MC: friend. He once helped MC get new paints 10 minutes before an exam when she realized they ran out (MC had to pay him 5 bucks for that).
Ayn: Cousin from the mother's side. Desmond stopped seeing Ayn after Quinn died; they had grown apart from then. They started getting along once again after joining St. Shelter.
Sebastian: Desmond finds Sebastian annoying; his tactics of promoting his club is horrible and he is also known to be a scammer. Despite all that, Desmond can't help but constantly tease and push Sebastian around. (They're besties, your honor.)
Clarence: childhood best friend. Clarence used to be online friends with Desmond when they were kids; they were close then, but they stopped contacting each other after Clarence got busy with his studies. Desmond’s change in personality made himself a stranger to Clarence; he has a hard time believing Desmond is a delinquent now.

Backstory: Desmond grew up in a strict household. He was well-mannered and polite as a kid. However, he began to change during his freshman year at St. Shelter.
Academy life: He is a business major in his third year. He has quite an infamous reputation around the campus. Students say he's rude and careless, and doesn't give a damn about the rules – however, he's the top student in his class.
𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬
Gavin’s pain in the ass™. Desmond tried to sneak into the oractice room several times and got caught.
Delinquent on the outside, absolute math nerd on the inside.
His father is David Anderson. He’s a part of the Feinz group.
(here, Anderson is inspired by the Inquisitor Anderson seen in Godheim.)
Desmond said that his mother is Quinn's sister. His mother works as a banker.
Desmond met Ayn’s father once. And he never wishes to see him again.
He is actually close to O'Connor. He helped O'Connor run the Student Council when he was still president.
Desmond is good friends with Gerald, Finn, and Derek.
He's the roommate of Gerald.
He's also known to get the first prize in a math competition; students contact him to help with their homeworks. (Of course, Desmond asks them to pay for his services)
Desmond was once caught sneaking out to smoke during a camping trip where he was paired with Clarence.
Desmond is interested in learning how to play the guitar. He even tried to sneak into the practice room without permission; which made Sebastian furious, but Desmond continued to fiddle around with the guitar.
His favorite dish is chazuke.
“I won't join any clubs.” “Hey, I heard Sebastian is holding another meeting for their upcoming concert-” “real shit?👀”
Takes Gerald out to treat him hotpot.
Hangs out with Dominic. Tries to make Dominic think that Desmond doesn't know Gerald at all.
"And Gerald said he liked hotpot," Dominic complained. "Like, can you believe it?"
"Yep... Gerald, haha..." Desmond chuckled nervously, avoiding Dominic's gaze. "Don't even know who he is."
Has a huge manga collection. Often chats with Lars about it too.
He has a pet dog named Dallas at home. And at school, his pet cactus is named Brad.
Affection Items: Fermat's Last Theorem, game CD, soda can, comic book.

THIS STORY IS LOVINGLY ADOPTED FROM GravityFallsFreak7 (https://ift.tt/3bzvKpd)! THANK THEM FOR THIS EXISTING. TO READ THE FIRST PARTS, GO HERE THE ORIGINAL STORY: (https://ift.tt/2yDhHR6).
[Continues here] Now, afraid and alone, having been left to fend for himself without Bill, Dipper -now Alkaid- has no idea what to do. At least he had managed to get food when he was with Cipher, and someone to be around with, but now, where could he go? From here, the mysteries to this story start to pile up... Will someone find him? Will Ford try to kill him again? Will he ever see his beloved twin again? Will he embrace the animal Cipher has forced him to become, and lose his newly-regained humanity? Who is this girl helping him? And why is she not like everyone else? Will Cipher even come back for him?! Will he want to go back to him?! Will the girl let him go back?! Who knows...
And remember, if a blond man with an eyepatch ever comes up to you offering a deal, shake his hand, and take his offer. It'll always be worth it... one way or another...

