My sleep deprived brain just had a thought,, that I wanted to share with the class: OG!SQQ gives Squidward’s vibes. Idk how to explain it, but at their core, they’re very similar. Am I the only one who sees it? Do I just need to sleep some more? Will I get a healthy sleep schedule someday?
LMAO
sure, at the surface they are both curmudgeon-y and picky as all fuck.
but no, their cores are not similar, and let me explain
=
squidward's attitude comes from being stuck in retail/service worker purgatory. he has an inherent sense of self-worth and believes he deserves more than he is currently given. he also seems to come from a relatively middle-class (fwiw in bikini bottom, under the sea) family that had access to a university where he could feasibly encounter old money individuals such as squilliam fancyson, and is able to save up to afford housing in a development community despite the fast food job.
(does that imply bikini bottom has a livable minimum wage?? from mr. krabs???? wow)
=
shen jiu's attitude is bluster from someone who clawed their way up to the top and damn it all you'll have to pry it from his cold, dead hands. he doesn't have an inherent sense of self-worth, which is why he's more vicious about protecting what he has earned. he also isn't working a service job--his position is prestigious and basically a 'started from the bottom now we here'. he did everything he could to survive and make it where he is now, and still fights to maintain that position.
=
one, while in a downtrodden job, has always been part of society and will remain so. the other was disenfranchised to the extreme, and can easily become so again (à la qht accusation in pidw)
pride bitchiness vs fear bitchiness
=
you probably do need more sleep (as in, many people don't sleep enough so probability says you're likely in that group of the population), and healthy sleep schedules aren't a one-time permanent achievement so don't worry too much (in fact, that will make it even harder to sleep).
it comes and goes.

you make me wanna go to London & England so bad urghhhh like i’ve only been out of the country once (to Canada for a family reunion) but it sounds so prettyyyyy & i’m so sorry that cov*d is messing everything up and i hope you can see your relatives soon :(
now to address the whole english speaking/writing: I FIND THAT SO WEIRD DUHSKSJ i don’t know how an english speaking person could say that if you don’t write it 100% grammatically correct.... that it’s wrong? when literally, over here at least, WE’RE SO GRAMMATICALLY INCORRECT HAHHAAH in both the way we talk and write!! and lol you’re welcome,, AND THE PARAGRAPH DID MAKE SENSE HDHSJSH & your rant is fine because... that is actually a bit ??? bc no one writes with 100% grammar lol
OH MY GOSH (see this uppercase thing is addictive) YOU STUDIED LATIN FOR 6 YEARS??? that’s really cool 🥺 the way that you know/speak 3+ languages i- NOT EVEN 3+ LIKE 6+ (german, english, latin, french, serbian, italian, and everything that comes with latin lmao) even if it’s just a tiny bit like wowee. it is really fascinating!!! i had the opportunity to take latin and i... didnt. i took art instead BUT ONLY CUZ MY FRIENDS WERE IN THAT CLASS AND ART LOOKED FUN IM SORRY
PLEASE WHY DO YOU KNOW EVERYONE?? that sounds so fricking cool tell your mom (mum or mama it’s really fine lol) that she sounds awesome. i think Jamaica would be fun either way!! i mean it looks pretty from pictures? i was a baby so i honestly have no recollection hahaha
LMAOO NOT U SAYING THIS IS LONGER THAN SOME OF MY FICS- PLEASE GIRL IM TELLING YOU I VERBALLY LAUGHED HAHAHAHAHAH but yea you really don’t need to apologize i like reading everything you say 🥺 HDKSHS AND UR FINE WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT ME BEFORE uhhh hmm uhh lemme think i, well, i saw chaos walking yesterday (big tom holland fan over here) and it was alright.. my mom acted a fool at all the jump scares LMAO but it was funny... since i’m talking about movies (this is hella random i know) but i like shark movies HDKJSSJ my favorite is the meg (it’s so good ohmigosh) and the 47 meters down movies aren’t bad either... i have two younger brothers... iiiii AM IN LOVE WITH MUSIC PHEW anddd i’m homeschooled (i think i mentioned that lol) i think that’s a good amount ahahaha AND IM HUNGRY RN JDHSJ
