Machine that runs on them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a lot riding on the use of artificial intelligence technology to help us take giant leaps ahead in solving complex challenges — whether it’s medical breakthroughs, building better cybersecurity, or better navigation systems for cars and other moving objects. But the more advanced the application, the bigger the need for hardware that can handle the calculations and processing; and that means the race is on for ever-more powerful processing. Now, the UK startup Graphcore is announcing its latest contribution to that effort.
Today, it is announcing a new chip, the GC200, and a new IPU Machine that runs on it, the M2000, which Graphcore says is the first AI computer to achieve a petaflop of processing power “in the size of a pizza box.”
Graphcore says that there are no plans for the GC200 to be sold separately, and it will come only in the M2000. Nigel Toon, the CEO and co-founder, said the M2000 is now shipping to early access customers and will be more widely by the end of this year to customers in applications in areas like financial services, healthcare, technology and more, “wherever AI is used.”
This is the second generation of Graphcore’s hardware to be released, and its first in just under two years, Toon notes.
The IPU Machine uses four of the 7nm GC200 IPU chips, with the GC200 featuring 59.4 billion transistors on each chip. Potentially, Graphcore says that up to 64,000 IPUs can be connected together to create a vast parallel processor of up to 16 exaflops of computing power and petabytes of memory to support models with trillions of parameters. The idea is that these can be scaled up as necessary.
The moves come at a key moment both for Graphcore and the AI hardware industry. The UK upstart  competes against leviathans in the world of processors like Nvidia and Intel — Graphcore raised a further $150 million in May at a nearly $2 billion valuation to compete against them, and Toon says the $450 million it’s raised so far is enough for now, with customers like Microsoft and others already on its books — but also a plethora of other companies building AI chips. And it was only in May that Nvidia unveiled its own latest chip, the A100, its first Ampere-based GPU that promises 5 petaflops of performance.
Graphcore and its leader Toon — who, with his co-founder Simon Knowles, had sold a previous startup called Icera to Nvidia — argue that its IPU approach is more efficient and advanced than the GPU route that Nvidia is taking.
“We are trying to build products that are easy to put into your existing compute infrastructure,” he said. “It means you can scale up to thousands of IPU processors.” And, he added, that means that the cost of ownership can be 10-20 times lower for the IPU approach, which in turn translates to faster take-up of the hardware.
Toon says that while other chipmakers continue to work on a number of other processing applications in parallel with AI — for example for mobile devices, or quantum chips — Graphcore is remaining firmly focused on AI applications, which he says remains a “massive opportunity for us to grow our business and add more customers.”
“We’re 100% focused on silicon processors for AI, and on building systems that can plug into existing centers. Why would we want to build CPUs or GPUs if those already work well? This is just a different toolbox.” He said he believes it will be a 10-15 year window before quantum or molecular computing to come along, a trajectory that might pose a lot of challenges for smaller startups trying to build in that area against biggies like IBM.
Toon noted that AI stands among the trends that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated — not just  around the many applications being pursued around the health crisis and fighting the virus itself, but also around working and improving processes for other services resulting from that.
“We’ll probably burn $100 million more investing in technology and people” — the company now has 450 employees, Toon noted, “but our revenues are also ramping, and the $300 million in cash we have today should be sufficient to get us to a a fast and profitable business.”

Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Empty Nester Home Renovation
Located in Coronado, California, and recently renovated by Brittney Nielsen of Brittney Nielsen Interior Design, this home was designed as a second home for a couple with 3 sons. They were soon-to-be empty nesters and have since sold the family home and moved into this house. The home was a track home built in the 1970’s that hadn’t been updated. It is in a wonderful location on the canal in the Coronado Cays and the clients are avid boat and water sports enthusiasts.
The client wanted to modernize the floor plan and add natural light to the space, so the team took the house down to the studs, added approximately 450 square feet and reimagined the entire layout. The exterior elevation had a Spanish feel but the client wanted a clean lined modern feel inside. See more details shared by the interior designer of this inspiring empty nester renovation.

