Mr. Poe as the Fool and a Catalyst for the Loss of Childhood Innocence in Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events

“‘People aren't either wicked or noble,’ the hook-handed man said, ‘They're like chef's salads, with good things and bad things chopped and mixed together in a vinaigrette of confusion and conflict.’” - Lemony Snicket, The Grim Grotto, p. 223

Now, I must admit it’s been far too long since I’ve read any of the books in Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events. The final book in the series, The End was published in 2006 (thirteen years ago… really?), anyways, as I’m on spring break I’ve been binging the Netflix adaptation. In season 1, episode 4, The Reptile Room: Part 1, there is a scene in which the Baudelaires, accompanied by Mr. Poe, are traveling down Lousy Lane which is located near a horseradish factory. Mr. Poe mistakes the smell of horseradish for ginger which perplexed my mom. I found myself explaining to her that a running joke of the series is that the adults are inept. Thinking on this, I found myself relating Mr. Poe to the Fool archetype.

The Fool functions a few ways in literature and film. Joe Bunting on the website: The Write Practice lists these succinctly as: “Comic Relief”, “Characterization”, “Conscience”, and “An Invitation to Freedom” (The Write Practice). He goes on to state that the Fool is also free to express more emotion than is culturally appropriate, characterizes other characters in the media because of how these characters interact with the Fool who they believe is someone beneath them, and is free to speak the truth and live freely. I can’t say that Mr. Poe lives freely, as he seems to live to serve the bank, but he does function as comic relief, characterization, and conscience. Exploring the literature around A Series of Unfortunate Events I stumbled on a article titled: Not so unfortunate: carnivalisation, metafiction & the elements of grotesque realism in The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket (Kimiagari, 2017).This article details how the Baudelaire’s stories function as a kind of morbid fairy tale and when read using Bakhtin’s definition of “Carnival” (p. 307) which Kimigari interprets as “...a place… where nothing is stable and fixed” (p. 307). The author goes on to discuss Selden, Widdowson, and Brooker’s (2005) interpretation of carnivalesque in terms of

“...relativity and reversal” (p. 307). This is where “...hierarchies are turned on their heads (fools become kings, kings become beggars); opposites are mingled (fact and fantasy, heaven and hell); the sacred is profaned. The ‘jolly relativity’ of all things is proclaimed” (Selden and Widdowson, p. 41).

In short, “Carnivalised location, therefore, is a place of the upside down and the inside out” (Kimigari, p. 307).

Looking at the world of A Series of Unfortunate Events it’s an uncanny place where children’s parents die in fires and most adults seem to be incompetent at best and antagonistic at worst. There are secret organizations known as VFD with a seemingly endless list of phrases that constitutes what the acronym means. The members of this organization are identified only by the recurring image of an eye which is often tattooed on their ankles. The whole thing has got a bit of that Tim Burton surrealist atmosphere going on with less corpses. The people who should be taking care of the children do not and cannot, whether it is because of death or just sheer stupidity. However, the people who wish the children harm, Count Olaf and his cronies, while over the top and exaggerated, at least manage to create schemes that, in this world, could potentially steal the Baudelaire fortune.

To bring this back to Mr. Poe, he at least cares (a little?)... okay, he tries. Usually in the stumbling manner that an adult does in this world, but from time to time he critiques the children and functions as their conscience such as when Violet picks the lock of Count Olaf’s suitcase in The Reptile Room: Part 2 and Mr. Poe responds along the lines of “Nice girls shouldn't know how to do that sort of thing” (Fox, M. & Palansky, M). At times, Mr. Poe acts as comic relief when he panics (to be honest, K. Todd Freeman kills it in this roll). In The Miserable Mill: Part 1, after losing the Baudelaires the episode opens with Mr. Poe panicking. His first lines in which he grabs onto a man on the street function both to show that he cares, but also gives the Baudelaires a chance to sneak off which in a roundabout way functions as the “Invitation to Freedom” (The Write Practice) Bunting mentions. When the Baudelaires take this chance, they seize the reins and make their destiny their own. And yet, they are not exactly free as they are pursued not only by Count Olaf, but also Mr. Poe, and other adults who care about them as the series progresses. Instead of relying on the adults to care for them as children would normally do, they grow closer together and form absolute trust in one another. This lends itself to Mr. Poe’s functions as the Fool as he characterizes the Baudelaires as characters who recognize that he wishes them well, but understand that he cannot keep them safe. Mr. Poe’s ineptitude forces the Baudelaires to make a choice, to reject the social order that we are used to, especially in texts written for children such as parents knowing best, children doing good by listening to their elders, happy endings, and life lessons learned. Instead, the Baudelaires grow up fast. They recognize the cruelty of the world they exist in, learn who they can trust- each other-, and even commit crimes to further their explorations of the mysteries surrounding their lives and family as the story progresses.