now. please. let me address the edit. i just want you to know that.. when i talk about your fics and i finish them and everything i’m not looking for more? like obviously if you’re writing i’m gonna read it but you don’t need to feel pressured or anything (idk if you do) to put more fics out lol like they’re great and i’m just sending the praise bc i love the ones that are there :’) but i’m so happy you’re working through your writers block!!! yay so so happy for you!!! and PUHLEASE anything you write is fantastic, i feel the exact same way when i write but girl. you’re fine. it’s gonna be great. (idk if this made any sense but... okay)
(and my cousin calls her mom mama so it’s really okay hahah i even call my mom mama sometimes) (and where you got the number “16 sentences” beats me but i still cracked up) (is this me pretending i had tags? maybe) HAHAHAHA OK BYE ❤️❤️ why did this take me so long to send i have no clue, AND WHY AM I OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING I SAID SHAJSHSJ ANYWAY BYE btw i love us too... like iconic // lovely anon 💓
me reading this:
Tumblr media
also the dedication you put into sending me stuff— like with the laptop and phone and ahsksk 🥺🥺🥺
i’ll update you when i’ve started uni btw, i’m getting more and more excited every single day haha but i still have 3 weeks until it starts and even then I’ll obviously have to get used to it and everything, but you’re making me even more excited about it sksjshsg
yeah i wanna go to england too dkshsh let’s be sad together over the fact the we can’t travel eksjsh😔😭 but hopefully the wait will make it even better in the end <33 also i talk to loads of relatives over the phone at least once a week so it’s not too bad for me! but i miss their house 😭lmao
and i knowww snshsh so many native english speakers just make so many mistakes— and obviously i get that some things are slang but some things are simply wrong ajsh, the thing is no one has ever told me that my english is bad (i know it’s not bad anyway, but i’m still insecure) or no one has ever pointed out any mistakes, but yeah it’s mostly just insecurity dkshsg but yes thanks for saying what you said (previously as well as in this ask)😌🥰
Okay now for latin— girlll i don’t blame u for choosing art over latin esp. when all of your friends are doing art as well!! I’d choose art over latin as well lol skshsg but in year 6 we had to choose between latin and french, and at the time i didn’t like french? which was dumb of me and now i wanna learn french ekdhs but i don’t regret choosing latin at all bc if i properly learn french one day then i’ll already know understand loads of stuff (or at least some stuff lol) just thanks to latin 😌😌 but still, art>>>latin skskshshgs
I wanna watch chaos walking too!!! But i don’t get when/where/how it’s out lmao, cinemas are still closed here so i’ll either have to wait or find it somewhere online... il*egally 🥰 i don’t have high expectations at all btw but i like daisy and tom and the dog🥺 so i think i’ll enjoy it
GIRL SHARK FILMS SHARK FOLMS SKSJSHSHS okay so there are a few classics i haven’t watched yet, and also a few new ones that i haven’t seen yet BUT I LOVE SHARK FILMS SO MUCH SKSHSGSGSKK the first like proper shark film i ever watched was the shallows (which i like but my brain is still too small to comprehend what happened at the end (i mean i get it but i just can’t imagine it— idek if you’ve seen the film but skshhs)) and after watching it three times it does get a bit boring (but now whenever i see pictures or videos of big waves i’m just waiting for a shark to show up like come ON SKSJSG
Tumblr media
^^^that pic/scene really traumatised me sksjsh but i still like the film
I only watched jaws like a few months ago, and i get that it’s a classic and also that it’s old and they just didn’t have the best.. equipment or special effects or whatever but i mean... look at meg and then look at jaws.... no disrespect to jaws at ALL but the meg is so much cooler. (That one scene on the boat where the shark just JUMPS OUT OF THE WATER AND SKSJSHHSUSJHA i get such a shock every time it’s so good (and the dog aww aksjshssli 🥺🥺🥰 and the boy with the ice cream lmao he’s iconic)
