Light on the sci-fi elements, more of a contemporary/coming-of-age story with a speculative twist

#this was pretty good #i think the author did nail a realistic dorky teenage voice without going overboard #i liked that the main character has a lot of queer friends #because he's part of his school's rainbow alliance #(for some reason there aren't many contemporary-set queer ya books with queer clubs idk why)#this does kind of read like the first book in a series but there doesn't seem to be a sequel which is kind of unsatisfying?#like the world-building only starts to get explained at the veryyyyy end #also there were some things that happened off-page that i would have liked to see happen on-page #like the party that the rainbow alliance is planning all book long #or the fact that his best friend is ace and felt alienated by someone else in the club #but then resolves that conflict at some point?#however i do feel like the teenage voice was pretty authentic #and i liked that it was set in canada as opposed to the us #the teleporting stuff is also kind of fun since he can go through doors but can't always control it #exit plans for teenage freaks #books #lulu speaks #lulu reads #lulu reads exit plans for teenage freaks #2023 reads