There is a certain truth to the idea that children see the world differently than adults. In a 1989 interview with Stephen King on WAMC’s: Public Radio Book Show which was animated by the YouTube channel Blank on Blank, King states that childhood is characterized by two things for him. First that “...it’s a secret world that exists by its own rules and lives in its own culture,” and secondly that "...we forget what it is to be a child and we forget that life, which is kind of exotic and strange". He goes on to ponder that children “...tend to think around corners instead of in straight lines" (Blank on Blank). The Baudelaires learn quickly that the world is not black and white and they have to make decisions, some of which may hurt innocent people. Early on in the series Mr. Poe nearly loses his job because the Baudelaires run away (he eventually gets promoted to Head of Orphan affairs), people who try to help them die, and at times they must steal or lie to survive. Perhaps children see the world more honestly than any of us. Not through rose colored glasses, but as a place that is true. They trust until they are hurt, they explore until they learn not to, and in a way the symbol of the eye that marks the secret organization of VFD throughout this series is not only a symbol of watchfulness, but also, what happens to children as they experience the world that grownups have created. In the Neil Gaiman’s novel: The Ocean at the End of the Lane, the text opens with the epigraph: “I remember my own childhood vividly… I knew terrible things. But I knew I mustn't let adults know I knew. It would scare them" and this quote from Maurice Sendak, I think, sums up the world of Lemony Snicket and the Baudelaire orphans.

Arthur sighed, thinking over his two options. He was torn between contacting someone affiliated with a recently missing person and researching and comparing the persons. While Arthur dreaded making calls, he has to for the sake of the case and then he could seek the comfort of researching on his computer...

He scrolled through the more recent names and stopped at one of a young woman. Susan Johnson, age 24, brown eyes and hair, 5′5″, and was last seen at her job. The contact connected to her name seemed to belong to a Susie Johnson, possibly a mother? A sister?

The mechanic sighed before giving a call,

The woman verbally deflated, Arthur feeling the weight of her pain suddenly in his chest. God, he hated making these calls---

❛❛Mystery Skulls inc, eh?❜❜  she asked, voice flat yet sharp and bitter.  ❛❛Looks like you all have a website huh? Look asshole, I’m looking to find my goddamn twin sister not play your fucking sick game of find the ghost. Don’t you EVER contact me again.❜❜

Before Arthur could speak she had hung up and he untensed with a heavy sigh.

❛❛That...didn’t work...❜❜  he mumbled, turning to his computer and scrolling through the list of people once more. He gathered cases both old and new of various people. 

They all..well, didn’t share anything in common really...Their appearances, ages, races, and genders ranged from all ages save for children or teenagers..Hm..were they all legal so their ‘disappearance’ wouldn’t be major concern?

...But this all had to link back to Felix and his tours wouldn’t it? He wonders if Felix has a website for himself; sure enough as Arthur searched it up he found one. Opening the photo gallery showing off the tours and millions of people who have attended, Arthur began saving many of the images to compare to the missing persons.

Arthur felt his heart jump into his throat--

The longer he sat and stared at the photos..the more and more missing people he found--

What could have happened to them? Why did it seem they disappear after seeing Felix’s speech? This was...a breakthrough the mechanic rather wish he hadn’t found--

Just as he was about to identify more of the people he began noticing his email tab was flashing--

Keshet Rewatches All of Scooby-Doo, Pt. 8: "Foul Play in Funland"

("Scooby-Doo, Where Are You", Season 1 Episode 8)

AKA "An Actual Zoinking Robot, For Real"

As the episode opens, the gang are on a beach near dark, finishing up digging for clams, since it’s 1969 and there’s nearly nothing for young people to entertain themselves with. Although he happily helps with the digging, Scooby astonishingly is revealed to hate clams.

My mind is blown. There’s a food that Scoobert “Scooby” Doo dislikes? The moment passes without any commentary on how mind-blowingly bizarre it as Shaggy looks out towards the nearby Funland amusement park, wishing that it was open... so he could eat park food, with actually going on the rides a distant third.

Daphne’s not interested in going now, though, and in a rare bit of her showing any outright fear, she thinks the place looks “spooky, even haunted!” with its lights out. Even as Velma tut-tuts her, the lights come on at the park! It’s a simple visual of colored dots on black shapes over a blue background, but something about it always stood out as charming to me. Even the gang’s shock that “that place won’t be open for weeks!” doesn’t ruin the image, the romance of the old-fashioned boardwalk amusement park.

As the gang watch from the distance, the rollercoaster comes to life, and a close-up view reveals a rider in the first car. What sort of spooky figure is about to menace the gang at an evocative locale like an amusement park on the beach? Is it a scary clown? A pirate ghost, or a mutant fisherman to draw on the marine locale?

No, it’s a robot. A sophisticated android is enjoying VIP privileges on the rides, eyes blinking amber light with all the excitement his expressionless face cannot convey. The gang can’t see him in the distance, however, and Shaggy and Scooby distract themselves by playing at ordering food... which actually arrives via an unseen hand! When Freddie actually manages to win the notorious stacked bottles game, someone invisibly restores the glass bottles he’d knocked over, and a prize appears while his back is turned!

If that’s the prize for knocking down all the bottles, what cheap garbage do you get if you only knock down one? As Freddie tosses payment for playing the game down on the counter, Daphne observes that this is a Kewpie doll... and the register automatically rings up the two bits Fred paid! 

Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby are enjoying their mystery meals, when Shaggy notices someone running by.

Was it hard to get this screencap because of the speed at which the robot was moving? Jinkies no, because the robot is only moving as fast as Shaggy usually runs. The cast consistently react as if he was moving inhumanly fast, coupled with his “invisible” actions supposedly done at lightning speed, but the animation never bothers to make him move along any faster than any ordinary human character, and none of the scenes of things mysteriously happening are rendered in a way that would suggest the same machine is responsible. Were other thins in the park meant to be automated, or were the artists just unable to think of a way to convincingly show superhuman speed?

In any case, Scooby thinks it must be Superman, but this is a man of steel inside and out. The duo try to track him, but...