47 metres down, wow, i liked that film too. (i’ve only watched the original/first one i think) i mean that is such a fucking nightmare scenario like ALSJDHSNEMSKDJSHSJSKWBALSODUEWBSLDKHDJSNSKSKSHSGEBWKAISGSHEKEKSKLDJDJDHDHSHAGGA (that’s the best way i can express my feelings about that scenario lmao)
oh and i’ve recently been watching more horror films but i don’t know if they’re for me... I like the thrill and whatever but i just end up being scared for my life when i have to go to the bathroom at night or when i’m trying to sleep bc suddenly my mind is flooded with all the scary shit from the films 💀💀💀
and music i mean... you know those people who just don’t listen to music? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM???? i honestly like all genres especially in the last year, i am IN LOVE with Nicki Minaj + Megan andddd Stormzy and i like Harry Styles but i prefer his first solo album (and obviously one direction has bangers i have a throwback 1D session at least once a month), I also love MGK especially his new stuff and otherwise i mostly listen to german artists lmao. So who do you like?💖 (WHY DO I FEEL LIKE YOURE GONNA SAY SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SKAHAGUS IF YOU LISTEN TO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MUSIC DONT JUDGE ME AJSHDJS) (i know you’re not gonna judge me but)
++ @ the thing you said about writing, don’t worry, i don’t feel pressured at all!!! (not by you and not by anybody else.. except myself sometimes lol) and i’m just very happy that you liked my fics 🥰🥰🥰 and if i start telling people that i’m writing a fic then sometimes it puts a bit of (healthy) pressure on me. like yes sometimes it really is writer’s block, but sometimes i really am just lazy ddkshhd so now that i’ve told you i’m writing a fic i might get my ass up quicker than i would if i hadn’t told anyone 😌😌😌

5 Things I’m Doing to Reset my life for 2021
2021 resolutions ideas
OKAY! We’re a whole six days into the new year. How are you guys feeling?
I know lots of you probably already have your 2021 resolutions ideas in place and you’re making progress on that. But even if you’re a little late, don’t worry. There’s still so much time to show up for yourself, babe! And I get feeling a little off.
The last few weeks — scratch that, the last year — has been kinda insane….
For literally not being able to go anywhere, our schedule has been NUTS!! I got a lot done, but also I feel like I’ve been kinda just barely going from one day to the next, buried in work, eating way off my norm, not cleaning up — like basic cleaning, but not like “actual” cleaning.
Tumblr media
I am READY for a change. Thank goodness for the LSF 30 Challenge we’re doing rn, this is such a good way to get myself back on track. On top of that, I’ve been mulling over some 2021 resolutions ideas and changes that I know are gonna make this year awesome for me.
Ready? Here are 5 main MACRO goals I’m planning to really help reset and get back to my best life in 2021!
Operation Abs Comeback
If you watched my vid about resetting for the new year, you know that I’ve been hitting the cheese and wine pretty hard. And we’ve been ordering out a ton, too, which is SO not like me. All in all, it’s left me feeling low energy and pretty much no motivation.
So when I was thinking about my 2021 resolutions ideas, I knew nutrition had to be on the list. And the 2-day Detox and the Hot Body Meal Plan (I’m doing the hypo one rn) are super key here!! I’m getting back to gluten-free, dairy-free living and, girl, I’m already feeling soooo much better!
Additionally, I’ve also learned that snacks are so important for me. I’m really not about restricting your diet. Instead, I think it’s way better and easier to just eat so much good stuff you don’t really have room for junk. For me, that means eating like five meals/snacks a day. So I’m stocking my pantry to get back on my snack game! So awesome go-tos for me this year have been:
Healthy nuts
Apples
Chomps turkey sticks
Protein powder (brown rice and pea, like Orgain, is my fave)
I’m sticking with it bc I’m ready to see those abs POP!