Europe updates its predatory pricing investigation against Qualcomm over UMTS baseband chips
On the heels of Google getting served a $5 billion fine by the EU over monopolistic practices related to its Android operating system, the European Commission today resurfaced another ongoing case in the world of large U.S. tech companies. The EC said that it has added to its investigation into Qualcomm and its predatory pricing of UMTS baseband chips. Specifically, today the Commission has sent more details relating to elements of the “price cost” test that it had applied to measure just how much below cost Qualcomm was selling UMTS baseband chips to edge out competitors.
If the case is decided against Qualcomm, the company could face an additional fine of up to 10 percent of its worldwide revenues. In 2009, these were $10.4 billion, while in 2017, global turnover was over $22 billion.
The original, 2015 case was based on a complaint filed by Icera — once a big player in baseband chips — and dates back to practices between 2009 and 2011 and alleged that Qualcomm used its market position to negotiate artificially low prices for UMTS chips — used in 3G phones — in order to oust out Icera. Others that made similar chips include Nvidia.
Qualcomm has wasted little time in responding to the notice posted by the EC.
“This investigation, now in its ninth year, alleges harm in 2009-2011, to a competitor who chose years later to exit the market for reasons unrelated to Qualcomm,” said Don Rosenberg, general counsel and executive vice president of Qualcomm in a statement. “While the investigation has been narrowed, we are disappointed to see it continues and will immediately begin preparing our response to this supplementary statement of objections. We belief that once the Commission has reviewed our response it will find that Qualcomm’s practices are pro-competitive and fully consistent with European competition rules.”
Qualcomm is already in the middle of appealing a $1.23 billion fine in the EU over LTE chip dominance in the iPhone, related to deals that were made with Apple at the expense of another big rival of Qualcomm’s, Intel. (Never mind that Apple and Qualcomm are also in the middle of a patent dispute.)
This older case, as Qualcomm points out, has been narrowed since it was first announced almost exactly three years ago. And while we don’t know what the exact details of the supplementary objections are and whether they have expanded them again (we have contacted the EC to try to find out), the Commission also notes in its short statement — printed in full below — that sending an update to its calculations doesn’t necessarily imply the outcome of this case.
Statement below.
The European Commission has sent a Supplementary Statement of Objections to Qualcomm Inc. This is a procedural step in the Commission’s ongoing investigation under EU antitrust rules looking into whether Qualcomm engaged in ‘predatory pricing’. The Commission sent a Statement of Objections to Qualcomm in December 2015 detailing its concerns. In particular, the Commission’s preliminary view is that between 2009 and 2011 Qualcomm sold certain UMTS baseband chipsets at prices below cost, with the intention of eliminating Icera, its main competitor in the leading edge segment of the market at that time. UMTS chipsets are key components of mobile devices. They enable both voice and data transmission in third generation (3G) cellular communication. The Supplementary Statement of Objections sent today focuses on certain elements of the “price-cost” test applied by the Commission to assess the extent to which UMTS baseband chipsets were sold by Qualcomm at prices below cost. The sending of a Supplementary Statement of Objections does not prejudge the outcome of the investigation. More information is available on the Commission’s competition website, in the public case register under the case number AT.39711.

Tundra region Loreirrans
I can’t sleep and I’m too impatient to wait for the poll to end, so I’m just gonna jump right in and talk about my OG alien species, the Loreirrans. Let’s start off with one of the regional appearances.
This group of loreirrans live in the cold and harsh environments of Icera-5. They have adapted to the cold weather with thick fur and the ability to breath in the dry, cold air without discomfort. The babies are hatched without fur but they quickly develop a thick coat only hours after hatching. The tundra Loreirrans prefer to live in homes that aren’t filled with technology, being more connected with their spiritual side. They have a more tribal way of living and regional government compared to other regional Loreirrans. Their homes are traditionally built out of the materials available to them in their area, such as wood, snow, moss, animals pelts and so on. Since there aren’t that many cold places on Icera-5 besides the small polar caps, this species of loreirran isn’t as plentiful as the others.