Horror-stricken, Shaggy concludes he must be a ghost, but Scooby catches sight of the tin terror entering the Hall of Mirrors... at an even slower walk. Not a ghost, Shaggy concludes, “he looks more like a man from Mars,” and follows him inside. After a few of the requisite visual gags of distorted reflections, Shaggy realizes he’s not alone in the mirror.

HE SAID THE THING!

Scooby and Shaggy flee, and the next time we see the robot, he’s climbing onto the Ferris Wheel in view of Fred, Daphne, and Velma. The ride stops with his carriage at the very peak of the wheel, and Fred operates a hand-cranked manual override to bring him down... but the car is empty, and the lights start going down around the park.

So... the only conclusion one can make there is that the robot rode the Ferris Wheel to the top, and jumped out before going to shut everything down. It seems absurd at first, but, to be entirely honest, if I had superhuman durability? I’d totally do the same thing, just because I could. 

The gang regroup and discuss their strange visitor, and then notice another building in the distance.

Now, that is a hell of a house. Maybe it’s just my under-15K-per-year lifestyle, but i live near some pretty affluent suburbs and a place like that would qualify its owner as solidly wealthy. The gang suppose it must belong to the park caretaker, meaning either they have no concept of the earning levels of amusement park employees, or this is a magical universe where that’s the kind of job that nets you a seven figure income.

Mr. Jenkins and his sister Sarah, an elderly pair who cast doubt on everything the gang says they saw. Maybe the moonlight was playing tricks on their eyes, there’s no-one else on this island, the—wait, island?

An amusement park not only by the beach but on an island, and the villain they went with for this episode is a robot? Thematic consistency is not the strong suit of this series. In any case, the gang decide they won’t be dissuaded, except for Shaggy, who just wants to go home.

Daphne.

Daphne Blake. You have known Shaggy since you were children, why would you ever assume anything but that Shaggy would rather eat pizza?

The gang return to the park and find that the machines are all running again, but wrong. For some reason, this includes the hot dog stand, which is now pitching out an arc of ready-to-eat dogs, buns and all. The antics include the robot, who puts on a show of juggling plates, tossing out dozens of game prizes, and... going into the Tunnel of Love.

He’s just trying to have a good time, y’all!

More carnival antics ensue, including Scooby demonstrating that his tail is strong enough to ring the bell on the strength test game.

Mind you, this also involves demonstrating that his tail is prehensile.

Scooby is a talking dog with retractable claws and an inhumanly strong prehensile tail. Again, i ask: WHAT ARE YOU, SCOOBY-DOO?

The later reveal in Mystery Inc that Scooby is a descendant of godlike aliens starts to make more and more sense.

Amidst all the antics of chasing him and being chased, it’s strange that the gang never identify the obvious robot as a robot. He’s a “torpedo man”, or “that character”, or “the traffic cop”.

Oh, yeah, about that last one.

This episode shows off something weird about how Velma is written when she loses her glasses. It’s not just that she can’t see, she seems to enter some kind of delusional state where she concludes things about the world around her that would make no sense at all if she remembered what was happening to her before her glasses were lost. It goes beyond “Mister Magoo” antics: the instant her glasses are off, Velma assumes she’s out driving her bumper (or “dodgem” as she calls it) car on a regular street, which she had no earthly reason to conclude.

Eventually, the gang encounter Mr. Jenkins again, and he confesses the truth: the being the gang have been chasing around is a robot. An actual robot. Not a person dressed up as one, which the gang never seemed to even guess at, instead thinking he was just a weird, super-fast and invulnerable human being.

Jenkins tells the gang he intended to run the whole park with his robot creations, proving he either has no sense of the value of his creation, or is just really dedicated to following his bliss. 

After a brief attempt at getting the gang to help capture Charlie is thrown off, it’s revealed that the culprit behind the robot going haywire is none other than Sarah Jenkins. Why?

Oh, so it’s a concern about safety and the reliability of untested artificial int—nope, as the gang agree with her, it becomes apparent that this is just anti-robot bigotry and they agree with Sarah that children need to have human contact and would not prefer fully functional automata over creepy carnies.

“I never thought about that,” says Mr. Jenkins. “I just wanted a perfect robot.”

But, whatever! Jenkins rebuilds his creation as “Charlie the Second”, and this episode ends on a bizarre, uncharacteristic note:

the gang met an actual, super-powered, intelligent nonhuman entity and no doubt was ever cast upon it as being genuine

the real culprit behind the mayhem, Sarah, receives no punishment and it’s even agreed that she was in the right

in spite of all this, Charlie is rebuilt, with no indication that he will be replaced by humans after all

Oh, and now he can smile. Or at least, his face is made to appear to smile.

So, Mr. Jenkins, the elderly amusement park caretaker, built a sophisticated android with both superhuman strength and speed, and the delicate sensitivity needed to provide a pet with pleasant stimuli.

And why isn’t there any actual resolution to Sarah’s sabotage?

1. Scooby Doo is my favorite cartoon. I’m a fan of Scooby Doo Where Are You? (the original series) and What’s New Scooby Doo? Along with countless animated movies. I, however, hated everything to do with the Mystery Inc show.  2. I’m a ravenclaw through and through and damned proud of it. 3. Communication can be hard for me sometimes because I’m such an introvert, but once I feel comfortable with someone, nothing will stop me.