Tumblr media
Deep house purge by the end of the month!
I am NOT waiting for spring cleaning! I feel like I spent 2020 like almost on pause. I did basic cleaning, for sure, but not anything major. Which is nuts because we’re all spending so much time at home, but I know a lot of girls feel the same way I do!
I have my whole plan mapped out and I’m gonna get my house deep, deep cleaned by the end of the month, then leave two weeks to tackle the daunting Ryan stuff. Here’s my game plan:
Week 1: Kitchen Cabinets
Week 2: My Office
Week 3: Hall Cabinets
Week 4: My Closet
Week 5: Ryan’s Closet (he never gets rid of stuff!)
Week 6: Garage (terrifying!)
Having this plan and committing myself to doing it right at the start of the year will help me make my 2021 resolutions ideas happen!
Workout before 2 p.m.
My training has been pretty good through 2020, but I’ve definitely been skimping on the Daily 10 in the LSF app, which I usually love as a bonus workout! So I’m committing to filming myself doing the Daily 10 every single day in January and sharing it with you on Insta to hold myself accountable.
Tumblr media
Also, to keep myself on track with my fitness 2021 resolutions ideas, I’m committing to working out every day in the morning or at lunch. I know that if I don’t get it done by 2 p.m., there’s a chance the day will just slip away. So I’m full-on scheduling an hour for myself to work out every day in my LSF #GOALS Planner.
An hour seems like overkill, but a good chunk of that is so I can foam roll afterward. 2021 is going to be all about recovery for me!
Writing weekly affirmations
Look, 2020 was rough. So when I was looking for 2021 resolutions ideas, I wanted to keep things positive.
Each week, I’m going to write myself an awesome affirmation. I’ll put it in my planner, on a post-it, wherever I can find! My goal is to give myself some extra love this year.
Tumblr media
“GYSD” days!!
Um, hi. Hello. I can’t be the only one who plans to do all this stuff, like house cleaning or work projects, and then somehow never has the time!
At last, I’m getting serious about my scheduling. Seriously, this might be my big theme of the year. I’m scheduling my deep clean, my workouts, my snacks, how regularly I write affirmations for myself — you get the idea. Making and keeping a schedule helps me get back to my better routines, and after a short time of doing it, I’m seriously feeling like a new person already.
I’m also adding Get Your Sh*t Done days to my schedule. With these big full-day blocks, I can help myself stay on top of those lists that pile up. With a whole day where I can just deal with those to-dos that have been on the back of my mind, I know I can make it happen.
Overall, these are my macro goals, but I know there will be so many more smaller goals that pop up throughout the year! What are your 2021 resolutions ideas, babe? Let’s tackle them together!

Reflection
i need to stop getting distracted and procrastinating and “treating myself” bc i’ve been doing that way too often
i really want to just chat with someone rn. idk why im so hyper so late at night. i think staying up late is one of the things i define myself by. i almost dont want to sleep before midnight bc that ruins my character. no, not almost. i dont. straight up.
im just gonna try and write a quick thing here before getting back to homework. i think another thing is i know that i dont have a lot of homework to do do im avoiding my homework so that i have an excuse to stay up later. shoot. this is a deeper psychological problem. even when given the opportunity to sleep early, i dont take it. i think i just really need to ask myself if it’s worth it. to be losing sleep. to not be so in control. to have poor memory. and i know im writing these things in an effort to convince myself that i should make more of an effort to sleep earlier but i also know that im too stubborn for that and will probably just continue to sleep late but this doesnt define me! i do want to sleep earlier. there are so many other things that define who i am and theyre actually healthy. im just making life so much harder for myself by purposely staying up so late all the time.
