i know you've done a post about what all the ND kids think about brittana but what do brittany and santana think about each of the new directions kids? also, do you think that while bram dated santana thought that maybe they were gonna be "endgame"? (i literally could not think of a better word lol) (i'm so sorry i always ask like 30 questions at once but) also, do you think santana knew about the fake wedding? do you think that britt ever told her? thanks and sry for my terrible phrasing!
Hey, @letmerebloginpeace!
So my answer to your first question turned into A Thing™ and has gotten long enough to warrant its own post. I’m still working on it, but I’ll put it up sometime in the next few days.
As for your other questions, I’ve got them after the cut.
_______
Does Santana ever worry that Bram might be “endgame”?
Santana is a huge worrywart, so of course she does.
To recall, Santana’s whole reason for breaking up with Brittany is not because she doesn’t love her but because she loves her so much. She sees Brittany suffering through their long distance relationship—and, hell, she’s suffering through it herself—and she knows there’s nothing she can do to rectify the situation considering that she’s living in another state and Brittany is still stuck in high school and there is no way for them to physically be together for the foreseeable future.
Since Santana values Brittany’s happiness above her own, she tries to do the right thing by “setting Brittany free,” affording Brittany the liberty to take comfort in someone else if she so chooses.
Of course, even as Santana takes this action, she is hoping against hope that the situation will be temporary and that she and Brittany will eventually find their ways back to each other because they’re destined to be together, right? She feels torn because part of her knows that if Brittany does eventually end up dating someone else, it’s going to kill her, but at the same time, she does want Brittany to be happy even if she has to herself be miserable to make that happen.
For a few weeks following their breakup, Brittany doesn’t date anyone else and in fact goes out of her way to try to win Santana back. While Santana isn’t necessarily thrilled that Brittany is pining over her, she can’t help but feel at least somewhat reassured by what Brittany says to her backstage in episode 4x06. She wants Brittany to be happy, but it’s good to know that she hasn’t lost Brittany’s love. Santana holds onto that reassurance going forward.
—but then a few weeks later, Tina blindsides her with the news that not only is Brittany now dating someone else, but that someone is Sam, and things between Brittany and Sam seem to be pretty serious.
The fact that Brittany never told Santana she was dating Sam totally fucks with Santana’s head. From her perspective, Brittany’s behavior lends credence to the idea that Sam might indeed be legitimate competition. After all, why actively conceal the relationship if it were just some silly little fling? Maybe there is something really there.
The mere possibility is enough to send Santana into a panic.
I’m sure that during her three and a half hour drive from Louisville to Lima, Santana entertains all sorts of despairing thoughts about Bram, including the possibility that they might be endgame.
It’s not that Santana believes that Sam is a better match for Brittany than she is. It’s just that she has always feared rejection and worried that maybe, somehow, she is unlovable. Wouldn’t staying with Sam in many ways be easier for Brittany? Isn’t Sam in some ways a nicer person than she is?
In her heart of hearts, Santana knows that she and Brittany belong together, but she also has the hardest time in the world believing that good things can happen to a person like her. Maybe she ruined everything by breaking up with Brittany. Maybe she threw away her one chance to be happy, and Brittany will never forgive her.
Of course, as I discuss here, I think Santana focuses less on the “Sam of it all” than she does on the possibility that Brittany could be with basically anybody else other than herself. It’s not that Sam Evans is especially worrisome or noxious to Santana. In fact, she would be just as upset about Brittany dating and concealing her relationship status with Mike Chang or Marley Rose or a stranger. Santana’s is a mind that is always going to run wild with worst case scenarios and no-win situations, so in her view, even if Bram doesn’t last, there is still a chance that Brittany will nevertheless never return to her. Maybe Brittany will date someone else after Sam. Maybe she’ll end up marrying that person and being with them forever.
What Santana is really freaking out about is that there are no guarantees that Brittany will return to her once everything is said and done. She wants to believe that they’re destined to be together, but who’s to say if she’s right? She’s got that old maxim playing through her mind, “If you love someone, let them go, and if it’s meant to be, they’ll come back to you someday,” and she’s wondering how it applies to her and Brittany. She can only hold her breath and pray that one day Brittany will come back to her. Otherwise, the situation is really out of her hands.
Do you think Santana knew about the fake [Bram] wedding?
Most likely. My sense is that either Tina tells her about it in episode 4x13 or Brittany tells her about it at some later point.
Concerning the first option, even though Tina tries to drop the Bram bomb and then hang up the phone quickly, one can easily imagine that Santana immediately calls her back and demands to know what the hell she’s talking about.
Since Tina’s original call wasn’t really for courtesy—she is trying to get Santana angry at Brittany to get revenge on Brittana for repeatedly stealing her spotlight throughout S4—she’s probably all too happy to tell Santana all about how close Brittany and Sam are and how, oh yeah, over Christmas they got married, and the marriage was only eventually “annulled” because there is no such thing as a Mayan Church.
If that’s how the big reveal goes down, then, to me, that adds another layer of meaning to Santana’s actions throughout episode 4x13 and would perhaps even better explain why she is so agitated and defensive when she comes back to Lima (see here).
I mean, following the breakup, she kind of maybe expected Brittany to perhaps date someone else, but there’s no way she would have emotionally prepared herself for Brittany to marry Sam “Trouty Mouth” Evans and not even tell her about it.
Getting the news secondhand from Tina Cohen-Chang would feel like a kick in the gut, and Santana would have plenty of time to work herself into a full-fledged “Oh my god. How could Brittany do this to me? I thought she understood that even though we’re not together right now, the plan has always been for us to get back together in the end. Did I ruin us? Have I lost her forever?” frenzy on the long drive from Kentucky up to Ohio.
Of course, that said, it is also possible that Tina doesn’t give Santana the dirt and Santana instead learns about the wedding directly from Brittany, perhaps at the end of S4 or once Brittana get back together in S5.
In either case, I imagine that once Santana has the chance to finally talk to Brittany about the whole situation, the conversation plays out something like the one I’ve described in this post.
Thanks for the questions! I’ll tag you in the Brittana New Directions post once I’m finished with it.