EXPERIENCE:

HOW LONG (MONTHS / YEARS?): As Loki, I’ve been writing him from September 1st 2012 to present. On tumblr, I’ve been roleplaying a total of over five years. Off of tumblr, I’ve been roleplaying since I was 13 or 14, so that’s about ten years. I’ve been writing in general all of my life. PLATFORMS YOU’VE USED: Currently, the only platform I use is Tumblr and I’ll do private rps with friends via skype or texts. I used to roleplay on Gaia Online and I also used to write fanfiction on DeviantArt. BEST EXPERIENCE: I’ve honestly had so many great experiences on Tumblr from people who just love rping with me to people I’ve met in real life or formed close friendships with. I even met my current roommate, @knightbeyondvoidandveil through Tumblr.

This event is our second missive event, which means a little bit of what happens tonight will be assigned to your muse. This event is a finale of the “Pestilence Chapter” and will be served to you in two parts. For the first part, your muse has been assigned a specific thread topic to explore. It’s up to you to delve into the interaction! 

For now, we ask that for this night, you explore just this assigned thread—and not to make more threads during the time of the Escape Room. (There’s more to be revealed; after Part 2 drops, you can make your own independent threads.) You can, however, make threads and starters before the clock starts at your Escape Room location if you wish.

The date stamp for the event is Thursday, January 26th, for timeline purposes (though you aren’t restricted to beginning threads tomorrow, of course, you can even begin them today). Assignments are considered game canon, whether or not you explore them deeply. If you have an issue with an assignment, let an Admin know! For after, please do not write past January 26th for any thread yet—the drop of Part 2 might affect your muse’s future outlook. 

Escape Rooms are a beloved past time for adrenaline junkies, gamers, team-builders, and competitive folks of all sorts. The premise is that you are shown to a room and then locked inside of it; within are a series of puzzles you have to figure out as a team in order to get released from the room. You must do this within one hour or your team fails the room. (You’re released, but you fail and take a shameful photo - you are the weakest link, goodbye.)

ROOM ONE: MURDER MYSTERY INC.

“Love is clockworks, and it's cold steel, fingers too numb to feel, squeeze the handle, blow out the candle—blindness.”

After arriving at the Escape Room headquarters, you are ushered into a sleek black limousine; you are asked to put all of your cellphones in a velvet black bag, which will be returned to you at the end. After the 8 people in your party are all settled in, 1920s music filters through the stereo system, grainy and warbled and nostalgic. A champagne aperitif is offered to you, if you dare to drink it. The car smells of polished leather and money—the actual scent of money, as if a great amount of it had been there recently.

You are driven for about fifteen minutes: do you drink? do you laugh? do you speak? Suddenly, the car screeches to a halt, hitting the breaks hard. The lights in the limo go dark and the music stops playing. And then one by one, each of you is led from the limousine. When it’s your turn to exit the limo, you step outside and find a dark bag placed immediately over your head and your hands bound in front by lead-rope: and you are led, stepping on concrete toward somewhere else. You hear door open, and you are pushed inside, then your hands unbound. You can remove the bag from your head.

The rest of your team is there. As your eyes adjust to the dim lighting, you can see a room dazzled with 1920s opulence. There is even a chandelier hanging over a running fountain—it’s ridiculous in its mockery, it’s entreatment. You find there is a stranger in your midst: a ninth person, who welcomes you to his humble home. Then, the lights flash, and he screams, and the actor lies on the floor, ‘dead,’ the echo of a gunshot hanging in the air like a question mark as blood pools around him.

Near by, Donato has found a small lock that requires a 3-number code to open a drawer in a stately foyer desk. They must work together to crack the code—inadvertently drawing them into a required long-awaited reunion neither of them would prefer to have right now. Conflict emerges and it isn’t long before the two are full of rage and angst.

Belial/Babylon: Babylon notices eggs hiding all around the room—golden-painted eggs, silver-painted eggs, rhinestone-covered eggs. Collecting a few, she realizes by shaking them that there might be something inside, so she breaks them open, revealing the following strands of paper:

Belial is studying the book case, noticing that among the many authors there, almost all of the books look faded and worn except one, which peeks out slightly. It’s marked as a book of poems. Perhaps if they can determine which poem Babylon found, they could find another clue on its page. That is, if they could cooperate—it seems Babylon hasn’t yet had the opportunity to confront Belial for “damaging” Dom. Belial engages in her argument, but has no trouble reminding her that he’s her boss.

Maria/Isadora: Maria turns over a heavy, ornate sitting chair to find that the base of the seat is hollow and that there is a latch she can undo; she finds a series of love letters from the now-deceased host to a woman named Chanterelle, who appears to have been a singer at a jazz club. For all of the letters, there are no post marks, no envelopes. Were they never sent? Some random letters are in all caps, and if she arranges them in order of date written, it spells out:  C H E C K T H E D R A I N. Maria shouts to Isadora, who has been studying the fountain. Isadora is less than interested in helping Maria, but for the sake of the task waves Maria over when she realizes there’s a key in the drain of one of the shallow trays. They have to figure out how to get it—but Isadora can’t help letting drop that she knows the cure exists.

Raziel/Cassiel: Cassiel finds a piece of old film in a jewelry dish that has a few frames, seeing what appears to be a woman singing at her own wedding. The man she marries is not the now-deceased host. She wonders what it could mean, but Raziel swoops in with a film reel he found taped under the desk that holds Donato’s drawer. Raziel and Cassiel must splice together the footage to discover the ‘end’ of the story—except Cassiel doesn’t even think Raziel can do that right, so how can he possibly do anything in Heaven right? Raziel obviously spats back, saying Shibah has been absent and done nothing to earn the throne. That if she wants to be God so badly, she should act like it.