i also want to make more of an effort to be more aware of other people’s feelings. i think i do speak without thinking sometimes and i dont realize how it’s affecting those around me. today, i remember i mentioned how i was so relieved to have gotten 100% on my graphic design project while my friend got a 64% and i didnt know how to respond. i do think i was bragging a bit but i really was proud of myself. i just set a really high bar for myself and feel bad when i dont reach it. but thinking in his shoes, i have struggled in the past. and being in an environment with pro graphic designer and me, a novice, it did feel like my best was never good enough a lot of the time. and i dont want anyone else to feel like that bc it really does suck. theres no way around that. John kept complaining again today and I could hear that he was a bit proud of his friendship with me and i just didnt have the heart to tell him that i didnt want to take graphic design classes with him next semester bc he’s been a burden to me lately. i dont want to keep taking care of you bc youre holding me back from doing more. i am your friend and will continue to be but im tired of babysitting you and spoonfeeding you all the time. i wish you the best of luck in your endeavors but please, dont sign up for the same classes as me. i know he isnt going to actually sign up until way later and im just gonna hope that his schedule wont work out with mine. and if not, it’s just 2 classes that im in with him. how bad could that be? right? i hope? i dont know if i should say something or not bc i dont want to be a bitch about it and i know hes going to talk hella smack about me and be mad at me but honestly, im not going to back down from this decision. bc it’s how i feel. and if it’s gonna cost me our friendship, then maybe it wasnt meant to be in the first place. im a blunt person and i will do and take what i want. and i dont think this is just a case of me being overly selfish. he literally made someone else do the classwork for him today bc he was “bad” at it. he didnt even try. he just complained the whole time. and i tried to call him out on it  but he also gets so defensive about it and comes up with a plethora of excuses. you cant live your whole life blaming the world for who you are.
finally, i was a bit touched today bc my dad messaged me, asking if i could come home for thanksgiving. he seems to really miss me, hehehe. he was even so willing as to sell his old macbook pro to help fund my homecoming and i felt so bad bc i really dont think im deserving of that much love and sacrifice. i eventually convinced him that itd be better for everyone i just came home for winter and not at all during thanksgiving. but i also just felt really shitty bc i didnt feel as bad as i wanted to feel. i was def taking it for granted and i dont want to do that. ive been getting more and more spoiled recently bc ive been getting what i want, when i want without having to think of the consequences. i think it’s bc i have the luxury of being able to freely choose what i want to sacrifice. i would rather starve than to get a bad grade. i would rather go days without clean hair so that i can eat. my priorities are all out of place. and i know that but i also dont know how to fix it.
i also miss my free talks with andrew. i think im a lot more nervous now. i was blunt with him earlier and he actually responded positively to it, phew. but, yeah, idk. i think it’s in part to just time and us growing apart and hanging out in person and now being so many miles apart from each other. but it’s definitely different from before and idk if that’s a good or bad thing. i get that we’re both busy people but i dont think i consider him my “best friend” anymore which is a bit disheartening. we just grew apart. and thats that. and i am genuinely happy that hes doing better mentally and emotionally and im more than happy to be here for him. i think we’re just trying to figure our own shit out as we continue to grow but i also feel like theres this block or barrier that wasnt there before. and now im a bit afraid to say or do certain things around him. and i do want to feel free with him but i dont. not anymore at least. and it sucks. but i also dont think it’s his fault at all and i definitely dont blame him for that. it’s just.. what it is, i guess.

How to Beat 12 Common Obstacles to Losing Weight
Whether you’d like to drop five pounds or 50, it can feel like there are a million weight-loss obstacles standing in your way.
Losing weight isn’t always easy, and there might be many mental, logistical, and lifestyle factors to overcome to reach your goal. But don’t despair: You can shed those stubborn pounds with a little soul-searching (do I really hate cauliflower?) and some practical tips (wait, I can roast cauliflower?? This is SO GOOD!).
To maximize your chances of success, start by taking a few minutes to identify your biggest obstacles to losing weight and see how you can overcome them. Here are 12 of the most common ones that get in the way of losing weight.
(And check out these dramatic “Before and After” stories if you need proof and inspiration!)
