La idea de esta fecha para homenajear a los boxeadores venezolanos, tanto hombres como mujeres, fue del periodista Orlando Bohórquez , actual presidente del SALÓN DE LA FAMA DEL BOXEO LATINOAMERICANO. Esta memorable fecha del pugilismo venezolano, apoyada por todos los gremios del deporte de "las narices chatas", y de los organismos oficiales del país, incluyendo la Presidencia de la República, fue seleccionada como reconocimiento al primer título mundial de boxeo conquistado por el temible noqueador Carlos “Morocho” Hernández, el 18 de enero de 1965, en la categoría de los Welter Junior. Cada 18 de enero se realizan actos para festejar esta importante fecha del deporte nacional.