ROOM TWO: JEKYLL AND HYDE.

After arriving at the Escape Room headquarters, you are shown through a door marked Authorized Personnel Only. Your party winds down a sterile looking white concrete hall, fluorescent panel lights above, flickering. Your shoes squeak and squick as you walk; even the floors seem too clean. You even feel a weird urge to not touch the walls. At the end of the hall is another door with the glass of its window frosted over: you’re shown through that, too. On the other side is the outdoors, actually: you can see a dirt driveway with haphazard gravel and unkempt, half-brown grasses. Lined up are 3 stately town cars, each pristine and white, freshly washed.

Each town car has a driver with white gloves, opening the door for your party. Three folks in the first two, two in the last. The car door is shut behind you and, as the engines revv to life, the windows of the car and a divider between you and the driver goes up—pitch black and opaque. You can no longer see where you’re going, but you’re comfortable enough. In what feels like forever—or is it only ten minutes?—you finally park and the car doors open. So rushed you can barely take in the outside, you are brought into what looks like a small house, and then down a flight of stairs. Your party is put into what would be a basement, the door behind you locked.

The basement itself is hardly grotesque: rather, it, too, is very stately. It looks instead like an office. There is a heavy oak desk with a green lamp and a laptop on it, an expensive throw rug, an assortment of pads and papers, a pad for prescriptions. Chairs opposite it, as if to invite guests or consultations. Locked pristine white metal medicine cabinets, a wall with shelves of scientific books, specimen jars carefully arranged and labeled. The floor is interesting: under the rug, there is a pattern of alternating colour tiles, grey and white, almost resembling a checkerboard.

Abaddon/Olivia: In an almost metaphor moment, Abaddon discovers that the tall Grandfather clock in the room has no hands. Even this broken clock can’t be right twice a day—and she’s running out of time. In a fit dissonance, she overturns the clock and breaks it. From the loudspeaker comes one of the managers: “Please do not break any items in the room that do not easily break themselves.” Abaddon curses under her breath: seemed easily broken to her. Kiara/Jairus: Jairus has gone to studying the laptop; when he touched the trackpad, the computer asks for a Password. He types in a few attempts, but nothing comes of it; in fact, he has one try left before the computer gets entirely locked. Kiara notices his struggle and comes over to brainstorm and observe: she notices the keyboard, which seems unusual. After studying it a moment, she realizes she must have the Password—but can’t help jabbing Jairus over it. She, a young girl, figured out the answer when a hundreds-year-old man couldn’t. It sounds shakily familiar to their current situation... as she wryly types in the password that unlocks the computer (can you figure it out?), she throws out how hard it must be to have a young girl finding easy answers to all of his problems: the cure and the password both. How long can Jairus keep his calm when she’s hitting his rawest nerves?

Adele/Crowley: Adele is studying the book case, trying to see if anything seems particularly out of place. After shuffling through some of the books, she finds no discerning markers, no torn pages, no handwriting, nothing dog-eared. She puts each book back and tries for another: methodical, thorough. Crowley sees her doing this and laughs at her. Crowley does not like a sheep who bends over backwards, who does things as expected, so she proceeds to throw barbs at Adele as she looks. Adele is not really sure how to deal with someone not liking her, even every demon and sinner she has ever met does. Adele quips back that at least she’s trying—to help, to solve the puzzle, anything, trying—and all Crowley does is nothing. Glowering, Crowley leans on the bookcase as they argue... only to find the bookcase moves. Swinging open the book case like a door, another, heavier door is revealed—but there seems NO visible way to open it.

Elijah/Ethan: Elijah is studying the small, framed medical diagrams on the wall. He sees there are four and wonders if the order of them might be some kind of code or combination—each one is labeled strangely: H7, A4, D5, E2. He can’t seem to locate anything that might use and 8-digit code—none of the drawers have locks or combinations, none of the locked cabinets need that many. He shouts to the room for help, thinking he has something, just not sure what. Ethan—used to working for what he gets—isn’t adverse to helping. But when he starts, Elijah just sits back and watches, waiting. It starts a contentious argument between them, where Ethan says that all Elijah wants is an easy life of fame and hasn’t worked for anything in his life—and Elijah gets defensive and says he doesn’t know him. Meanwhile, Ethan does figure out that removing the throw rug reveals the floor—which looks just like a chess board. The edges are even marked 1-8 and A-H. Maybe if each person in the party stands in one of the designated squares... something will happen.

ROOM THREE: ZOMBIE OUTBREAK.

After arriving at the Escape Room headquarters and checking in, you are sent directly right back out the door you came in. Out front is a school bus, yellow and beat-up looking, with spray paint all over it. It says things like “Turn back now!” and “QUARANTINE” and “Don’t open, dead inside.” Of course, you go inside. There’s no driver that you can see, but the thing can’t possibly be automated, so you just sit on the empty bus and wait as the rest of your party shuffles in. After everyone is seated, suddenly, each of you feel hands on your feet, anchoring you to the ground by the ankles—as you look down, a black cloth is placed over your head and zip-tied on. You can breathe, but the effect is obviously jarring and you can’t get it off.