Diet Obstacles
Obstacle: You don’t have time to cook.
Solution: Do some prep work.
No one is denying that it’s easier to order takeout than it is to make something from scratch. But cooking healthy meals doesn’t have to be a major time-suck. Some tasty options — like a main course salad — don’t even require any cooking at all. The key is to think about what you’ll eat long before your tummy starts rumbling.
Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CFT, a dietitian, personal trainer, and co-author of The Nutrition Twins’ Veggie Cure, suggests taking some time over the weekend to plan out your meals for the following week, stock up on ingredients, and chop up some veggies and protein so you’ll be in good shape when you peek into the fridge after a long day at work.
Obstacle: You hate being hungry.
Solution: Load up on low-calorie, filling foods.
Surprise: You don’t have to eat tiny amounts food to lose weight. In fact, you’re better off not depriving yourself or you might end up backsliding pretty quickly.
“The best way to feel full — and lose weight — is to fill up on a combo of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean protein,” says Lakatos Shames. “[Processed or simple] carbs by themselves will give you energy, but you’ll come crashing down soon after because you don’t have any protein and fiber to slow down digestion.”
She’s also a fan of keeping lots of non-starchy veggies on hand, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and squash. “Drizzle on flavorful vinegars and spices to make them more interesting. Or roast them so they caramelize and taste sweet,” she suggests. Not only are they filled with loads of nutrition (vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients), the fiber and water will help fill you up.
Obstacle: You don’t like the taste of healthy food.
Solution: Be patient and keep trying new things.
First of all, you may not really know what good, nutritious food tastes like. (Hint: It’s not plain, flavorless chicken and limp, over-cooked veggies.) Watch a healthy cooking show to learn the basics and experiment with some new recipes. Need some ideas? You can find a slew of options right here.
But if you just don’t think anything will taste good unless it’s deep-fried and loaded with salt or sugar, be patient. As you build out your recipe repertoire and try new things, you’ll find foods that you enjoy, and even ones that don’t seem appealing right now might eventually become your favorites.
Pro tip: Use healthy spices to boost the taste and flavors in your dishes to point your tastebuds in the right direction.
Obstacle: You think nutritious food is too expensive.
Solution: Make smart choices.
Spendy organic produce is great, but it’s not essential for good health or weight loss, says Lakatos Shames. Try to shop for what’s in-season — it’s almost always cheaper — and remember that frozen vegetables and fruit are usually as nutritious as their fresh counterparts.
Lakatos Shames also advises clients on a budget to eat more vegetarian- and plant-based protein while limiting expensive items, like meat.
And if you think that fast-food combo meal is cheaper than a healthy salad, think again. Research suggests that staying fit and healthy could save you cold, hard cash in health-related expenses down the road.
And even in the short-term, losing weight can be cost-effective if you want it to be, says Holly Lucille, ND, RN, a Los Angeles-based naturopathic physician and CrossFit coach. “Not going out to dinner as often and drinking less wine are pretty good ways to save some money,” she says.
Fitness Obstacles
Obstacle: You think exercise is boring.
Solution: Find something you love.
If you consider your workout a chore, then you’re doing the wrong workout. Finding a fun activity is really crucial if you want to stick with it long enough to lose the weight and keep it off.
If running a treadmill is about as exciting to you as staring as a brick wall, don’t do it. Experiment with other types of workouts until you find a good fit: Try a country line dancing class, kick some butt in a mixed-martial arts workout, or check out a yoga class; your options are endless!
Obstacle: You don’t have time to exercise.
Solution: Find a workout that fits your schedule.
Lack of time is one of the biggest barriers, but it’s also about making workouts a priority, says Lakatos Shames. Scheduling a time in your day like you would an appointment can help you do that.
But if you’re really time-strapped, make sure you’re getting the most out of your sweat sessions. Choose a workout that’s designed to yield major results quickly. Beachbody’s Focus T25 and 22-Minute Hard Corps, for example, were created to get you an hour’s worth of results in less than half an hour.