.Hack//G.U. Light Novels Vol. 1-4 - Final Thoughts
Tumblr media
WELL. That was...that was something. These books were a TRIP man. I’m kind of speechless.
Thoughts:
-I liked the novel-version of the story better than the games. There, I said it. It was waaaay more about the lore and philosophical stuff and waaaay more in continuity with IMOQ/SIGN than the games. It cut out the fat of having too many characters, too much focus on the arena and it actually EXPLAINED THINGS. -mind blown-
-I was wondering why this was a 4 volume adaptation of a 3 volume game but then I got to book 2 and it was basically a book long recap of IMOQ/SIGN and I was like...oh. But it was so worth it! I understand so much more now.
-I don’t care if the novels aren’t canon, they are in my heart.Just the fact that Ryo acknowledges Sora in the novels already makes them superior. I was screaming of joy when they FINALLY mentioned him:
Tumblr media
-Ovan’s even more of an annoying asshole in the novels but it’s better because they call him out on it! They call him a weirdo like a hundred times and the fact that he talks in riddles is a plot point instead of something we’re supposed to find cool.
-SO much attention given to the player characters in this. Their real names are used constantly. This is what was missing from the games and the anime, this is what I wanted. Yesssssss.
-I liked Endrance a lot better because he didn’t randomly fall in love with Haseo for no reason and he was a lot more cynical and sassy. He felt more realistic and less of a weird predator gay stereotype.
-Ovan saying the word “vagina” several times was hilariously surreal
-DEEP explanation of how Aura works, how epitaphs work, how Morganna worked, how Anthroposophy inspired The World etc. I liked how they incorporated the “6 senses” into how the epitaphs work and the Buddhist concepts. I was pretentious af but interesting nonetheless
-The changes made to Aina’s character were heartbreaking and added an interesting angle to Ovan’ character. It made him feel more pathetic and crazy
-I really enjoyed the moment when Haseo told Ovan “we’re not the type” when talking about how they aren’t heroes like Kite. It’s interesting to think that IMOQ was the archetypal hero legend and GU is more of an anti-hero story
-More queer baiting with Ovan calling Haseo “beautiful” and Haseo thinking about his love for Ovan. Although Haseo doesn’t really end up with anyone in this so...?
-Shino waking up in the end was such an after thought like...okay.
Things I didn’t like:
-WTF was up with the scene where Ovan tortures Pi to death randomly? First of all, it’s really gross and creepy that he singles out PI. Second, uhhhh we’re supposed to sympathize with him after that? Yeah it’s a game but...they make it very clear she can feel it IRL. That whole scene was gratuitous.
-They kept calling Ovan stuff like “beautiful beast” -barf- stop feeding his ego
-The implications that Pi had the hots for her half brother were definitely unnecessary
-They must have used the phrase “connected to their PCs beyond their monitors and controllers” about 50 thousand times. Like...we get it...they’re special.
-Haseo’s winged form was pretty cheesy and over-the-top anime. I did like his Skeith staff tho.
-Some lines just threw me off completely and didn’t make sense. For example, in the last chapter Pi was like “Ovan let you name his daughter,” to Haseo. I’m guessing this was a typo or something because whaaaat?
-Confusing expressions. Like...wtf is an archetype and what’s a “borderline MMORPG”? Half the time I felt like they were just using random words to sound cool...
-No Alkaid :’(
I feel like I have so much more to say and now I’m mad that I didn’t make a post volume-by-volume. I think Dot Hack works best in novel form. I can honestly say that I enjoyed AI Buster, CELL, Another Birth, and GU more than their respective games and anime. In game form especially, the complicated concepts of the story kind of get lost in the gameplay. These concepts need to be fleshed out with long exposition dumps and deep conversation. All in all, it’s probably just best to read the books alongside the games and anime to get the full experience as the creators intended.
I give the .Hack//GU novels an 8 out of 10. Very enjoyable reads.

.Hack//Alcor - Final Thoughts
Ah, I love the little side stories in dot hack. I think I enjoy them more than the main storyline because they’re so digestable and less caught up with being cool & edgy. Also, you get to see the .Hack universe in different art styles!
Notes:
-Everyone looked so cute in this! I feel like if I had to describe this style I would call it kind of chibi compared to some other entries. Close to Legend of Twilight but with a darker palette. I really like how the artist drew Gaspard and Pi!
-Fun naming conventions! Although it’s a little repetitive since Albireo was also named after a star. I really enjoyed the authors explanation that Alkaid was a brighter star in the big dipper than Nanase/Alcor.
-Nanase was a pretty annoying main character. She was spineless and whiney. Like, I get that that was the point but it’s pretty hard to root for characters that just mope about how pathetic they are.
-I first read this manga before I knew anything about G.U. and really enjoyed it! Now, reading it for a 2nd time, I see how many references to the game there are. She even does the lucky animal quest which I thought was a nice touch (that’s where I am in the game right now so I could relate lol)
-It was nice to see Silabus get some love from the girls but honestly this would have been better as a yuri. Nanase and Alkaid had the chemistry, I felt it.
-It was pretty stupid how Nanase mimicked Alkaid in the game and in real life. At first I thought she knew that her classmate was Alkaid but then they acted like it was a plot twist and I was like...seriously? What are the odds!?
-That awkward end scene where Nanase is moving and just has a computer chilling on her bare floor with The World turned on...why?
-Apparently Saku was an Alkaid groupie before she stan’d Endrance. Talk about shallow.
-I really like the “tail” on Alkaid and Nanase’s belts. It looks like the tail that guy has in My Hero Academia lol
-I was pleasantly surprised to read (on the wiki) that this manga is in-continuity. Nanase goes onto be a Moon Tree member with a male avatar and she’s also mentioned in CELL. I always thought this one was isolated from the rest of the series or maybe even an AU...
-This manga convinced me to do the lucky animal quest haha
-Great use of chim chims and lucky animals for extra cuteness factor
-I don’t really understand the ending of this. Nanase helps Alkaid and is like “well, I guess I can graduate from the world now...” Why? I guess the point is that she wants to stop copying Alkaid and become her own character? Maybe?
-I was happy that Kaede had a role in this since she doesn’t do much in the games.
I give .Hack//Alcor a 7.5 out of 10. I think it’s a really cute one-off that I could see myself returning to in the future when I’m craving some fluff :)