The ride is a bumpy one, but any childhood notions of yelling ‘drive it off a cliff’ or similar to increase the ‘fun’ bumps of the ride have all but left your mind. You keep reminding yourself that of course, none of this is real, and maybe you even think some of it is hokey, but it’s hard not to get caught up as your body’s natural response is already flooding your mind with adrenaline and other survival neurochemicals. The bus slows to a snail’s pace, almost to the point where you think you’re not moving any more, and then begins to shake left and right, as if trying to be toppled over by forces you can’t see. Slowly, you start to feel tipped, and then suddenly righted, jarring. There’s a sound of the zip-ties being clipped off. Immediately, you take off your bag.

When you can see, the lights on the bus are all flickering, but you see no people except those in your party—no driver, no one to have tied the bags, no one to have held the feet, no one to have jostled your bus. You all get out, a little worse for wear, and head to what looks like a small warehouse. Entering, it’s all one room. You get to look around for about 3 minutes with the warehouse door still open. There’s an actor on the floor with his ‘guts’ ripped out, fake blood pouring from his entrails, appearing dead, a chain attaching him to the wall. There are 2 other, empty chains. There are 4 flashlights in various places in the room—4 too few. As you start to dart for the nearest one, the door slams behind you and locks and all of the lights go out. You’re in total darkness.

The bright, lit-up digital clock starts and you must figure out how to escape the warehouse, or else become zombie food! Search the room, leave no crate unopened, no shelf ignored, no stomach untested—

Assignments: (For clarity, those with flashlights are: Josh, Naomi, Dom, and Zoe.)

Josh/Magda: Magda immediately disregards the flashlight and heads for what she knows has to be a clue: she shoves her hands into the ‘stomach’ of the dead man. Triumphantly, she comes up with a key, but not what it goes to. Josh meets her with a flashlight, just in time for them both to jump back: where there once was an empty chain, now there is a living zombie trying to attack. They back away from the area and advise everyone else to do the same—but the zombie gains more chain (and more range to attack) the longer they’re in the room. Josh searches for something to put the key in among the warehouse crates and calls her reckless—that he should have done that, because if it was real, he’d be safer. She argues she isn’t fragile and has been through a lot herself—even lets drop she’s been sleeping with Crowley. How does that make him feel?

Satan/Naomi: Naomi, given her history, goes immediately for the flashlight. She starts to examine the shelves and begins to figure out that some boxes are marked with red dots. She starts to collect the boxes of varying sizes; they’re taped so well they can’t be opened by manual strength. Satan sees her struggling and goes to try himself, to the same lack of avail. This, of course, immediately gets under his skin: he can’t be foiled by boxes. Making them an unlikely team, the two bicker constantly as they try to figure out the puzzle—Satan making cruel and degrading remarks, Naomi biting back, but Satan’s blood starts to boil under the surface. By the time they find an empty shelf with red dots marked 1-6, it’s unsure if they can figure out the order without one of them snapping.

Renee/Dom: Renee and Dom both headed for the same flashlight and immediately start fighting. Renee, preferring to retain class and composure, lets him keep the flashlight, but not before she starts artfully picking him apart for his poor attempt to take her Church from her. How does Dom hold up under her acute interrogation? Perhaps in a moment of deflection or denial, Dom finds a lone object out on a crate: a skull, but one of those fake, glittery Halloween ones clearly not meant to resemble a human. It’s overt in its nonconformity, which means it’s a clue. Meanwhile, Renee notices a scale that had a small velvet bag on it—in front, instructions read that removing the bag without placing equal weight will detonate the warehouse. Perhaps they can solve this together, if they can stop tearing each other apart.

Zoe/Noah: Zoe gets one of the flashlights while Noah disregards and immediately gets to searching well away from the zombie. He finds a crate that seems to have a knocking coming from it. A knock sounds once, at even intervals, and figures the crate must mean something. Zoe, feeling the stress of everyone fighting about God and particularly creeped out that she's locked in a small room with Satan, tries to get Noah on her side. It does not go as planned. She flashes light on the box and sees there’s a sheet outlining Morse code. If they can figure out what code to ‘knock’ back to the box, perhaps it will open—if they can focus on the task and stop having an intense debate, that is.

Mystery Seeds Spread Around World…

The case of the mystery seeds showing up in U.S. mailboxes from shippers in China and other countries has gone global.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said consumers in at least 22 U.S. states and several other countries had received unsolicited packages of seeds. Canada, the U.K. and Australia all are investigating the matter.

The USDA, in a recorded radio broadcast released Wednesday night, revealed the world-wide scope of the seed shipments after thousands of people across the U.S. reported receiving seeds in the mail they didn’t order. States from Washington to Virginia have warned residents about the unsolicited packages, and the USDA said earlier this week that it was collecting the packages to test the seeds for anything of concern.

Multiple U.S. agencies are now investigating the seeds, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection.

Unsolicited seed packages have been on the USDA’s radar since at least early June, according to state agriculture officials. Gary Black, Georgia’s commissioner of agriculture, said his department contacted the USDA after a handful of state residents reported receiving such deliveries around June 2.

Osama El-Lissy, a deputy administrator for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, said the agency has so far identified 14 species of seeds, from mustard and morning glory to cabbage, rosemary and roses.

As of late Wednesday, there was no indication any of the seeds carry pests or diseases, according to the USDA.