Both programs also employ high-intensity interval training (HIIT), which helps you burn more calories every minute compared to steady-state exercise. You also keep burning more calories for days afterward: “By varying your intensity level — you get your heart rate up and down and up and down again— you increase post-exercise oxygen consumption, so you end up burning calories… long after you’ve finished your workout,” says Lucille.
Obstacle: You push yourself too hard, too often.
Solution: Make recovery a priority.
Walking your dog around the block may get your heart pumping a little, but it’s rarely enough to help you lose weight. Likewise, it’s easy to go overboard, and some people end up hitting fitness plateaus because they don’t ever give their bodies the time they need to recover from all of the intense exercise they’re doing.
“Allowing adequate time for recovery is extremely important,” says Lucille. “When I’m forced to rest a little and then go back to the gym, my speed and efficiency ends up being better.”
But before you get too excited, “recovery” doesn’t equal “lying on the couch all day with the remote.” There is a difference between rest and recovery days; on rest days, you’ll want to focus on getting sleep and replenishing your energy stores. On recovery days, you can still work out, but to a lesser degree. Try a gentle yoga routine from Beachbody’s 3 Week Yoga Retreat, or these full-body stretches.
“It’s important for your body to be challenged by doing something it’s not already used to,” says Lucille.
Obstacle: You rely on workouts to do it all.
Solution: Understand that exercise is just part of the puzzle.
While exercise can definitely help you lose weight, you can’t expect results if you focus on fitness while ignoring bad eating habits. Research shows that people who start a healthy diet AND a workout program at the same time are more likely to be doing both a year later.
“In my experience, I’d say weight loss is about 60 percent diet and 40 percent exercise,” says Lucille.
Obstacle: Your joints ache.
Solution: Go low-impact.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury or have a chronic issue, it’s hard to move when you’re in pain. Assuming you have your doctor’s OK, try stepping up your activity just a little bit, and focus on low-impact exercise, says Lakatos Shames.
“Any movement at all is better than sitting on the couch, and even spending 30 minutes on an exercise bike or swimming may help you lose weight if you were pretty sedentary before,” she explains.
Emotional Obstacles
Obstacle: You’re just not that motivated.
Solution: Set short- and long-term goals.
There’s a reason why it’s often easier to lose weight before a wedding or school reunion. But those types of motivators tend to be fleeting, and before you know it those 10 pounds (or more) are back on.
Setting a long-term, non-scale goal — say, to avoid health issues that a parent or grandparent has — will help, but you’ll probably need some extra targets to shoot for along the way.
“I once lost weight mainly by challenging myself to do a certain number of push-ups every day until I could do 100,” says Lucille. Some people find that getting competitive — perhaps by signing up for a series of challenging events, like a marathon, or 5K — keeps them invested in staying fit.
Obstacle: You’re embarrassed by your failed attempts.
Solution: Let it go, rethink, and reboot.
Lots of people try to lose weight and repeatedly fail, and they end up beating themselves up for it.
If that sounds like you, Lucille suggests nixing shame and blame by doing a 21-day “autopsy” — spend five minutes each night reviewing your habits and thinking about what went right (and what didn’t) that day, and try not to make any harsh judgments.
The goal is to eventually have an “a-ha” moment that enables you to stop feeling guilty and instead focus on moving forward.
Obstacle: Your willpower disappears in the face of temptation.
Solution: Plan your defense.
Sometimes it might seem like the entire world is out to sabotage your weight-loss efforts. Try to think ahead and predict where diet traps may arise so you can be ready with a healthy snack or distraction.
Pro tip: Don’t go hungry where temptation lurks (we’re looking at you, happy hour and office birthdays). Have a small nibble or a healthy shake beforehand and you’ll be more apt to resist unhealthy treats.
Obstacles are made to be overcome, so add these solutions to your weight-loss toolbox and watch those pounds drop off, slow and steady.