The USDA also reiterated it has no evidence the packages are anything other than a “brushing scam.” In such scams, vendors selling through online retailers like Amazon.com pay “brushers” to place orders for their products, and packages with low-value or no contents are shipped to strangers. Brushers then pose as the buyers and post fake customer reviews to boost the vendor’s sales.

“These appear to be delayed packages due to Covid-19, not brushing,” a spokesperson for Amazon said in a statement. The company said it is working with its sellers, customers and government agencies to address concerns about the mailings. The USDA didn’t immediately comment.

More on the Mystery Seeds

Washington resident Jennifer Taylor received all the corn, broccoli and cucumber seeds that she had ordered from Amazon in time to plant her garden in the spring. Then last week a small package arrived in the mail, postmarked from China. It contained a packet of small, cream-colored seeds that, she said, made her nervous. Now, she said, “I want to burn them.”

In Louisiana, state inspectors are working to collect hundreds more packages sent from countries including China, Uzbekistan and the Solomon Islands. Other recipients say packages were sent from the United Arab Emirates and Kyrgyzstan.

Minnesota’s agriculture department is talking with the U.S. Postal Service about identifying and intercepting the packages––often marked as jewelry, toys, and other goods––before they are delivered to homes, said Denise Thiede, head of the agency’s seed program.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency this week instructed Canadians who had received such packages not to plant the seeds, while the U.K. government said it has been investigating packages of seeds marked as “ear studs” that citizens there received over the last month. A spokeswoman for Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment said the agency was looking into whether unsolicited seed mailings had been received in that country.

China’s Foreign Ministry earlier this week said that mailing labels on the seed packages were forged, and that China had asked the U.S. to send packages for investigation. Chinese government officials had no further comment Thursday.

In the U.S., state and federal officials are asking people who received unsolicited packages not to plant or handle the seeds, to keep them in their original packaging and turn them over to local or U.S. agriculture departments. Planting the seeds can potentially introduce invasive species and spread plant disease, said officials, who also advised against throwing the seeds in the trash for fear they would sprout in landfills.

Some consumers have received seeds in mislabeled packages that weren’t what they ordered. Others have received multiple seed packages after their initial order was delivered. Still others are finding small packets of seeds tucked into packages of other goods they ordered, such as clothing.

In Derbyshire, England, Susan Westerdale two months ago received a small package labeled “ear studs” with Chinese lettering on the address label. Inside was a pack of small, black seeds that looked like those of a cumin plant, she said. Ms. Westerdale had recently ordered seeds on Amazon and

eBay,

but the description and origin didn’t match that on her orders.

Some seed recipients said they had listed seeds on Amazon “Wish Lists” that were shared with other people. When seeds arrived in the mail, they thought they were gifts, but the seeds didn’t match those on their lists.

Sheree Long, who runs a nonprofit organization in Washington state, began receiving seed packages that appeared postmarked from China in late May, and had labels suggesting they were jewelry. She assumed they were a gift from someone with access to her Wish List. But they didn’t look like any of the seeds she had registered for. She tried to get the seeds to sprout by placing them on a moist paper towel in a sealed plastic bag. Nothing happened. More packages of seeds came, including a sixth one on Thursday.

“It’s very odd,” Ms. Long said. “I’m a big gardener so I knew something was off. These weren’t the seeds on my lists.”

Reports of unsolicited seed packets proliferated after state agriculture departments warned residents about them last week, including from people who had received unexplained seed deliveries weeks or months ago.

Across the U.S., state agriculture departments over the past week have dispatched plant inspectors and other employees to collect seeds from residents for analysis and investigation. In Alabama, agriculture commissioner Rick Pate said he sent inspectors to dig up seeds recipients had planted.

Logan Wilde, commissioner of Utah’s Department of Agriculture and Food, said his department is planting some of the seeds it has collected for testing and is awaiting new USDA guidance on how to destroy those left over. He also said the FBI had requested a meeting with his department this week. An FBI representative declined to comment.

Sid Miller, commissioner of Texas’ agriculture department, said he is sharing his personal email address and encouraging seed recipients to contact him. One woman this week sent him a photo of a plant she was raising from some bulbs that had arrived in one such package. “I said, you need to burn that right now,” Mr. Miller said.

Why didn't the priest and Levite stop to help? The priest probably didn't want to risk the possibility of ritual impurity. His piety got in the way of charity. The Levite approached close to the victim, but stopped short of actually helping him. Perhaps he feared that bandits were using a decoy to ambush him. The Levite put personal safety ahead of saving his neighbor.

God expects us to be merciful as he is merciful What does Jesus' story tell us about true love for one's neighbor? First, we must be willing to help even if others brought trouble on themselves through their own fault or negligence. Second, our love and concern to help others in need must be practical. Good intentions and showing pity, or emphathizing with others, are not enough. And lastly, our love for others must be as wide and as inclusive as God's love. God excludes no one from his care and concern. God's love is unconditional. So we must be ready to do good to others for their sake, just as God is good to us.

Jesus not only taught God's way of love, but he showed how far God was willing to go to share in our suffering and to restore us to wholeness of life and happiness. Jesus overcame sin, suffering, and death through his victory on the cross. His death brought us freedom from slavery to sin and the promise of everlasting life with God. He willingly shared in our suffering to bring us to the source of true healing and freedom from sin and oppression. True compassion not only identifies and emphathizes with the one who is in pain, but takes that pain on oneself in order to bring freedom and restoration.

The cross shows us God's perfect love and forgiveness Jesus truly identified with our plight, and he took the burden of our sinful condition upon himself. He showed us the depths of God's love and compassion, by sharing in our suffering and by offering his life as an atoning sacrifice for our sins upon the cross. His suffering is redemptive because it brings us healing and restoration and the fulness of eternal life. God offers us true freedom from every form of oppression, sin, and suffering. In 2016, we visited the Handy Museum on Beale St and noticed the home was hidden behind an overgrown tree, we also noticed missing shingles from the roof scattered in the yard, boards popping off the side of the house, missing light bulbs and light covers, and we learned there was no running water in the museum.  Dr. Carlos Handy, the only living grandson of WC Handy was shocked, disappointed, and angered to see the condition of the home.  The dilapidated home casts a poor reflection on the legacy of WC Handy Father of the Blues, and the Handy family.   We met with Mayor Strickland in February 2017 to discuss the future of the Handy Home and we were told the home belonged to the City of Memphis and was supposed to be transferred to the City years ago by the presumed owner and holder of the papers, Mr. Elkington.  The City claimed that as soon as the paperwork for the home was delivered by Mr. Elkington, the City would start repairs.  The City offered to inspect the home for Dr. Handy and agreed to send an Inspection Report to the Handys.  The inspection was completed and the report was delivered by Spring 2017.  We also requested an inventory and proof of insurance for the home, and neither have been delivered.  Over the last 30-plus years, the Handy Foundation has loaned Handy artifacts, family letters and photographs, and other Handy historical items to the museum. 

During that visit to Memphis we attempted to locate 659 Janette Street and learned from the City and Shelby County records that Memphis has never had a street named Janette.  However, there is a Jennette Place.  Realizing the name of street was incorrect we logically concluded that possibly the house number was incorrect.  We ordered a title search for 659 Jennette Place and learned Handy never owned that home.  A search of all properties on the block revealed that Mr. Handy purchased the home next door at 657 in January 1911.  Nearly 100 years later, the Handy’s home at 657 was destroyed by a fire and unceremoniously demolished in 2011 per the City records.  Let that fact set in for a moment, and you too will feel the deep blue-depression we are feeling at the Handy Foundation.  The neighbors still remember the fire. 

Today, there is no historic marker at 659 or 657 Jennette Place.  We have plans to apply for a historic marker to honor the place where Handy’s house stood at 657 Jenette Place in the neighborhood behind Stax Museum. WC Handy and his wife Elizabeth raised their family in a shotgun home at 657 Jennette Place, and the couple entertained their friends and neighbors and WC Handy composed great American standards including Beale Street Blues, Memphis Blues, and St. Louis Blues among countless other hits.

Why the editors of Handy’s autobiography used an erroneous address in WC’s autobiography Father of the Blues is a mystery to us.  The autobiography tracks the Handy’s move from a rental home on Ayers Street in Memphis to a home they purchased in Memphis.  Handy dictated the book into a Dictaphone.   We have a Handy Dictaphone on display at the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis along with a Handy typewriter.   Father of the Blues was inducted into the Literary Hall of Fame at the Blues Foundation in May 2017.  The book display will be open to the public until May 2018.

Then we heard about the 1990 lawsuit filed in Chancery Court of Shelby County, The Blues Foundation v Joe Savarin & John Elkington et all, and read the Court Order signed by the Judge stating John Elkington owns the Handy Home.  A search of public records of Elkington’s business and personal inventories during his bankruptcy and divorce proceedings does not list the Handy House as an asset. A public records search of the City’s assets, the assets of Beale Street Development Corporation, Beale Street Management’s assets, and the Blues Foundation assets does not reveal a claim of ownership by any entity listed.  The IRS was unable to locate an owner by a name-based reverse search of historical assets.

However, we did find the Handy Home listed as the keystone asset of the public records of the multi-million-dollar federal grants applications submitted to the Federal Government for Beale St to receive the Historical Designation and all benefits including millions in grants and millions in tax breaks.  In the grant applications, the relocated Handy Home is positioned on Beale St to be the ‘Gateway to Beale Street.’  Perhaps in the haste to get the grant applications written and submitted for federal funding and tax breaks, a title search was never pulled and the wrong home was inadvertently moved to Beale St.  Or perhaps the error was discovered when the researchers realized Janette St did not exist, and the decision was made to move the home anyway.  I am disturbed by the current sign in front of the home on Beale St boldly displaying the statement ‘The house was moved here from 659 Janette St…’, a street that never existed in Memphis.  Whoever printed the sign or directed the printing of the sign must have known of the error, and decided to print the inaccurate address with little regard for the actual name of the street or the home’s provenance.

WC Handy’s company, Handy Brothers Music Company, Inc. will turn 100 years old in 2018 and the Board of the Handy Foundation is planning Centennial Celebrations for the oldest American entertainment company still family owned and operated.  Events will commence in multiple cities in multiple states.  Before the Centennial Celebrations begin, we ask that the owner of the Handy Home come forward, claim ownership and disclose who sold or transferred the home to them. 

If the home was never owned by WC Handy, then the owner must stop using the Handy name to promote the Holloway’s home AND return all gifted or loaned Handy artifacts to the Handy Foundation.  If the true owner proves the Handy Home’s historical significance and provenance then we ask that the needed repairs, maintenance and upkeep commence at once so Blues lovers everywhere may visit the Handy Home in 2018 to celebrate the life and music of WC Handy Father of the Blues and America’s oldest family owned and operated entertainment company Handy Brothers Music Company, Inc.
